SUMMARY:The Saturday School
DESCRIPTION:Sharpen your pencils\, pack your notebooks and lace your shoes – it’s back to school for adults! \nBook your ticket to London’s latest immersive experience and spend an afternoon back in a classroom\, with a difference. \nWhat can you expect? Your teachers will give bitesize lessons in everything from the history of the Apollo space missions and the biology of hangovers\, to the geography of the deep-sea and a PE lesson with a twist. Make sure you’re paying attention – there may be a quiz with prizes to end the day. \nOur teachers for this edition include TV doctor and author Dr Xand van Tulleken\, marine biologist Dr Diva Amon and trainee astronaut Dr Jackie Bell. \nBut we know that school was so much more than learning; you can expect to take over the playground during break-time with an outdoor adventure park; you can raid the tuck shop for all your favourite sweets or you can talk to the animals (we have live chickens!) before assembling for a class photo. If we get rained out\, spend wet play making new friends and catching up with your favourite childhood games. \nWe’ll end the day with story time and a cocktail. You can come alone or with partners or friends; we guarantee you’ll have a great afternoon in our classroom! \nTickets are £30 and include a special cocktail from the milk monitor and some homework for the bookworms… \nCome on\, school’s in!

SUMMARY:Me and My Friends at Grand Junction W2 - Afrobeat Concert
DESCRIPTION:The UK-based genre-defying quintet Me and My Friends brings their Afro-infused grooves to West London\, soaked in glorious folk harmony. \nThe band play soulful\, poignant music that draws influence from Afrobeat\, Jamaican roots\, jazz and Ghanaian highlife while subtly incorporating elegant folk songwriting. \nThe West African finger-picking guitar style of Nick Rasle is cradled by stunning vocal harmonies and the evocative combination of cello and clarinet\, all underpinned by a rhythm section with a deeply infectious groove. Alongside playing songs from their three critically acclaimed albums\, featured on BBC Radio 2\, 4\, and 6Music and receiving plaudits from Giles Peterson\, Me and My Friends will be performing their new EP\, Reworks – which they released back in June this year.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:ARTIST HOSTS ART WORKSHOP AND EXHIBITION IN LONDON IN SUPPORT OF CLEFT CHARITY\, SMILE TRAIN UK
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday 1st October\, Katie Manning\, artist\, and mother of three from Oxford\, will be hosting an art workshop and exhibition\, in support of Smile Train UK\, the international children’s cleft charity. \nThe workshop and exhibition\, featuring Katie’s collection of hand-drawn portraits of children with clefts\, will be taking place at The LightHouse & Gardens in Stratford\, London between 10am-12pm and 1pm-4pm. The workshop is donation led\, with all proceeds going to Smile Train UK. \nCoined a ‘morning of creativity’\, Katie’s workshop is an opportunity for the local community to celebrate smiles and facial differences through a variety of art activities in a social environment – encouraging conversation around and raising awareness of cleft. Guests will be encouraged to try their hand at portrait skills\, mark making and painting a smile on the hoarding in the Gardens. \nDuring the exhibition in the afternoon\, Katie will be showcasing her collection of cleft portraits – the result of a challenge she set herself in 2021. Katie is committed to hand-drawing 100 portraits of babies\, children and adults born with a cleft in the hope that it will help raise awareness and increase knowledge of what a cleft is\, in a creative and powerful way.
