SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: War Correspondent
DESCRIPTION:Heartfelt radio reports from a steadfast\, award-winning war correspondent provide a close view of the resilient daily lives of Ukrainian civilians who remain rooted in their homes amid constant explosions. \n\nWar Correspondent offers an intimate and gripping look at the human side of war through the lens of Martin Dorazín\, a seasoned Czech Radio journalist. Reporting from the front lines of Ukraine\, Martin’s heartfelt stories reveal the resilience\, pain\, and hope of civilians living amid devastation. \nAlongside Oleg\, a Ukrainian baker\, priest\, and humanitarian\, Martin navigates chaos\, offering aid and documenting lives disrupted by conflict. With no reliable internet\, electricity\, or information\, his work becomes a lifeline for voices that might otherwise go unheard. \nRather than focusing on military victories\, War Correspondent captures the human spirit in adversity—a story of strength\, compassion\, and unity. Through Martin’s empathetic perspective\, we witness the extraordinary courage of individuals who refuse to abandon their homes\, even as explosions echo around them. \nDavid Čálek\, Benjamin Tuček\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia\, Ukraine 2024\, 78 mins  \nBest Documentary Feature Award at the 2024 Warsaw Film Festival.\nhttps://www.valecnyzpravodaj.cz/en   \nABOUT MARTIN DORAZÍN\nMartin Dorazín is a distinguished war correspondent who sees his frontline work as a mission rather than just a profession. Reporting for Czech Radio since 1990\, with a six-year stint at Czech Television (1998–2004)\, he has earned a reputation for his fearless and objective coverage. In September 2014\, Dorazín and colleague Vít Pohanka were briefly detained by pro-Russian separatists in Donetsk\, Ukraine. Two years later\, in May 2016\, he received the Karel Havlíček Borovský Award for his exceptional reporting from war and crisis zones. In January 2022\, Dorazín departed from Warsaw for Ukraine\, arriving in Mariupol just before the conflict erupted. He documented the war’s onset and stayed through its most intense fighting for a year\, becoming one of the last journalists to leave the devastated city. In October 2022\, he became Czech Radio’s first permanent correspondent in Ukraine\, and in February 2023\, he was honored with the prestigious Ferdinand Peroutka Journalism Award \nAdmission: £5 \nAdmission Link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/czech-documentary-now-war-correspondent-tickets-1224830323469?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: Photophobia + Q&A with director Pavol Pekarčík
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, Czech Centre screens the UK Premiere of an original documentary telling the story of a Ukrainian boy Niki who has been living inside the Kharkiv metro station since the beginning of the war. \n\n\n\nOn a cold February morning\, 12-year-old Niki and his family arrive at the Kharkiv metro station to take shelter from the terrifying war raging outside. For Niki’s family\, daylight is synonymous with mortal danger\, and the boy is not allowed to leave the station premises\, living under the constant glow of their neon lights. While aimlessly wandering around the abandoned cars and full platforms\, Niki meets Vika (11)\, and a new world opens up to him. As their bond strengthens\, the children find the courage once again to feel the sun on their faces. \n\n\n\nIvan Ostrochovský\, Pavol Pekarčík\, Slovakia\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, 2023\, 71′\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nUK Premiere \n\n\n\nWinner of Europa Cinemas Label Award for the best European Film at the 2023 Venice Film FestivalThe Best Czech documentary award at the 27th Ji.Hlava International Documentary Film Festival\n\n\n\nWhen we arrived in Ukraine with humanitarian aid in the spring of 2022\, and settled into a life alongside the metro refugees\, we realized that the eyes of the world would be on the front line. That was why we decided to find something most closely approaching “ordinary life” and preserve it to the best of our abilities: to find a moment of genuine humanity at a time of devastating horror. We decided to juxtapose the timeless\, aimless life lived by Niki and his family with the chilling scenes playing out on ground level\, using the format of Super 8mm film footage. We’ve filmed observations of a war-ravaged country that might seem as the distant ideas of a traumatized child – a fever dream from times long past – if only the audience did not know that this was the reality of Ukraine nowadays.” Ivan Ostrochovský\, Pavol Pekarčík \n\n\n\nThe screening commemorates the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and justice. \n\n\n\nAdmission: £5 (+Eventbrite fee)
