SUMMARY:Alkanna Graeca: live at The Jazz Cafe - Jazz Concert 19/05/26
DESCRIPTION:Alkanna Graeca is a vocal trio weaving Balkan folk traditions with free improvisation and expansive soundscapes. Formed by Dunja Botic\, Alexandra Achillea\, and Irini Arabatzi\, they channel the heritage of their homelands into a ritualistic exploration of voice—songs carrying mountain echoes\, stripped bare\, reshaped\, and reborn\, blurring past and present. \nIrini’s voice\, shaped by her Greek roots\, jazz and South American influences\, has taken her to international stages. Dunja\, a Serbian-Greek singer and actress\, moves seamlessly between theatre and music\, drawing inspiration from Maqam and jazz. Alexandra’s background in classical\, folk\, and experimental music has carried her from opera houses to underground scenes. Together\, they create a sound that is earthy\, timeless\, and steeped in tradition—stripped bare\, transformed\, and reborn through improvisation. \n  \nMusic for London is one of the premier Jazz Band booking agencies in London for concerts\, parties and events

SUMMARY:Joseph Tawadros: live in London
DESCRIPTION:Cairo-born\, 8-time ARIA-award winner Joseph Tawadros is one of the world’s masters of his chosen instrument\, the oud – an Arabic lute-type fretless stringed instrument\, the ancestor of the Western lute and modern guitar. \nA virtuoso of diversity and sensitivity\, Joseph performs in concert halls worldwide and is known for his brilliant technique\, deep musicianship\, storytelling and joyous style of performance. For this rare solo performance in the UK\, Joseph will present an exciting programme of original music. His compositions draw inspiration from the Arabic modal system (maqam) and blend it seamlessly with elements of Western classical\, jazz\, world\, folk\, and even metal and bluegrass. \nRanging from thrilling\, furiously paced numbers to beautifully introspective and tranquil pieces\, the program is woven together by Joseph’s trademark lyricism and the striking contemporary musicality of his oud. \n  \nHire Oud Players in London

SUMMARY:Martin Hayes: live at KOKO
DESCRIPTION:Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music\, having founded the seminal Irish-American supergroup\, The Gloaming. The concept of Common Ground Ensemble\, his latest project\, emerged gradually in recent years while producing and curating concerts for various festivals\, often bringing together fresh collaborations and forming special ensembles for these events. \nMartin aimed to create an ensemble of musicians from different backgrounds who also have connections to Irish music – the common ground of their name. The line-up to compliment Martin on fiddle includes Cormac McCarthy (piano\, ‘Cottage Evolution’)\, Kate Ellis (cello\, Artistic Director of Crash Ensemble)\, Kyle Sanna (guitar\, a collaborator with Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile) and Brian Donnellan (bouzouki/harmonium/concertina\, and\, like Hayes\, an alumnus of The Tulla Céilí Band). \nCollectively\, they possess a wealth of talent spanning the worlds of traditional Irish music\, cutting-edge contemporary classical\, jazz improvisation and experimental music. In The Common Ground Ensembl\,e all of these genres are interwoven with the core elements of the tradition in a way that also gives each musician’s remarkable talents the space to shine. \nAfter sold-out shows at the Barbican\, EartH\, and Union Chapel\, Martin and the ensemble reunite for a one-off UK show to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in London. He adds\, “I want this to be the most fun I can have while I’m on stage.”

SUMMARY:Jasdeep Singh Degun: live at The Old Church
DESCRIPTION:Jasdeep Singh Degun stands out as one of the most innovative and awarded sitarists of his generation. Born in Leeds\, he masterfully blends Indian classical music with contemporary influences\, reinventing the horizons of the sitar. Trained under the guidance of Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE\, Jasdeep has mastered the gayaki ang technique\, a lyrical style that imitates the human voice\, giving his playing a unique expressive depth. \nIn recognition of his outstanding contributions\, Degun was awarded the Songlines Best Newcomer Award\, an Asian Achievers Award\, and made history as the first sitar player and British-Asian musician to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist award. \nSigned to Real World Records\, Jasdeep’s latest album Jogkauns was his first purely Indian classical album. Recorded with tabla player Harkiret Bahra\, Jogkauns offers a deeply immersive listening experience\, rooted in the Imdad-Khani gharana — the North Indian classical tradition in which Degun has trained. \nThe album is structured as a traditional Indian classical concert\, presenting the entirety of the music within a single raag — Raag Jogkauns\, a relatively modern evening raag that combines the moods of Raag Jog and Raag Malkauns. The result is a performance that unfolds organically\, balancing improvisation with careful attention to the arc of melody and rhythm. \nUsually seen on the sold-out stages of the Royal Festival Hall\, Barbican Centre\, and WOMAD Festival\, this performance is a rare opportunity to witness Jasdeep’s skill up close – in Stoke Newington’s intimate Old Church. \n  \nTraditional Musicians

SUMMARY:Gigspanner Big Band
DESCRIPTION:The Gigspanner Big Band are a unique force in British folk music… \n  \nHaving spent much of the past two years touring alongside best-selling author Raynor Winn (The Salt Path) with their massively successful prose and music collaboration SALTLINES\, the Gigspanner Big Band return to their six-piece format\, launching their brand new album\, Turnstone. \n  \nTheir high-energy\, virtuosic performances appeal equally to traditionalists and to those looking for something more experimental\, and they have garnered praise from publications as varied as fRoots\, The Telegraph and The Wire\, where they were described as ‘melodically folk-rooted yet open and innovative beyond the constraints of genre’ \n  \nBeginning life as a trio – with legendary Steeleye Span fiddle player Peter Knight being joined by percussionist Sacha Trochet and guitarist Roger Flack – the line-up has been expanded to form the Gigspanner Big Band\, with acclaimed multi-instrumental duo Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin – BBC Folk Awards ‘Best Duo’) and Bellowhead co-founder and melodeon player extraordinaire\, John Spiers\, joining the fray. \n  \nWhile Peter Knight\, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up\, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today\, John Spiers\, has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades. \n  \nCharacterised by riotous inventiveness\, technically gifted individual playing and subtle collaborative interaction\, this coming together of several of the biggest names on the folk-roots scene\, combines a deep knowledge of roots traditions with a ceaselessly boundary pushing approach. \n  \n“Spectacular” 5***** R2 Magazine \n“Utterly thrilling” Northern Soul \n“Totally blown away by the spellbinding Gigspanner Big Band. Lost for words…” Folking.com

SUMMARY:Tigran Hamasyan at Cadogan Hall (EFG London Jazz Festival)
DESCRIPTION:Performing at the beautiful Cadogan Hall for the EFG London Jazz Festival is Tigran Hamasyan\, one of the most remarkable jazz-meets-rock pianists and composers of his generation. He is known for blending improvisation with the rich traditional music of his native Armenia. \nHis much anticipated conceptual album\, ‘The Bird of a Thousand Voices’\, reimagines a traditional Armenian tale with a modern twist. Set for release on August 30th via Believe/Naïve Records\, this project breathes new life into the ancient firebird story\, which has been passed down through centuries. The mystical bird of a thousand voices is a beautiful metaphor of our times: a world in search of connection and harmony\, faced with ecological\, psychological and spiritual crises. \nLearn more about the transmedia project (music\, online game\, documentary) ‘The Bird of a Thousand Voices’ here: https://www.tigranhamasyan.com/home

SUMMARY:YueWuFu Rhythm of Chinese Music and Dance 10-Year Anniversary Performance
DESCRIPTION:Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance are proud to present\, Yue Wu Fu Rhythm of Music and Dance\, an eye-watering splendour of contemporary techniques and traditional Chinese music and dance in celebration of the department’s decennial anniversary. \n\n\n\nThe performance is set to be a mesmerising assault on the senses as it works to combine music\, dance and other art forms rooted in Chinese culture with rhythm and poetry as a guidance in order to portray the very essence of traditional culture. \n\n\n\nSince antiquity\, Chinese performance art has practiced the tradition of interweaving poetry\, dance and music together to create a profound sensorial\, aesthetic\, and reflective experience for the spectator. \n\n\n\nFor one night only\, acclaimed professional dancers\, musicians and vocalists from Goldsmiths Confucius Institute’s in-house professional performing arts troupe will impart an enthralling theatrical experience that will embody the beauty of Chinese classical works of art and theatrical practices – this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed.

SUMMARY:The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady in Song
DESCRIPTION:Acapella folk group Brooomdasher celebrate the 150th birthday of former Chelsea resident and Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady author Edith Holden with a poignant and entertaining folk musical at Keats Library Garden\, Keats Grove\, London on Saturday 3 July at 2 pm. \nThe show features classic folk songs as Broomdasher take the audience on a musical journey through Edith’s year\, captured in her extraordinary 1906 diary. Critics called it: “Traditional Folk meets Edwardian Eco-Warrior. Fantastic!”; “Inspired Harmonies”; “Superbly Engaging and Heartwarming” “Brilliantly Entertaining” https://youtu.be/_KNJonIVJ8g. \nThe book was a worldwide phenomenon when published in 1977\, Edith’s illustrations and words creating an exhilarating journey through the seasons. Millions of homes still have kitchenware\, soft furnishings\, porcelain\, diaries\, albums\, and notelets featuring pictures from the diary. \nBroomdasher met at Cecil Sharp House\, and all their recordings are in the British Museum’s National Sound Archive as “an outstanding example of grassroots traditional folk music today”. \nSadly\, Edith died following her passion for nature and the countryside. She drowned in a backwater of the Thames when she fell in a while\, reaching out to pluck chestnut buds overhanging the water\, aged 49 in 1920. \nhttp://www.broomdasher.com\nProceeds to the Hampstead School of Art and Keats Community Library. Tickets are £10 from the Library and online at WeGotTickets.\nFor Further Information Contact: John Palmer at 07881 738029 or broomdasher@btinternet.com

SUMMARY:Troxy Wurlitzer Showcase
DESCRIPTION:The cinema organ is a marvel…of fantasy\, sound\, colour and awe-inspiring machinery. Wind rushes through nearly two thousand pipes… drums beat…cymbals crash…bells ring. The sound can become almost anything – a 110 piece orchestra\, an 80 piece brass band\, a jazz trio\, a single pianist or a humble choir – all under the control of one master showman who is at once artist and magician. And magical is just the way to describe an evening at the art deco Troxy – a momentary step back into the age when movie theatres were palaces with grand decor. Once you take your seat\, there is a pause…and when the music begins\, the room and it‘s walls come alive. The music surrounds you – it rolls out through the hall like an incredible wave\, tickles your senses and knocks your socks off! We invite you to join us to hear the worlds finest organists at the Mighty Wurlitzer and experience TROXY! \nSimon Gledhill – ‘Born to be a cinema organist’\, he is one of the world’s finest players with an international following. Despite his full time job in City Finance\, Simon is also the the Cinema Organ Society’s chairman.

SUMMARY:Tudor Sights & Sounds. FREE event at Bow church on 14 Sept 2019
DESCRIPTION:Courtier\, or commoner\, whoever you were in Tudor London daily life was an assault on the senses. Courtesy of ‘A Merrie Noyse’ http://www.merrienoyse.com/ and some of our very own singers we’ll bring some of the nicer experiences to life for you. \nPop into the church between 1pm and 5pm to hear music of the period – and have a chance to join in. There’ll be other fun activities too\, all of which we hope will give a glimpse of the lives of our predecessors back when Bow was a quiet hamlet by the bridge over the River Lea (long before it was the setting for Adèle’s heartbreak). Meet some minstrels\, quiz them about the music\, their instruments\, what they’re wearing – and why – and enjoy a beverage while you’re here.
