SUMMARY:Tending
DESCRIPTION:There are 400\,000 nurses in the NHS today. This is their story. \nTending is an award-winning play that shines a light on the day-to-day lives of NHS nurses. SUMMARY:The Launching of the Mary: A Script-in-Hand Exploration
DESCRIPTION:THE LAUNCHING OF THE MARY: A Script-in-Hand Exploration\n  \n“The launching of a ship? This modern age\nhath seldom seen such action on a stage.”\n \nAlmost 400 years since it was written at sea\, come step into the riverside world of Walter Mountfort’s The Launching of the Mary. \n  \nDuring his ‘return from East India in 1632\, Walter Mountfort spent his idle hours writing a play. Set in a London shipyard\, complete with sprawling subplots and a range of colourful characters\, The Launching of the Mary immerses readers in a bustling riverside world. As shipyard artisans prepare to launch a ship\, while marine officers debate the ethics of overseas trade\, the mariner’s wife\, Dorotea Constance\, defends her home against a torrent of suitors. This workshop invites participants to explore this unknown Renaissance play through a lively but relaxed script-in-hand reading\, partly city comedy\, part domestic tragedy\, and part something else entirely. \nNo prior knowledge or performance experience is required to participate. A lightly abridged\, modern spelling edition of the play has been produced specially for this event\, and participants are invited to read\, listen\, or both. The session will conclude with a section for Q&A and the chance to reflect on the experience of encountering this curious play. \n  \nTuesday 6 May 2025\, 14:00-16:30 \nKeynes Library\, 43 Gordon Square\, London\, WC1H 0PD \nhttps://www.bbk.ac.uk/events/event/49292/the-launching-of-the-mary-a-script-in-hand-exploration

SUMMARY:The Sound of Absence
DESCRIPTION:An experimental musical theatre exploring memory and loss\, where music and words intertwine in a transformative\, transcendental journey.\n\nThe Sound of Absence – a groundbreaking fusion of contemporary piano concert and theatre play – redefines musical theatre by merging music and drama into a seamless whole. Here\, music is not just an accompaniment but a central character\, shaping the performance’s structure while the script infuses it with meaning. An actress narrates the story\, transcending words through the evocative musical world crafted by the pianist. The show will be playing at the Omnibus Theatre on May 24. Blending live sound\, movement\, and immersive storytelling\, The Sound of Absence is an exploration of loss\, memory\, and the way music becomes our companion in grief.\n\nWhat if grief had a sound of its own – one that refuses to be ignored?\n\nFeel free to follow us on Instagram for the latest updates and exclusive content!

SUMMARY:The Legend - The Generact Trilogy Part 1
DESCRIPTION:“Nothing short of Spellbinding!” ★★★★★ \nAcclaimed experimental theatre company Box House Theatre announces the debut of The Generact Trilogy Part 1 – “The Legend”\, an unflinching exploration of performance \, surveillance\, and the psychological burden of performance. \nIn a dystopian world where humans are void of choice and occupations are assigned at birth. We observe a group of Synthents who have been bred for one sole purpose: to entertain. \nUnder The Generact Programme\, our Synthents are the vessel for the retelling of Legends and Tales\, imposed to perform under the unrelenting gaze of observers\, critics and opportunists. Our group journey’s through the miseries and rapture of life as an artist and how an audience fuel the unyielding compulsion for performance. As they navigate the ecstasy and misery of their imposed vocation\, the line between actor and character begins to blur. Who is watching\, and why? And what happens when the story refuses to end? \nPart 1 of The Generact Trilogy: “The Legend” (formerly Twisted Tales) is a “visually stunning” Platform Theatre piece created by Box House Theatre Company. A cast of six actors are confined within the parameters of a Platform with nothing but the physical arsenal of body and voice to bring four legends which all end with a twist to life. \nStripped-down\, high-impact theatre seen on stages all over the globe — this is dystopia reimagined that echoes the dark brilliance for fans of 1984\, The Hunger Games\, and Black Mirror.

SUMMARY:Star-Cross*d
DESCRIPTION:What if\, while the world wept for Romeo and Juliet\, another story slipped by unseen? \nStar-Cross*d puts a fresh\, comedic spin on Shakespeare’s belovèd tale\, shifting the focus to ‘the room next door’\, where the real drama exists. With scheming relatives\, forbidden passions\, and everyone trying desperately to rewrite their stars. \nTold in Elizabethan-style language\, this new production blends original music\, shadow theatre\, and dynamic ensemble work. A fresh collaboration between an emerging writer and director\, exploring themes of fate\, privilege\, and free will – asking how much control one has over their actions when shaped by their environment.

Living at home with her traditional Eritrean mother Tsehaynesh\, Bethlehem doesn’t know what privacy is! Being a stoic woman of culture and strict upbringing\, Tsehaynesh struggles to understand Bethlehem’s career in the arts and what it takes to be an actress\, poet and writer. “When are you going to get a paid job?”\, “This agency is no good for you!” and “Did you hear anything?” is what Bethlehem is constantly pressed with\, and to make matters worse\, something drastic happens to Bethlehem which means she’ll have to work harder than ever to achieve her dreams. Will the endless open mic nights\, self-tapes and play drafts be worth it? \nADEY ኣደይ is a heartfelt semi-autobiographical play which combines spoken word\, music\, movement and dance to tell Bethlehem and Tsehaynesh’s stories\, transporting us to the colourful and vibrant streets of West Green Road as well as the palm tree covered pavements of Asmara\, Eritrea. \nJoin us on August 11th and August 12th for relatable stories of motherhood\, tasty Eritrean food and snacks\, plenty of tears and laughter\, learning how to shim shim and some award winning poetry.\n(Bethlehem is the National Heroica Poetry Prize Winner of 2024)
