Travelling from the Arctic to hear throat-singing\, to Indigenous Caribbean jazz to learn the real history of Carnival\, to Melanesia Wantok dances of Resistance. From Bolivia – Saints\, Cholas and Morenos\, to Peruvian Andes for Winaypacha. Meet more diversity than you could ever imagine\, with documentaries to inspire\, magical stop-motion; avant-garde digital arts and interactive digital bodypainting from Indigenous Brazil. DESCRIPTION:We Gather – Craft Exhibition featuring five female makers of Black and Asian Heritage\nNew Crafts Council exhibition We Gather features five female makers of Black and Asian heritage whose work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value\, 17 November 2021 – 5 February 2022 \nWe Gather exhibition opens at the Crafts Council Gallery on 17 November and features five female Black and Asian heritage artists. Whilst their chosen materials and disciplines vary\, their work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value. The makers are Shaheen Ahmed\, Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings\, Francisca Onumah and Onome Otite. \nThe title We Gather refers to the gathering of ideas\, skills and emotions embedded within these five craft practices and the meeting of perspectives that have been underrepresented in the industry. It is also a symbol of gratitude towards the communities who gathered their courage\, bodies\, and voices to support justice for Black lives\, which instigated deeper conversations between the UK’s Black makers and the Crafts Council. \n“This exhibition has offered us a unique opportunity to curate in honour of women who share similar experiences and frames of reference to our own\, but also within a mainstream cultural organisation that we haven’t traditionally seen ourselves reflected in. We are excited to bring together their collection of works\, which offer audiences fresh visibility to crafts that has emotional depth\, space and social resonance.” Curators of We Gather\, Rosie Ross & Griffi. \nThe We Gather exhibition came out of Craft Expertise\, the AHRC-funded UKRI/RCUK Innovation Fellowship led by Dr Karen Patel of Birmingham City University\, collaborating with Crafts Council. The research aimed to raise awareness of inequalities in the current craft economy in the UK and highlight the various challenges women of colour face in the sector. \nCommissioned by Dr Karen Patel as part of her research\, each artist in the exhibition will present new and existing work. \nBirmingham-based artist Shaheen Ahmed uses maps to reflect narratives of statelessness and disparagement. Her work is layered with a multitude of craft processes and motifs\, including calligraphy and Islamic geometry. She wore a blindfold while making them connect with the emotions and experiences of oppressed societies. \nEast Sussex-based artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, known for her provocative textile works that challenge preconceptions of knitting and crochet\, has created a knitted magazine cover – ‘We Mek Magazine’- full of symbolism with a central figure inspired by political activist Angela Davis and with her watch set to 9.25\, the time that George Floyd lost his life to police brutality. \nBritish-Sudanese textile artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings will present a new light installation. The work incorporates dyeing\, screen-printing\, and Devoré techniques to explore themes of identity\, communication\, heritage\, and womanhood. The artist is influenced by her Sudanese heritage\, which is reflected in her use of Arabic geometry\, colour\, and form. \nGhanaian-born silversmith Francisca Onumah has created three emotive and figurative vessels in her new work ‘In our sKin’ (2021) that reflect family\, relationships and historical images of Ghanaian people in everyday life. Their abstracted patterns are deconstructed from traditional Ghanaian motifs\, fabrics\, and crafted objects. Instead\, marks and textures are repeatedly hammered into sheet metal to mirror and resemble the patterns found in textiles and fabrics. \nLondon-based artist Onome Otite has created a new textile work inspired by the support network between women\, the group of figures in her piece are based on close friends of hers that have inspired her. She has also intentionally chosen five figures to mirror the relevance of the five women taking part in the We Gather exhibition. She has hand-stitched loose-folded fabrics across her hand-drawn statistics\, which each of her subjects has donated. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a gathering space. Material from the commissioning artists will be displayed alongside other pioneering female makers whose work celebrates craft within everyday contexts. Among these will be works by artists Jasleen Kaur and Magdalene Odundo DBE from the Crafts Council Collection. We Gather is a site for learning and reflection\, with books\, reports and images encouraging visitors to discuss visibility\, cultural traditions\, and the value of women’s contribution to craft within everyday contexts. \nThe exhibition also features a selection of objects and portraits of female artisans from The Black Artisans\, a photographic project by Jo Sealy that celebrates Black artisans in traditional sectors of UK heritage crafts and gives visibility to doing practices derived from African and Caribbean cultural heritage\, including steel pan making and calabash art. \nThe exhibition graphic design is by Rose Nordin\, co-founder of OOMK (One of My Kind).

DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. DESCRIPTION:A practical\, hands-on workshop with textile artist and lecturer Nicole Line. \nLearn to hand paint and mark-make onto paper using a variety of colourful liquid dyes before transferring your designs onto recycled synthetic fabric using the heat press. This process is known as heat-transfer printing or ‘sublimation printing’. SUMMARY:TRACES
DESCRIPTION:TRACES is the joint title for two solo exhibitions running concurrently at One Paved Court in September. Printmaker Loraine Monk presents a body of work tracing the history of social dissent and protest on the ground floor\, while Rachel Pearcey kicks over the traces with her textile works in the upper gallery. \nLoraine Monk creates images using both relief and etching processes\, using the act of cutting to make tactile\, the visceral anger of inequality and political disengagement. Her family were working-class Londoners; inspired by local and community history\, her background has influenced her politics\, academic research and artistic practice.  She has exhibited in a number of independent galleries\, museums and group shows\, including the International Original Print Exhibition\, the Society of Women Artists\, New English Art Club\, Printmakers Council and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. \nRachel Pearcey loves textiles and stitching and drawing and making things.  She stitches drawings and words onto second-hand\, vintage or antique linen\, cotton or flax. She creates unbreakable cups and bowls\, teapots and jugs with felt\, wool and linen. Softened with years of wear\, faded\, repaired and darned each piece she uses bears traces of a previous\, often now redundant\, life.
