SUMMARY:The Burden of Hate: Bridging the divide in unforgiving times
DESCRIPTION:The Forgiveness Project’s eighth Annual Lecture! \nOn the evening of Thursday\, 13 September at the beautiful Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill\, we will be holding our eighth Annual Lecture. \nWe are delighted to welcome the American author\, commentator and community organiser Sally Kohn to the UK. As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN\, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences and learning how to talk respectfully with people whose views she disagrees with passionately. \nSally Kohn will be exploring the epidemic of hate all around us – from internet trolls to school bullies\, from racist chants to homophobia – and what we can do to repair our humanity. \nSally’s recent book\, The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity\, investigates the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She talked with people from all around the world\, including many of The Forgiveness Project’s storytellers – Bassam Aramin\, Pardeep Kaleka\, Tony McAleer and Arno Michaelis – drawing surprising lessons from people who left hate behind. \nIn confronting her own shameful moments\, whether as a child bullying a classmate\, or today when she harbours deep partisan resentment\, Sally discovered\, ‘The opposite of hate is the beautiful and powerful reality of how we are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings. The opposite of hate is connection.’ \nTickets: £22 (£12 concessions – low income)\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 35 Powis Square\, W11 2AY\nTransport: Nearest underground stations: Notting Hill Gate or Westbourne Park \nThe Forgiveness Project is an award-winning charity working with real stories to explore how forgiveness\, empathy and sharing stories can be used to break cycles of harm\, transform relationships and restore hope.

DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Miranda Kaufmann for a voyage into Black British History aboard The Golden Hinde. \nDr. Miranda Kaufmann\, the author of Black Tudors: The Untold Story\, will first whisk you away to Panama\, where an African man named Diego first met Francis Drake in 1572. \nThen you will follow in Diego’s footsteps as he pursues adventure in the Caribbean and then\, four years later\, around the world. But Diego was not the only African to sail with Drake. You will hear of at least six other African men who joined the Golden Hinde as she sailed up the western coast of South America. \nThe voyage into Black British History ends when the Golden Hinde arrives at Crab Island\, Indonesia\, where a heavily pregnant African woman named Maria\, was scandalously abandoned. \nDr. Miranda’s Kaufmann’s book will be available for purchase after the talk\, please bring cash as card payments will not be possible. \nDoors open at 19:00\, talk is from 19:30 – 20:30 and there will be time for Q&A. \nVisit http://www.mirandakaufmann.com for more information on her work.

SUMMARY:How to Profile a Serial Killer
DESCRIPTION:The twisted mind and motives of serial killers like Jack the Ripper is of enduring fascination to the general public as well as professional psychologists. Often they are driven by an escalating need to play out sadistic sexual fantasies\, in which the suffering of their victim is a central component. \nDespite fictional investigators like Cracker\, who bring uncanny intuition and artful interrogation to extract confessions\, the work of modern profilers uses cold science and previous research findings about types of killers and crime scenes to focus the search for the perpetrator. It is a logical approach\, with nothing mystic or “psychic” about it. \nDr. Glenn Wilson has experience in forensic psychology spanning many years and has been involved in many high profile cases\, such as helping to convict the Brighton Strangler and Fred West’s wife Rosemary\, and the acquittal of Colin Stagg (who was wrongly charged for the Wimbledon Common murder). \nDr. Wilson has also been a scientific advisor and expert commentator for several TV series\, such as Vic Reeves Investigates\, Jack the Ripper (ITV)\, Inside the Mind of a Serial Killer (Investigation Discovery) and Stalkers Who Kill (CBS Reality). \nDr Glenn Wilson is one of Britain’s best-known psychologists\, specialising in personality and sexual behaviour.\nFunzing Talks pull together an impressive array of leading entrepreneurs\, intellectuals\, bright thinkers and incredible individuals to inspire your evenings and expand your mind. \nDelve into a totally new subject and challenge your perspectives with like-minded\, equally curious people. It’s time to try something different – you never know where it may take you. \nExperience includes:\n\nFascinating lecture\nHigh profile speaker\nTrendy venue\nUnique after-work event\n\nTickets: Click Here if you Dare

SUMMARY:Book launch talk: 'Why can't you afford a home?' by Josh Ryan-Collins
DESCRIPTION:Join Josh Ryan-Collins\, Head of Research at UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)\, as he gives a talk on the launch of his latest book ‘Why can’t you afford a home?’. The event will be chaired by Guardian columnist and housing expert Dawn Foster. \nThroughout the western world\, a whole generation is being priced out of the housing market. While wages and incomes continue to stagnate for the majority\, house prices and rents remain staggeringly high. \nRyan-Collins argues that to understand this crisis\, we must examine a crucial paradox at the heart of modern capitalism. For anyone who wants to understand the housing affordability crisis and what we can do about it\, this talk is not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Lost Narratives: A Hidden World of Urbex Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Atlas Obscura for a talk on urban exploration — Urbex — and what it takes to photograph abandoned buildings all over the world. \nUrban Exploration has always been a popular pastime to rule breakers and renegades\, but with the advent of social media\, especially Instagram\, there has been a new rise in its visibility. Once only available to those who were willing to risk the dangers of entering decaying structures\, modern technology has made it possible for photographers to share what’s inside ruins around the world with the world. Viewing this practice through the eyes of an expert will help us uncover more about the compulsion to go off the beaten track and share these discoveries. \nThe talk will be given by urban explorerer and photographer Claire Alaxandra Powell\, and she’ll discuss how keeping secrets within the urbex community helps preserve these structures for the future\, and the history behind the places she’s photographed all over Europe. Claire herself has been hunting for ruins for the past decade in England\, Germany\, Italy\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, the United States\, and more\, and will bring this wealth of experience and knowledge to share. \nOur event will be hosted in the Asylum Chapel\, an 1824 chapel whose interior was ruined by an incendiary device during World War II. The interior\, almost entirely destroyed from the explosion\, remains in much the same state today.

SUMMARY:Design For Wildlife - ‘How Many Elephants’ Annual Talk Event
DESCRIPTION:Description\n‘Design For Wildlife’\nWe are delighted to bring you an evening of adventure from the front line of conservation in Africa. \nHeadline Speakers:\nHolly Budge\nAdventurer | Conservationist | Founder of How Many Elephants\nHolly will be sharing her adventurous tales of fundraising from the summit of Everest to immersing herself with the Black Mambas\, an all female front line anti-poaching team in South Africa. Holly founded ‘How Many Elephants’\, a design-led campaign\, to inspire and educate a global audience about the devastating impact of the elephant ivory trade. To date\, she has raised over £300k for charity. More at http://www.hollybudge.com \nDr. Niall McCann\nExplorer | Conservationist | Biologist\nNiall is the Director of Conservation for National Park Rescue\, a direct-action conservation organisation that focuses on preventing the slaughter of elephants\, rhinos and lions in sub-Saharan Africa. Niall’s adventures have been covered in the media for many years. He presented the award-winning documentary Lost in the Amazon\, and two seasons of the multi award-winning Biggest and Baddest. More at http://www.niallmccann.com \nThere will be a short talk by Gavin Bowyer\, a trauma & orthopaedic surgeon with a passion for photography\, which has taken him around the globe photographing snails and irrigation schemes in Africa\, to recording war wounds on the Afghan border and in Gaza. He has sought ways to support charities through his photography to raise awareness of welfare and conservation issues. We are delighted that Gavin is supporting How Many Elephants on the night through a silent auction.\nThis exciting event will be held at the prestigious Royal Geographical Society. The talks will be followed by an audience Q&A. All proceeds from the evening will go to the How Many Elephants Campaign which supports National Park Rescue and Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust in Zimbabwe\, and the Black Mambas in South Africa.\nFor our VIP ticket holders\, there will champagne and canapes in the iconic Map Room before the talks and champagne and mingling with the speakers afterwards. Don’t delay as these tickets are limited. \n“Holly Budge is inspiring and determined to save the elephants being targeted by poachers.”\nBBC News \n“An innovative and fresh way of raising awareness of the scale of the poaching problem in Africa.”\nColin Bell\, Wilderness Safaris Co-founder \nHow Many Elephants \nOrganiser How Many Elephants\nOrganiser of ‘How Many Elephants’ Annual Talk Event \nFew people know that 96 African elephants are poached each day for their ivory. At this astonishing rate they will be extinct in the wild within a decade.\nHow Many Elephants founder\, Holly Budge\, turned this disheartening statistic into a powerful campaign using design as a tool to bridge the gap between scientific data and human connection. The ‘How Many Elephants’ exhibition showcases 35\,000 elephant silhouettes\, the current annual poaching rate in Africa\, in a striking exhibition which is heading for China this year. The exhibition has also gone digital\, launching on Instagram (@howmanyelephants) on January 1st 2019. Each day a square of 96 elephants is posted to depict the daily poaching rate. \nThe award-winning campaign purposely avoids using gruesome images of mutilated elephants to shock\, as Holly believes we’ve become desensitized to this approach. To actually see and connect with this data visually is highly impactful. How Many Elephants fundraises to support direct action initiatives in Africa. \nhttp://www.howmanyelephants.co
