SUMMARY:Designed to Belong: Modernism\, Industry and Community
DESCRIPTION:Belonging is not accidental – it is designed. This panel explores how architecture shapes belonging\, not just by providing shelter\, but by structuring everyday life. \n\nUsing Bata Village at East Tilbury as a starting point\, it examines how modernist ideals\, industrial ambition\, and community planning created a distinctive model of living. Historian Milan Balaban situates the settlement within the global story of Bata cities\, while architectural historian Gillian Darley reflects on its significance for British modernism. Mick Pinion from the Bata Heritage Centre brings a local and heritage perspective on East Tilbury’s development and legacy\, and architect Ondřej Chybík discusses contemporary lessons for urban planning. Chaired by John Tusa\, the conversation links historical experiments to today’s questions of development\, identity and place-making. \nSPEAKERS:\nSir John Tusa is a British arts administrator\, author\, journalist and former presenter of the BBC’s Newsnight. Born in Czechoslovakia\, he moved to East Tilbury in 1939\, where his father was Managing Director of the British Bata Shoe Company factory. He is Co-Chairman of the European Union Youth Orchestra and was previously Managing Director of the BBC World Service and Director of the Barbican Arts Centre. He is the author of On Board\, Making a Noise and On Creativity. \nGillian Darley OBE is a widely published writer and historian who was President of the Twentieth Century Society from 2014 until 2021. She first visited East Tilbury\, in search of the Bata industrial village\, in the early 1970s\, when researching and photographing her first book\, Villages of Vision (1975\, reissued 2007). Ever since she has returned at regular Intervals. The village featured in her most recent book\, Excellent Essex (2019). In 2024\, Gillian achieved a longed-for aim\, a visit to Zlin. \nMilan Balaban is a historian specialising in business\, economic\, and industrial history\, with a focus on the global Bata Company network. He is a researcher at the Information Centre Bata\, Tomas Bata University in Zlín\, and a lecturer at Palacký University in Olomouc. SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Zakia Sewell – Finding Albion – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday 5th June at 7:00 pm at ICMP’s Queen’s Park venue for a special in‑conversation event with award‑winning writer\, DJ and broadcaster Zakia Sewell\, as she discusses her brand‑new book: \nFINDING ALBION – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain \nIn this intimate interview\, Zakia will discuss her quest for ‘another Britain’. How she traversed the length and breadth of our island from Somerset to Scotland\, seeking out a different story – one that lies beyond divisive national myths and symbols. \nIn Finding Albion\, Zakia uncovers an alternative spirit of Britain that is vividly alive today. It is found in otherworldly folk songs\, ancient legends\, Celtic seasonal rites and mystic stone circles that punctuate our landscape. Her journey begins as the sun rises on the spring equinox over Glastonbury Tor\, where she meets neopagans reclaiming traditions from our pre-Christian past. At summer’s peak at Notting Hill Carnival\, she hears cultural echoes that passed along the slave trade routes from the Caribbean. On All Hallows’ Eve\, she encounters the ghosts of Empire that are still haunting the nation\, and in the depths of a Cornish winter\, she asks if today’s new folk revival could unite our increasingly divided country? \nFinding Albion brings a hopeful story of Britain out from the shadows\, giving us a deeper sense of who we are and heralding the promise of a brighter future. \nTickets available here – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-zakia-sewell-finding-albion-tickets-1988473699363?aff=oddtdtcreator \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nZakia Sewell is a writer\, DJ and broadcaster based in London. She hosts Dream Time on BBC Radio 6 Music and used to host the flagship breakfast show on NTS Radio. For the past eight years\, she has been producing and presenting radio documentaries and podcasts for platforms such as BBC Radio 3 and 4\, Tate and Camden Arts Centre. SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Paul Sexton with Rock Goes to College (Special performance from Freya Everest)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening with Paul Sexton\, acclaimed music journalist\, author and broadcaster\, as he explores his latest book Rock Goes to College — the definitive\, untold story of the UK university gig circuit that launched a generation of legendary artists. With an opening performance by talented singer-songwriter Freya Everest\, this one is not to be missed!  \nIn Rock Goes to College\, Sexton traces the rise of Britain’s student gig circuit during the late 1960s and 1970s. This grassroots touring network became a proving ground for emerging artists during the explosion of rock music and the album era. As new universities and polytechnics opened across the UK\, bands criss-crossed the country in battered vans\, playing student unions\, honing their sound and chasing the dream of a record deal. \nDrawing on extensive original interviews and his unrivalled access to artists and industry figures\, Sexton tells remarkable early-career stories of acts including Pink Floyd\, Led Zeppelin\, The Who\, Queen\, Elton John\, Fleetwood Mac\, Genesis\, Nick Drake\, AC/DC and Dire Straits — as well as the student promoters and social secretaries who booked them\, many of whom would go on to shape the modern music industry themselves. The book also reveals how Paul McCartney and Wings returned to this circuit post-Beatles to road-test a new band from the ground up. \nPart music history\, part social history\, Rock Goes to College captures a vital moment when higher education\, youth culture and live music collided — shaping careers\, communities and the future of British rock. \nWhat to expect\n\nAn in-depth conversation with Paul Sexton on the stories and research behind Rock Goes to College\nInsight into the UK’s university gig circuit and its role in developing iconic artists\nDiscussion on music journalism\, biography and documenting cultural history\nAudience Q&A\nA live and intimate acoustic performance from Freya Everest\nBook signing opportunity — bring your copy or purchase one on the night\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for an entertaining\, insightful and nostalgia-rich evening uncovering one of the most influential — and least documented — chapters in British music history. \nAbout The Long Play Sessions\nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, a curated series hosted by ICMP Music School\, celebrating influential writers whose work has shaped how we understand music\, culture and creative history. Each session brings landmark books to life through live conversation\, historical context and deep industry insight.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Dan Jennings with Paul Weller Dancing Through the Fire
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate and expansive evening with award‑winning broadcaster and journalist Dan Jennings\, as he discusses DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE: The Authorised Oral History of Paul Weller\, the first fully authorised and definitive oral account of one of Britain’s most influential and enduring musical figures. \nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, ICMP’s curated series celebrating transformative writers\, artists and cultural voices who shape how we understand music\, identity and creative expression. Each session opens a window into the stories behind the art — blending conversation\, cultural history and lived experience. \nHosting the evening will be acclaimed author Daniel Rachel and joining as a guest will be Go! Discs founder Andy Macdonald. \nIn DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE\, Jennings traces the extraordinary creative life of Paul Weller\, from the explosive urgency of The Jam\, through the ambitious sophistication of The Style Council\, to a prolific and uncompromising solo career spanning more than three decades. Built from over 200 hours of interviews with more than 250 contributors\, including Weller himself; the book offers an unprecedented\, collective portrait of a musician whose influence has defined generations. \nDrawing on unique access to Weller’s inner circle of family\, friends\, bandmates\, producers and collaborators\, Jennings reveals the drive\, discipline and restless creativity behind a career that continually resisted nostalgia and commercial complacency. The result is candid\, generous and richly revealing — capturing not just the myth\, but the man at the centre of one of British music’s most remarkable artistic journeys. \nFar more than a standard biography\, DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE explores the realities of longevity\, reinvention and creative survival. It reflects on class\, culture\, fandom and the personal cost of sustaining artistic integrity in the public eye\, while charting how Weller became one of the very few artists to achieve Number One albums across five consecutive decades. \nPaul Weller’s story — creative\, uncompromising and continually evolving\, speaks to anyone who cares about music as a cultural force. It asks what it takes to remain vital\, curious and true to yourself when the world expects you to stand still. \nAlready hailed by critics as a landmark work of music journalism\, DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE is being recognised as the definitive account of one of Britain’s greatest artists. \nTickets available here and currently on a limited 2-4-1 offer – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-dan-jennings-paul-weller-dancing-through-the-fire-tickets-1987599404323?aff=oddtdtcreator \nWhat to Expect\n\nA talk from Dan Jennings exploring the making of DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE\, the interview process\, and the challenge of capturing a living legend through many voices\nIn‑depth discussion of creativity\, longevity\, reinvention and artistic integrity across five decades of British music\nBehind‑the‑scenes insight into Jennings’ unprecedented access to Paul Weller and his closest collaborators\nReflections on class\, fandom\, cultural legacy and why Weller’s music continues to resonate across generations\nAudience Q&A\, offering the chance to engage directly with Jennings about his research\, the writing process and Paul Weller’s cultural impact\nBook signing — bring your copy or purchase one on the night\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a thoughtful\, energising and unforgettable evening celebrating one of modern music’s most vital and uncompromising creative figures. \n\n\n\nLocation\nThe Venue\, ICMP (Queens Park Campus)\, NW6 6PA

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Scott Rowley with Stay Alive: The Life and Death of Stuart Adamson
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a powerful and deeply human evening with author and music journalist Scott Rowley as he discusses STAY ALIVE: The Life and Death of Stuart Adamson — the first fully co‑operative and definitive account of the life\, legacy and tragic death of one of Scotland’s most influential and enigmatic musicians. \nThis event is part of The Long Play Sessions\, ICMP’s curated series spotlighting transformative writers\, artists and cultural voices who shape the way we understand music\, identity and creative expression. Each session opens a window into the stories behind the art — blending conversation\, cultural history and lived experience. \nIn STAY ALIVE\, Rowley traces the remarkable rise and haunting decline of Stuart Adamson\, founder of both The Skids and Big Country. Drawing on unprecedented access to Adamson’s family\, bandmates\, private writings and never‑before‑seen material\, Rowley paints a vivid portrait of a man whose talent\, turmoil and working‑class pride helped define a generation of post‑punk and alternative rock. \nFrom the chaotic energy of late‑70s Scotland\, to global fame with Big Country\, to the battles with addiction\, trauma and depression that shadowed his later years\, Rowley’s narrative is unflinching\, tender\, and profoundly revealing. Far more than a music biography\, STAY ALIVE explores the weight of expectation\, the wounds we carry from childhood\, and the quiet struggles that fame can magnify rather than soothe. \nAdamson’s story — tragic\, inspiring and heartbreakingly human — resonates far beyond his era. It asks what it means to be an artist\, a father\, a survivor… and what happens when the world sees only the legend\, not the man. \nWith praise from critics and musicians alike\, this long‑overdue book is already being hailed as a definitive work on one of Scotland’s most compelling creative figures. \nTickets available here and currently on a limited 2-4-1 offer – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-scott-rowley-with-tony-butler-stay-alive-tickets-1987598655082?aff=oddtdtcreator \nPurchase the book here:\nhttps://bit.ly/stayalivescottrowley \nWhat to Expect\n\nA talk from Scott Rowley exploring the making of STAY ALIVE\, the revelations uncovered\, and the emotional weight of telling Adamson’s story\nIn‑depth discussion of creativity\, trauma\, addiction\, fame\, and the pressures placed on artists in the post‑punk and alternative rock scenes\nBehind‑the‑scenes insight into Rowley’s research\, interviews and unprecedented access to Adamson’s family and archives\nReflections on legacy\, working‑class identity and how one man’s music resonated across generations\nAudience Q&A\, offering the chance to engage directly with Rowley about Adamson’s life\, the writing process and the cultural impact of The Skids and Big Country\nBook signing — bring your copy or purchase one at the event\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a moving\, honest and unforgettable evening centred on one of Scotland’s most important — and most misunderstood — musical icons. \n\n\n\nLocation\nThe Venue\, ICMP (Queens Park Campus)\, NW6 6PA

Each session opens a window into the stories behind the art – blending conversation\, cultural insight and lived experience. \nIn Even the Good Girls Will Cry\, Auf der Maur offers a clear‑eyed\, fiercely honest account of her unexpected ascent through one of the most iconic\, turbulent periods in modern rock history. From her beginnings in Montreal’s bohemian music scene\, to joining Hole at a time of grief and reinvention\, to performing alongside figures such as Courtney Love\, Billy Corgan\, Dave Grohl\, Rufus Wainwright and Michael Stipe\, her memoir captures the chaos\, beauty and brutality of the last analogue decade. \nFar from nostalgia\, Auf der Maur explores identity\, ambition\, survival and self‑expression in an era before social media – when artists crafted their worlds long before they crafted their online personas. Her reflections offer rare female perspectives from within a landscape that was often mythologised but rarely shown through a woman’s eyes. \nWith praise from Shirley Manson\, Walton Goggins\, Natasha Lyonne and Martha Wainwright\, the memoir is a powerful\, poetic and unflinchingly human portrait of a generation that defined modern alternative culture. \nWhat to Expect\n\nA talk from Melissa Auf der Maur on the stories\, themes and revelations behind Even the Good Girls Will Cry\nDeep‑dive discussion on creativity\, identity and navigating fame within 1990s alternative rock\nInsights into authorship\, memory and the process of capturing a cultural moment on the page\nAudience Q&A\, offering a chance to engage directly with Melissa about her life\, art and writing\nBook signing opportunity — bring your copy or purchase one at the event\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a thoughtful\, inspiring and powerfully personal evening with one of alternative rock’s most distinctive and fearless voices. \nLocation\nThe Venue\, ICMP (Queens Park Campus)\, NW6 6PA

SUMMARY:Summits\, Science and Survival
DESCRIPTION:The mountains are changing around us. Glacier loss and increasing instability are making the work of exploratory mountaineers ever more hazardous and difficult\, but the challenges are no less acute for those living in the valleys beneath these crumbling giants. \nThis year’s Mount Everest Foundation lecture asks what the future holds for mountaineers and mountain communities\, drawing on the experiences of young alpinists and pioneering mountain scientists. \nGeorge Ponsonby and James Price’s ascent of Aikache Chhok (6673m) in Pakistan was hailed as one of the most impressive mountaineering achievements of 2025\, a daring climb that pushed the pair to the limit over nine days on the mountain. As two climbers at the very start of their careers\, they exemplify how a new generation is choosing to approach high altitude climbing. \nJoining them on stage will be Professor Rachel Carr and Sonam Rinzin who will present their groundbreaking research on glacial lake outburst floods and the growing risks they pose to mountain communities. Drawing on their work in Bhutan\, the pair will explain how remote villages might adapt to this growing threat. \nJoin us for an evening of inspiration and insight\, pulled direct from the frontlines of mountain exploration.

SUMMARY:Wolves\, Folklore\, and Family: Reading and Discussion with Zuzana Rihova
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed Czech writer and scholar Zuzana Říhová joins Dr Kathryn Murphy (University of Oxford) for an informal evening of readings and discussion of her novel Playing Wolf\, a contemporary tale set in the Czech countryside. \nA couple move from Prague with their young son to a remote village in the hope of repairing their failing marriage. As they attempt to settle in\, they encounter a closed community shaped by unspoken rules\, strange coincidences\, and fragments of local folklore. Using the familiar tale of Little Red Riding Hood\, subtly woven into the narrative\, the story illuminates themes of vulnerability\, trust\, and hidden menace. \nBlending psychological insight with folkloric resonance\, Playing Wolf explores how myths and inherited stories continue to influence behaviour and relationships in the present day. The conversation will reflect on the role of folklore and fairy-tale motifs in the novel\, and on how quiet tensions within families and communities can slowly transform lives. \nZuzana Říhová studied Czech language and literature and comparative literature at Charles University in Prague. She has published a collection of poetry\, Pustím si tě do domu (I’ll Let You in My House)\, and a novella\, Evička (Little Eve). \nAlex Zucker’s translations include novels by Magdaléna Platzová\, Jáchym Topol\, Bianca Bellová\, Petra Hůlová\, and Tomáš Zmeškal. He has also translated plays\, subtitles\, young adult and children’s books\, poems\, philosophy\, art history\, and an opera. \nKathryn Murphy is Fellow and Tutor in English Literature at Oriel College\, Oxford\, where she writes about and teaches seventeenth-century literature. Her book\, Robert Burton: A Vital Melancholy is forthcoming from Reaktion. She studied Czech literature at the University of Glasgow\, and reviews Czech fiction for the Times Literary Supplement. \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBook Here \nZuzana Říhová will also appear in Oxford the day before\, on Wednesday 4 March 2026\, for a special event at The Queen’s College exploring poetry in translation alongside a reading from Playing Wolf. The Oxford evening will include discussion\, a book signing and refreshments. Free entry. More info

SUMMARY:Václav Havel European Dialogues / Growth and Inequality in Central Europe: Between Havel’s Vision and Today’s Cleavages
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a third edition of the annual Václav Havel European Dialogues\, a global series of discussions inspired by Havel’s enduring legacy organised jointly by the Czech Centre London\, SSEES and the Research Centre for the Study of Places\, Identities\, and Memories (PIMs). \n\nOver the last three decades\, the Central European countries have experienced some of the fastest economic growths in the world. The region has joined the ranks of highly developed countries\, and its citizens are wealthier and living longer than ever before. In Czechia\, this transformation was closely tied to the democratic ideals articulated by Václav Havel\, whose vision of an open society and civic responsibility shaped the country’s path during the early years of transition. Yet\, within a generation\, Central Europe has also moved from being one of the most egalitarian regions in Europe to one of the most unequal. This indicates that the growth has not benefited all equally. What are the sources of the Central European miracle\, and who are its main beneficiaries? What are the consequences of the increasing inequalities for these societies\, especially in the context of growing political polarisation? How can we ensure that future growth in the region will be inclusive? \nThe event will be moderated by Jessie Barton Hronešová and will feature an esteemed panel of speakers\, including Zsoka Koczan\, Lead Economist in the Office of the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development\, Lubomír Lízal\, economist and former director of CERGE-EI\, Prague\, Pawel Bukowski\, co-director of the new Research Center for the Study of Places\, Identities\, and Memories (PIMs)\, and a word of welcome by Přemysl Pela\, the director of the Czech Center in London. \nAbout the speakers: \nZsoka Koczan is Associate Director\, Lead Economist in the Office of the Chief Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. SUMMARY:Talk: The Dream Factory - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed author Daniel Swift tells the remarkable story of Shakespeare’s first theatre – the playhouse that came before the Globe. \nAbout the event\nIn 1576\, in a muddy field in Shoreditch\, James Burbage erected London’s first purpose-built commercial playhouse. A place of high culture and quick profit\, run by cunning dreamers\, the theatre for the first time offered London’s players the chance to control what they staged. \nAt a time when playgoing was held to be close to a sin\, this entertainment factory was a flashpoint for controversy\, but it would also become Shakespeare’s first theatre\, where he learned to ply his trade before his company moved to the Globe. \nThrough the life of this little-known playhouse\, Daniel Swift tells the story of how Shakespeare became Shakespeare\, and the Elizabethan stage began to flourish.

SUMMARY:Mapping Medieval Manuscripts (Talk)
DESCRIPTION:Mapping medieval manuscripts: how surviving romance manuscripts are aiding the search for People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe \nMedieval manuscripts offer a unique window into the lives and imaginations of the past. Illuminated pages can point to wealthy patrons\, while the texts themselves reveal the interests and concerns of medieval readers. Some aspects of the medieval world\, however\, are less visible. Tracing the presence of People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe is one such challenge. While representations exist\, the question remains: how can we locate the real people behind the stories?

SUMMARY:Public Lecture - The Garvellach Islands\, Scotland: a rare record of Snowball Earth
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the Cryogenian Period\, around 717 million years ago\, ice caps advanced abruptly to cover the entire planet. Global ice cover is thought to have been attained relatively quickly\, over thousands of years\, because of the albedo effect – that is\, the more ice there is\, the more sunlight is reflected back into space\, and vice versa. After reaching the equator\, ice sheets persisted there for up to 58 million years. Understanding how our planet could have plunged into such extreme cold is still the subject of intense debate\, but there is a problem. Sedimentary records of the moment when ice first reached low latitudes are absent everywhere on Earth\, or so we once thought. \nOff the west coast of Scotland lies a chain of tiny islands called the Garvellachs that may hold some of the clues to a time in Earth’s history known evocatively as ‘Snowball Earth’. The islands host the only known demonstrably transitional record from underlying carbonate rocks of the Tonian period into glacial rocks of the Cryogenian. Sedimentary observations of these late Tonian carbonates can be interpreted as deposition in warm tropical seas\, full of bacterial life\, before an observable transition into an increasingly frigid climate and the definitive movement of ice caps over the land; akin to seeing Greenland-scale ice caps descending on the Caribbean today. Elsewhere on Earth\, this pivotal transition into the Cryogenian period appears to have been removed by the erosive power of glaciation\, resulting in a missing time gap in the sedimentary record. However\, on the Garvellach\,s no such gap is found\, making it a truly unique location globally for Snowball Earth science. \nNew geochronological age constraints from the rocks on the Garvellachs show that they were deposited between 717 and 660 million years ago\, marking the first of two Snowball Earth glaciations in the Cryogenian. Armed with these new-age constraints and the unique preservation of the transition into this global glaciation\, these Scottish islands may prove integral for understanding how and why Earth descended into a Snowball Earth climate state\, whilst having ramifications for defining the geological timescale. \n  \nThis event is free to attend.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture - Lost in illustration: the art (and science) of communicating through graphics
DESCRIPTION:Once upon a time\, a hand-drawn sketch of the outlines of South America and Africa was all it took to make a compelling scientific statement: hey\, don’t these two continents look like they broke apart from each other? Plate tectonics was in its infancy\, data were scarce\, and ideas were still forming. Fast forward to today\, and we have decades of research\, complex datasets\, and sophisticated methods—and our science figures are starting to suffer under the weight of everything\, everywhere\, all at once. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Lucía Pérez-Díaz explores how the role of graphics in science is evolving\, and where it may have gone astray. Drawing (pun intended) on her perspective as a geoscientist and author-illustrator\, she examines how our figures may be falling short—failing not just to communicate clearly\, but to spark curiosity. This matters more than ever\, as science increasingly needs to reach beyond specialist circles and into communities that may meet it with indifference—or even distrust. \nWhen designing scientific figures\, accuracy is important – but so is empathy. Our visuals need to offer viewers a way in\, a path to follow\, and a clear destination. We need to think not only about what audiences can understand\, but what they’ll choose to engage with. From nostalgic 19th-century cross-sections to googly-eyed data plots\, this talk invites us to rethink how we draw science—and how we draw people in. Bring a pencil\, no better time to start than now. \nThis lecture is free to attend.

SUMMARY:Holy to hedonistic: Mapping Clerkenwell’s springs and wells
DESCRIPTION:An Islington Local History Centre lunchtime talk \nJoin archivists from Islington Local History Centre to plunge into Clerkenwell’s history – ranging from the sacred to the profane. Focusing on two locales\, the Clerks’ Well and Islington Spa\, you will have the opportunity to view maps and archival material that tell the story of these aquatic sites of significance. \nThe Clerks’ Well\, an ancient holy well that gave the area its name\, dates to at least the 12th century. Used by biblical performers\, nuns and members of the public\, the well supplied fresh water to the area for hundreds of years. It suffered from contamination and was closed in the 19th century until its rediscovery in 1924. \nInitially a rural retreat from the City of London\, Islington Spa was built around an ancient well-spring and became a health resort and pleasure garden in the late 17th century. Famed for its medicinal waters\, Islington Spa became a fashionable spot for entertainment and music\, but also developed a reputation for debauchery. \nThrough examining historical maps and archival material\, we will chart the development of Clerkenwell and its watery past. \nDoors will open at 1pm and the talk will take place at 1:10-1:50pm. Our lunchtime talks are designed to fit into a lunchbreak\, offering a snapshot of Islington’s fascinating history with enough time to return to your desk for the afternoon. This talk will feature a showcase of original archive material\, so please do not bring food or drink with you to the event. \nThis event is being held in conjunction with Islington Museum’s temporary exhibition ‘Undercurrent: Islington’s Lost Waterways’\, on display until 19 August 2025. Islington Museum is located at 245 St John St.\, EC1V 4NB. \n  \nYou can find accessibility information for 245 St John Street here.

SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Sara Polak
DESCRIPTION:The guest of the next edition of the Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series will be Sara Polak\, an archaeologist\, evolutionary anthropologist\, and technology innovator whose work bridges the humanities and cutting-edge AI research. \nPolak is a co-founder of the Mobilis Institute and the blockchain educational platform ShellProof\, a Visiting Research Fellow and part-time lecturer at the University of Oxford\, and leads the CCHAOS Research group at the Faculty of Information Technology\, Czech Technical University. Her focus lies in the digitisation of cultural heritage and the simulation of civilisational dynamics. Having spent much of her career in the UK and the USA tech sectors\, Polak is passionate about connecting modern technologies with the humanities. She has been named on Forbes’ 30 Under 30\, was recognised as a Top Innovator (2022)\, and received the Business Revolution Award from the UK Department for International Trade. She believes that only through education and interdisciplinary collaboration can humanity fulfil its potential — and perhaps one day survive on Mars. She explores these ideas through the Civilisational Resilience think tank\, which she co-founded. \nIn her talk Archaeology and AI: the last hope for our survival?\, Sara Polak will explore how civilisational resilience — the ability of societies to endure\, adapt\, and thrive through both crises and everyday pressures — increasingly depends on the synergy between technology and the humanities. She will examine how artificial intelligence and archaeology can enrich our understanding of past societies and offer strategies for a more sustainable future. By combining AI-driven archaeological research with humanistic insight\, we can preserve cultural heritage\, learn from historical adaptations\, and help shape ethical\, resilient technologies for generations to come. \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBook Here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/women-in-focus-sara-polak-tickets-1372620447709?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Understanding the Roots of Populism in Central Europe and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:How have rural uprisings and peasant movements shaped modern Central and Eastern European history—and what can they reveal about populism today? In The Last Peasant War: Violence and Revolution in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe (Princeton University Press\, 2025)\, historian Jakub Beneš uncovers the forgotten waves of rural unrest that reshaped politics in the era of the world wars. He will be joined by leading historians Mark Cornwall and Claire Morelon to discuss his book’s fresh perspective on twentieth-century Czech and broader European history\, as well as its relevance for understanding today’s political divides. \n\nThe Last Peasant War: Violence and Revolution in Twentieth-Century Eastern Europe \nPrinceton University Press\, 2025 \nSPEAKERS:\n \nJakub Beneš is Associate Professor in Central European History at University College London\, School of Slavonic and East European Studies. As the fragile negotiations of the International Peace Conference get underway\, typist Stella Rutherford throws herself into her work and the mixture of glamour and devastation the City of Light reveals. She will do anything to escape the grief coming in waves for her beloved brother\, Jack\, buried near Arras. \nHer sister Corran is about to put her academic career to use teaching the troops in France\, a chance to see what the experience was like for countless men\, including her fiancé\, Rob Campbell. \nRob was part of the celebrated Scottish rugby team that was swept up in war fever and mown down in battle. He has been profoundly marked by his time as a surgeon on the front line\, devastated by the incessant grind of the injured\, dying\, and dead. \nThe Paris Peacemakers follows three Scots as they attempt to pick up the pieces of their lives while the fabric of Europe is stitched together for good or ill. \nFlora Johnston Biography \nFlora Johnston lives in Edinburgh\, and The Paris Peacemakers is her second novel. Her love of Scottish history began at St Andrews University and has spanned working at the National Museum of Scotland and a career in heritage interpretation. \nJames Robertson described her debut novel\, What You Call Free (Ringwood Publishing\, 2021)\, as ‘historical fiction of the highest quality’. She has published several nonfiction historical books and now enjoys exploring the different questions we can ask of the past through fiction. \nLisa Highton Biography \nLisa Highton joined Jenny Brown Associates literary agency as an Associate Agent in 2022. \nShe was the Founder and Publisher of Two Roads\, an imprint of John Murray Press/Hachette\, where she published authors including Kirsty Wark\, Sally Magnusson\, Monty Don\, Ruth Hogan\, Janet Skeslien Charles\, Guinevere Glasfurd\, Janet Ellis\, Sarah Haywood\, Susan Calman and Wendy Cope. \nOver a long career in publishing both in the UK and Australia\, where she was publishing director of Doubleday\, HarperCollins and then Hodder\, Lisa has published many bestsellers. She seeks distinctive storytelling\, finding hidden stories with emotional heart and connecting them with readers.
