SUMMARY:L.A. Salami meets Stage Door Guy
DESCRIPTION:L.A. SALAMI: \nAs much a philosopher as a popsmith\, articulate and versatile. One of the premier lyricists of his generation\, he remains curious\, still distinguishing the illusory from the eternal\, the true from the beguiling; keeping the faith\, in his own cynical yet impassioned way. \nL.A. Salami (Lookman Adekunle Salami) is a singer/songwriter from London\, known for crafting magnetic blues-rock songs with a postmodern twist. His love for music began when he first heard Bob Dylan on the radio\, subsequently leading him to explore more blues and folk music and inspiring him to write his own songs; unfortunately\, however\, he could not afford his own instrument and wasn’t introduced to one until he was given a guitar for his 21st birthday. After three months of soul-searching\, tapping into different creative avenues\, and sleeping rough\, Salami eventually had his first few songs written and set out to land some gigs. Success soon came knocking after relentless gigging\, starting with a tour support slot for Lianne La Havas in 2012. The rest is history. \nSTAGE DOOR GUY: \nA Mancunian walks into a bar in New Orleans. He staggers past a guy downing his 5th neat whiskey. They form a band. Stage Door Guy is a post-punk blues duo mash up of Professor Longhair\, The Dead Kennedys and Dr John Cooper Clarke. With three acclaimed albums under their belt\, they were described by Louder Than War’s John Robb’s as: “… a quirky off-kilter slice of snarky swing with a rocking core” \nTheir latest album is the critically acclaimed ‘Stage Door Guy Beach Party’

SUMMARY:Postcards Part 2
DESCRIPTION:An evening of short plays inspired by real holiday postcards \n\n\n\nOur second ‘scratch night’ of the year is a highly entertaining collection of original short pieces\, both comic and dramatic\, inspired by real-life holiday postcards and written by members of our two scriptwriting workshops. Our first Postcards night was a collaboration with Pen to Print in Barking and was staged over two nights at Barking Broadway Theatre and the Sydenham Centre in 2019. \n\n\n\nPresented ‘script in hand’ by our professional cast\, with minimal scenery and props\, expect a diverse range of subjects and styles – from the surreal to the farcical\, from the romantic to the downright dark. \n\n\n\nProducer/co-director Jonathan Kaufman says\, ‘We love our scratch nights\, and so do our audiences – like a box of chocolates\, you never know what you’re going to get! And the cast loves performing them\, too\, with minimal rehearsal and no need to learn their lines. It’s always an adrenaline rush to put these plays on the stage\, and the writers’ feedback is immensely rewarding. \n\n\n\nAt the end of the evening\, we will be inviting the audience to vote for their favourite playlets\, with the winning playwright receiving a small prize. Please note that these evenings are often very popular\, so advance booking is highly recommended. \n\n\n\nThe performance lasts approx 2 hrs inc interval.  \n\n\n\nPlease note this performance is not suitable for children \n\n\n\nTickets: standard price £15\,  Pay a little more £20\,  Pay little less £10 \n\n\n\nAdvance booking online recommended: https://spontaneousproductions.co.uk/postcards-part-2 \n\n\n\nOr book in person at Kirkdale Bookshop (9.30am-5pm Mon-Sat)\, or by phone 020 8778 4701

SUMMARY:Aladdin – Family Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Our first family theatre show of 2023 – and our 23rd since we started at Sydenham Centre – is a brand new\, musical version of the beloved Arabian nights tale ALADDIN! As always\, with Spontaneous\, expect a bit of a twist…young Aladdin dreams of a life of lazing around\, maybe kicking a ball now and again\, and one day being rich and marrying a Princess. So when the malicious magician Abanazar promises him a ‘get rich quick’ scheme\, how can he resist? But when he finds himself trapped in a cave with only a dusty lamp for company\, what’s a poor boy to do? \n\n\n\nFeaturing original songs and music by Paul Tornbohm\, video effects and animation by Joe Kaufman of Red Kite Films and costumes by Jackie Poulett\, expect a highly original musical show from the makers of Tales of Beatrix Potter\, Rapunzel\, and last December’s The Blues Brothers Grimm. With lots of surprises\, mystery\, mayhem and a magical flying carpet for good measure\, this will be an unmissable event this Spring! \n\n\n\nAfter her debut as Princess Yasmeena in Sinbad the Sailor in 2021 we’re delighted that Valentina Pakou is returning – in the dual role of Aladdin’s Mother and the Princess – as well as choreographing the dance routines\, plus Spontaneous favourite Paul-D Stephenson (last seen as Prince Baraka in Rapunzel\, and The Gingerbread Man\, Sinbad the Sailor) as the malign magician Abanazar. Then making a very special appearance on video is Spontaneous regular William Hastings as the Genie! Last but not least\, Jyo Miarkali makes her Spontaneous debut as that lazy scamp Aladdin himself! \n\n\n\n Our family shows are always very popular so we advise early booking to avoid disappointment. Tickets may be purchase in advance online (recommended) or at Kirkdale Bookshop in person (or by phone 020 8778 4701\, Mon-Sat 9.30am-5pm). Any remaining seats will be available on the door from 30 mins before show start time.

SUMMARY:Frighteners 2022: 'Museum of Monsters'
DESCRIPTION:Dare you enter Sydenham’s historical Museum of Monsters? Founded by the irascible Ovaltine-merchant Sir Henry Hornbeam in 1881\, it has preserved relics and mysteries from as far afield as the Hindu Kush\, Outer Mongolia\, and Penge. Explore each room and marvel at ‘living’ exhibits from Transylvania\, Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory in Geneva\, an unopened tomb in the Nile Valley\, and a preserved werewolf’s lair from the Black Forest. Look out for the zombie tour guides – and as to the screeching ghost lady in white that supposedly haunts the museum’s corridors\, surely that’s just an urban legend…? \nThis is a ‘walk-through’ installation\, with professional performers in character as exhibits and tour guides\, creating an immersive ‘Museum of Monsters’ experience. Entry is at the visitors’ own risk – an early escape via the Fire Exit is optional! \nThe show is designed to be entertaining with an emphasis on comic scares. If the experience proves too overwhelming\, you are very welcome to leave at any time; just ask a steward (in yellow t-shirts) to show you the way out. *Note for families: we advise that this immersive experience is unsuitable for very sensitive children and those with a fear of the dark. \nCast includes: Kate Barry\, Oliver Byng\, William Hastings\, Angus Hepburn\, Megan Madaleine\, Chioma Nwalioba\, and Jodyanne Richardson \nScenario and script: Jonathan Kaufman and Jane Walker \nCostume design and associate producer Jackie Poulett

SUMMARY:The ROSES of WHITECHAPEL - Play
DESCRIPTION:A staged reading of the acclaimed play by Jonathan Kaufman and Martin Stiff. London’s East End\, 1888. Terror is stalking Whitechapel’s streets\, and for the frightened women who become its victims\, their stories – and lives – are about to reach their gruesome end. But these women have tales to tell: as one by one\, they share their histories\, turning the tables on the cypher that is Jack the Ripper. \nFirst staged to critical acclaim at the Brockley Jack Theatre in 2000 and successfully revived in 2010 at the Greenwich Playhouse and The Lion & The Unicorn Pub Theatre\, Kentish Town\, Jonathan Kaufman and Martin Stiff’s play celebrates its 21st birthday this year. Now Spontaneous Productions reunites several members of its original casts for a semi-staged\, rehearsed reading over two evenings. \nReviews and audience comments \nA compelling example of innovative fringe theatre\, Cleverly written and staged (Vincent Manning\, Remote Goat) \nA rewarding and rich portrayal of the way of life of five very different women\, vivid performances intensely moving moments (online review by Dave Jordan) \nGripping\, emotional stuff\,  the climax to the performance was incredibly moving and thought-provoking and gave a whole new angle on the Jack the Ripper story. All in all\, a fascinating\, unique aspect of the tale. (‘Furtherwick’ Casebook Forum) \nThe play portrays the real hardships these women suffered\, and for once\, the women\, not their murderers\, are the centre of the story. For any Ripper enthusiast this is the play to see. (online review by Liz Evenstad) \n‘I thought the show was brilliant. The script and direction made us think differently about a story we all know – I love the way you used each character to tell the story\, not just as a participant but as an observer.’ (Elouise Calabria) \nTWO performances only from Sat 20-Sun 21 November 2021\nShow at 8 pm\, lasts approx 2 hours inc interval\nPlease note this performance is not suitable for children\nVenue: Upstairs at the Sydenham Centre\, Sydenham London SE26 5QX \nTickets: £15 standard\, £20 pay a little more\, £10 pay a little less

SUMMARY:The ROSES of WHITECHAPEL - Jack The Ripper Theatre Play
\nReviews and audience comments \nA compelling example of innovative fringe theatre. Cleverly written and staged (Vincent Manning\, Remote Goat) \nA rewarding and rich portrayal of the way of life of five very different women\, vivid performances and intensely moving moments (online review by Dave Jordan) \nGripping\, emotional stuff. The climax to the performance was incredibly moving and thought-provoking and gave a whole new angle on the Jack the Ripper story. All in all a fascinating new aspect of the tale. (‘Furtherwick’ Casebook Forum) \nThe play portrays the real hardships these women suffered\, and for once the women\, not their murderers are the centre of the story. For any Ripper enthusiast\, this is the play to see. (review by Liz Evenstad) \n‘I thought the show was absolutely brilliant\, the script and direction really made us think differently about a story we all know – I love the way you used each character to tell the story\, not just as a participant but as an observer.’ (Elouise Calabria) \nTWO performances only from Sat 20-Sun 21 November 2021\nShow at 8 pm\, lasts approx 2 hours inc interval\nPlease note this performance is not suitable for children\nVenue: Upstairs at the Sydenham Centre\, Sydenham London SE26 5QX \nTickets: £15 standard\, £20 pay a little more\, £10 pay a little less
