SUMMARY:Gothic Opera presents: Rip Van Winkle
DESCRIPTION:Rip Van Winkle is an English-language operetta by Robert Planquette based on two stories by Washington Irving – Rip van Winkle and the famous Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The piece premiered at the Comedy Theatre in London in 1882\, running for around 300 performances – but although popular at the time\, it has not been seen in its English version since the nineteenth century. \n\n\n\nWith a cast of exceptional singers\, Gothic Opera will approach this charming piece with fresh eyes\, reinvigorating it with a new chamber arrangement and newly-written dialogue. \n\n\n\nAfter their success with their 2021 La Nonne Sanglante (The Bloody Nun)\, which won Best Opera Production at the Off-West End Awards 2022\, Gothic Opera are returning to the atmospheric Hoxton Hall this Halloween. Don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:Sir Harrison Birtwistle: A Tribute
DESCRIPTION:“The purpose of life is to pass the message on”\,: so reads the inscription on an artwork by Bob Law\, which was the inspiration for The Message\, the duet which begins this concert in which London Sinfonietta pays tribute to one of its longest-standing collaborators\, Sir Harrison Birtwistle. This concert spans Birtwistle’s varied output\, ranging from the duet written for the Ensemble’s 40th birthday to the epic and theatrical Verses\, the first piece the composer wrote for the London Sinfonietta and requiring musicians to walk around the stage in strange and ritual processions.  In the second half\, performed side-by-side with musicians from the Royal Academy of Music\, The Fields of Sorrow was first composed for amateur musicians\, while In Broken Images\, co-commissioned by the London Sinfonietta\, celebrates the formation of the Italian state.  Tonight’s concert is a showcase of an enormous\, varied and mysterious ingenuity – and at its heart\, it is a celebration of our relationship with the late\, great composer.

SUMMARY:The Werewolf + The Last Sorcerer
DESCRIPTION:Gothic Opera returns to the stage this Halloween with their first-ever double bill\, Le Loup-garou (The Werewolf) and Le dernier sorcier (The Last Sorcerer)\, which is taking place at the Round Chapel in Hackney. United by their supernatural\, fairytale-like themes and their subtly sinister but light-hearted character\, this pair of operas will invite the audience into an intricately crafted world full of mysterious magical creatures. The opera is sung in French with English subtitles and newly-written spoken dialogue in English. \n\n\n\nFresh from success in the Opera Production category at the Off-West End Awards (with their 2021 UK premiere of Gounod’s La Nonne sanglante)\, Gothic Opera is continuing its mission to open opera up to new audiences and to inspire people to come and experience rarely-heard operas in atmospheric\, evocative locations. This year’s performance promises to shed new light upon the unjustly neglected work of the nineteenth-century female composers Louise Bertin and Pauline Viardot. \n\n\n\nGothic Opera is working with some of the brightest upcoming singers in London to bring these operas to life in the UK for the very first time. They will be joined by a predominantly female creative team\, including stage directors Eleanor Burke\, part of the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker 2022 intake\, who will direct Le Loup-garou\, and Edwina Strobl\, who will direct Le dernier sorcier. The set and costume designer is award-winning Anna Kelsey. The operas will be conducted by musical director Juliane Gallant\, a member of Tapestry Opera’s inaugural Women in Musical Leadership Fellowship. \n\n\n\nFeaturing newly-written dialogue – which brings the operas up to date while responding to the humour of the original – and with a stellar creative team and cast of brilliant\, passionate musicians\, Gothic Opera’s 2022 Halloween production is set to achieve the highest artistic standards\, opening these neglected works up to a wider public. Challenging audiences to experience something brand new this Halloween.

SUMMARY:Jo Harrop & British Standard Time
DESCRIPTION:Watch Jo Harrop take on Jazz numbers with British Standard Time.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n‘British songwriters rule the world’  The Guardian. \n‘British Standard Time’ is a swinging journey through the best of UK songwriting – from the jazz-era master Ray Noble and Eric Maschwitz to music theatre writers Antony Newley and Lionel Bart\, from the pop giants Lennon & McCartney to Elvis Costello and Amy Winehouse. Velvet-voiced Jo Harrop and pianist/arranger Alex Webb mine a rich seam of material and present it in a cool\, contemporary jazz format. \n\nExpect classics like ‘These Foolish Things’\, ‘The Very Thought Of You’\, ‘As Long As He Needs Me’\, ‘Who Can I Turn To’\, ‘Norwegian Wood’ and ‘Almost Blue’ as well as forgotten gems by John Dankworth and Victor Feldman plus some carefully-chosen originals and a couple of surprises. \n“A singing sensation…. her voice is amazing” Bebop Spoken Here blog on Jo Harrop. \nJo Harrop \nAccording to Blues & Soul Magazine\, Durham-born Jo Harrop “was born to sing jazz”.  Her warm\, intimate voice reflects her childhood absorption of the records of Billie Holiday\, Anita O’Day\, Julie London and Peggy Lee\, the vocal masters who inspired her to sing.  In the pop world she has provided backing vocals for major names including Neil Diamond and Enrique Iglesias; her co-written song ‘Little Laughter’ was recorded by Acoustic Alchemy on their album ‘Radio Contact’.  She has worked all the London jazz venues including the Jazz Café where she supported The Blind Boys of Alabama; her fans include composer Howard Blake OBE and jazz pioneer Courtney Pine CBE.  Jo also guested on the recent album ‘Call Me Lucky’ by Alex Webb & The Copasetics\, delivering what jazzman.com called ‘a smoothly sumptuous vocal’ on the Webb original ‘End of The Affair’\, with the album receiving four-star reviews in The Guardian and Evening Standard. \nAlex Webb \nAlex Webb is a songwriter\, arranger and pianist; His songs have been recorded by jazz singers China Moses\, Mina Agossi\, Sandra Nkake\, Liane Carroll\, Allan Harris\, Alexia Gardner and Alexander Stewart\, among others. He is the creative force behind a number of ‘words-and-music’ productions\, including ‘Lush Life’ (about composer/arranger Billy Strayhorn)\, ‘Charlie Parker on Dial’ and ‘Fever: Jo Harrop sings Peggy Lee’.  His show ‘Cafe Society Swing’ has enjoyed several theatre runs in London and one in New York\, where he received the New York Times ‘Critic’s Pick’. \nLine up: Alex Webb (piano)\, J Darwish (bass)\, Pete Hill (drums)\, Denys Baptiste (saxes)\, Andy Davies (trumpet). \nTickets Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
