SUMMARY:Kernow in the City 2020
DESCRIPTION:KERNOW IN THE CITY 2020 \nNow in its eleventh year\, Kernow in the City will return this Pirantide with London’s annual mini-festival of Cornish contemporary music and culture. Once again\, the Rich Mix venue in the heart of Shoreditch plays host\, with an eclectic mix of Cornish pop\, folk and rock music\, comedy and poetry in celebration of St Piran’s Day\, Cornwall’s patron saint. \nFor our headline act this year\, stand by for the maelstrom that is HANTERHIR – the psyche-folk rocker/whatevers return to the Rich Mix off the back of their critically-acclaimed album ‘The Saving of Cadan’. They’ve been described as ‘a cacophony of Celtic wildness\, granite and storms roaring across the grooves\, sung in English and Cornish in an overwhelming Atlantic tsunami of sound’ – sounds about right to us! \n\n\n \nConquering just about every corner of the UK\, THE REZNER have burst onto the scene emphatically over the last 12 months. These guys are quickly snowballing into one of the most exciting groups around. It’s easy to hear why they’ve had impressive early radio support from the likes of Huw Stephens on BBC Radio 1. The Rezner overflow with attitude\, aggression and spirit\, with addictively catchy vocal hooks. After having honed their performance at the likes of Leopallooza\, Port Eliot\, Isle of Wight\, Burning Man\, Beautiful Days\, Boardmasters and The Great Estate festivals\, we are delighted to have them on our KITC 2020 line-up. \nTHE ROWAN TREE is an award-winning folk band\, honoured for their outstanding contribution to Cornish music and culture. Formed for the 2017 Pan Celtic festival encompassing traditional music predominantly from Cornwall and original pieces with a Celtic feel\, they have a unique and engaging sound. For KITC 2020\, the band will showcase their multi-media Arts Council-funded project\, ‘Kolar’s Gold’ telling the story of the Cornish mining community in India through collaboration with musicians from across the world. With their second album coming later this year\, expect to hear more songs in the Cornish language. \nKnown across Cornwall for her sweet honey melodies with a whiskey kick\, we are delighted that LOUELLA JADE EKE will open Kernow in the City 2020 this year. With songs reaching from folk to blues to rock and roll\, her performance is a roller coaster of emotion and feel. We think Louella’s stunning voice and her phenomenal ability with the guitar will have the hair on the back of your neck standing up. \nThe night will be fuelled with ales from Skinner’s Brewery and Cornish pasties from Ann’s Bakery in Helston and will include a rousing collective ‘shout’ of Trelawny and all your favourite Cornish pub songs\, led by the Wrecker’s Wednesday team\, KitC’s monthly social night spin-off event. So\, if you’re in London and you love Cornwall\, come one and all to celebrate our national day at Kernow in the City on March 7th.

SUMMARY:Me and My Friends at Grand Junction W2 - Afrobeat Concert

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:Instant Expert: Wonders in Space
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of exploring the mysteries and marvels of the universe with six leading scientists. You will start where everything began\, at the Big Bang. Throughout the day\, you will hear about the formation of galaxies\, the latest research into our nearest star\, the Sun\, the mysterious physics of black holes\, the quest to find life on Mars and the discovery of habitable planets outside our solar system. \n\n\n\nThe day will be hosted by a New Scientist journalist and there will be plenty of time to ask your questions to our galaxy of space experts. \n\n\n\nTickets for our popular Instant Expert one-day masterclasses are strictly limited and usual sell out quickly\, so book now to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\nTopics covered will include: \n\n\n\n\nBig Bang\n\n\n\nBlack Holes\n\n\n\nFormation of Galaxies\n\n\n\nMars Exploration\n\n\n\nExoplanets\n\n\n\nThe Sun\n\n\n\n\nTalks and speakers:\n\n\n\nThe Big Bang and the Atomic Universe\n\n\n\nKatherine Blundell\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nThe Universe began 13.8 billion years ago with the Big Bang and has been expanding ever since. In this talk\, Katherine Blundell will explain the recent revolutions in our understanding of the ‘Early Universe’\, which refers to the first few seconds after the Big Bang. She will explain: \n\n\n\n+ How have these crucial moments determined our universe today+? What is meant by ‘the horizon problem’ and ‘the flatness problem’+? How can we investigate events that happened so long ago \n\n\n\nBlack Holes: the most fascinating objects in the universe\n\n\n\nChristopher Reynolds\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Cambridge\n\n\n\nBlack holes are some of the strangest and most fascinating objects in the Universe. A place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out sounds like something out of science fiction. But how do black holes form\, how many are in our galaxy and beyond\, and do new and future technologies such as gravitational wave detectors and next-generation X-ray telescopes change how we observe them? \n\n\n\nGalaxies: building blocks of the universe\n\n\n\nClaudia Maraston\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Portsmouth\n\n\n\nGalaxies are vast collections of stars\, gas\, and dust\, held together by gravity. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are scattered throughout the universe. They are the building blocks that chart the history of our universe\, but how they form and evolve remains a mysterious process. Join Claudia Maraston as she reveals how her research modelling the galaxies of our universe is expanding our knowledge of cosmology. \n\n\n\nLooking for life on Mars\n\n\n\nAndrew Coates\, Deputy Director (solar system)\, Mullard Space Science Laboratory\, University College London\n\n\n\nAre we alone in the Universe? With missions to Mars and outer planet moons\, we hope to find out. We live in an exciting time for Mars exploration. In this talk\, Andrew Coates will discuss why Mars is a key target for space exploration\, look at some of the early results from the 2021 missions for context\, and outline our hopes for PanCam and the Rosalind Franklin rover. \n\n\n\nThe Sun: Our nearest star\n\n\n\nSarah Matthews\, Professor of Solar Physics\, University College London\n\n\n\nWhat has our nearest star taught us about all the other stars in the universe? Data from missions such as Japan’s Hinode and ESA’s Solar Orbiter has revealed much about its magnetic field\, solar flares and its corona. Join Sarah Matthews\, a solar physicist at University College London as she shares her insights on the Sun’s activity\, structure and impact on Earth based on her work on these probes. \n\n\n\nExoplanets: Life beyond the solar system?\n\n\n\nChris Impey\, Astronomer\, University of Arizona\n\n\n\nSince the first exoplanet\, or a planet beyond our solar system\, was discovered in 1995\, over 4\,000 more have been pinpointed\, including hundreds of Earth-like planets\, many of them habitable\, detected by the Kepler satellite. Join Chris Impey for a state-of-the-art account of what’s behind this accelerating progress\, what’s next\, and what it might mean for humanity’s future. \n\n\n\nWho should attend? \n\n\n\nIs anyone interested in the mysteries and marvels of space\, whatever your age or background? Whether you’re a scientist\, a student or simply a fascinated human being\, Instant Expert: Wonders of Space offers the chance to learn directly from the experts at our one-day masterclass. \n\n\n\nBenefits of attending: \n\n\n\n\nBecome an expert in one day\n\n\n\nInformal set-up\, meet like-minded people\n\n\n\nOpen your mind\, be inspired\n\n\n\nA unique chance to ask your burning questions to our experts\n\n\n\n\nWhat’s included in your ticket: \n\n\n\n\nIn-depth and engaging talks from six leading scientists\n\n\n\nAsk-an-expert Wonders of Space Question Time session\n\n\n\nYour chance to meet our six speakers and New Scientist host\n\n\n\nBuffet lunch\, plus morning and afternoon refreshments\n\n\n\nExclusive Instant Expert certificate\n\n\n\nExclusive on-the-day New Scientist subscription deal\, book and merchandise offers
