Having explored this personal song-writing approach with her former band\, Muncie Girls\, with their punchy yet tender punk-flecked songs\, Lande released her debut solo record Going To Hell in 2021 via queer and trans run independent label Get Better Records. Going To Hell presents its raw honesty amongst understatedly luminous melodies and candid\, unpretentious lyrics which contemplate\, among other things\, her experience coming out as gay. Lande’s music sits beautifully alongside such essential artists as The Wedding Present\, The Sundays\, The Replacements\, Sleeper and Sharon Van Etten. \nWith her debut album barely a year old\, 2022 saw Lande armed with a whole new collection of song-form vignettes and musings on her life and experiences with her second album\, House Without a View (partnering again with Get Better Records and Prize Sunflower Records in the UK). Kicking off where the last record left off\, House Without a View continues to explore ideas of queer identity\, as well as her changing relationship with gender\, dealing with childhood trauma\, and confronting the isolation and period of adjustment brought by the pandemic. Lead single ‘Gay Space Cadets’ daydreams about a life of excitement and adventure instead of being “forced to buy into capitalism and become a pathetic\, losing player in a game that you hate.” Although there’s darkness and sadness within the record\, there’s also some shining beacons of positivity and a lighthearted side\, albeit with a side of frustration. \nLande has toured in the UK\, Europe\, Canada and Australia supporting the likes of Alvvays\, Laura Jane Grace\, The Beths\, Throwing Muses and the legend that is Tricky. On his fifth LP\, Big Black Plume\, Beach reveals the vitalizing power of connection in an often hostile world. They are a Sydney-based band born from a curious seed\, the self taught project of artist Kata Szász-Komlós alongside Jasper Craig-Adams and Tom Stephens. Seemingly coming with an unmistakable charm and yearning. Mapping the band’s existence through their recorded output is to bear witness to the flux of three people learning to respond to one another and gently ossify into a collective vision. Early recordings reflect a band imagining themselves into being whilst new release\, A Profound Non-Event (Tough Love)\, observes a clear shift in conviction.\nhttps://dailytoll.bandcamp.com/ \nGUY BLACKMAN is a songwriter’s songwriter. His deftly constructed songs deal frankly with issues of love\, sexuality and commitment. If Serge Gainsbourg\, Tim Hardin or Kevin Ayers wrote songs set in gay go-go bars or on adult camming websites\, you might get close to an idea of Guy’s approach. ‘Out Of Sight’ is Guy’s first solo album in nearly 20 years (out June 13th)\, a belated follow-up to his well-loved 2008 album Adult Baby. Every note on their debut record ‘Beehive Mind’ (out now on PPM) is a little bit sad on its own but then they’re organized in a way that you don’t actually notice. The songs breathe in warmth and patience\, they are immediate and sweet. And then they start to meander. To address the weight of the world without speaking of weariness. To march the song to breathlessness but loosen your grip when the band wanders. To tell all your secrets but shield your loved ones from vulnerability. To dress up in the charm and temptation of the pop song but maintain a core of peculiarity\, of a single voice trying to navigate this world. This is the project of the Spatulas. Think of the few songwriters who know they’re the only ones in the world who could write their songs. Their chaotic live shows combine elements of noise\, cryptic metal overtones\, performance art\, and gallows humor and feature macabre props\, flashing lights\, stage sets and costumes. There are hardly any instruments in this group\, but they make such a racket you’d never know it. The bass and the percussion sound like they’re having a great time\, telling each other jokes. Then the words come in and it all locks together in these strange\, hypnotic rhythms. I just listen to the stories and laugh and cry and get scared and wonder what they were ever thinking.\nRecent album ‘Basket Fever’ (Magic Pictures\, 2023) features electrocuted bells\, backwards parts\, rusty horns; I’m pretty sure I even heard a clarinet in there somewhere. There’s this one part where it all seems to come back around\, where they took some gang vocals from the very first demo they ever recorded and slowed it way down. When they first started; I thought they were some goofy kids making music about the end of the world\, back when that seemed a little further away\, like it was going to be fun. They were all laughing and making these funny ghost sounds\, but now everyone’s older and the ghosts are real\, a great whoosh of bygone spirits and cold air. It’s bone chilling. There’s plenty to be upset about\, but it’s not really an Evil Sword song until that grimace has been twisted up into a smile. \nhttps://evilsword.bandcamp.com/album/basket-fever \nSHAKE CHAIN have been busy demolishing audiences and expectations for the best part of the last five years. Vocalist Kate Mahony sets that standard by anything from crawling through the audience’s legs in a bright yellow raincoat to crying and washing her hands in a nearby toilet\, as the rest of the band start the set. The four-piece from London are completed by Robert Eyres (Synth/Guitar)\, Chris Hopkins (Bass/Synth/Samples) and Joe Fergey (Drums). Shake Chain are built of nervy bass lines\, twitchy guitars that jolt and jerk and tack sharp drums\, overridden by screeching vocal slurs and sampled television. Kate’s singing is a unique embrace of flights of atonal fancy\, head-first repetition and ecstatic frenzy. Opinion-dividing arguably\, but singular in making Shake Chain dauntingly brilliant. The band’s debut album ’Snake Chain’ was released by Upset The Rhythm. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/snake-chain \nSPLIT APEX are Jussi Palmusaari (guitar\, electronics and percussion) and Peter Blundell (voice and bass). On their self-titled cassette (out now) release they combine restless sonic textures\, oddball phrasing within barely-contained song structures held together by moth-woven threads. Seemingly governed by an unknowable gravitational pull that tugs hither and yon\, the duo lays out their statement of intent through a brief suite of intimate nocturnes. The release marks the first work for Palmusaari since leaving his native Finland where he played with the band\, Preesens\, in the late-90s/early-00s. Ben Chasny’s project is an experimental amalgam of new folk\, drone music\, percussion and strange textures\, with Chasny delivering an outpouring of eclectic releases in the early 2000s for various small labels before finding a longstanding home on Drag City. In 2003\, Chasny began an association with Comets on Fire\, which led to him becoming a full-time touring and recording band member. After recording and touring extensively with Comets on Fire in 2004\, Chasny returned to the studio and issued the moving and beautiful School of the Flower on Drag City in January 2005. Sun Awakens and Shelter from the Ash arrived in 2006 and 2007. After touring and a break in 2008\, Six Organs began what would become a prolific return to force\, releasing 18 astonishing records up to the current time. First was the release of the sonically expansive – and very electric – Luminous Night\, followed by the double-disc retrospective RTZ\, both of which appeared on Drag City. Chasny also plays in 200 Years alongside Elisa Ambrogio (of Magik Markers)\, with Donovan Quinn (Skygreen Leopards) in the project New Bums\, and is also a member of tightly-wound improv unit Rangda\, accompanied by Sir Richard Bishop and Chris Corsano. \nChasny more recently developed a card-based creative system called Hexadic for making music. He released several related albums before resuming his primary project with new work like 2021’s The Veiled Sea and the 2024 Shackleton collaboration Jinxed by Being. This year\, Six Organs also released a solo album\, Time Is Glass\, consisting of haunted\, unsettled rural folk sounds. With Time is Glass\, Six Organs of Admittance is captured once again in the intricate tangle of the fretboards\, soaring in open skies above. Like lens flare cutting through the speakers\, spiderwebs cracking the windshield that holds back all the onrushing reality. An accomplished collaborator with projects that include Katinka Kleijn (Stir\, 2019)\, Nathan Bowles (Keys\, 2021)\, and Ryley Walker (SpiderBeetleBee\, 2017)\, MacKay is also a solo artist creating multi-dimensional works such as Esker (2017)\, Fountain Fire (2019) Scarf (2020)\, and Locust Land (2024)\, all released on Drag City Records. Bill’s music is a visceral crackling where it meets the air\, and Locust Land can’t help but reflect its era more than any other in his discography. A restless energy and urgency are repeatedly felt — in the driving momentum of “Keeping in Time\,” “Glow Drift\,” and “When I Was Here” — while a dogged persistence radiates from the tone colours and percussion of “Oh\, Pearl.” The sense of searching\, displacement and longing in vocal tracks “Keeping in Time\,” “Half of You\,” and “When I Was Here” speak literally to the tumult of current vibrations. This introversion was one reason he began playing music as a toddler—to communicate without speaking to identify with others without directly representing words. It has worked\, too\, with Cohen’s terrific stint in the mighty Deerhoof and his captivating art-rock act The Curtains\, preceding production and session work for the likes of Weyes Blood\, Kurt Vile\, Le Ren\, and Marina Allen. Somewhere along that long way\, Cohen started writing lyrics. He found that\, though it didn’t come naturally\, the process offered a new sense of self-discovery and reckoning\, a way to see himself and the world from unexpected angles. His three twilit albums of casually complicated pop during the last decade radiated these epiphanies: handling family strife\, navigating advancing age\, and understanding social woes. \nBut Cohen has never had as much to sing so directly as he does on ‘Paint a Room’\, his first album in five years and his debut for Hardly Art. Suppose Cohen’s meanings have previously lurked inside the tessellated musical layers he built alone. In that case\, they are newly clear and resonant here\, animated and underscored for the first time by a band playing in real-time. There is the endless miasma of state violence on the subversively melodious opener “Damage\,” the existential exhaustion of modernity on the horn-traced jangle “Laughing”. With ‘Paint a Room’\, Cohen’s music feels like a warm spring breeze\, easy to love and gentle to feel. The Detroit group formed somewhere in the mid-aughts by songwriter\, vocalist\, guitarist\, and sole consistent band member Kevin Boyer\, who enlisted various friends to cultivate a raw\, rudimentary punk sound that manages to get back to basics while at the same time presenting abstract perspectives and weird concepts not normally explored by your everyday garage band. There have been mutations over the years as the band toured regularly and released a run of solid albums with labels like Siltbreeze and In The Red\, but with every reformation\, Tyvek still didn’t sound quite like anyone else. Their new album\, the self-released Overground (Ginkgo\, 2023)\, stays true to their reputation for delivering hit after hit of blistering punk and remains tightly wound until it unspools into the dreamlike title track\, an extended post-Velvets plea for human decency. Their sophomore album ‘Behold’ (out now on Upset The Rhythm)\, is a testament to Parsnip at their most creative\, catchy and collaborative. ‘Behold’ showcases the multi-talents of all four members\, with spirited performances adding sparkle to the thirteen tracks. Paris Richens lets the bass playfully roam. Carolyn Hawkins tumbles\, feeling into the drum rumble. Stella Rennex’s guitar soars alongside her saxophone work whilst Rebecca Liston tenderly attends to an animated keyboard. Everyone sings amidst this lush canopy. \nOn ‘Behold’\, Parsnip explores consciousness’s inner and outer realms with quick wits and some seriously quality jangle and jolt. ‘The Light’ is a whip-smart workout\, sprouting naturally from the propulsive nature of their debut album ‘When the Tree Bears Fruit’ (Trouble In Mind\, 2019). Drawing comparisons with Dolly Mixture\, Sara Goes Pop and Look Blue Go Purple\, Parsnip is an animated ensemble full of life\, emotional complexity and humour.
