SUMMARY:Debate: Baldwin vs Buckley
DESCRIPTION:Broadcast live on the BBC from The Cambridge Union Society\, the debate between Baldwin — an African American writer\, activist\, and leading literary voice of the civil rights movement — and William F. Buckley Jr.\, America’s most prominent conservative intellectual\, became one of the most influential debates in race relations in America. Two deeply opposed thinkers confronted one another with passion and conviction\, but also within the discipline of civility\, reason\, and public discourse. Their exchange\, recreated in Debate: Balwin Vs Buckley\, laid bare the deep divisions at the heart of American democracy that continue to shape present day. \nDebate: Balwin Vs Buckley is presented by the Brooklyn-based arts organisation the american vicarious\, following UK and US tours\, and a London premiere at Stone Nest in 2023. In January 2026\, the company will present the London premiere of Our America Queen at Bridewell Theatre\, examining the real-life historical figure Kate Chase\, the most influential woman in 19th century politics. Earlier this year\, the company premiered the genre-defying Fight for America! at Stone Nest\, a large-scale participatory art installation and tactical tabletop wargame exploring the events of January 6\, 2021. \nCasting includes Eric T. Miller (Nyad\, 2023) portraying William F. Buckley Jr. opposite Arnell Powell (Hidden Figures\, 2016) as James Baldwin. Christopher Wareham (Our American Queen) will return to his role as David Heycock and as well as Tom Kiteley (Wicked: Part One) as Jeremy Burford.

SUMMARY:Why Ash Regan’s ‘Unbuyable’ bill is right for Scotland: Unravelling the myths around the Nordic Model
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted that Ash Regan\, independent MSP for Edinburgh Eastern\, will be joining us on Sunday\, 11 January for a webinar to discuss her Unbuyable bill. The bill seeks to lessen the harms from prostitution in Scotland through a holistic approach known as the Nordic Model. \nAsh will be joined by Venessa\, a survivor of the Scottish sex industry and Heli St Luce. The seminar will be introduced and chaired by Emily Husain. \nFollowing a short presentation by each speaker\, our panel will answer your questions\, which you can submit during the seminar or in advance by email. \nThe Unbuyable bill\, officially the Prostitution\, Offences and Support (Scotland) Bill\, reflects the Nordic Model approach to prostitution\, first introduced in Sweden in 1999. Here selling of sex by individual women is decriminalised\, but the buying of sexual services becomes a criminal offence. Crucially\, the Unbuyable bill also provides extensive support services for those wishing to exit prostitution and will clear any previous convictions a woman may have for soliciting. \nUnfortunately\, there are many myths around the Nordic model\, often circulated by organisations purporting to act in the best interests of sex workers. Some of these take the form of bad faith arguments\, others rely on falsifiable data\, while others still infantilise men or romanticise what is in reality a dangerous and unromantic activity. \nWhatever your views on the Unbuyable bill\, please join us for what will be an interesting and informative webinar. \nThe webinar is free\, but you need to register in advance. \nWebinar Details\nThis webinar will be hosted in Zoom and is expected to last about 90 minutes. We will email registered attendees shortly before the event with details of how to join. If you can’t see the email\, please check your spam folders. \nQuestions\nThere will be an option to submit questions during the event\, but you are welcome to email in advance any questions you would like our panellists to consider. Please put ‘Webinar Question’ in the subject line and email it to info@nordicmodelnow.org. Time constraints mean\, however\, that we will be limited in how many questions we can address. \nThis is a mixed event\nThis event is open to everyone. The event will include discussion of some difficult issues\, including male violence to women and children. We ask everyone\, but particularly men\, to be mindful of this and how members of the audience may find this triggering because it resonates with their own experiences of male violence. We ask everyone to be open and respectful. \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/why-ash-regans-unbuyable-bill-is-right-for-scotland-tickets-1972612307513

SUMMARY:The Right to Protest: A Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation about our right to protest\, and its evolving role in shaping a better future. Protest is recognised not only as a human right\, but also as a powerful catalyst for change. Young people\, historically at the forefront of activism\, continue to engage in protests on issues such as the climate crisis\, social inequalities\, and international conflicts. \nHowever\, recent government legislation\, including the Policing Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023\, new forms of technology and surveillance\, and increasingly dispersed centres of power\, are changing how we think about dissent\, and what is possible to achieve. \nThe 2024 Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue will explore this evolving landscape of protest in the 21st century\, deciphering what these changes may mean for all of us. A panel of research\, student\, and activist voices\, chaired by The Rt Hon the Baroness Usha Prashar\, will debate the new dynamics of protest\, and the impact of new government legislation. \nOur speakers will include Dr Daniella Lock (University of Oxford) and Jodie Beck (Liberty)\, with further details to be announced. \n  \n14 May 2024 from 6:30-8:30pm at Goodenough College\, London \n  \nTickets: £10 (£5 concessions) including light refreshments \n  \nVisit cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/events to book

SUMMARY:Václav Havel European Dialogues 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Czech Centre\, together with the Cardiff University\, Oxford University and UCL\, and in collaboration with the Václav Havel Library\, organises the second annual symposium celebrating the legacy of Václav Havel. Starting in Cardiff on 10th of October\, the event will then move to Oxford on 11th October and finish at London’s UCL on 12th of October. \nFollowing a word of welcome from Přemysl Pela (Czech Centre London) we feature a discussion with celebrated Czech author Jáchym Topol\, author of i.a. A Sensitive Person (Eng. trans.\, Yale\, 2023); Angel Station (Eng. trans.\, Dalkey Archive\, 2017); The Devil’s Workshop (Eng. trans.\, Portobello\, 2013); Gargling With Tar (Eng. trans.\, Portobello\, 2010); and City/Sister/Silver (Eng. trans. Catbird\, 2000)\, who will talk about practicing creative literature in the final years of Czechoslovak Communism and the early years thereafter. \nFollowed by a roundtable discussion: \n‘Gaming the System: Language\, Conformism\, and Breaking Conventions\, From Václav Havel’s Absurdism to the Age of X’ \n2023 marks the 60th anniversary of The Garden Party\, one of Havel’s most famous plays. Often understood as an Absurdist critique of modern bureaucracy\, the play is also a tale about an ambitious young man who becomes a master of ‘gaming the system’. Havel’s protagonist Hugo thus embodies a paradox: he shows the extraordinary social pressure placed on people to conform to social expectations if they are to get ahead in life\, but he simultaneously demonstrates the enormous creativity through which they find ways to ‘game the system’ and break the rules. This round-table discussion will explore this curious dynamic of conformism and unconventionality\, of obedience and rule-bending\, of socialization and sabotage\, and will consider how far Havel’s mid-20th-century example of formalized bureaucratic communication (and the implicit parallel to authoritarian power structures) holds for early 21st-century culture and in particular for the ways social media have changed the way we interact for better and for ill. \nDiscussants: \nTim Beasley-Murray is Associate Professor of European thought and Culture at UCL and works on literature\, politics and ideas in English\, French\, German and sometimes Czech and Slovak. He has written a book on games (and how they can be serious) that will come out later this year. \nBarbara Day arrived as a student in Prague in 1965\, just in time to see the original productions of Havel’s plays and to experience the great surge of theatre activity. She maintained her connections with Czechoslovakia through the years of the Soviet occupation and consequent ‘Normalisation’. In 1985 she created the Bristol Czech Fest and the same year began to work with the ‘underground university’\, through the Oxford-based Jan Hus Educational Foundation. In 1999 she published The Velvet Philosophers and in 2019 Trial by Theatre: Reports on the Czech Drama. \nErin Plunkett is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University of Hertfordshire. She is co-editor with Ivan Chvatík of the Selected Writings of Jan Patočka: Care for the Soul (Bloomsbury\, 2022)\, and author of A Philosophy of the Essay: Scepticism\, Experience and Style (Bloomsbury\, 2020). \nDavid S. Danaher is a Professor of and Program Head for Slavic Studies in the Department of German\, Nordic\, and Slavic at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His two most recent books are Reading Václav Havel (University of Toronto Press\, 2015) and\, co-edited with Kieran Williams\, Václav Havel’s Meanings: His Key Words\, Their Context and Legacy (Karolinum Press and University of Chicago Press\, forthcoming 2023). He has taught a monograph course on Havel’s writing to undergraduates from all disciplines since 2002. \nModerator: \nPeter Zusi\, Associate Professor of Czech and Comparative Literature\, UCL. \nThe roundtable discussion will be followed by a wine reception. \nThe 2023 Václav Havel European Dialogues are supported by the Sekyra Foundation and are an initiative of the Václav Havel Library. \n  \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/vaclav-havel-european-dialogues-2023-tickets-719670131737?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: Putin's Witnesses
DESCRIPTION:With Putin becoming one of the world’s most powerful leaders\, and the man responsible for the Ukrainian war\, Vitaly Mansky’s fly-on-the-wall documentary provides a vital witness account of Putin’s rise to power throwing considerable light on his personality and ideas. \n\n\n\nUkrainian-born Vitaly Mansky gained unprecedented access to Putin and his inner circle in the Kremlin in 1999 – 2000 when filming a documentary that would boost Putin’s electoral success for Russian TV. Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and war in the Donbas region\, Mansky revisited that footage to trace Putin’s motivations and thirst for power. In his rare\, up-close portrait of Putin\, featuring\, amongst others\, a heartwarming meeting with his teacher\, we get early glimpses of Putin’s casual ruthlessness\, emphasis on Soviet-style nationalism\, reluctance to account for political decisions\, and behind-the-scenes revelations. Mansky’s act of bearing witness allows us a better understanding of the machinations that enabled Putin to consolidate power in this pivotal period while questioning his role in Putin´s bid for power. A genuinely chilling time capsule with a strong relevance today. \n\n\n\nVitaly Mansky\, Latvia\, Switzerland\, Czech Republic 2018\, 102 mins\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nAdmission: £5 \n\n\n\nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:It’s the 1960s and from the counterculture to Woodstock\, the world is changing. But not in conservative Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. Bette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\n“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true story about two extraordinary women.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Facebook event: https://fb.me/e/3FsOkrrnh\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Gallery\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery was founded in London\, UK\, in 2017 by Raghad Mardini to represent and promote emerging Syrian contemporary artists\, create a hub for Syrian artists in the UK\, and encourage new forms of cultural exchange between Syrian and British artists.\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery evolved from the Art Residence Aley (ARA)\, an NGO founded by Mardini in 2012 in Mount Lebanon\, a suburb of Beirut. SUMMARY:MUCK for London premiere - Play
DESCRIPTION:A play for today with a style that’s pure class as brother and sister confront their past to secure their future \n  \nAgainst the backdrop of a tough London estate\, as a drug-dealing former lover prowls and the debt collector is at the door\, two siblings come together to clear their cantankerous nan’s council flat following her death. Tensions mount\, and old wounds that haven’t quite healed open\, yet the brother and sister’s obvious affection for each other offers hope for the future. \n  \nSet in 2011\, just as gentrification begins to affect long term residents of the White City Estate\, Shepherd’s Bush\, MUCK pulls no punches in its exploration of loss\, love\, redemption\, loyalty\, suppression\, poverty\, graft and ultimate survival. The pull of family takes George and Kelly to the last place on earth they want to be\, yet the only place where they can find solutions. \n  \nWritten and performed by Joseph Connolly and Gabriella Padula\, MUCK is their first production as FenCity Players. \n  \nGabriella said ‘We met at university and discovered a mutual admiration for gritty working-class drama\, so decided to write our own. So\, with MUCK\, we set out to create a play relevant to people\, something that understands their real lives and is chosen to perform the London premiére at Come What May Festival is perfect’. \n  \nJoseph added ‘The siblings have to cope with their concerns and mixed emotions as they deal with the loss of their nan and issues around the tenancy of the flat\, which has also been Kelly’s home – something that will resonate with many in London!’ \n  \nAt a January preview at Norwich Arts Centre\, Julian Swainson of Norwich Eye said\, ‘The performers and writers have created a powerful and moving play that is relevant and personal. It draws you into a complex family relationship that many of us will find familiar with…MUCK is pure class!’ \n  \nMUCK is the creation of FenCity Players\, a new London/East of England theatre company committed to making socially significant work. \n  \nListings info: \nMUCK by FenCity Players \nCome What May Festival\, Park Theatre\, Clifton Terrace\, Finsbury Park\, London N4 3JP \n12 May 2022 2.30pm; 13 May 7pm; 14 May 2.30pm and 8.30pm (60 mins) \n£10\, £15 Discounts are available when booking multiple Come What May Festival shows \n020 7870 6876 https://parktheatre.co.uk/whats-on/muck

SUMMARY:Launch of Black Cultural Activism Map
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Black Cultural Activism Map\, the first of a two-part series of events celebrating and connecting visions\, stories\, lessons and legacies of Black and Brown cultural resistance in the UK. \nThe Stuart Hall Foundation has commissioned young artists\, activists\, designers and researchers to explore moments of cultural resistance in the UK through individuals\, organisations and political interventions. \nThis launch event will bring together three of the commissioned arts collectives Skin Deep\, Voices that Shake! and RECLAIM for a dynamic afternoon of performances\, film screenings\, artistic presentations\, panel discussions\, singing for justice and more. \nTickets \n£10 Full price / £6 Concessions \nWe have limited number of free access tickets available\, get in touch with us to find out more. \n*We call this the Black Cultural Activism Map to honour the legacies of political blackness from which we have grown. We wish to be inclusive of black\, brown and diasporic peoples. We recognise that our work is part of an ongoing conversation. \nBlack Cultural Activism Map has been supported with funding from Arts Council England and Unbound Philanthropy. This event is supported by Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London. \nArtists and contributors \nSkin Deep is a London-based multimedia platform that amplifies voices of colour through the discussion of race and culture\, inspiring much needed conversations around themes that are usually misrepresented or depoliticised by the mainstream media. Skin Deep’s multimedia project is based around a print publication\, live events and interactive digital exhibition that responds to the theme: MOVEMENT(S). Through original nonfiction\, fiction\, poetry\, artwork and illustration Skin Deep have invited their contributors to think about\, through and around the political journeys of black and brown activists. \nVoices that Shake! is a collective that brings together young people\, artists and campaigners to develop creative responses to social injustice. Using a model of personal transformation and structural change\, Shake! challenges established imbalanced power-bases and re-imagine new infrastructures in opposition to capitalism and colonialism. Shake! will deliver a multimedia performance showcase (musical oral history\, storytelling\, spoken word\, film\, soundscapes and visual collage) collaboratively devised between four artist facilitators from SHAKE!. Featured artists include Sai Murray\, Dhelia Snoussi\, Globe Poets and Nawi Collective. \nRECLAIM is a youth leadership and social change organisation. It was set up in Manchester in 2007 to identify and support young leaders from an intensely pressurised community. Their work allows young people to develop their skills and potential and to build their pathway to make the world a better place for all. Through their commission RECLAIM will unveil the hidden cultures in Manchester merging art\, politics and creativity and look at how linking these mediums can say so much about the world we live in today. They will revisit\, reimagine and revive stories of black and brown activism from the past – stories from the north that have shaped the lives of many in Manchester communities today.

SUMMARY:The Burden of Hate: Bridging the divide in unforgiving times
DESCRIPTION:The Forgiveness Project’s eighth Annual Lecture! \nOn the evening of Thursday\, 13 September at the beautiful Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill\, we will be holding our eighth Annual Lecture. \nWe are delighted to welcome the American author\, commentator and community organiser Sally Kohn to the UK. As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN\, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences and learning how to talk respectfully with people whose views she disagrees with passionately. \nSally Kohn will be exploring the epidemic of hate all around us – from internet trolls to school bullies\, from racist chants to homophobia – and what we can do to repair our humanity. \nSally’s recent book\, The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity\, investigates the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She talked with people from all around the world\, including many of The Forgiveness Project’s storytellers – Bassam Aramin\, Pardeep Kaleka\, Tony McAleer and Arno Michaelis – drawing surprising lessons from people who left hate behind. \nIn confronting her own shameful moments\, whether as a child bullying a classmate\, or today when she harbours deep partisan resentment\, Sally discovered\, ‘The opposite of hate is the beautiful and powerful reality of how we are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings. The opposite of hate is connection.’ \nTickets: £22 (£12 concessions – low income)\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 35 Powis Square\, W11 2AY\nTransport: Nearest underground stations: Notting Hill Gate or Westbourne Park \nThe Forgiveness Project is an award-winning charity working with real stories to explore how forgiveness\, empathy and sharing stories can be used to break cycles of harm\, transform relationships and restore hope.
