SUMMARY:Launch of Black Cultural Activism Map
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the launch of Black Cultural Activism Map\, the first of a two-part series of events celebrating and connecting visions\, stories\, lessons and legacies of Black and Brown cultural resistance in the UK. \nThe Stuart Hall Foundation has commissioned young artists\, activists\, designers and researchers to explore moments of cultural resistance in the UK through individuals\, organisations and political interventions. \nThis launch event will bring together three of the commissioned arts collectives Skin Deep\, Voices that Shake! and RECLAIM for a dynamic afternoon of performances\, film screenings\, artistic presentations\, panel discussions\, singing for justice and more. \nTickets \n£10 Full price / £6 Concessions \nWe have limited number of free access tickets available\, get in touch with us to find out more. \n*We call this the Black Cultural Activism Map to honour the legacies of political blackness from which we have grown. We wish to be inclusive of black\, brown and diasporic peoples. We recognise that our work is part of an ongoing conversation. \nBlack Cultural Activism Map has been supported with funding from Arts Council England and Unbound Philanthropy. This event is supported by Central Saint Martins\, University of the Arts London. \nArtists and contributors \nSkin Deep is a London-based multimedia platform that amplifies voices of colour through the discussion of race and culture\, inspiring much needed conversations around themes that are usually misrepresented or depoliticised by the mainstream media. Skin Deep’s multimedia project is based around a print publication\, live events and interactive digital exhibition that responds to the theme: MOVEMENT(S). Through original nonfiction\, fiction\, poetry\, artwork and illustration Skin Deep have invited their contributors to think about\, through and around the political journeys of black and brown activists. \nVoices that Shake! is a collective that brings together young people\, artists and campaigners to develop creative responses to social injustice. Using a model of personal transformation and structural change\, Shake! challenges established imbalanced power-bases and re-imagine new infrastructures in opposition to capitalism and colonialism. Shake! will deliver a multimedia performance showcase (musical oral history\, storytelling\, spoken word\, film\, soundscapes and visual collage) collaboratively devised between four artist facilitators from SHAKE!. Featured artists include Sai Murray\, Dhelia Snoussi\, Globe Poets and Nawi Collective. \nRECLAIM is a youth leadership and social change organisation. It was set up in Manchester in 2007 to identify and support young leaders from an intensely pressurised community. Their work allows young people to develop their skills and potential and to build their pathway to make the world a better place for all. Through their commission RECLAIM will unveil the hidden cultures in Manchester merging art\, politics and creativity and look at how linking these mediums can say so much about the world we live in today. They will revisit\, reimagine and revive stories of black and brown activism from the past – stories from the north that have shaped the lives of many in Manchester communities today.

SUMMARY:Marcel & Rami Khalifé
DESCRIPTION:Revered oud player Marcel Khalifé reinvents his much-loved music with his son Rami and French jazz drummer Aymeric Westrich. \nThis is Khalifé as you’ve never seen him – stripped back from the large ensemble he usually performs with. Played on just oud\, piano and drums\, we hear his songs in a new way\, as the heart of their melody and meaning are revealed anew. Inspired by contemporary poetry\, Khalifé’s songs promote traditional Arabic music\, bringing it into new contexts and continually finding a fresh relevance. \nAn exciting young composer\, having followed his father into music\, Rami Khalifé has performed internationally and been commissioned by a variety of ensembles. Sharing an experimental outlook\, he has collaborated with Aymeric Westrich on his brother\, Bachar Mar-Khalifé’s album Oil Slick\, mixing traditional Arabic sounds with jazz and electronics.

In this movement\, Charles goes to Claxton Bay to record the legendary group Claxton Bay Tamboo Bamboo. The footage was recorded for Charles to work with during his composition process. The film was constructed to showcase the inspirations and research behind the musical creation. \nJAB MOLASSIE was conceptualized and composed by Etienne Charles as part of his latest album\, ‘Carnival: The Sound of a People’. The film shows Charles as he is exposed to the sights\, sounds\, and movements of Jab Molassie in Paramin and Port of Spain\, highlighting the myriad influences that inspired this composition. Initially\, the footage was only used by the composer to inspire sounds. The idea for the film came after the music had been composed and recorded to increase awareness and impact. \nCelebrating 70th Anniversary of Skolt Sámi move to Inari area\, Finland \nBIRDS OF THE EARTH\nDir. DESCRIPTION:Molly’s on the toilet\, and she’s written about it. Share in her scatalogical agonies\, wallow in her bodily woes\, and discover her darkest secret: her Google search history. \nThis Poo Shall Pass is a funny and grotesque one-woman show about the role of the body in public and private storytelling. Featuring witty spoken word poems interlaced with snippets from Molly’s archive of strange Google searches\, this brand new show explores the oddness of bodies through the lens of Molly’s identity as a transgender woman\, testing the boundaries of public and private in surprising\, and sometimes uncomfortable ways. And for half of it\, Molly is sitting on the loo. \nJoin us for an evening of poetry that picks at the bits your Mum told you not to pick at\, gets up close and personal with the stuff underneath your fingernails\, and asks all questions you’ve ever been tempted to\, without resorting to incognito mode.

SUMMARY:Benin City\, Burning
DESCRIPTION:In February 1897\, British troops launched a ‘Punitive Expedition’ on the Kingdom of Benin\, swiftly and violently destroying much of Benin City and pillaging thousands of royal artworks and sacred objects. Many of the Benin Bronzes are now in the British Museum; the rest are scattered across Europe and America in private collections and museums. The Edo people have requested these artefacts back but most of the museums have staunchly refused. \nPoet Inua Ellams\, who hails from Benin City in Nigeria\, will read his poem sequence Fuck/Empire\, about one such artefact\, a tusk\, now housed at the Manchester Museum. He will then be joined by Nigerian artist Victor Ehikhamenor\, Pitt Rivers Museum Curator and author of The Brutish Museums Dan Hicks and Manchester Museum Director Esme Ward in conversation with writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch to discuss the history\, the legacy and the thorny issue of restitution. \nIn partnership with Penned in the Margins. \n— \nVictor Ehikhamenor is an artist\, photographer\, and writer born in Edo State\, Nigeria\, whose politically motivated works are influenced by the duality of African traditional religion and the interception of Western beliefs\, memories and nostalgia. He has had numerous solo art exhibitions across the world and is a Trustee of the proposed Edo Museum of West African Art. \nInua Ellams is a Nigerian-born\, UK-based poet\, playwright and performer who has written for the Royal Shakespeare Company\, the National Theatre and the BBC. His latest play was an adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters set in Nigeria\, staged at the National Theatre. The Actual his fifth poetry release\, and first full collection was published in 2020 by Penned in the Margins. \nDan Hicks is Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford and Curator at the Pitt Rivers Museum. His award-winning research focuses on the restitution of African cultural heritage from Euro-American collections\, focusing on the place of ideas of cultural whiteness in ongoing histories of colonial violence. His most recent book is The Brutish Museums. \nAfua Hirsch is a writer\, broadcaster and former barrister. She is a columnist for The Guardian\, writes for magazines including VOGUE\, Time and National Geographic and her book Brit(ish): On Race\, Identity and Belonging was a Sunday Times bestseller. SUMMARY:Singing With Nightingales: Dawn Chorus
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Dawn Chorus Day with this long-form live broadcast of birdsong and spoken word. \nJoin The Nest Collective online from 11pm on 1st May for a spoken-word journey\, hosted by Sam Lee\, through some of the finest poems and writings celebrating the nightingale\, the wonder of birds and the natural world. \nThis long-form broadcast will then drift into pure nightingale song through the night and\, as the birds rise\, will culminate in the dawn chorus itself\, finishing at 6am on Sunday 2nd May. \nThis live broadcast will be available for free on Youtube. \nWe are delighted to announce the contributors for this broadcast include: \nCaitlin Moran • Stewart Lee • Satish Kumar • John Lewis-Stempel • Jackie Morris • Rob Da Bank • Anita Sethi • Melissa Harrison • Mark Avery • Merlin Sheldrake • David Lindo • David Rothenberg • Mya-Rose Craig • Patrick Barkham • Farhana Yamin • Mary Colwell • Genevieve Tudor • Jay Griffiths \nInternational Dawn Chorus Day is the worldwide celebration of nature’s greatest symphony. All across the world people rise early to enjoy the sound of birdsong\, ‘from rattling wrens in Rotherham to crooning cowbirds in the Caribbean’. \nEach year\, for a short period mid-April\, a few thousand nightingales fly to southern UK from Africa. They can be heard in just a small number of special locations\, taking up songful residence after dusk. The territorial males serenade loyally each night for no more than six weeks among the blackthorn and forest margins\, giving unbelievable privilege to those who know where to go. \nIn this modern age\, with biodiversity in decline and habitats being eroded\, the nightingale has become representative of all that we have to lose. It is a small\, brown\, unremarkable-looking bird\, but it possesses one of nature’s finest singing voices. The bird winters in Africa but spends April to July mating and nesting in Europe and the Middle East. The numbers visiting England have declined so sharply that it is now on the UK’s Red List of species at the greatest conservation risk.

SUMMARY:ORIGINS 2021-22 Festival Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we open the 2021-22 ORIGINS Festival with an online welcoming event\, including a performance of the short play KATHARSIS by Yvette Nolan (Algonquin\, Canada) – a digital love letter to a theatre left empty by the pandemic. \nThe 2021-22 Festival will offer an unprecedented and evolving year-long programme\, transforming digital and physical spaces into vibrant sites of creative enquiry and performance by leading Indigenous artists and thinkers. Informed by a decade of Festival activity\, ORIGINS 2021-22 arrives at a crucial moment for the planet. Covid-19 has clearly demonstrated the fragility of our way of life. Climate change\, which shares many of Covid’s causes\, poses an existential threat. #BlackLivesMatter has exposed the fundamental injustices that underpin the histories from which the globally dominant culture grew. These challenges are not only political and scientific\, but fundamentally cultural\, forming the three key themes that will lead the Festival’s journey of enquiry through the year ahead: \nCovid\nClimate Change\nColonialism \nFrom May 20\, we present a series of online literature events\, including the US Poet Laureate Joy Harjo (Mvskoke)\, novelist Stephen Graham Jones (Blackfeet\, US)\, poets Natalie Diaz (Mojave\, US)\, Liz Howard (Anishinaabe\, Canada) & Matthew James Weigel (Dënësųłinë́ & Métis\, Canada) & environmental writers Kyle Whyte (Potawatomi\, US) & Jay Griffiths (UK).\nAs the Festival evolves\, we will be moving to performance-based interventions in public spaces\, drawing powerful links between Indigenous experience\, local heritage and sustainability\, asking urgent questions while respecting the time and space needed to stop and contemplate the answers. \nWe hope you will join us to experience another way of living. \nExplore the current programme\, with more to be announced throughout the year. \nSupported by Beyond the Spectacle and the High Commission of Canada in the UK.

SUMMARY:Luke Wright: The Ballad Seller - Poetry Show
DESCRIPTION:Luke Wright\, winner of Best Spoken Word Performer at May’s 2021 Saboteur Awards\, has based his 11th full-length poetry show on bawdy Georgian street ballads and takes it to London’s Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 14 July as part of an extensive UK tour. The show will also celebrate the limited edition book of the same name\, which features illustrations by The Guardian’s chief political cartoonist Martin Rowson. \nBack in Georgian times\, we got all our news from poetry. Before newspapers\, broadcasts or the internet\, ballad sellers would hawk broadside ballads on street corners for a penny. Scandalous affairs\, grisly crimes\, and colourful characters were brought to life in rhyming verse long before the first tabloid was printed. \nWright\, hailed by The Independent as ‘One of the funniest and most brilliant poets of his generation\, has rewritten the very best of these stories for the modern ear. So take a trip through Drury Lane gin shops with the Boxing Baroness; filch oysters by the dozen with celebrated gormandizer (glutton) Dando\, and escape the Bull Ring with Jemmy the Rockman. Expect scandal\, excess\, and beautiful\, flawed humanity. \nLuke says: ‘These days\, we associate the word ‘ballad’ with a kind of slow\, syrupy song\, but traditionally it meant a narrative poem or song. For hundreds of years\, ballads were the backbone of the average Briton’s cultural experience. By the 18th century\, the most gossipy\, salacious news stories were written as ballads and sold in their thousands. Frankly\, the quality of the verse was pretty awful\, but the characters brilliant. In this show\, I’ve brought those characters to life by extending the ballads and giving their stories space to breathe.’ \nLuke Wright is one of Britain’s top stand-up poets. Flamboyant\, political and riotously funny\, Wright’s inventive shows are enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide every year. Praised by Patti Smith for his ‘cool poems’\, he is the author of three full collections\, three poetry pamphlets\, and three verse plays. He has won a Fringe First\, a Stage Award for Acting Excellence\, and three Saboteur Awards. The Guardian said\, ‘His performances rumble with rage\, passion and humour\, peppered with brilliantly smart observation’. \nHe is a regular tour support for John Cooper Clarke and MC for The Libertines (frontman Carl Barât is a big fan\, describing him as ‘One of the greats. A poetic pugilist was recently dubbed ‘the bard of lockdown’ by The Daily Telegraph after his marathon stint of 100 consecutive nights of online shows. \nThe Ballad Seller will tour throughout 2021. Luke is also touring his third verse play The Remains of Logan Dankworth and his newest collection\, Come! Come on! SUMMARY:Live Theatre in London - The Sunday Art Club: Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Live Theatre in London – The Sunday Art Club: Sessions – Funk\, Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned Jazz Musicians.\n \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions launches at Arboretum in London’s West End\, offering an evening of intimate performance that provides a platform for multidisciplinary artists. The September Sessions offers Caribbean cuisine\, live theatre\, Funk & Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned jazz musicians Tony Kofi and The Organisation. \nHeadliners Tony Kofi and The Organisation are a Hammond/guitar/drums/baritone saxophone quartet playing a combination of high energy modern jazz\, Latin blues and funk\, including many rarely played classics by George Russell\, Woody Shaw\, Duke Pearson\, Pepper Adams\, George Benson and others. Regulars on the jazz circuit have performed throughout London and the UK\, including at the Southbank Centre as part of the Pull Out the Stops festival of organ music. \nCelebrating The Sunday Art Club’s Season of Love\, director James Scotland-Barnes (Assistant Director\, She Ventures and He Wins\, Young Vic) presents a pivotal scene from Cyrano de Bergerac that explores not only the wonders of poetry but the importance of men learning how to love and lose themselves in the art of romance. Cyrano’s insecurity is one of citizenship and his Jamaican tongue in a world of wealth\, wit\, and words. Jamaican performer Akil Young will play the titular role with Afia Abusham (Nevergreen\, Arcola Theatre) as Roxane. Christian will be performed by Tom Swale\, who is currently busy creating a theatre school in his homeland of Papua New Guinea. \nThe evening will also feature Funk & Hip Hop beats by DJ Darsi alongside a display of atmospheric landscapes by visual artist Miriam Jane Camancho. Known primarily as a digital artist\, during the last year\, Camancho has worked to develop her creativity in physical art; running away from the endless possibilities that pixels provide\, she has let the imperfections of the brush and the texture of the paint texture expand her spontaneity and freedom. Plus\, there will be poetry readings from Yasmin Beck\, Charlotte Gosling and Marina Stoimenova. \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions are organised by Khaos\, a London-based\, internationally-minded theatre company\, with a mission to create theatre that is accessible to all. Khaos use the arts to galvanise communities to take social action. They see theatre as a movement\, a truth and a study of our existence. \nJames Scotland-Barnes comments\, “I’m very excited to get The Sunday Art Club open again and present a series of eclectic performances unique to our platform. Our September to December season starts strong with jazz great Tony Kofi. It builds on the marvellous work of newcomer Akil Young(Actor)\, who led the Guerrilla Shakespeare production of ‘Coriolanus’! Emerging from a tough 18 months\, I really hope that our ‘Season of Love’ re-engages our audiences old and new\, and with a host of new poets and actors\, we’ll be celebrating love in all its wonderful and complicated forms.” \nFollowing a successful debut in July 2020\, this unique series of not-for-profit events is a vehicle for the arts industry to reconnect at a grassroots level. It looks to build a network of multi-disciplinary artists and audiences from diverse backgrounds. \nKhaos\, formerly known as Outer Gaea Company\, is a 2021/22 New Vic Kiln Associate Company. \nLive Theatre in London

Michelle takes commissions & is on-site to discuss your requirements.\nArts Council England’s Lottery Fund funds this exhibition. \nMichelle is a contemporary\, multidisciplinary fine art inspired by punk DIY and squatting. Due to severe dyslexia\, she started making art as a child and excelled in art. She is an alumnus of The Slade School of Fine Art\, University College London\, and University of the Arts. In 2021\, Michelle received an award from Arts Council England Lottery Fund to produce “The Walkie Talkies\,” digital art pieces on display at the London Transport Museum.

SUMMARY:Indie Bookshop Phlox Celebrates International Women's Day in Connaught Village
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate IWD\, Connaught Village invites indie bookshop Phlox Books to pop up over March with women-focused books and female author events featuring the likes of Abi Daré and Mona Arshi to showcase the female experience in literary form. \nFounder of East London independent bookshop Phlox Books\, Aimée Madill has proudly been serving ‘Books. Booze. Coffee’ since 2017 and is no stranger to pop-up bookstores in her role as ‘go-to’ for festival bookshops. On this occasion\, Aimée has taken the opportunity IWD has presented to platform female authors and host a series of events in Connaught Village. Located at 12 Connaught Street\, the pop-up will operate as a bookshop and events space where notable authors will discuss their work. \nAt street view\, the front of the bookstore will feature hand-painted illustrations by female illustrator Alezeia Fidalgo who has a penchant for books and creating original illustrations to accompany the text. \nThe first event at Phlox Connaught Village will take place on the day itself\, Tuesday 8th March\, with award-winning author\, Abi Daré\, whose debut novel ‘The Girl With the Louding Voice’ was published in 2020\, longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize and chosen as a BBC Radio 4 Book at Bedtime. Abi will be joined by Mona Arshi\, a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 and poet whose debut collection of poems received the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and appeared in the Poems on the Underground series. Arshi will be talking about her debut novel\, ‘Somebody Loves You’ (published 2021). Events will continue throughout March with a selection of authors handpicked by Aimée. Each event will see a discussion between the authors and an open forum for the audience to explore different themes of the female experience. \nEach event promises guests a deep dive into each woman’s creative process and an excellent chance to explore their views on IWD\, the female gaze\, and their respective literary futures. Wine will be served\, provided by Connaught Cellars\, in line with Phlox Book’s mantra of making bookshops relaxed\, social spaces. \nTickets for the event are free\, but registration is necessary\, although some spaces will be reserved for walk-ins. Visit the Connaught Village website events page to register your place here: https://www.connaught-village.co.uk/events/

SUMMARY:The Poetry Brothel: Everything Daylight Cannot Bear
DESCRIPTION:You stand in a dark room\, swirling the ice in an empty glass\, wondering if the frosty feeling in your heart will ever thaw. After months of isolation\, you have returned to the world but still\, find yourself withdrawing. A shadowy silhouette shrouded in purple light approaches you. \nTheir voice is soft and low; the velvet grace of the words\, the transcendent covenant\, is just a sketch of the things to come. Your pulse quickens\, and the breath catches on your lips. For a fee\, any of the creatures of the poetry brothel will bequeath you a poetic slice of their soul. \nThe Poetry Brothel is an international sensation that began in New York and has spread across the globe. The London chapter first opened its velvet curtains six years ago and returns with a tour de force of performers. The Poetry Brothel has rebellion in its heart\, where the strange\, the misfits\, the underdogs mingle together. All are welcomed regardless of creed and class. \nThe Poetry Brothel is an immersive and extraordinary show. Reclaiming poetry from dusty classrooms\, exam papers and ivory towers\, we aim to return to the origins of poetry performance\, the ancient rituals\, ceremonies\, and chants that uplift and revitalize our communities. Presenting a rotating cast of “poetry whores”\, each operating within a carefully constructed character\, catering for a wide variety of poetic appetites. For a lovely fee\, you can partake in an intimate one-on-one poetry performance\, where the intimacy of words is for you alone to savour.

SUMMARY:THE UN/POSSESSED
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to join the87press for the launch of five new books\, three collections of poetry\, one translated collection of poetry\, and a novel. \nFeaturing poets and writers: Fran Lock\, Gareth Farmer\, Danny Hayward\, Jessica Widner\, and Laura Doyle Péan (who will join us via a virtual reading)\, the event will be blended together with the warm Latinx sounds of Manuka Honey. \nThe five new titles launched on this evening of festivity will bring together topics such as struggles with mental health\, break-up love songs\, autism and woodwork\, Gypsy-Roma Traveller rights\, reflections on work during the Covid-19 Pandemic and post-pandemic recession\, alongside a novel in which a poet dies and haunts two protagonists\, a ballet dancer and a mortician. Expect sauciness\, sassiness\, and sincerity. Two of these titles are Poetry Book Society recommendations for Winter 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the last four years\, the87press’ bold and daring challenge to the failure of diversity and inclusion initiatives has been well received by a growing international grassroots readership. the87press focuses attention across spectrums of underrepresentation\, featuring regular work from racialised\, LGBTQ+\, Neurodiverse\, and working-class writers across genres\, forms\, and contexts. This event marks the beginning of the fifth year of operations against an increasingly hostile climate for the arts and humanities; your support for the growing partnership between Café Oto and the87press is much appreciated! \nFor more about the87press\, please visit www.the87press.co.uk \nThis event is brought to you in partnership with The Sonic Agent.

SUMMARY:Songs for Belarus
DESCRIPTION:A wonderful array of musicians and poets will perform at Highgate’s beautiful Lauderdale House on 9th July to raise funds to help families of political prisoners suffering under the brutal Belarusian regime. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor almost three years now\, the people of Belarus have suffered increasingly harsh repressive measures under dictator Lukashenko and for families of political prisoners life is very hard. To raise funds to aid these innocent victims\, leading Belarusian poet Hanna Komar is bringing together a terrific line-up of musicians and poets for an uplifting evening of music and poetry entitled ‘Songs for Belarus’. \n\n\n\n\n\n“I know what it means to be a political prisoner and how much difference supporting their families can make\,” says Hanna\, who was herself imprisoned after the protests\, then forced to flee to London. \n\n\n\n\n\nBesides music and poetry\, there’s an auction for lots including masterclasses in cocktail making to writing books from one of the world’s most published authors. \n\n\n\n\n\nArtists include: Rachel Sutton\, Anthony Cable (Aspects of Love)\, Alex Schmerechanska (Voice of Poland)\, Mazaika\, Dan March (Pramface\, Johnny English)\, Helen Schlesinger (Merlin\, Sensitive Skin\, RSC)\, Clare Summerskill\, Kristin Milward (Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant)\, Mark Coverdale
