SUMMARY:August Sander Photography Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:In the era of inter-war Germany\, an expressive August Sander’s photographs were banned by the Nazis. He had documented people living their daily lives during the war. People from all walks of life photographed\, and was banned. \nHis technique is very unique a kind of raw and cold. The interesting thing is why was is not allowed for public viewing? The Nazi’s believed that his artwork showed the ugliness and weakness of the state. The truth\, pure and simple is the tyranny that he hopes to convey through his pictures. \nCome and experience the secret that has been locked away for so long. \n \n

SUMMARY:Turbans and Tales Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning photography duo Amit and Naroop as they discuss the story of the turban with the launch of their new book\, ‘Turbans and Tales’. \nThe turban is worn by all three major faiths of the Indian subcontinent and has been a symbol of status and respect in the region for centuries. The British Army in India played a significant role in utilising the turban in military uniforms and ultimately informing styles currently worn today. British royalty and officers also donned the turban themselves over the years. \nThe colour\, shape and style can tell us a lot about the wearer. They vary from the blue towering turbans of the Akali Nihung warriors\, ornate layers worn by maharajas\, folded khaki turbans worn during both World Wars to more modern iterations. \nAmit and Naroop focus in on the Sikh turban and track its evolution. The book features contemporary portraits of British and American Sikhs from the duo’s recent exhibition\, in addition to archival photographs that chart the history of the turban. \nThere will be a book signing with the authors after the event. Refreshments will be provided. \nAdmission: Free – Book in advance https://www.nam.ac.uk/whats-on/turbans-and-tales \n

SUMMARY:Lost Narratives: A Hidden World of Urbex Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Atlas Obscura for a talk on urban exploration — Urbex — and what it takes to photograph abandoned buildings all over the world. \nUrban Exploration has always been a popular pastime to rule breakers and renegades\, but with the advent of social media\, especially Instagram\, there has been a new rise in its visibility. Once only available to those who were willing to risk the dangers of entering decaying structures\, modern technology has made it possible for photographers to share what’s inside ruins around the world with the world. Viewing this practice through the eyes of an expert will help us uncover more about the compulsion to go off the beaten track and share these discoveries. \nThe talk will be given by urban explorerer and photographer Claire Alaxandra Powell\, and she’ll discuss how keeping secrets within the urbex community helps preserve these structures for the future\, and the history behind the places she’s photographed all over Europe. Claire herself has been hunting for ruins for the past decade in England\, Germany\, Italy\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, the United States\, and more\, and will bring this wealth of experience and knowledge to share. \nOur event will be hosted in the Asylum Chapel\, an 1824 chapel whose interior was ruined by an incendiary device during World War II. The interior\, almost entirely destroyed from the explosion\, remains in much the same state today.

SUMMARY:“Postcards to you” Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Postcards to you” explores the power of art as a therapy. In this series the artist follows the thread of her own memories and absences by using an assemblage of found imagery depicting family life as a trigger to unlock her own childhood memories. Notably she couples these with text to give strangers personal connotations. Through impressing her own identity\, the artist is able to wistfully convey a feeling of anxiety and loss. The photographs have been buried inferring a lack of control over her personal outcomes\, the contact with soil suggesting the frailty of human life and memory\, reminding us of beginning and end\, death and life and the imminence of passing of time.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us via email or send us a direct message on social media. We hope to see you there!\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nThursday 23rd June\, 7 – 9pm // Private View – Velvet Society.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis features a solo viola performance of Syrian classical compositions by Raghad Haddad\, a refugee in the UK and a member of the London Syrian Ensemble.\n\n\n\n\n\n Pre-book for this free event: https://bit.ly/3zGZf7q\n Let your friends know you are attending and invite them! Facebook event: https://fb.me/e/1ESsDmT5Q\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 25th June\, 2 – 4pm // Workshop – Bird/Human.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis free workshop hosted by artist Heba Al-Akkad is aimed at children and young people. In acts of playful discovery\, we will take the bird and the human\, merging and mixing the two to obtain an inspired character. The imagination of the child will help create\, through the use of recycled materials (fabrics and threads)\, an artistic doll. The bird will symbolise freedom\, hope and migration. Bring an old photo that has meaning for you. All materials will be provided. All ages under 14 and parents welcomed to be present. Book through the website.\n\n\n\n\n\n Pre-book for this free event: https://bit.ly/3HuP1Ji\n Let your friends know you are attending and invite them! DESCRIPTION:With Reflections\, Olga Karlovac presents a visual journal of her inner world as a series of experimental self-portraits alongside timeless and nameless landscapes. \n\n\n\nKarlovac’s work occupies a space between figuration and abstraction\, shadow and light\, recollection and the here and now. Using her camera as a painterly tool to create an atmospheric and grainy aesthetic\, her intentionally blurred contemplations intuitively convey fluidity and emotion. Not intending to chronicle a specific circumstance or situation\, the artist evokes memories and moods that are at once intimate and universal. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition concludes a transition period that spanned six years and three books. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition runs from 12-18 June 2023\, open daily 12noon – 6 pm \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Wednesday 14 June\, 6-9 pm
