SUMMARY:DAZZLED
DESCRIPTION:In the shadow of the head-spinning Brexit uncertainty\, this month-long photography exhibition celebrates human values\, diversity and the power of friendship through ten unique portraits. Curated by Vanda Lengyel\, photographed by the Orbital Strangers Project. \nThey say birds of a feather flock together\, just as people who click tend to stick together. With this in mind\, perhaps the best way to introduce someone is through their portraits of close friends. This exhibition not only tells a story about Vanda but about London and the people the city has given her. When she first arrived\, London represented both the unknown and a brand new start. She has lived in many places and travelled all over the world. All of these cities enriched her life in their own way but were unable to offer everything her soul craved. \nLondon is a different case entirely. It is complex\, layered and vast in every sense and immediately puts a newcomer’s openness to the test. It probes your ability to dive into its interconnected layers and experience the hidden insights. It is the lens of the outsider that determines the extent to which they can let the experiences humble them and broaden their horizons. \n“I clearly recall a long walk during my first week in the city. I was heading from Dalston to Clapham on a sunny afternoon when I was suddenly hit by the vastness of London\, the extent of the unknown and the level of my isolation. The city seemed like a glossy bubble with coloured layers clinging together in front of my eyes in the sunshine. Dazzled\, I was determined to become an insider. I dived in…” \nAlthough London is not always an obvious beauty\, it readily gives up its secrets over time if approached with an open heart and mind. Over the past six years\, this melting pot has revealed itself to her through people and their life stories and has given her real friends. When she looks at them\, she sees the stories they shared and the journey that she took\, both physically and emotionally\, that led her to become a Londoner. \nAbout\nVanda Lengyel is a Hungarian project manager and creative producer. She moved to London six years ago. With great passion for people and cultures\, she spends her spare time working on personal projects including exhibitions and coaching for change. \nThe Orbital Strangers Project is a portrait and movie photographer team based in London and Budapest. Csaba Aknay and Gabor Kotschy are regularly commissioned to shoot for advertising and corporate clients\, magazines and movie productions. \nAlthough this is a ticketless event\, registration is essential on Eventbrite. \nPrivate view: 24 October 2019\, 6-9pm. \nVisitor info: open Mon to Fri 9am-5pm\, 25 October – 22 November 2019

SUMMARY:“Postcards to you” Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:“Postcards to you” explores the power of art as a therapy. In this series the artist follows the thread of her own memories and absences by using an assemblage of found imagery depicting family life as a trigger to unlock her own childhood memories. Notably she couples these with text to give strangers personal connotations. Through impressing her own identity\, the artist is able to wistfully convey a feeling of anxiety and loss. The photographs have been buried inferring a lack of control over her personal outcomes\, the contact with soil suggesting the frailty of human life and memory\, reminding us of beginning and end\, death and life and the imminence of passing of time.

SUMMARY:Escape by Olga Karlovac - Closing Event - Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Photo Exhibition\n \nHaving launched her current series of photo books at Willesden Gallery in 2018\, Olga Karlovac returns to London to present escape\, a solo exhibition accompanying her latest edition by the same name. \nThe artist takes us on a visual journey through the streets of her Croatian hometown. Rather than documenting famous sights or recognisable characters\, Olga Karlovac uses her camera to create lasting impressions of fleeting moments and emotions. \n \nThe exhibition was planned across borders and opened in the artist’s absence. We are delighted that Olga will travel to London and join us for a closing event on Friday\, 30 July. \nAll welcome\, no ticket required.

SUMMARY:Antonín Kratochvíl: Testimonies
DESCRIPTION:06 MAY 2021 – 30 SEP 2021\nCzech Centre’s Window Gallery & Czech Embassy London (outdoor exhibition\, free access)\nMore info: https://london.czechcentres.cz/en/program/antonin-kratochvil-testimonies \nAn outdoor exhibition of striking black and white photographs by four-time World Press Photo winner Antonin Kratochvil. With his unique style of photography marked by the depth of his understanding of his subjects Kratochvil\, one of the leading representatives of social documentary photography and photojournalism\, provides testimonies to the problems of modern society and civilization while portraying the state of the human soul and its prospects in today’s world. \nABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHER:\nAntonín Kratochvíl (b.1947) is a Czech photojournalist of international renown. After five years of exile in Europe (1967–1972)\, including life-changing experiences from his time in a refugee camp\, in prison\, and in the French Foreign Legion\, he studied art and photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and moved to the United States in 1972\, where he became one of the top photojournalists and war photographers. SUMMARY:David Gaberle: Looking for Prague
DESCRIPTION:Private view & artist talk: 16 November 2021\, 6 pm \nAn outdoor exhibition of the work of Czech street photographer and worldwide ambassador for FUJIFILM David Gaberle captures everyday Prague’s streets. Following his critically applauded Metropolight project in which he explored world cities from London to Tokyo\, Gaberle turned his camera on his native city of Prague. After covering more than 2000 km of streets and six months in making the result is a subjective\, almost intimate documentation of Prague offering an untraditional view of places away from the hustle and bustle of tourists. \nComprehensive artist statement by David Gaberle for his photographic exhibition:\n“Taking photographs while travelling is often an easy endeavour because everything seems new and exciting. However\, the novelty is seductive\, and we tend to exoticise what we see and perceive. As a result\, the photographs tend to say more about us as visitors than about the places we are trying to portray.\nWhen I returned to live in Prague\, I focused my camera on the cityscape outside of the city’s historical centre. I walked many of the same streets repeatedly in the hope that I would learn to find the seemingly mundane and ordinary to be interesting. After a few months\, I stopped wishing for extraordinary moments to happen in front of my lens\, and I started to notice the textures\, the subtle tones of colours and the rhythm of objects in the camera’s frame. I slowly began to see the city as a collage of shapes and colours. It felt like progress\, yet I still cannot shake off the feeling that I am not looking at Prague entirely my way.\nOften\, I think that everything the camera and the eye perceive is simply a reflection of light that bounces off the surface. The implication seems to be that we never really see things for what they are. Sometimes I feel like I can sense what that suggests\, but the consequences seem so harrowing that I have not yet found the courage to explore what it means.” \nDAVID GABERLE\n“David Gaberle underlines with light exactly that spot within the composition that he wants to draw attention to\, or lights up the colour that is the essence of the whole image. David presses the shutter often at the moment when the sun’s rays light the small area of the street or touch the façade of a house at the last moment. It is as if he takes pleasure from this nervy borderline moment when the well-lit streets turn just for an instant into a stage.” Tomáš Pospěch\, Curator \nPart of 25th Made in Prague Festival (7 November – 7 December 2021) \nFree\, registration on https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/david-gaberle-looking-for-prague-private-view-artist-talk-tickets-196392554417?aff=odeimcmailchimp&mc_cid=b90125e016&mc_eid=970f7c2a4f

SUMMARY:Nature Interrupted with Celina Teague
DESCRIPTION:Monstrous hybrid beings appear against acid skies and barren landscapes\, creating surreal\, otherworldly scenes that sit uncomfortably between nightmare and dream. Nature Interrupted\, Celina Teague’s fifth solo show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, takes a deep dive into the dark underbelly of our planet’s biosphere\, where human detritus overcome animals and plants. They appear futuristic\, unwholesome\, and alarming. Still\, at the same time\, Teague’s vibrant colour palette commands presence: we are challenged not only to look but to face up to the reality of what we see. \nIn part\, Teague’s artistic practice is an expression of her guilt and responsibility about not only environmental issues but also political and humanitarian crises. She listens to the news and various podcasts as she paints\, allowing the information to filter through onto the canvas so that each composition possesses a raw sense of urgency. ‘I paint instinctively. It always involves risk\, which I find both liberating and frightening. If I painted on a different day or even at a different hour\, the result would be completely different\,’ she says. \nThe work Still I Rise\, for example\, was made when Teague was listening to reports of the conflict in Afghanistan and specifically about the oppression of women. However\, instead of focusing on the bleakness of the situation\, Teague’s perspective is one of hope\, vitality and strength. In the painting\, women dressed in blue burqas appear like flowers blooming at the end of tall lush vines\, the winding\, interconnected stems suggesting a sense of quiet solidarity. Interestingly\, this is the only work in which humanity and nature appear in harmony: the women are supported by the natural world rather than overwhelming it. However\, this relationship becomes skewed in the painting Swallowed. Here\, the women appear huddled together to form the centre of what looks like a pink flower\, but closer inspection reveals that the petals are\, in fact\, severed tongues. In this way\, the work becomes a powerful visual metaphor for how censorship is used as a form of oppression and entrapment. \nAlthough the other works reflect more broadly on the climate crisis\, the notion of mutilation runs throughout the exhibition. In one of the more surreal compositions\, a giant straw pierces through the centre of a flamingo’s body\, which is itself\, assembled from pink\, fleshy human limbs and organs. A mass of breasts and udders replace its feathers while its foot is a claw-like human hand. The strange yellow glow of the sky suggests a sickness or toxicity\, and an egg lies fried on the cracked\, dry ground as if baked in the sun. Like all of Teague’s works\, the bright colour palette is somewhat misleading: we’re unsure whether to laugh or gasp. Is this a horror or a comedy? \nThis deliberate ambiguity creates a strong sense of unease that reflects both the subject matter and Teague’s approach to image-making. ‘My work is sometimes labelled as activist art\, which I find uncomfortable because painting about these issues doesn’t feel like enough\,’ she says. ‘We have all the facts easily accessible to us\, but we still just sit back and watch what’s happening most of the time.’ Teague returns to this notion of ‘armchair activism’ in each of her exhibitions by painting an image of an armchair\, often encompassing elements from the other works to create a sense of unity while also highlighting the irony of her role as an artist. However\, it would be amiss to ignore the power of the image. Teague’s paintings command our gaze and draw our attention to the politics of seeing. Confronted by these strange\, unsettling scenes\, we can deny neither awareness nor responsibility.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:Reflections
DESCRIPTION:With Reflections\, Olga Karlovac presents a visual journal of her inner world as a series of experimental self-portraits alongside timeless and nameless landscapes. \n\n\n\nKarlovac’s work occupies a space between figuration and abstraction\, shadow and light\, recollection and the here and now. Using her camera as a painterly tool to create an atmospheric and grainy aesthetic\, her intentionally blurred contemplations intuitively convey fluidity and emotion. Not intending to chronicle a specific circumstance or situation\, the artist evokes memories and moods that are at once intimate and universal. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition concludes a transition period that spanned six years and three books. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition runs from 12-18 June 2023\, open daily 12noon – 6 pm \n\n\n\nPrivate View: Wednesday 14 June\, 6-9 pm

DESCRIPTION:‘Sex\, Lies and Spies’ is a series of thought-provoking images from East End photographer Joe Leslie marking the 60th anniversary of Britain’s biggest political scandal of the 20th century – the Profumo Affair. \n\n\n\nFeaturing the main protagonists of the 1960s crisis – government minister John Profumo\, models Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies\, socialite Stephen Ward\, Russian spy Yevgeny Ivanov\, notorious slum landlord Peter Rachman\, jazz promoter Johnny Edgecombe and jazz singer Lucky Gordon – Leslie has reimaged the scandal through a unique captivating visual  journey\, with Keeler being the main subject. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition explores the entire affair\, from 1961 through to the resignation of Profumo in 1963 and Keeler’s court trial. \n\n\n\nThe artwork is part of Brick Lane Gallery’s Art in Mind exhibition.

SUMMARY:BEAUTY IN EVERY SMILE
DESCRIPTION:Smile Train UK – the world’s largest cleft charity – have released a series of unfiltered images celebrating the beauty and diversity in smiles\, to support their new nationwide campaign\, Beauty in Every Smile. \n\n\n\nCaptured by London-based photographer Fanny Beckman\, who is renowned for using art to raise awareness of social injustice and inequalities\, the images feature 12 cleft-affected people from across the UK\, who have come to love their smiles after facing stigma\, mistreatment and/or discrimination as a result of their facial difference. \n\n\n\nLaunched in time for World Smile Day® (6 October)\, the images are being showcased on giant 2-metre high panels in a public exhibition on London’s busy South Bank\, from 9am on Thursday 5 October to 4pm on Saturday 7 October. \n\n\n\nCommenting on the exhibition images\, Fanny Beckman\, says: “Beauty in Every Smile has truly been a dream project to work on. Smile Train UK’s work is very much in line with my ethos and what I want to achieve with my photography: to raise awareness of stories that historically have been untold. Art is a powerful tool to use to start conversations\, and I’ve been fortunate to meet many inspiring people during the photoshoots. I am grateful to all the models for sharing their experiences\, and for removing the stigma around being born with a cleft.”  \n\n\n\nA cleft is a facial difference that occurs when a baby’s lip and/or mouth do not fuse together during pregnancy. One in 700 people are born with a cleft in the UK each year – and every three minutes a baby is born with a cleft globally. \n\n\n\nSadly\, research recently carried out by Smile Train UK – in partnership with Censuswide – found that over a third (34%) of people living with a facial difference in the UK (including cleft) have been discriminated against or have heard negative comments said about them. Three in ten (30%) have also been bullied. As a result\, more than a quarter have felt self-conscious (29%)\, unhappy (28%)\, embarrassed (28%)\, unwanted (26%) – and even depressed (27%). \n\n\n\nAnd these feelings of self-consciousness don’t just impact people with a facial difference. According to Smile Train UK’s survey\, over half (53%) of the wider public are yet to fully love their smile. And sadly\, only 18% of the nation think their smile is beautiful. \n\n\n\nInterestingly\, approximately a quarter (24%) of the public surveyed said they would love their smile more if they were told it was beautiful. And for one in ten\, a greater understanding of differences and uniqueness in society would have a positive impact on the way they view their smile too. \n\n\n\nIn response to these findings\, Smile Train has launched the Beauty in Every Smile campaign\, to inspire more ‘smile inclusivity’ in the UK and to encourage people to see the beauty in their own unique smiles. \n\n\n\nSmile Train UK is championing smile inclusivity\, by encouraging more people to see the beauty in the smiles of others – as well as their own. Because there’s Beauty in Every Smile. Visit www.smiletrain.org.uk/beautyineverysmile to learn more.

Taking place at London’s Paddington Station (Platforms 8 & 9) from 3 – 30 July\, the South West Coast Path Photographer of the Year Exhibition offers visitors the chance to view all the winning images from this popular photography competition… and more.\n\nHighlighting the diversity\, beauty\, wildlife\, heritage and seasonality of the coastal environment\, both on and around the South West Coast Path – 630 miles of stunning coastline spanning four counties\, from Minehead to Poole – the exhibition will also include images that illustrate all too clearly the impact of climate change on and around England’s longest National Trail.\n\nOrganised by the South West Coast Path Association\, the South West Coast Path Photographer of the Year competition is now in its 12th year\, although this is the first time that a public exhibition has been held for it in the capital\, thanks to headline sponsors\, Great Western Railway (GWR) along with the support of Network Rail. Choosing an overall winner from the 1\,500 entries was a challenging task for the judges\, who awarded the coveted title to James Loveridge for his striking photograph entitled ‘An aerial view over Lyme Regis Cobb during Storm Ciaran’ (shown)\, which impressed the panel both with its beauty and its messages.\n\nVisitors to the South West Coast Path Photographer of the Year Exhibition at Paddington Station will be able to view James’ winning image\, as well as see beautiful photographs from the winners and runners-up in competition categories that include Urban Lines\, Climate Change\, Sky Shot and Young Photographer of the Year.\n\nThere will also be a free-to-enter competition at the stand to win a framed print of a photograph of your choice from the selection on display\, as well as plenty of information about visiting the South West Coast Path\, and the work of the South West Coast Path Association and its partners to protect and preserve this beautiful natural treasure for all. Visitors can also make an on-the-spot donation to the charity using QR codes displayed on each of the exhibition panels\, should they so wish.\n\nEVENT START & FINISH TIME: All-day event from 3rd July to 30th July inclusive.

SUMMARY:Michael Ormerod: Vanishing Point Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition ‘Michael Ormerod: Vanishing Point’ is the first exhibition on this unique photographer for almost 20 years. \nMichael Ormerod (1947-1991) was a British photographer with a distinctive and powerful voice. His career was tragically cut short on August 7th\, 1991\, in a road accident on his last field trip to the USA. \nHe is known for his striking and evocative images capturing American landscapes and urban scenes. His work often depicted the raw\, gritty reality of life in America\, showcasing its beauty and challenges. Ormerod’s photography gained recognition for its powerful storytelling and unique perspective on the American experience. \nHis legacy continues influencing contemporary photographers\, and his work remains highly regarded in the photography community. Despite this\, only one major exhibition of his work has taken place over the last 33 years\, in 2003. \nSince his untimely death in 1991\, Ormerod’s work has been held at the Millennium Picture Library in London. At a family event in 2012\, celebrating his life and photographic work\, his daughter Ali had a wonderful conversation with one of Ormerod’s closest friends\, fellow photographer Geoff Weston. \nThis conversation led to a shared intention: to return to the archive and revisit his photographic legacy. We have since discovered a trove of previously unseen negatives from Ormerod’s trips to America. Working closely with the help of Alan Thoburn\, over a decade\, we have cherished the opportunity to consider these previously unseen images and curate a new collection that deserves public display. \nThanks to the generous donations to a Kickstarter campaign\, we are able to present this body of Ormerod’s never-before-seen work to a wider audience. \nJoin us in appreciating his legacy. \nPlease note that for Sunday openings the gallery will close at 4pm instead of 6pm.

SUMMARY:Pixels and Poetics: Private View
DESCRIPTION:Pixels and Poetics: Sudek\, Funke and the Influence of New Technologies on the Development of Photography connects the world of interwar analogue photography with the visual aesthetics of today’s digital age. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to trace how the image has transformed over two centuries—from tangible traces of light to synthetic visual worlds created by artificial intelligence. \nThe exhibition presents iconic works by Josef Sudek and Jaromír Funke\, whose photographs demonstrate how light\, composition\, and atmosphere can transform reality into poetic or constructive visual worlds. These classical approaches are complemented by historical photomontages\, double exposures\, and analogue manipulations\, showing how deeply the desire to reshape the image is established in the tradition of photography. The historical works in the exhibition are drawn from the PPF Art collection\, which plays a key role in preserving and presenting Czech photographic heritage. \nThe contemporary section of the exhibition develops this dialogue through artists working with AI and generative technologies. In her work Your Addiction Is the Message\, Barbora Trnková reveals the mechanisms of visual dependency in the digital environment and the role of technologies in shaping our perceptions. Lenka Hamošová\, in the project Troubling GAN and the series Strange Attractions\, explores both the aesthetics and limitations of neural networks\, showing how algorithms create and reproduce stereotypes or visual hallucinations. A collaborative work by Trnková and Javůrek\, Generation of Princesses\, uses generative models to critically reflect on pop-culture ideals of femininity and their digital reconstruction. The exhibition offers a visually compelling and accessible perspective on how our understanding of the image\, reality\, and the things we are willing to believe when we look\, is changing. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre with the kind support of the PPF Foundation. \nEXHIBITION OPENING\nTuesday 20 January 2026\, 6.30 – 8.30 pm\nFree entry \nRegister Here

SUMMARY:International Women's Day: Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate International Women’s Day 2026\, the Royal Hospital Chelsea is delighted to partner with photographer Jackie King to display a collection of never-before-seen photographs showing some of the 19 female Chelsea Pensioners who currently call the Royal Hospital their home. \nWomen were first admitted to the Royal Hospital Chelsea as Chelsea Pensioners in 2009\, a full three hundred and seventeen years after the Hospital first opened its doors to Army veterans. Since 2009\, many women have chosen to become part of the Royal Hospital community\, donning their scarlet coats with pride. Yet today – seventeen years later – many people are still surprised when they meet a female Chelsea Pensioner. \nThrough her photos\, Jackie King highlights the character of some of the female Chelsea Pensioners currently resident with us. Showcasing the individualism of each sitter\, she shares their unique stories visually\, while representing how embedded in the Royal Hospital community female Pensioners are today.

SUMMARY:Roma Routes - Art\, Identity\, and Expression from Hungary - Free Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us on 8 April to mark International Roma Day for Roma Routes\, an evening of photography\, film\, and contemporary art exploring the journeys that shape Roma identity. Bringing together documentary work from a collaborative project in Tiszavasvári\, Hungary\, and artistic reflections by London-based Roma artist Robert Czibi\, the exhibition traces connections between place\, memory\, and belonging. Through images\, stories\, and personal perspectives\, Roma Routes invites audiences to reflect on how identity is shaped between the places we come from and the places we continue to become. \nThis exhibition brings together two intertwined narratives: the story of a segregated Roma community in Tiszavasvári\, and that of an artist born in another Roma neighbourhood in the same region who has carried its memory across borders. \nThe first story is that of collaboration: stepping across internal borders between the countryside and the Hungarian capital\, Budapest\, to involve participants from the Roma neighbourhood of a small town in the North-East of Hungary in a collaborative writing project with local non-Roma residents through the publication of the periodical Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together. \nThe second story is of the artist\, Robert Czibi who crossed internal borders of identity and the physical borders of countries on many occasions before finding his expressive voice in the multiplicity of London’s lingua-culture. The simultaneity of identity as rootedness in Roma origins and identity as motion and interaction with our surroundings is what unites the two narratives that unfold in the images exhibited together. \n\nThe Road Ahead\nDocumentary and Photography Projects from Hungary – Film and photography \nThis photo exhibition was created in collaboration between photojournalist Márton Kállai\, multiple-winner of the Hungarian Press Photo Competition\, and the Tiszavasvári Roma Girls’ Youth Club\, on the initiative of the KRE Linguistic Diversity and Social Participation research group at Károli Gáspár University in Budapest. Together\, Roma and non-Roma participants from Tiszavasvári and Budapest write and publish the journal Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together\, creating a narrative of trust and belonging about Roma futures and the coexistence of Roma and non-Roma in Hungary. The documentary film Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together: Stories of a collaborative journal in support of Roma social participation showcases stages from their journey together: how they forged a collaborative writing and research collective across the borders of identity that separate people living alongside each other. \n\n\nThere I Was Born\, Here I Become\nContemporary Art \nRobert Czibi’s artistic response unfolds as a parallel journey alongside the documentary and the photos. Although Robert’s works reflect his individual journey as a London-based Roma artist from Hungary\, his journey explores the potentialities that open up when collectives or individuals persistently criss-cross and interrogate physical and narrative borders of identity. Through his works\, he returns to the landscapes of his childhood not only to remember\, but to understand how identity is formed between the place of birth and the place of becoming. Through images\, he explores what it means to grow up in a Roma family\, to leave it behind\, and to continue carrying its imprint in his works. Together\, his artworks create a dialogue between here and there\, between collective memory and personal transformation. \n\n\nProgramme \n\n18:30 – Film screening (25 minutes)\n19:00 – Panel discussion – The Road Ahead – Documentary and Photography Projects from Hungary\n19:30 – There I Was Born\, Here I Become – Private view\n21:00 – End of Event\n\n\n\nWe warmly invite audiences to join us for an evening of photography\, film and contemporary art marking International Roma Day. Through documentary images\, collaborative storytelling and personal artistic reflection\, Roma Routes opens a space to engage with questions of identity\, belonging\, and the journeys that shape Roma lives across places and generations. \nThe exhibition offers an opportunity to encounter the voices and perspectives behind these projects and to reflect on how communities and individuals navigate the paths between heritage\, memory and new beginnings. \nRegistration is open via Eventbrite. \nThe event is supported by the National Research\, Development and Innovation Office – Hungary and organised by the Liszt Institute London
