SUMMARY:The Burden of Hate: Bridging the divide in unforgiving times
DESCRIPTION:The Forgiveness Project’s eighth Annual Lecture! \nOn the evening of Thursday\, 13 September at the beautiful Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill\, we will be holding our eighth Annual Lecture. \nWe are delighted to welcome the American author\, commentator and community organiser Sally Kohn to the UK. As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN\, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences and learning how to talk respectfully with people whose views she disagrees with passionately. \nSally Kohn will be exploring the epidemic of hate all around us – from internet trolls to school bullies\, from racist chants to homophobia – and what we can do to repair our humanity. \nSally’s recent book\, The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity\, investigates the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She talked with people from all around the world\, including many of The Forgiveness Project’s storytellers – Bassam Aramin\, Pardeep Kaleka\, Tony McAleer and Arno Michaelis – drawing surprising lessons from people who left hate behind. \nIn confronting her own shameful moments\, whether as a child bullying a classmate\, or today when she harbours deep partisan resentment\, Sally discovered\, ‘The opposite of hate is the beautiful and powerful reality of how we are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings. The opposite of hate is connection.’ \nTickets: £22 (£12 concessions – low income)\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 35 Powis Square\, W11 2AY\nTransport: Nearest underground stations: Notting Hill Gate or Westbourne Park \nThe Forgiveness Project is an award-winning charity working with real stories to explore how forgiveness\, empathy and sharing stories can be used to break cycles of harm\, transform relationships and restore hope.

SUMMARY:Pass the Porn : A Cinematic Social Experiment
DESCRIPTION:The Violet & Is Our Love ___? present : Pass The Porn \nAn elevated and sophisticated version of that sleepover where one of your friends decided to search for porn and show the group. A cross between cinema and smut. Pillows\, cuddle puddles\, blankets and popcorn. And porn. Lots of porn. \nWith censorship at an all time high (RIP Tumblr)\, spaces to safely celebrate our sexuality are dwindling. The world lives between extremes. Porn stashes (not to be confused with Porn ‘staches) and Porn detoxes. Either we hide our habits to never speak of them or abstain from porn and proceed to never shut up about it. The reality is: Porn isn’t evil. It depends on how we use it. Let’s use it for good. Let’s talk about it\, learn from it\, incorporate it. Let’s create a conversation around pornography and use it as a platform to unpack cultural nuances and norms. Each Pass the Porn film series will do just that by featuring a curation of sex-positive\, ethical erotic films with an underlying theme and panel for discussion. \nThis Pass The Porn is all about Squirting and Ejaculation. And yeah….things are gonna get wet. From wet orgasms to non-ejaculatory prostate orgasms\, Pass the Porn aims to change our relationship with the way we watch porn\, helping you separate fact from fiction and find what is healthy for you. \nIs squirting like they show it in porn? Is my ejaculate normal? How do you ejaculate more or change the taste of your semen? Our panels will navigate these questions and more between films. \nOngoing workshops and activations will occur in our upstairs space throughout the evening \n:::: FEATURING ::::\nGuilt-Free\, Indie Smut\nMusings from Sexologists\, Erotic Performers\, Thought Leaders\nMini Body Work sessions for Vulva Owners\nInto the Mind of the Multi-orgasmic Man\nSensation & Wax Play\n“Water Sports”\nInterconnective Speed Dating and more…… \n:::: SAFETY | PLEASE READ :::: \nThis is a hands off event. While cuddling\, kissing and mingling are allowed and encouraged\, there is NO sexual play or nudity permitted at this event. This is for the safety and comfort of everyone within this container. While it’s perfectly okay to be turned on by what you watch—it is made with that in mind\, after all—we like to keep a 3 second rule when it comes to creeping. As in: after three seconds\, a stare becomes creepy. We also follow an alert system – alert a person or staff member what someone is doing makes you uncomfortable. They will get a warning and if they do it again they will be removed from the event. Pass the Porn is an education first event and part of that education is how to behave like a civil human around others. I.E. this isn’t an event for you to jerk off to the people sitting around you. If we’re going to have sex and watch porn\, we should be able to talk about it. \n:::: QUESTIONS? ::::\nWhat’s the difference between the tiers?\nNothing! The sooner you buy them\, the cheaper they are! \nWhat do I wear?\nLingerie\, Pajamas\, Street Clothes. There’s no uniform\, unless you want there to be…. \nCan I come alone?\nBring your friends\, bring your boo\, or just bring yourself. Pass the Porn is an event aimed to make porn social and socially acceptable. That includes being comfortable talking about it amongst friends and partners as well as experiencing it around other people. The point is: You’re not alone when in the company of like-minded individuals. \nWhat if I get an erection during the films?\nGreat! That likely will happen and isn’t a big deal. What an excellent time to practice being aroused in a social situation and then not expecting anything to happen because of it!

SUMMARY:Benin City\, Burning
DESCRIPTION:In February 1897\, British troops launched a ‘Punitive Expedition’ on the Kingdom of Benin\, swiftly and violently destroying much of Benin City and pillaging thousands of royal artworks and sacred objects. The Edo people have requested these artefacts back but most of the museums have staunchly refused. \nPoet Inua Ellams\, who hails from Benin City in Nigeria\, will read his poem sequence Fuck/Empire\, about one such artefact\, a tusk\, now housed at the Manchester Museum. He will then be joined by Nigerian artist Victor Ehikhamenor\, Pitt Rivers Museum Curator and author of The Brutish Museums Dan Hicks and Manchester Museum Director Esme Ward in conversation with writer and broadcaster Afua Hirsch to discuss the history\, the legacy and the thorny issue of restitution. \nIn partnership with Penned in the Margins. \n— \nVictor Ehikhamenor is an artist\, photographer\, and writer born in Edo State\, Nigeria\, whose politically motivated works are influenced by the duality of African traditional religion and the interception of Western beliefs\, memories and nostalgia. His latest play was an adaptation of Chekhov’s Three Sisters set in Nigeria\, staged at the National Theatre. The Actual his fifth poetry release\, and first full collection was published in 2020 by Penned in the Margins. \nDan Hicks is Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford and Curator at the Pitt Rivers Museum. His award-winning research focuses on the restitution of African cultural heritage from Euro-American collections\, focusing on the place of ideas of cultural whiteness in ongoing histories of colonial violence. His most recent book is The Brutish Museums. \nAfua Hirsch is a writer\, broadcaster and former barrister. She is a columnist for The Guardian\, writes for magazines including VOGUE\, Time and National Geographic and her book Brit(ish): On Race\, Identity and Belonging was a Sunday Times bestseller. SUMMARY:Cockney Conversations Month 2022: 3rd March – 4th April 2022
DESCRIPTION:The first Cockney Conversations Month* runs from Thursday 3rd March- Monday 4th April 2022 and kicks off with six online discussions on the significance of Cockney cultural heritage and how it adapted to physical\, social and cultural changes in the East End. \nWhat are Cockney Cultures?\nThe Cockney identity is under threat from bias\, prejudice and ignorance. However\, history shows how Cockney is an identity based on positive\, inclusive values. We celebrate what it means to be Cockney today\, for all creeds and races\, from its East End heartland and beyond\, through to the global Cockney diaspora. Cockney Cultures encourages greater self-belief\, confidence\, and pride in who Cockneys are\, what they stand for\, and how they can best work together to face their shared future. \nCockney Cultures is asking interested individuals\, cultural and community groups\, public bodies and venues to work with us through support\, resourcing and long-term collaboration. The idea grew out of a public debate held in March 2021 called ‘Can Cockney Be Saved?’ led by Andy Green from Grow Social Capital CIC. Since then\, Andy and Saif Osmani from the Bengali East End Heritage Society joined heads to kickstart the initiative to celebrate the culture of London’s working-class communities.\nCome along and join us in the debates and discussions! \nSo what’s in store for Cockney Conversations Month 2022? \nOnline discussions and debates (every 45 minutes): \n1) ‘Is Cockney dying?’\, Thursday 3rd March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): guest academic sociolinguists\, cultural commentators and questions from the audience. BOOKING LINK: https://iscockneydying.eventbrite.com \n2) ‘The Story of Cockney in 50 Objects’\, Thursday 10th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): a Cockney ‘Room 101’ where visitors can recommend their top 50 cultural objects. BOOKING LINK: https://50cockneyobjects.eventbrite.com \n3) ‘Is Essex Cockney?’\, Thursday 17th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): sharing academic sociolinguistic studies on Cockney diaspora. BOOKING LINK: https://isessexcockney.eventbrite.com \n4) ‘Cockney-Bengali rhyming slang: how can Cockney revivalists learn from the Sylheti-Bengali Language Movement?’\, Thursday 24th March 2022 @ midnight (GMT): BOOKING LINK: https://cockneybengali.eventbrite.com \n5) ‘You havin’ a larf? SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. SUMMARY:Practical Musicology: researching into how to 'do music better' - Book Launch and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:A new monograph by Professor Simon Zagorski-Thomas of the London College of Music\, University of West London which also launches the Bloomsbury Academic book series on 21st Century Music Practice of which he is the series editor. \nThe book deals with research into how to ‘do music better’ rather analysing how it is done. As such\, it is directly relevant to the practical and vocational slant of contemporary music courses and a large slice of new music research. While of course\, an analysis of how something was done can help in our understanding of how to do it better – Practical Musicology is directly aimed at understanding how we develop our ideas of ‘better’ and the strategies we need to achieve those goals. It is therefore something that goes to the heart of the modern university education. \nThe lecture will be held at the University Ealing site\, St Mary’s Road\, London W5 5RF. Registration 5:45pm. Lecture commences at 6pm followed by a reception.

SUMMARY:Charles I and the Civil Wars: The World Turned Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:At 2 pm\, on Tuesday 30 January 1649\, King Charles I stepped onto a wooden scaffold outside Whitehall’s Banqueting House\, knelt in front of thousands of spectators and was publicly beheaded as a traitor. It was the brutal climax of years of civil war\, which had seen tens of thousands of people lose their lives and livelihoods as the kingdoms of England\, Wales\, Scotland and Ireland were plunged into chaos. \nIn this fascinating collaboration with the Museum of London Docklands and HistFest\, bestselling authors Jessie Childs and Leanda de Lisle\, and critically acclaimed playwright and history teacher Thabo Stuck will explore the complex events that led to the fateful moment of Charles’s execution. From the sweeping history of the civil wars and the human stories of debates\, battles and sieges to the mood within the royal court\, the character of Charles I himself\, the resilience of his wife Henrietta Maria\, and the decade-long republican rule that followed. \nIncluding music from Thabo Stuck’s critically acclaimed play\, #50Days\, a panel discussion and immersive re-enactment from the English Civil War Society\, discover the realities of a world turned upside down. There will be an opportunity to purchase the authors’ books at the end of the talk. \nThere are also digital tickets available to watch a livestream of the event. \n  \nAbout \nThabo Stuck is a history teacher from London and the creator and writer of #50Days. #50Days\, Thabo’s debut writing project\, is a Grime Musical that tells the story of the period that leads up to the outbreak of the 17th Century British Civil Wars. Using Grime music\, this show gives underrepresented Brits a voice in telling the story of one of the most integral but often misunderstood narratives of our nation. Described by The Independent as ‘a hurtling exploration of politics and revolution’. \nJessie Childs is an award-winning author\, historian and broadcaster. Her first book\, Henry VIII’s Last Victim\, won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography\, and her second\, God’s Traitors\, won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History. Her third book\, The Siege of Loyalty House: A Civil War Story\, was published in May and hailed by Simon Schama as ‘almost Tolstoyan in its emotional intelligence and literary power’. Jessie reviews for many papers\, including the Sunday Times\, Guardian and London Review of Books\, and her TV contributions include the BAFTA-nominated Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents (BBC 2 & PBS) and two BBC series on Charles I. \nLeanda de Lisle is the author of the bestselling Tudor and Stuart history praised for meticulous research as well as strong narratives. She has a Masters degree in history from Oxford University. TUDOR\, her biography of the Tudor family 1437-1603\, was a top ten Sunday Times bestseller\, BBC History book of the year\, Daily Telegraph book of the year\, and History Today book of the year. THE SISTERS WHO WOULD BE QUEEN; THE TRAGEDY OF MARY\, KATHERINE AND LADY JANE GREY\, was a New York Times best seller and is the inspiration for Phillippa Gregory’s 2017 novel THE LAST TUDOR as well as Elizabeth Fremantle’s Sisters of Treason. WHITE KING\, a biography of the doomed Charles I\, was the winner of the 2018 Historical Writers Association non-fiction crown. Her latest\, on Henrietta Maria\, is a revisionist biography of a reviled queen and a Times and Sunday Times book of the year. \n  \nHistFest is an innovative history festival and events company\, which produces online and in-person events and courses for global audiences. \nThe English Civil War Society bring history to life through the authentic re-creation of 17th-century military and civil life\, stimulating interest in the turbulent period in British history when the country was torn apart by civil war. \n

SUMMARY:Making the West End a fashion destination
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about how Jewish designers innovated\, defied expectations and transformed the West End. \n\n\n\nJoin us and learn more about the stories of Jewish designers\, makers and retailers who made London’s West End a fashion destination. From the glitz and glamour of Carnaby Street boutiques to the sophisticated styles of couturiers\, the West End has been home to a host of fashion makers who dressed the rich and famous and founded retail chains still on today’s high street. \n\n\n\nIn this discussion\, we invite special guest speakers Beatrice Behlen\, Rowland Gee (son of Cecil Gee)\, Danielle Sprecher and Dr Liz Tregenza to reflect on the broad range of fashion stories in the West End and explore how Jewish makers of all levels of fame and obscurity contributed to making London a fashion capital. \n\n\n\nThis event includes FREE access to the Fashion City exhibition. Please note the exhibition will be open after the event\, between 8–9pm. \n\n\n\nTo book tickets and for more information on speakers\, follow the link to the Museum of London Docklands website.
