SUMMARY:Nature Morte: The Extermination of Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Nature Morte: The Extermination of Ukraine is the result of extensive research by British artist Piers Secunda. \nApproaching the deliberate destruction of cultural history and national identity through the depiction of traditional Ukrainian dishes and their ingredients\, at first sight Nature Morte is an exhibition of still lifes. Based on photographs taken by Secunda during visits to Ukraine in 2024 and 2026\, the paintings were made with ink he produced from charcoal gathered in Kharviv\, the site of the first Ukrainian Government building destroyed by Russia’s invasion in 2022. \nArranged as pyramids to reflect the power structures behind the kidnapping and forced military training of Ukranian children\, and the hierarchies behind the targeted bombing and systematic looting of cultural artefacts\, the paintings act as portals to an archive of evidence. Reached via QR codes\, the names and faces of the perpetrators are presented alongside extensive supporting material. \nThe exhibition is complemented by a map of more than five thousand points of damage to cultural sites recorded across Ukraine\, and a 40-minute documentary by Secunda’s long-term collaborator David Miller. \n  \nFor more details\, click HERE

Visitors can support The Friends of Holland Park by buying a work from the exhibition or by entering the raffle for one of the tempting prizes donated by local businesses. \nEvery year\, one artist is offered a dedicated feature wall for a more extensive presentation. This year\, The Friends invited Gordon French to provide a mini-retrospective of his own creative practice to thank him and his family for organising the art exhibition for the past 12 years. \nThe concept of holding an art show at the heart of Holland Park was introduced by Christopher Wood and the late Sir Hugh Casson\, renowned architect and former President of the Royal Academy\, during their respective tenures as Chairman and President of the Friends of Holland Park. \nWorking in close liaison with the local borough and park staff\, The Friends of Holland Park is a local community group dedicated to the preservation\, protection and improvement of Holland Park as a place of historic and ecological interest and beauty. \nThe exhibition is sponsored by The Ilchester Estates\, which is fitting as the Ilchester family were the last private owners of Holland House.

SUMMARY:Iconomorphosis
DESCRIPTION:Iconomorphosis describes the transformation of meaning through works of art that conceal their message until placed in a relevant cultural context. The eight artists in in this exhibition explore deceptive realities in contemporary life with works ranging from painting and sculpture to film and performance. \nCurated by Othello De’Souza-Hartley\, the exhibition addresses the tension between internal perceptions and external preconceptions\, through visual codes and symbolisms informed by individual experience and collective memory.  \nKamalishe Hiraldo\, Arlene Wandera and Abdollah Nafisi explore notions of belonging through working with discarded\, rejected or repurposed objects and materials\, while Taballa Tabasom’s practice is an enquiry into body memory and belonging through gendered and queer perspectives. \nWorking in sculpture and film respectively\, Sonia E Barrett and Blue Smith transform historical objects and archival footage into tools of narrative-making from within a postcolonial framework. \nOthello De’Souza’s integrates found objects into his predominantly black paintings as an invitation to look beyond first impressions or perceived imperfections\, while the ‘Black Nausea’ in BLCKGEEZER’s work has its origin in the artist’s ongoing experience of breast cancer and chemotherapy. \nWhether picked at random or for their inherent qualities\, for aesthetic or emotional reasons\, the elements that inform the works in Iconomorphosis provide a visual bridge between remembered pasts and imagined futures and question notions of unconditional truth.

DESCRIPTION:Liszt Institute London is delighted to present Cross-Section\, our first group show\, bringing together 17 Hungarian artists. \nEmbarking on an exciting new journey at the Liszt Institute London\, as we open our renewed gallery space to the wider public\, Cross-Section marks our inaugural group exhibition\, presenting a compelling and diverse selection of artworks. \nThe Érd Collective was born in the rapidly expanding commuter town of Érd\, located on the outskirts of Budapest. With no established traditions\, renowned predecessors\, or a thriving local art scene to provide a foundation for a small group of artists to collaboratively organise artistic work\, it is a truly exceptional artists’ colony. Founded in 2009 by 8 painters\, with a commitment to artistic integrity\, the group deliberately distanced itself from stylistic trends and commercial pressures. \nOver the years\, close personal relationships have formed among the 13 to 15 artists who participate annually. These bonds\, coupled with the distinctive and authentic artistic voices of each member\, have profoundly shaped the work produced during their residencies. The exhibition features a rich spectrum of painterly approaches — from non-figurative to representational\, constructive to expressive — each driven by individual internal impulses and shaped by diverse stylistic directions. \nBeyond fostering collaborative artistic practice\, one of the primary aims of the collective has been the creation of a contemporary art collection drawn from participants’ works. Today\, this carefully curated and ever-growing collection — now comprising over 150 pieces — offers a focused and insightful cross-section of contemporary Hungarian painting. \nWe are proud to showcase the paintings of 17 artists from the Érd Collective at the Liszt Institute London. \nJoin us for the opening celebrations of Cross-Section on 5 June\, 6.00-8.00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:With Particle Zoo Sandra Beccarelli blurs the lines between exhibition and artist residency by showing a finished body of work alongside work in progress\, with visitors playing an active role in determining the direction of the latter. \nOver the course of four weeks\, Beccarelli will occupy the gallery’s upper space and provide visitors an opportunity to gain an insight into her creative process. \nBorrowing the title from a physics term used to describe the wide variety of subatomic particles that make up the universe\, her paintings are inspired by notions of change\, impermanence and transformation expressed through a process that allows for boundless possibilities. \nLed by the physicality of painting and the inherent characteristics of materials\, compositions evolve through a process of application and erasure\, hiding and revealing\, often covering both sides of the canvas. \nParticle Zoo is the first in a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects at One Paved Court.

SUMMARY:Jakub Matuška aka Masker: A Shocking Experience Behind the Curtain
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Czech Centre London presents A Shocking Experience Behind the Curtain\, an exhibition of new paintings by Jakub Matuška\, aka Masker\, the award-winning representative of new figurative painting in Central and Eastern Europe\, renowned for detailed combinations of digital manipulations\, airbrushes and masterly use of traditional drawing and painting techniques. The artist returns to the UK with the first major exhibition in over a decade. \nFor Jakub Matuška\, 2023 was a pivotal year. Technically and thematically\, he reached a level of self-assurance he had been building toward for years\, crafting his stylistic universe as one of the most prominent figures on the Czech art scene. He celebrated his newfound confidence with an extensive monograph\, A Man of Special Shapes\, summarizing fifteen years of artistic development and maturation. This was accompanied by two outsized exhibitions: the critically acclaimed installation When the Wings of Swallows Obliterate a Granite Block from the Face of the Earth at the Castle Riding School in Hluboká nad Vltavou\, and the popular exhibit The Sphere\, Or You’ll Pass Ten Stones on the Way to the Abyss at Villa Pellé in Prague. Simultaneously he has prepared a larger presentation at the international stage\, where he has been making his mark since his prolonged stays in London and New York\, and through representation by galleries in Paris and Leipzig. In the spring of 2024\, he launched a major installation in Tokyo’s Shibuya district\, which now continues in London\, taking over both Kensington galleries of the Czech Centre. \nMatuška’s work has been recognised for its meticulous combination of hand-drawn sketches\, digital interventions and acrylics applied on canvases with sprays and brushes. His richly detailed\, vividly coloured figurative paintings\, which explore existential yet poetic themes from contemporary urban life\, balance the weariness and melancholy of their subjects with pastel lightness and implicit humour. The post-analogue response to the intersection of the “old” and virtual worlds gives rise to a sophisticated interplay of digitally manipulated motifs expertly executed in traditional painting techniques\, wholly revealed only in close\, personal interaction with his large-scale canvases. \nA Shocking Experience Behind the Curtain presents the selection of the last two series of Matuška’s paintings\, most of which are exhibited for the first time. \nHere\, the painter’s life themes\, the difficulty of increasingly mediated communication\, the tension between observable and inner worlds\, or the struggle to bridge the gap between the conceptual and the material on the canvas\, resurface with renewed urgency. Constantly examining his own experiences and life in his immediate surroundings while remaining acutely attuned to the movements within Western societies\, he returns to the ups and downs of family life and its intersection with creative work. \nThe figures in these new paintings—now seemingly successful\, middle-aged men—often retreat from the realities of their middle class anchoring into the woods\, the thickets of city parks\, or the silence of a nocturnal studio. Tragicomic and vulnerable\, instead of achieving the authority that masculine stereotypes assign to the peak of one’s productive years\, they find themselves bumping against the limits of understanding with their partners and humanity in general. \nBut despite the melancholy and struggles with both personal and societal bipolar tendencies\, the subject of the exhibition is not sorrow but rather a contemplative observation of inner processes\, exploring the paradox of imagined versus seen reality on a single plane. \nThe transitions between worlds are formally conveyed through unexpected combinations of perspectives\, cut-outs offering insights\, or shifts in technique. Even smaller formats play with the magnified reproduction of quick\, loose ballpoint pen sketches\, switching between parts developed freehand\, lighter shading or layering different strengths of linear strokes\, gradually moving towards more dominant motifs built with quick\, loose brushstrokes directly onto the canvas. First\, the latest works add watercolour effects to large-format paintings with finer strokes and pastel colours. SUMMARY:Richard Smith: Intersections
DESCRIPTION:Flowers Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of works by British artist Richard Smith CBE (1931 – 2016). Recognised as one of the most influential painters of his generation\, Smith’s work of five decades evades precise categorisation\, with an expansive abstract painterly style very much his own. \nThe exhibition coincides with the launch of a major new publication Richard Smith: Artworks 1954-2013\, with essays by David Alan Mellor\, Chris Stephens\, Alex Massouras and Martin Harrison. This new study is intended to reignite discourse around this diverse artist\, whose impressive oeuvre is fertile territory for a new reassessment. Also concurrently on view is Richard Smith: Kites at the Edge Art Centre\, University of Bath until 17 December\, 2022. \nThis exhibition presents a survey of works from 1965 to 2009\, focusing on intersections of colour\, form and material construction. Included are a selection of Smith’s critically acclaimed paintings on three dimensional canvases from the 1960s\, including A Whole Year and Half a Day VIII (1966)\, formerly exhibited at his solo exhibition for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1970. During this period Smith created monumental sculptural shaped canvases\, which explored a radical new tension between volume\, colour and surface. In A Whole Year and Half a Day VIII\, the canvas appears to unfurl playfully from the wall\, while in Triptych\, 1965\, three vivid carton-like panels protrude into the space of the gallery\, recalling the bold impact of advertising hoardings. \nOther works take this experimentation with shaped supports in new directions. In works such as Maryland (1972)\, and A Dark Present (1972) horizontal and vertical tapes intersect with the surface of the canvas. Here\, Smith’s interest in the hidden grid-like warp and weft of the canvas is accented by its interwoven construction at an enlarged scale. \nAlso presented are a selection of Smith’s works on paper which provide enriching further insights into the paintings around them. Purple\, Red and Green Intersections (1969) exemplifies the ways in which Smith uses bold colour to delineate forms\, while also employing sculptural strategies such as cuts and folds\, creating a striking sense of depth and structure in their two-dimensional surfaces.

DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. DESCRIPTION:Free Art Exhibitions Free Galleries in London \nWhat does it mean to mythologise a place\, person or memory? And how do these stories shape our perception of the world\, history and different cultures? These are the questions that Edouard Baribeaud\, Tae Kim and Tendai Mupita explore through richly layered visual narratives that blur the boundaries between ancient and contemporary\, spiritual and temporal. Legends\, the latest group show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s Wandsworth space\, presents a diverse collection of works that contemplate stories’ powerful psychological and emotional impact. \nFor this exhibition\, French-German artist Edouard Baribeaud explores the transformative and elusive qualities of light about identity and narrative. For example\, the diptych entitled George and Theodora is inspired by the vivid memory of a striking couple. The artist once encountered at a party and Paolo Uccello’s painting of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. In his work\, Baribeaud recasts the couple into a modern-day version of the myth\, but the roles are reversed so that the princess appears as the protagonist (the knight). The painting Sebastian similarly brings together the contemporary and the classical\, taking its departing point from another brief moment witnessed by the artist. In this case\, Baribeaud was struck by an illuminated entrance hall of a building at night. “The reflections of the street lights on the glass doors and the mirrors inside the building created an almost psychedelic effect\,” he says. “I thought it would be a perfect stage for a painting.” In the image\, an elegant man waits in the hall\, as if caught in the threshold between two worlds: the interior and the exterior in both a literal and metaphorical sense. Alongside these paintings\, Baribeaud has also presented three drawings\, created in collaboration with his partner Sophia Andreotti\, which take the format of tarot cards and illustrate imagined characters representing visions of the present and the future. \nSeoul-based artist Tae Kim’s delicate paintings form part of an ongoing series entitled The Faceless Gamer\, which explores the heightened emotional experiences of the gaming world and the complex notion of identity within this realm. Each work depicts a hybrid being\, a deity-like figure\, in a distinct psychological state. While these are Kim’s imaginations of players that she’s met in online battle games\, the portraits meditate on how the distinction between digital and actual is becoming increasingly blurred and how that might impact not only our perceptions but also how we connect and socialise. Significantly\, the artist employs techniques used in ancient Joseon dynasty portrait paintings\, which aristocrats and royalty mainly commissioned to illustrate their status\, wealth and intelligence. By drawing on this tradition\, Kim elevates alternative characters and hybrid digital experiences as part of a historically significant cultural shift that offers a fluid\, creative space for people from different backgrounds to come together and shape their narratives. \nZimbabwean artist Tendai Mupita’s practice is deeply rooted in the rich heritage and stories of Shona culture. Large portions of his compositions are composed of tiny brushstrokes that create intricate\, repetitive patterns that imply a sense of texture and movement and invite the viewer to examine the surface more closely. For this exhibition\, the artist presents a captivating new series of works that explore specific cultural ideas and rituals around death and grieving. For example\, many traditional Zimbabwean kitchens feature a stoop-like structure that serves a functional purpose as a shelf for cooking pots and water storage. Still\, it also becomes an altar where the coffins are laid\, and people go to communicate with their ancestors. Mupita depicts a figure kneeling at the stoop in one painting while a god-like form appears rising amidst the patterning. While this intimate connection between life and death may seem morbid from a Western perspective\, Mupita’s use of gentle\, uplifting hues suggests a sense of harmony and connectedness. \nSimilarly\, in another artwork\, a hybrid human figure appears draped over a coffin or grave; However\, there is undoubtedly something unsettling or even monstrous about the scene. The regularity and expansiveness of the blue and white patterning in the background have a calming effect. At the same time\, the organic\, circular forms nod to the natural life cycle. \nThese works initiate an intriguing dialogue between colour\, form and texture that emphasises art’s ability to both communicate complex non-verbal experiences and break down the boundaries between different cultures and histories.

DESCRIPTION:Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery is pleased to present the solo show ‘The Desperate Journey II’ by Tewodros Hagos. \nExhausted faces\, framed by bright orange life jackets\, gaze out at the viewer\, their eyes filled with emotion. At the same time\, other figures are huddled together in groups\, their bodies wrapped in shimmering golden blankets as they watch distant boats on stormy seas. These poignant paintings are a continuation of Ethiopian artist Tewodros Hagos’series The Desperate Journey\, aiming to raise awareness of the global migrant crisis and address the dehumanising effect of journalistic imagery and footage. For his solo exhibition entitled The Desperate Journey II at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London Bridge\, Hagos presents exquisite new works that elevate the tragedy of the situation and the emotional experience of each of his subjects. \nThe series initially began to respond to the artist’s increasing realisation of the ineffectiveness of news stories and imagery to convey lived experience or complex truths. While many media feed images may provoke an immediate emotional response\, they are often deliberately sensationalised to shock the viewer. Over time\, the bombardment of such imagery risks normalisation of what ‘remains one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time.’ ‘People don’t realise that the migrant crisis is ongoing. The media focus switches from one direction to another. Currently\, it’s on coronavirus\, while here in Ethiopia and Africa more generally\, millions of people continue to be displaced as a result of conflict\,’ says Hagos. Through the classical\, static medium of painting\, the artist invites a slower\, deeper kind of contemplation that counters the fast-paced consumption of digital media. \nSignificantly\, the works\, especially the close-up portraits\, convey a sense of strength and tragedy\, loss and grief. The painting entitled Journey (40)\, for example\, depicts a young boy staring directly at the viewer. Instead of pleading\, his expression is solemn and dignified. In many works\, Hagos also transforms the foil blanket\, which is traditionally used in emergencies to keep people warm\, into a thing of beauty. It is gold and silver surface is luminous in the darkness. \nAt the same time\, the stark contrast of light and dark creates an unsettling atmosphere and almost surreal effect. This is perhaps most notable in the work entitled Journey (42)\, in which a man appears enrobed in a golden blanket\, his presence huge and looming against the inky blue background of the sky and ocean. The composition recalls traditional portrait paintings and the portrayal of grandeur. Still\, instead of a lavish\, homely domestic setting\, the vast\, empty sky conveys an aching sense of isolation and loneliness mirrored in the man’s expression and watery\, red eyes. In this way\, Hagos creates a more complex\, layered narrative that demands a deeper level of engagement while questioning which individuals and events are traditionally recorded by history. \nAmongst the most devastating paintings take a wider perspective\, focusing on the perilous sea journey that hundreds of migrants make every day in search of better living conditions. In one work\, a dangerously overcrowded boat floats towards the front of the canvas\, while in the background\, a second boat is enveloped in flames\, smoke billowing into the sky in huge plumes. Another painting depicts life jackets floating emptily on the waves\, once again underlining the potentially fatal risk that such a journey presents. As with all of the works in the series\, the paintings possess a haunting sense of stillness that reflects the historical impact of the crisis and appeals to our shared sense of humanity.
