SUMMARY:The Friends of Holland Park Art Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, The Friends of Holland Park once again turns the Orangery at the heart of the park into an art gallery. \nFor more than forty years\, Friends who are artists and artists who become Friends have come together to show and sell their artwork. The colourful presentation of works by more than 80 predominantly local artists ranges from greeting cards and small prints to large paintings\, as well as jewellery\, ceramics\, and sculpture. \n  \nA jury led by curator and artist Gordon French awards cash prizes for artistic excellence in several categories as well as for work that best expresses the Spirit of Holland Park. Visitors can support The Friends of Holland Park by buying a work from the exhibition or by entering the raffle for one of the tempting prizes donated by local businesses. \nEvery year\, one artist is offered a dedicated feature wall for a more extensive presentation. This year\, The Friends invited Gordon French to provide a mini-retrospective of his own creative practice to thank him and his family for organising the art exhibition for the past 12 years. \n  \nThe concept of holding an art show at the heart of Holland Park was introduced by Christopher Wood and the late Sir Hugh Casson\, renowned architect and former President of the Royal Academy\, during their respective tenures as Chairman and President of the Friends of Holland Park. \n  \nWorking in close liaison with the local borough and park staff\, The Friends of Holland Park is a local community group dedicated to the preservation\, protection and improvement of Holland Park as a place of historic and ecological interest and beauty. \n  \nThe exhibition is sponsored by The Ilchester Estates\, which is fitting as the Ilchester family were the last private owners of Holland House.

SUMMARY:Carromancy Divination Workshop with Rose-Marie Luk
DESCRIPTION:With the flickering glow of candlelight\, we will convene to unlock ancient wisdom and the language of the spirit. This workshop invites you to explore Carromancy Divination\, the timeless art of interpreting abstract forms from melted wax to access hidden messages by tapping into the subconscious\, and to set personal intentions for the days ahead. \nHeld within IMT Gallery’s group exhibition\, The House\, featuring works that all\, often through degrees of autobiography\, speaks to some of the discordances of being at home: perhaps the anticipation of order amidst the everyday; or an expectation of comfort\, often amidst insecurity or tension. In dialogue with the exhibition\, carromancy invites you to attune to the subtle emotional landscapes of home. \nImmerse yourself in the gallery space\, subtly infused with aromatic lavender to relax the mind and calm the senses. A curated experience awaits: watch as lilac wax is poured into water to create abstract forms\, engage in guided sketching to capture fleeting shapes\, and join in meditative reflections that draw you closer to your intuitive self.  \nIn this two-hour workshop led by interdisciplinary artist Rose-Marie Luk\, you will: \n\nDiscover the ancient origins of Carromancy\, tracing its roots from Celtic druids to diverse indigenous traditions.\n\n\nEngage in a step-by-step creative process: pouring\, observing\, drawing\, and interpreting the shifting forms of candle wax.\n\n\nCraft a unique talisman spell jar by combining your wax creation with foraged objects and healing crystals\, imbuing it with your personal intentions for self-awareness and transformation.\n\n\nParticipate in reflective meditations designed to harmonise your creative energies and deepen your connection to the universe.\n\nAbout Rose-Marie Luk \nRose-Marie Luk explores her cross-cultural identity through transformative art practices that channel ancestral wisdom\, evoke forgotten memories\, and uncover hybrid creations. Using automatic techniques and sigil calligraphy\, she bridges the sacred and the spiritual\, transmuting confoundment into clarity. Rose-Marie’s practice speaks to lost languages and evolving identities\, encouraging connection\, growth\, and self discovery. In this workshop\, Rose-Marie channels ancient divination practices to help you reconnect with your inner vision and discover the alchemy of transformation. \nWhat To Expect  \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Rose-Marie’s workshop\, as told by previous participants:  \n“[…] It exceeded expectations! I found this very interesting and relaxing. The environment has been so calm\, friendly and welcoming. I’ve loved how accessible this has been for someone who doesn’t consider themselves as a ‘natural’ artist as such.” \n“It’s a beautiful process to pace out and spend time doing – it gave space for really going with initial impression and working upon that.” \n“I learnt a lot about shifting how I observe and letting in the oracle nature of carromancy. It is worth trying because it is a unique way of spending an evening with others.” \nThis workshop is open to all—artists\, writers\, dreamers\, cloud-gazers\, poetic thinkers\, deep feelers\, curious explorers\, and open minded visionaries alike. \nPlease bring your preferred drawing materials and sketchbook\, additional supplies will also be provided. \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. A limited number of tickets are available free of charge for residents of Tower Hamlets. These places have been lovingly created with support from Tower Hamlets Council.

SUMMARY:Peter Peri in Conversation with Dávid Fehér – Book launch and display of recent paintings
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Liszt Institute London for an evening celebrating the launch of a new monograph on Peter Peri\, published by Einspach Czapolai Fine Art. \nPeri will be in conversation with Dávid Fehér\, Director of the Central European Research Institute for Art History of the Museum of Fine Arts. Their discussion will explore Peri’s artistic practice\, key themes in his work\, and the ideas shaping his most recent projects\, offering insight into both the newly published monograph and his wider artistic trajectory. \nThe event will also feature a display of Peri’s latest paintings in the gallery\, providing a unique opportunity to experience his practice first-hand alongside the critical perspectives presented in the publication. \nCopies of the book will be available on site. All are welcome to attend. Register via Eventbrite. \n\n\nPeter Peri (b. 1971\, London) \nPeter Peri’s primary media are drawing\, sculpture\, and painting: three distinct bodies of work that are developed independently by the artist to create a complex set of interrelations. All works are specifically invested in the tension between line and volume\, figuration and abstraction\, and in the questioning of tradition and influence in Modernism. \nA graduate of Chelsea College of Art\, he made his debut at Bloomberg New Contemporaries in 2003. He has exhibited widely internationally\, including Tate Britain\, the Hayward Gallery\, and Kunsthalle Basel. Peri’s work can be found in the collections of Tate\, the Victoria & Albert Museum\, and the Museum of Fine Arts\, Budapest. Peri’s work has a personal connection to Modernism. His grandfather was Peter László Péri (1899–1967)\, a Hungarian émigré to Britain who was involved in Constructivism before turning to architecture and later in his life to Realism \n\n\nDávid Fehér \nDávid Fehér is an art historian\, director of the Central European Research Institute for Art History of the Museum of Fine Arts\, and assistant professor at the Institute of Art History at the Eötvös Loránd University. His research covers 20th-century and contemporary art\, including Pop Art\, Photorealism\, and related movements. He has curated numerous exhibitions and has published widely in academic journals\, exhibition catalogues\, and art publications. He is a member of the Hungarian Section of the International Association of Art Critics.

SUMMARY:Seascapes – Solo Exhibition by Liz Gilbert
DESCRIPTION:‘Seascapes’ is a solo exhibition by Liz Gilbert and reflects the significance of time spent by and in water. The works reflect the artist’s life journey in metaphorical expressions informed by childhood memories of time spent on the beach\, a career trajectory taking in theatre\, TV and film\, and the experience of distance ocean swimming. \nGilbert captures a sense of melancholy and nostalgia on paper\, in photography and film. Small sketches created en plein air\, capturing memories of place\, inform drawings\, prints\, and oil paintings\, measuring time not by the hands on a clock but by the turning tide. \n“To work plein air\, one needs to be alert\, seeing intently\, moving pastel and charcoal dust into satisfactory resting places on a surface is a collaboration of seeing – thinking – drawing- touch and breathing with empathy.” \nMeeting the challenge as the wind moves clouds\, light changes\, and rain comes in requires a well-honed skill acquired over many years of experimenting from dawn to dusk. The reward is a sense of freedom akin to that of swimming in open water—a sense of timeless absorption. \nGilbert holds an MA in Fine Art Drawing from Wimbledon School of Art and has consistently exhibited in London and St. Ives\, Cornwall. Her artwork is in collections across the UK\, Europe\, and the USA. \n‘Seascapes ‘is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects\, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through group and solo exhibitions. \nEstablished in 2017 by mixed-media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and painter Annamarie Dzendrowskyj\, the collective curates exhibitions centred around themes pertinent to contemporary artistic practice and in response to exhibition spaces that surpass the idea of the white cube.

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Waxing Crescent Moon with artist Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:As we approach July’s full moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the days ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process\, of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self. \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with frankincense – woody\, fresh and up-lifting. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. \nIn this two hour workshop we will explore the mysteries of plants through drawing\, painting\, and meditative observations\, we will go beyond the confines of the ordinary. We’ll take a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene Rose tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. We will consider rose energy* \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University\, and recently delivered the course Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and the Jamyang Buddhist Centre\, as well as sharing insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants: \n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus we were able to connect with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. \n“A very naturally held space offering freedom to be intuitive\, and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a full whole\, rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.” \n*Observations made by Joseph\, with rose – “In alchemy the rose is symbolic of conjunction\, it is supporting and underlying the marriage of opposites. Soft\, buffering\, slowing down. Small insects dwell within petals\, cushioned\, intoxicated. This is how it felt for me too. The bee moves closer to the centre\, three rounds of rose tea. Perfumed aroma in swirls and spirals\, circular time. Definition and edge dissolved. Petals unfurling. Surrender myself to it. Rose is associated with love and romance.”\nThis workshop is designed for individuals who seek to deepen their connection with nature and explore their creative potential. No prior experience is required – just an open heart and a curious mind. While drawing materials will be provided\, feel free to bring your own sketchbooks and preferred materials to enhance your experience. \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. A limited number of tickets are available free of charge to residents of Tower Hamlets. These places have been lovingly created with support from Tower Hamlets Council.

SUMMARY:Chromatic Journey
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Talbot’s practise explores the parallel between the gestural energy of the Abstract Expressionist movement and the figural drama of the Baroque and mannerist period of the 15/16th century. She seeks to achieve this through interrupting the spontaneous application of the gesture by isolating it through digital interface and choreographing the composition. Importantly the energy in the gesture is retained but the spontaneity is replaced by a narrative dynamism created through considered choreography. \nWithin the paintings\, in particular of the mannerist period\, are geometric structural elements. These work to create tension and pictorial space in relation to the sensuous figures and fabrics. In her practise Jennifer references the structure by installing the work directly on the wall utilising the architectural aspects of the gallery to define the scale of the work. In some pieces edges of the wall are referenced within the composition to create tension within gestural composition. \nColour in the mannerist paintings was often bizarre\, jewel-like and high-key. Jennifer is seeking to deepen her engagement with this period by codifying the colours and using them as inspiration. Painters of this period embraced emerging technologies and colours\, an ambition she hopes to recreate in her current practise. \nChromatic Journey is part of a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects\, a group of emerging and mid-career artists who showcase meticulously chosen artworks through a series of group and solo exhibitions. \nEstablished in 2017 by mixed media artist Hanna ten Doornkaat and painter Annamarie Dzendrowskyj the collective curates exhibitions centred around themes pertinent to contemporary artistic practice\, and in response to exhibition spaces that surpass the idea of the white cube. \nChromatic Journey runs concurrently with Possible Impossibilities\, a collaborative exhibition by Hanna ten Doornkaat and Shiba Huizer.

SUMMARY:Particle Zoo
DESCRIPTION:With Particle Zoo Sandra Beccarelli blurs the lines between exhibition and artist residency by showing a finished body of work alongside work in progress\, with visitors playing an active role in determining the direction of the latter. \nOver the course of four weeks\, Beccarelli will occupy the gallery’s upper space and provide visitors an opportunity to gain an insight into her creative process. \nBorrowing the title from a physics term used to describe the wide variety of subatomic particles that make up the universe\, her paintings are inspired by notions of change\, impermanence and transformation expressed through a process that allows for boundless possibilities. \nLed by the physicality of painting and the inherent characteristics of materials\, compositions evolve through a process of application and erasure\, hiding and revealing\, often covering both sides of the canvas. \nParticle Zoo is the first in a series of exhibitions hosted by White Noise Projects at One Paved Court.

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Elder Moon Workshop with Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:As we approach December’s full moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the year ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level\, it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self* \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with Yarrow\, earthy and balancing. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on plant gazing and observation techniques. \nIn this two-hour workshop\, we will explore the mysteries of plants through drawing\, painting\, and meditative observations\, going beyond the confines of the ordinary. \nWe reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. We will look at Salvias. They sharpen the mind\, have anti-inflammatory properties\, and are ceremoniously used to purify space. \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh is an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University and recently delivered Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Space\, and shared insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow\, we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants: \n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus\, we connected with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. \n“A naturally held space offers freedom to be intuitive and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.” \nPlease bring your preferred drawing materials and sketchbook; materials will also be provided. \n*Observations made by Joseph plant gazing under Vine Moon with Hawthorn – \n“The hedgerow\, a stopover\, shelter and thicket for beings. Heart tonic\, thicket thickening\, berry red of cardiovascular\, a stopover for birds. Branches shift and alter according to the environment; each lobed leaf differs. The doctrine of signatures\, where plant forms are like body parts\, is the heart as an organ of perception. \nA tiny amount of berries dotting the tree\, gleaning the teeniest amount. It’s before winter\, amongst fullness rather than emptiness.” \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. A limited number of tickets are available free of charge for residents of Tower Hamlets. These places have been lovingly created with support from Tower Hamlets Council. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Vine Moon Workshop with Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Connect with Earth’s plant allies through drawing\, painting and tea ceremony… \nAs we approach September’s Waning Crescent Moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the month ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process\, of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self* \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with Yarrow and Rosemary\, earthy and clearing. \nTake a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. We will select from the hedgerow with hawthorn\, rosehip or hops. We will also consider the hedgerow as thicket\, stopover and shelter for beings. \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University\, and recently delivered the course Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Space\, as well as sharing insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants:\n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus we were able to connect with the plant on a deeper level. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a full whole\, rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.”\n\n“Mindful\, healing\, educational\, communal” \nWhile drawing materials will be provided\, feel free to bring your own sketchbooks and preferred materials to enhance your experience. \n*Observations made by Joseph plant gazing under waxing crescent moon\, with rose – “In alchemy the rose is symbolic of conjunction\, it is supporting and underlying the marriage of opposites. Rose is associated with love and romance”. \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. SUMMARY:The Circle of Everything
DESCRIPTION:An interdisciplinary solo performance featuring live painting\, aerial dance and moving images. \nUsing the shape of the circle\, the work celebrates the life force that holds us up and gives us momentum to move\, think\, live and create. Invisible\, infinite energy. Transpiring through the cyclical nature of existence; from sunrise to sunset\, birth & death\, conscious and subconscious\, throughout time and space. The continuous flow of movement on the ground and in the air. \nIntegrated into the performance is live Japanese Enso painting\, a spiritual practice where the artist paints the work in one masterstroke\, one breath and no corrections afterwards.
The practice gives form to the flow of the energy in the moment\, making invisible synchronicities visible. Symbolically\, the iconic Zen symbol represents the circle of life and the connectedness of existence. The painting will be produced on a large scale to correspond to the human body and the aerial hoop. \nThe art work will remain on stage afterwards as an art installation for the audience to see it up close. \nSimultaneously\, the work reveals the duality at play; higher and lower\, light and shadow\, micro cosmos and macro cosmos\, our sense of connection to oneself\, others\, and the world\, as well as our sense of separation. \nhttps://www.emergingvisions.art/thecircleofeverything \nSunday 18 August – 5:00pm \n\n\n\n\nRunning time:\n\n40\n\n\n\n\n\nSuitable for All Ages

SUMMARY:Mark James - VIVID
DESCRIPTION:Cris Contini Contemporary is delighted to announce the opening of their new London Gallery with VIVID\, a solo exhibition of new paintings by British artist Mark James. \n\n\n\n\nBest known for FREEZE (1993)\, the first TV documentary about Damien Hirst and the YBA generation\, James originally trained at Goldsmiths and has continued to pursue painting alongside creating numerous critically acclaimed TV and feature documentaries on music and the arts. James now divides his time between filmmaking and painting\, and the exhibition at Cris Contini is his debut solo exhibition. \n\nPhotography\, architecture\, music\, colour\, and movement are all part of the fundamental DNA of James’ practice\, conjuring joyful and dynamic spaces of colour\, light\, and movement. Waldemar Januszczak\, the Art Critic of The Sunday Times\, has described James’ paintings as “Pop Suprematism.” James’ paintings are structured to create juxtapositions of shape\, space\, and colour\, evoking a mid-century aesthetic of modernism and a kind of future set in the past. \nJames comments\, “Composers often start with a single note\, or chord\, which becomes the defining sound of the song from which all the other notes flow. My painting process is very similar to this music analogy. It’s always tricky starting the process\, but once I apply the first colour to the canvas\, others follow in reaction”. \nOften created in response to music\, James’ paintings frequently reference the artist’s wide-ranging playlist in their titles\, from ‘Summer Wind’ to ‘Fly With Me’. James comments\, “Although the paintings aren’t inspired by specific songs\, I use song titles to name my paintings by selecting music which I feel most closely resonates with each painting. I particularly like music from the jazz /swing era and a number of people have commented that the paintings have a kind of jazz ‘vibe’. \nJames’ work is held in numerous high-profile private collections. It is prominently featured in the celebrated Groucho alongside many of his YBA peers and Sir Michael Craig-Martin\, the esteemed British artist whom James worked with as a trusted studio assistant for many years.

SUMMARY:Kenji Lim | Spend Time Not Thinking About Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:  \nUnder clear\, magenta skies\, they choose to settle\, nursed by the shade of passing trees. Warmth still lingers in the grasslands\, but the day is fading fast. Shadows of nightwings flicker over the hay\, swooping into branchy nests. \nStep lightly\, and take care of the amoeba underfoot. Leave no trace. The pitter-patter of pseudotoes echoes down desire paths between the shallow groves. Time glides with no familiar route ahead\, and dappled light scatters like many marbles over the blueish plains. The sun is falling\, auburn rays shine over swathes of caterpillar reeds\, their eyes peeping into the beams of last light. Cat tongues uncurl from bleary-faced cocoons\, eager for the night\, for a taste. \nOrbs wait above a lake\, rolling in place\, humming an absent-minded tune. A purr of regeneration dances on the air currents\, charging the lake below. In between contented rocks\, jewel water flows\, giving life to uncommon lands. Fur-laden tracks lead away\, soggy from the fuchsia puddles\, fluffy ends squeezing into secret mossy holes. \nLook down. Fleshy cups\, suckered at the rim of the lake spit pearls along the shoreline. Hungry mouths gape\, teeth brace\, swallowing dusk. Lichen bubbles between a chorus of drinking bristles\, the body hair of this earth. Life is not just surface-bound and sensible. It rains onto the ground\, sunstained\, settling to graze on this rich mess of violet roots. Please don’t touch the wildlife; take it for what it is. \nNew and unexpected stars yield an entangled bond\, shifting form when seen or unseen. That happens here\, between each button paw\, craggy horn\, and stalking eye. It plays out all at once\, under the trail of the moons. \nCan we ask about hills and waters or sing about bracken and fungus? They murmur into each other’s ears. They come down over a cliff face in a river of slime and leaf-fall\, tumbling into the reflection of a low pool. \nIn the age of unconquered pasture\, the wind grazes an unembraceable heaven\, a shyer blush of pink and blue. Rosey hills fold neatly\, with an orange sun hurrying to set between them. The beings beneath its gaze continue\, undisturbed\, as they always have. \nThey rest. Their silence whispers\, off you go now; this place was never meant for you. \nText by Charlotte Cole \nKenji Lim is a British artist based in Essex and born in Singapore. Lim studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art\, London (MA – 2017-2019) and at the Ruskin School of Art\, Oxford University (BFA – 1999-2002). Lim works through sculpture\, video\, digital collage\, installation and painting. His work reflects and refracts the landscape experience through the prisms of culture\, myth\, philosophy\, and the metaphysical\, returning the gaze of Western cultural norms through the eyes of other-than-human actors. Part archaeological\, part Fraggle Rock\, he navigates alternative modes of seeing and understanding the world and its inhabitants. Lim’s work is shown internationally\, including recent exhibitions\, such as Tourist at Galerie Reinthaler\, Vienna\, and Perishing Thirst at Quench Gallery\, Margate. He is an Acme Work/Live Artist at High House in Purfleet\, Essex.

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Marshmallow Moon - Workshop at IMT Gallery
DESCRIPTION:As we approach the halcyon days around the winter solstice\, Joseph Walsh’s workshop ‘Plant Gazing: Under Marshmallow Moon’ offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the upcoming year. \n\n\n\nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly smudged with mugwort to encourage chi flow. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. \n\n\n\nTake a moment to ground yourself and reconnect with your body\, sipping on Marshmallow root (Althaea officinalis) tea cultivated and harvested from Joseph’s wildlife plot. SUMMARY:Richard Smith: Intersections
DESCRIPTION:Flowers Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of works by British artist Richard Smith CBE (1931 – 2016). Recognised as one of the most influential painters of his generation\, Smith’s work of five decades evades precise categorisation\, with an expansive abstract painterly style very much his own. \nThe exhibition coincides with the launch of a major new publication Richard Smith: Artworks 1954-2013\, with essays by David Alan Mellor\, Chris Stephens\, Alex Massouras and Martin Harrison. This new study is intended to reignite discourse around this diverse artist\, whose impressive oeuvre is fertile territory for a new reassessment. Also concurrently on view is Richard Smith: Kites at the Edge Art Centre\, University of Bath until 17 December\, 2022. \nThis exhibition presents a survey of works from 1965 to 2009\, focusing on intersections of colour\, form and material construction. Included are a selection of Smith’s critically acclaimed paintings on three dimensional canvases from the 1960s\, including A Whole Year and Half a Day VIII (1966)\, formerly exhibited at his solo exhibition for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1970. During this period Smith created monumental sculptural shaped canvases\, which explored a radical new tension between volume\, colour and surface. In A Whole Year and Half a Day VIII\, the canvas appears to unfurl playfully from the wall\, while in Triptych\, 1965\, three vivid carton-like panels protrude into the space of the gallery\, recalling the bold impact of advertising hoardings. \nOther works take this experimentation with shaped supports in new directions. In works such as Maryland (1972)\, and A Dark Present (1972) horizontal and vertical tapes intersect with the surface of the canvas. Here\, Smith’s interest in the hidden grid-like warp and weft of the canvas is accented by its interwoven construction at an enlarged scale. \nAlso presented are a selection of Smith’s works on paper which provide enriching further insights into the paintings around them. Purple\, Red and Green Intersections (1969) exemplifies the ways in which Smith uses bold colour to delineate forms\, while also employing sculptural strategies such as cuts and folds\, creating a striking sense of depth and structure in their two-dimensional surfaces.

SUMMARY:Let's talk about you and me - Rebecca Brodskis
DESCRIPTION:Private View: Thursday\, 3rd of November\, 6:30-9 pm(London Bridge). \n \nWide-eyed\, solemn figures stare out at the viewer from brightly coloured backgrounds\, at once bold and spectral\, familiar and strange. While Rebecca Brodskis’ previous paintings were based largely on memories of friends or the lingering images of people she passed on the street\, these latest portraits are drawn entirely from her imagination\, creating a deeper sense of interiority. Let’s talk about you and me; the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery contemplates how we modify our behaviour to align with social expectations and connect with others while sometimes repressing parts of ourselves. \n \nBrodskis’ portraits result from the slow\, meditative process of oil painting which requires the artist to wait for one layer of paint to dry before she can apply the next. As such\, her compositions are precise and graphical in style. Each line is carefully delineated so that as you approach the canvas\, the figures are abstracted into shapes\, floating within a decontextualised\, surreal space. Within this space\, social and visual hierarchies are stripped away\, and our perspective is refocused on colour and gesture. However\, this latest body of work is unusual in that it shares a warm colour palette of oranges\, reds\, pinks and yellows\, which evokes the idea of an internal\, bodily or even womb-like space. At times\, this space seems to indicate emotional harmony\, while at others\, it highlights a disconnect between the external and internal self. In the painting Henrietta\, for example\, the female figure cuts a somewhat severe silhouette\, gazing blanking into the distance. At the same time\, the space that surrounds her is filled with a vivid shade of red\, perhaps hinting at some suppressed emotion. The large-scale diptych titled Dinner Party depicts a group of people gathered around a table\, though instead of engaging with one another\, they appear almost as if they are self-consciously posing for the viewer. Meanwhile\, the cool lilac-coloured background adds to the sense of detachment.\n \nOther works play with ideas of mirroring and reflection to explore how we form connections. In the paintings Safran and Yacine\, the figures almost melt into their backdrops while also appearing in dialogue with one another: their clothing\, hair\, and eyes reflect the same golden orange hues. The clothing and body language of the figures in Another Conversation is similarly synchronised. Though the figures here share the same canvas\, they remain contained within their own spaces\, separated by a thin border that cuts down the centre of the image with visibly defined ridges. However\, there is still a sense of tenderness: their eyes meet across the gap\, and their arms cross the border to touch at the fingertips.\n \nIn a series of three paintings titled Secret #1\, Secret #2\, and The Revelation\, Brodskis creates a narrative around self-perception. In both Secret #1 and Secret #2\, a veiled figure is seated on a chair\, with her back to us\, gazing into a mirror. In both reflections\, the figure is lifting a finger to their lips\, gesturing at the idea of something hidden or unspoken: in Secret #1\, the figure’s face is\, and their hand is black; in Secret #2\, it’s the opposite. The Revelation depicts the same setting; however\, there is no woman in the chair\, only the reflection in which the woman appears half white\, half black\, as if the different parts of her have combined. ‘It’s as if she’s left the real world and jumped inside herself\,’ Brodskis says\, ‘which is sort of what painting does for me. It’s a kind of therapy or meditation.’\n \n\n\nSimilarly\, the image’s stillness\, the canvas’s smooth surface\, the balance of shapes and the rich colour tones invite a deep state of contemplation. Though each portrait possesses its own emotional resonance and tension\, they form a crowd of faces that we are invited to step into and create our own conversations.

SUMMARY:Abstract artist Intisar Alyamani launches her solo exhibition in Connaught Village
DESCRIPTION:Abstract artist Intisar Alyamani is launching her second solo exhibition of this year in Connaught Village on 23rd September.  \nIntisar Alyamani is a Goldsmiths taught artist based in London and her exhibition\, Harmony\,  will be open from 23 September to 17 October 2022 at 12 Connaught Street\, Connaught Village\, London W2. \nHarmony is a series of paintings of what the artist refers to as an extension and a portal into her experience of “bi-cultural harmony”. \nThe paintings are an aligned interplay between dynamism and stillness. Through a range of compelling and aesthetically dynamic artworks\, Alyamani seeks to onboard spectators on her journey of exploration with colour. As the artist describes it\, “dancing with my paintbrush.” Whether it be a contrast or solidarity between two colours or a blend of format  – Alyamani’s dual culturalism shines through in multiple formats. For her\, these works are personal expressions of being at the core of the beating heart of Saudi and British cultures; their music\, art\, heritage and most importantly\, the people—an extension of her everyday life\, friendships and experiences. Alyamani  has received accolades from society for her active contribution to promote Saudi art globally. She is also a Saudi British Society Trustee. \nAlyamani believes Connaught Village is the “perfect location for all who appreciate a rich heritage\, a friendly\, close community and an appreciation of fine art and style.” The exhibition is free to attend.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:The Gentle Vibration of Things
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nPaint Talk Presents\, \n\n\nThe Gentle Vibration of Things\, \n\n\nAn exhibition of paintings by Alice Macdonald\, \n  \n\n\nThe Gentle Vibration of Things\, brings together a series of paintings made over the last year and a selection of watercolours displayed under glass. The paintings are bound by portraits\, representations of friends\, family\, and strangers\, painted from drawings and memory. \n\n\nThe portraits recorded in a sketchbook\, have been pulled into a process of translation and reconfiguration\, from pencil on paper\, to watercolour studies\, onto canvas wherein distemper has been poured. Out of the stains\, the drawn and studied iterations are re-found. Whether waiting\, drinking a glass of wine\, preoccupied reading or cutting pears\, those portrayed are pulled from reality and memory with precision\, but recast in a space where colour\, pattern and physical form become dreamlike. The painted space throughout the collection of works is orchestral in its ability to synthesise translucent pigment\, drawn and collaged elements interwoven and overlapped\, with oil employed in a versatile and tactile manner. \n\n\nDaylight and moonlight are each cast as they are\, much larger than life. Vast beams of light reach from the moon\, their limbs like those of a spider\, reach around a solitary figure. Two hundred and forty thousand miles of light reach into the garden with grace and ease\, penetrating the night. The Ridgeway\, an ancient trackway considered Britain’s oldest road\, is prominent within The Gentle Vibration of Things. A vast landscape with rolling fields and woodlands is splintered and fractured by sunlight\, the rays slicing through the sky and land. Soft light in abundance\, this ancient road is trodden on by the artist and her mother\, walking directly toward the viewer\, out of the painting. They are only partially visible\, the tops of their heads barely present in a sea of light\, clouds and land. \n\n\nWhether intimate moments shared\, snapshots of pleasure in open waters\, the portrayal of loss and grief\, the passing from one world to the next\, the breadth of feeling enclosed in this body of work leads the viewer through the elation of reconnection after two years of frequent isolation\, to moments of wonder and optimism. Light flutters and scurries throughout the show\, reflections kissing swaying tides\, floral porcelain lies upon subdued tablecloths\, flesh is depicted in pigment held in a range of binders. The nuanced treatment of materiality\, drawing\, and feeling conjures a sense of tranquillity\, a place where time slows and cuttings of geraniums flourish. \n\n\nAlice Macdonald is a painter based in London\, she undertook her Undergraduate at Falmouth University and completed the Postgraduate Drawing Year at The Royal Drawing School. Residencies include the Drawing Marathon at Rhode Island School of Design\, Dumfries House and India Institute of Fine Arts in Modinagar.
