SUMMARY:Past and Present Tense
DESCRIPTION:“He who controls the present\, controls the past. He who controls the past\, controls the future.”\nGeorge Orwell \nArt invites us to take a fresh look at historic moments\, inspires reflections on our role in the world as well as contemplation’s on what is yet to come. \nThis exhibition brings together artists working across a breadth of disciplines and materials who apply the theme of past and present tense to ideas of time and place\, change and decay\, nostalgia and hope. \nWhether informed by personal experience\, directly responding to the memories held within the venue’s ancient walls\, or following more abstract concepts\, the works on show provide an interpretation of the world around us\, framed by the artists’ imagination. \nAn invitation to take a break from out of control news and political realities.

SUMMARY:Sharon Drew – Immersion
DESCRIPTION:Sharon Drew has been invited to exhibit her abstract paintings at William Road Gallery. By recreating the sensation of light\, colour\, rhythm and movement Drew finds in landscape\, her work brings a visceral element to the gallery setting. \nThis new series includes large-scale paintings and captures the essence of visits to urban and coastal shorelines. Building up opaque and translucent layers with repetitive and rhythmic gestures she emulates the constant fluctuations of nature. \nIn contrast to the measured and calculated methods of the architects whose practice houses the gallery\, Drew’s works result from a process of only just controlling the paint\, of letting the material lead the way. The desire is to be spontaneous and completely in the moment\, and to share this sense of immersion with the viewer. \n  \nMondays-Fridays

SUMMARY:Cyan.rar
DESCRIPTION:cyan.rar \n22nd Nov – 29th Nov \nPrivate View 22nd November 7 – 9 pm \nIslington Arts Factory // London \n#CyanRar #IslingtonArtsFactory \nart.ists\nKo ‘Carol’ Huai-Ching\, Youngha Kim\, Aisling Browne\, Natasha Moody\, Robbie Di Vito\, AyshiaTaskin\, Rachel Innes \nSpecific colours have come to be imbued with symbols\, meaning and histories while equally contributing\, through their applications\, to contemporary life. Therefore\, for Cyan.rar\, seven emerging artists coagulate to create work through the investigation of the colour cyan and the significance it has played in cultural\, literacy\, symbolic and internal topics. \nThe colour cyan is of a cosmopolitan greenish-blue tone and known by a variety of names; turquoise\, electric blue\, aqua and teal. The cyanic shade\, induced through illumination\, vividly expresses itself through the principal wavelength of between 490–520 nm (nanometres). A colour which captivatingly exists within a limonoid state amid green and blue hues. Along with magenta\, black and yellow\, cyan is included within the ‘primary colour’ schemata. The technical side of the colour cyan is its use\, as an additive colour\, within the RGB classification – a system which produces all colours viewed on a computer or television display. The naissance of cyan occurs through a mixture of equal amounts of green and blue light. \nThe Cyan.rar exhibition realises a congregation of artworks where participating artists grapple with concepts surrounding the colour cyan. The exhibition will host print-based\, paintings and sculptural works exploring an array of subject matter from how the colour expressed in nature\, culture and theology to the focus on the .rar aspect and the investigation of the subconscious mind through the excavation of layers ‘zipped’ within the human consciousness.

SUMMARY:Shaping Duality
DESCRIPTION:Shaping Duality explores the mysterious way our minds are able to hold two opposing ideas or beliefs. The exhibition proposes an in depth exploration of the artist’s creative process and thinking. The symbolistic artworks that Dragos presents encapsulate the constant battle between the antithetical concepts of Power – Fragility\, Ethereal – Carnal\, Shelter – Capture\, Inside – Outside\, Freedom – Enchainment. \nThe curatorial concept of the show is shaped by the governing theme of duality. Hence\, both floors inside the space are representative of the extremes that built the antithetical pair of “Power and Fragility”. Upon entering the gallery\, the public can notice the carnal\, fleshy tones that dominate Dragos’s works. On the ground floor the artist uses the motif of hands as the mediator between inner self and external space. In contrast\, the basement establishes an ethereal atmosphere. The room carries the viewer into a more sonic place through the audio installation that explains the artist’s creative thinking\, studio practice and inspirational triggers. Dragos explores the fragility of life using symbolism to approach primordial themes. Additionally\, the artist breaks the chains of duality by introducing a series of triptychs drifting the exhibition away from the domination of the number two and placing it under the number three. Finally\, the show manages to reshape duality by revealing the junction between different states of mind. \nDragos Burlacu is a Romanian artist who uses a wide range of styles and media to create works that bind the abstract and figurative. His body of work is the epitome of self exploration through the creative process and an analysis of the world that surrounds us. The artist’s duality and flexibility are mirrored in his creations and the large variety of themes he approaches. The only constant in Dragos’s creative thinking is change.

SUMMARY:Gathering by Nengi Omuku – Art Exhibition in London
DESCRIPTION:Gathering by Nengi Omuku – Art Exhibition in London\n\n\n\nA group of people sit with their backs to the viewer while in the distance a crowd of spectral figures form a wall of bodies that blends into the beige background. This haunting\, textural painting\, The Sit Down by Nengi Omuku\, depicts a non-violent protest\, which was originally inspired by three separate instances of injustice in the artist’s home country of Nigeria\, but the work gains new significance in the light of the tragic events currently unfolding in Lagos as peaceful protesters continue to be met with brutality. Omuku’s latest body of work marks a shift in the artist’s focus from the individual to the collective body and communal existence. Painted onto panels of a traditional Nigerian fabric known as Sanyan\, the artworks negotiate the complexities of identity and belonging in relation to gender\, race and cultural heritage. The artist’s solo show entitled Gathering at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s London Bridge space brings together a collection of highly atmospheric and emotive scenes filled with urgency and longing. \n\n\n\nThe majority of Omuku’s latest artworks were inspired by local events in Lagos and the corresponding imagery circulated by the press. The powerful imagery of The Sit Down\, for example\, came in response to scenes of mass unemployment that ensued following the government ban on motorcycles and tricycles (the local form of public transport); the devastating collapse of a school building near the artist’s studio that buried young children and for which no-one was held accountable; and the billions of Naira (Nigerian currency) that were allegedly dispensed by the government during the pandemic\, but which never made it to the people who needed it most. However\, the charged\, traumatic and affecting scenes that comprise this body of work appear now as the uncanny foreshadowings of the current protests against a corrupt branch of the Nigerian police force known as SARS\, which was established in 1992 to combat armed robbery but instead became the perpetrator of widespread illegal activities. Most recently\, the group captured and killed a Nigerian civilian leading to a series of high-profile peaceful protests in the central commercial district of Lagos. On Tuesday 20th October\, a member of the government instructed the electricity at a major protest site to be turned off and announced a state wide curfew\, but many of the protesters remained in solidarity to their cause. News footage shows these people sitting peacefully\, waving the Nigerian flag and singing the national anthem. The Nigerian military were called in and opened fire at the site\, injuring and killing civilians. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition’s title piece Gathering echoes the scenes of real people carrying and mourning the bodies of those that they have lost whilst also drawing our attention to the multiple connotations of the word itself\, the different ways in which we come together as well as the potential power and danger. Though a few portraits are included in the exhibition\, the majority of the artworks specifically depict the act of ‘gathering’ or coming together as a collective\, but nevertheless\, a strong sense of absence pervades. Indeed\, many of the paintings were created in lockdown\, a period in which the artist was largely cut off from human interaction. As with all of her compositions\, she built her scenes from a digital collage of her source imagery\, specifically looking for photographs of groups of people in Nigeria and exploring new ways of coming together during the pandemic. Though the idea of a collective is suggestive of unity\, strength and belonging\, Omuku’s moody skies and faceless figures also imbue the works with a sense of fragility and transience. In one of the most striking paintings entitled Technicolour Protest\, for example\, a man stands at the forefront\, his arm raised and fist clenched in a moment of desperation\, paint pouring from his limbs\, whilst once again\, the crowd stands passively watching the action unfold. This tension between movement and stillness\, sound and silence\, unity and disparity creates an extraordinary atmosphere of unease that permeates this whole body of work. \n\n\n\nAdding another layer of physicality to the artworks\, Omuku paints on a Nigerian fabric known as Sanyan. Traditionally\, Sanyan was made from wild silk\, obtained from the cocoons of moths and spun into a thick\, rough fibre before being woven together to make fabric for traditional attire. Sanyan was typically worn by wealthy individuals in precolonial western Nigeria\, and often owners would sign the fabric as its ownership was a symbol of prestige. Although production of this silk cloth has fallen into decline\, the fabric is still woven in certain circles using industrial cotton as a substitute. Omuku sources her material from vintage markets in an attempt to reclaim the historical significance of the cloth as well as a lost sense of pride in craftsmanship. To create her canvases\, she stitches several strips together\, resulting in a unique\, textured surface dotted with tiny holes and imbued with a strong sense of place that relates specifically to cultural heritage and identity\, which are key themes in her practice. The painting entitled Remorse\, Stolen Knickers\, for example\, reflects on a Nigerian tradition in which the older women in a community would protest naked on the streets at times of extreme chaos or disaster. In the foreground of the artwork the two men are drawn from a real life newspaper photograph of police detaining men who had stolen women’s underwear\, but the artist has deliberately replaced the police presence with women who are peacefully seeking their own justice by using the powerful symbolism of their bodies. \n\n\n\nThis also links to Omuku’s perception of the body ‘as a site or an event centre’ that is constantly changing in response to individual and collective experiences. ‘I’ve always thought about different ways to talk about the body as multilayered as opposed to the singularity of what you see. I think about how you paint a mental space in response to what is happening within and around the body\,’ explained the artist. As a result\, Omuku deliberately obscures the faces of her figures to avoid singularity\, instead seeking to create a sense of relatability that appeals to our shared physicality and more specifically in these most recent works\, to the body of the collective. In earlier paintings\, the artist employed colour as a way of further abstracting her figurative forms\, suggesting a more fluid and fluctuating relationship between the body\, emotion and space. Whilst this sense of fluidity remains visible in the swirling movement of the brush strokes across her figures’ limbs\, these latest works move away from neutralised emotional spaces to politicised bodies and scenes that are culturally and socially specific. The new\, darker tones of her figures and backgrounds first developed in response to the natural\, rich brown colour of Sanyan\, were also influenced by the photographs of Lagos which showed black bodies in her local environment. However\, the works also resonate on a global level\, bringing issues of race and brutality more explicitly to the forefront. \n\n\n\nGathering is at once a powerful expression of the troubling present moment and a poignant longing for a time when we will gather not in sadness or distress\, but in happiness and celebration; a time when we are able to communicate not through violence\, but peacefully\, through our innate\, shared humanity.

SUMMARY:The Need for Roots with Christiane Pooley
DESCRIPTION:Expansive\, blue-tinted landscapes appear profoundly empty or otherwise\, occupied by faceless figures and fractured images that slide across the canvas\, their colours and edges fading into one another. These are the paintings of Christiane Pooley whose practice explores place as both a physical environment and an emotional state that transcends time and geographical boundaries. For her first solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, the Chilean artist presents a breathtaking new body of work\, entitled The Need for Roots\, that quietly contemplates the complexities of origin and belonging. \nThe exhibition borrows its title from French philosopher Simone Weil’s book of the same name in which she states\, ‘A human being has roots by virtue of his real\, active and natural participation in the life of a community which preserves in living shape certain particular treasures of the past and certain particular expectations for the future.’ This definition resonates with Pooley on a personal level as she was born and grew up in Araucanía\, a region in southern Chile that was incorporated into the national territory by means of military occupation and colonisation in the late 19th century. Since then\, there has been a continuing conflict between the original inhabitants (who were forcibly assimilated to a newly-built Chilean identity) and the settlers\, provoking complex discourse around identity\, land ownership and belonging. Whilst the artist is now based in Paris\, the conflict has had direct and devastating repercussions on herself and her family. As Chileans that settled in the region (Pooley is 5th generation)\, their right to live in or identify with the area is now being challenged by certain communities on the grounds of ownership\, which are historically founded\, but ignore the deeply-embedded emotional connections to place and the nuances of how identity is formed over time. The situation is further exacerbated by governmental indifference\, resulting in a stalemate. ‘The conflict is affecting people who did not cause the problem\, but are also unable to solve it\,’ says Pooley. \nThis is inevitably a difficult discourse to enter into\, but Pooley’s work is non-confrontational; she chooses an intimate lens\, mixing memories with archival images to create poetic\, liminal spaces and scenes that teeter on the edge of reality and dream. ‘I’m interested in how some memories rise up to the surface in the present and other events from the past are erased\, and how history repeats itself from different perspectives. It’s like the act of painting\, you build layers on the surface\, and in the process parts are erased or covered\,’ she says. ‘Painting recalls the passing of time.’ The layers on Pooley’s canvas are visible through broad\, smooth\, sweeping brush strokes and areas of translucency that simultaneously conceal and reveal the images ‘hidden’ beneath. \nIn this latest series of paintings\, water is a recurring element – literally in depictions of lakes and waterfalls\, but also\, as a felt presence through the use of different shades of blue – as is sunlight\, which adds a certain tenderness to the scenes\, but these are by no means works of romanticism or nostalgia. There’s a profound sense of stillness that suggests a more complex balance of longing and detachment\, and at times\, the brush strokes enact a form of erasure that hints at violence. One of the most arresting paintings\, for example\, depicts a little girl in a blue dress whose head has been wiped away by dark paint while the surrounding landscape is blurred at the edges\, seemingly under threat of disappearing entirely. Other works appear more concrete on a first glance\, but an underlying tension continues to destabilise and complicate the image. This is perhaps most strongly felt in the variations of a painting of a road\, delineated by a bright\, straight yellow line that directs the gaze towards a lake and mountains in the distance. Each variation prioritises different details almost as if we are viewing the same setting at different times of the day\, and yet\, as the perspective changes\, we become unsure which version to believe\, or whether there even is an objective truth. In the repetition of this image and others\, there is something almost painful\, akin to the repetition of trauma\, that coexists with a haunting kind of beauty. \nIn the act of image making or representation\, the artist inevitably attempts a process of clarification or permanence\, but at the same time\, her approach is tentative and doubtful. As images appear\, and are wiped away\, we are left with exquisite sediments\, the nuances and ephemerality of human experience.

SUMMARY:“Ariel” by Louis Bennett - Paintings Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Vividly rendered characters appear against a collage of painted scenes that contrast romantic\, pastoral imagery and bright\, cartoonesque colours with crumbling gothic architecture and an underlying sense of foreboding. This latest collection of work by Lancashire-born\, London-based artist Louis Bennett is partly inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest’s wild landscapes and heightened drama and explores the powerful yet destabilising experience of falling in love. Ariel\, the artist’s second solo show with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, marks a newfound optimism expressed in the flushed faces and youthfulness of the figures depicted. Yet\, the splicing of the scenes suggests pervading anxiety and unease. In this way\, the works can be understood as expressions of fraught psychological states that are deeply personal and register the wider complexities of human existence. \nBennett’s process typically begins with collecting found imagery and ephemeral materials that provide visual or atmospheric inspiration. For this latest exhibition\, the artist cites The Tempest as a key influence. Some of the paintings allude to the play’s desolate maritime setting. In contrast\, others directly reference Ariel’s character\, who\, in Shakespeare’s narrative\, is a magical spirit. Still\, the name holds deeper significance for the artist as it is also the name of his partner and a homophone of the word ‘aerial’. ‘The feeling of being airborne\, floating above the ground\, is how this time has felt\, for me\, meeting someone who feels otherworldly in a historical moment where we all feel completely untethered from any sense of normality and stability\,’ he explains. ‘One of the parts of The Tempest that really touched me is the idea of Prospero being a character in exile\, longing for a lost home\, seeking to have former glory restored to him. In deepest lockdown isolation\, I felt like this before my own Ariel arrived to save me from this feeling.’ \nBennett also found himself drawn to the aesthetic of old French magazines\, specifically the stylised fashion shoots of children posed in surreal scenarios that envision romantic cliches. While the artist’s previous paintings typically focused on the suffering of the older generations rendered in bleached\, ghoulish hues\, many of these latest works depict children with round\, reddened cheeks dressed in dated clothing that further emphasises the notion of nostalgia and innocence. In the painting entitled Komm\, Gib Mir Deine Hand (which references the German version of the Beatles song ‘I want to hold your hand’ )\, a young girl is whispering something into a boy’s ear against the backdrop of a harbour at sunset. While the painting is cropped at waist height\, an image exploding out of the boy’s head shows us not only that they’re holding hands but also that this moment of intimate physical connection is the overriding focus of his attention. \nThis technique of splicing images recalls the graphic style of comic books and Pop art. Still\, for Bennett\, it’s also a way of visualising the character’s mental state and the familiar experience of being in one place while your mind is in another. The painting Can’t Stop Thinking About It envisions another young boy\, but this time he’s very clearly consumed by his thoughts. He is standing in a verdant green park but gazing off to the side of the canvas\, mentally seeing an image of a man and woman embracing. While the narrative is intentionally left ambiguous\, the romantic scene in which the couple appears is unsettled by the red\, stormy sky in the distance\, and the idyllic atmosphere of boy’s present is threatened by the looming presence of disembodied\, blue hands\, one of which is brandishing a hooked knife. \n‘Some of the paintings in the show tackle mental health\, particularly the experience of OCD\, which I suffer with\,’ says the artist. ‘OCD and love are very intertwined for me\, and I think this is to do with a feeling of intensity and the extremity of emotions.’ This is most clearly referenced in the piece entitled Overcoming OCD in 12 Easy Steps\, in which a little boy and girl are seated at the dining room table. At the same time\, a bell clangs above the boy’s head\, but feelings of detachment and anxiety are also explored in other paintings. O! Solitude! (After Purcell)\, for example\, it is strikingly still and subdued compared to the dynamic\, overlapping imagery of the other works. It is named after a vocal piece by the composer Henry Purcell and depicts a woman sitting on the edge of an archway\, looking out over green rolling hills. Like many of the works in this exhibition\, the scene is consciously romantic\, drawing on the tropes of the pastoral genre to suggest an idyll. Yet\, as emphasised by the title\, it’s also an expression of a kind of loneliness that we all feel due to our inability to share our internal experience with another person. \nHowever\, the experience of love is envisioned by Bennett as both transformative and elevating. For example\, the painting Approach Me\, My Ariel directly references The Tempest’s narrative in which Ariel’s character represents kindness and magic\, and here\, the artist imagines ‘Prospero – embittered and trapped before being touched and humanised by the energetic sprite he commands.’ Here\, Prospero’s transformation is suggested by the return of colour to his face\, while a ruined\, gothic church looms behind him as a symbol of the past. Still\, wider notions of liberation resonate throughout the exhibition. For example\, in the artwork It Was Written\, a man stands at the end of an empty\, arched corridor\, dressed in a workman’s clothes. While he is confined to the left-hand side of the canvas\, he is holding a half-painted canvas that connects his cold\, archaic world with a scene of romance and a smaller image of a ruined castle. In this way\, art or creativity becomes synonymous with love as a unifying force and a gateway to new beginnings.

SUMMARY:D’Stassi Art Presents Shipwreck: New Work by Peter Opheim - Free Exhibition in London
DESCRIPTION:Free Exhibition in London – D’Stassi Art is pleased to present Shipwreck\, a solo exhibition of new oil and watercolour paintings by Peter Opheim \nD’Stassi Art is pleased to present Shipwreck\, a solo exhibition of new oil and watercolour paintings by Peter Opheim. Known for his large-scale renderings of imaginative and richly coloured creatures\, Shipwreck showcases 43 recent works in Opheim’s signature style with a new emphasis on narrative elements that cohere the pieces together and open new avenues in his practice. The exhibition will be transformed into an overgrown\, supernaturally lit terrain inspired by the scene depicted in the painting the exhibition takes its name from. Sprawling vines and life-sized trees surround Opheims unusual and impossible characters\, offering a surprising exploration of the tragedy and beauty of humanity. Shipwreck will be on view from September 10\, 2021\, to October 7th\, 2021\, by appointment only. \nOpheim began his career in abstraction before shifting to the bold-faced\, figurative style that allowed him to explore the narrative potential. For his first London solo exhibition\, the artist will present a body of work that imagines bulbous characters that appear at once familiar and foreign\, endearing and monstrous\, approachable and bizarre. In their soft\, sculptural forms\, the figures take on certain aspects of a normal human condition without being quite human or proffering an explicit narrative. \nThe painting Shipwreck depicts a mythical crew of Opheim’s characters thrown from a broken ship; their journey is disrupted\, their fate uncertain\, yet they appear composed and confident in their ability to calm the chaos. Serving as a jumping-off point for the exhibition\, this collection of work tells a story of navigating a foreign land\, unexpected challenges\, and a cast of characters\, including cannibals\, saints\, time travellers\, and even a fire crew. “Mountaineers (Survival Ax)” depicts two of these creatures — one deerlike with antlers\, the other resembling a teddy bear— painted in dark\, stormy colours; they appear lost in the wilderness\, equipped only with a candle and an axe. Altogether\, the images suggest resilience and tolerance in the face of the unknown. \nThe titles of the pieces occasionally situate and often personalise Opheim’s surreal characters\, with recognisable names like “Addison\,” “Colby\,” and “Landon\,” or by alluding to broader themes of life and loss\, such as “Saint (Those We Love Become Us).” In this way\, the characters act as mirrors for internal reflection and personal interpretation\, depicting a range of emotions simultaneously within us. By presenting characters that are familiar enough to be relatable yet new enough to feel fresh and intriguing\, Opheim’s figures probe our personal and political intricacies. \nEach character is modelled after a three-dimensional reference sculpture created by Opheim\, giving the images a physical\, almost tactile quality. The pieces can take weeks\, if not a month or two\, to complete from conception to the final product. However\, the artist welcomes the element of surprise into his practice\, with each painting presenting a new challenge for Opheim as he seeks out new processes to try and new characters to bring to life. Shipwreck will be on view from September 10\, 2021\, to October 7th\, 2021\, by appointment only.

SUMMARY:Dor Beetles Slumbering at Dusk - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Private View: Saturday 16th of October from 12-6 pm \nLondon (Wandsworth) \nTall stems of flowers\, grass and reeds tower against the sky as soft sunlight streams through their leaves. Norwegian artist Vibeke Slyngstad’s exquisitely rendered paintings take the perspective of a small child playing in the earth\, running through fields\, wading through streams\, squinting into the sun. However\, these are not works of nostalgia; the beauty Slyngstad depicts is fragile and wavering just as the landscapes themselves are transitional\, caught between the rural and the urban\, the land and the sea. Instead\, Dor Beetles Slumbering at Dusk\, the artist’s solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery London\, takes these rugged\, mysterious edgelands as a way of exploring complex psychological states. \nSlyngstad works at a slow\, meditative pace\, precisely rendering each image using a single layer of paint so that the finished surface has a delicate\, almost translucent quality\, reflecting more expansive notions of liminality. Although the compositions are inspired by the artist’s photographs of real-life encounters with nature\, the vivid hues and magnified perspective of the plants against a blank\, white sky suggest a heightened view or dreamlike state rather than any specific geographical location. Meanwhile\, Slyngstad’s plays with materiality to evoke a fluctuating sense of perception\, almost as if we are dipping in and out of consciousness. From a distance\, the exacting details\, blinding bursts of light and contrast between sharpened and blurred edges\, which mimic the flash and zoom of a camera\, create a stunning impression of photorealism. Still\, on closer inspection\, the artist’s presence becomes visible through delicate\, irregular brushstrokes and subtle imperfections where the colours bleed out of the lines or the paint streaks. “It is essential to me that the works have a humanity and honesty about them\,” says the artist. “The viewer can see every mark.” \nAt the same time\, the visible fragility of the work creates a slight air of tension or perhaps\, even anxiety. This is probably most keenly felt in the series of paintings entitled Shuafat\, named after a predominantly Palestinian neighbourhood in East Jerusalem. The artist encountered a sizeable vacant area of urban land\, overgrown with flowers and weeds breaking through the cracks in the concrete. Slyngstad was struck by the beauty and persistence of nature against a backdrop of conflict and hardship and continues to return the same imagery\, playing with the crop and scale to create fresh interpretations. In this exhibition\, the landscape is depicted at a large scale\, taking on an almost hyperrealism that heightens both a sense of drama and vitality. Meanwhile\, the artist deliberately chooses to work in a bright colour palette to convey a feeling of optimism that relates to notions of renewal and rebirth as enacted by the natural life cycle. Each painting offers a window into a microcosmic world that captures the harmonious relationship between deterioration (the drooping white petals of the daisies) and growth (the lush green foliage)\, whilst the works’ materiality the intensity of detail creates an odd\, pervading sense of unease. \nThese ideas are further explored in the series Sønstegård\, named after an area of protected wetlands in Norway close to Oslo\, where the artist is based. These paintings depict a sparser landscape of reeds and grass growing on the banks of a body of water. Rendered in dark tones of purple\, pink and red\, they evoke the cusp of nightfall\, once again playing with notions of transition and perhaps\, reflecting the experience of memory as a wavering psychological place that’s continually in the process of fading. Like the landscape of Shuafat\, we find ourselves simultaneously drawn in by the beauty and held at a taut distance. \nThe exhibition’s title reflects this layered perceptual experience by evoking the poetic image of a beetle slumbering in the undergrowth\, caught between a state of sleep and wakefulness as the day transitions into the night. Although the beetle is not depicted in any of the paintings\, we can perhaps read it as a metaphor for ourselves\, the viewers\, drawn deep into Slyngstad’s vivid\, intricate worlds.

SUMMARY:'Be A Part Of The Art' Collaborative Workshop With Artist In Residence Sam Wagner
DESCRIPTION:Join Artist in Residence Sam Wagner in creating a piece of artwork for his final show. As this residency focuses on Reemergence and New Norms\, Sam would like to hear what these themes mean to others. First\, participants will choose a shape and colour that best represents themselves and their personal experience. Then we will each write something they have learned about themselves over the past two years. Profiles and stories will remain anonymous to enable participants to be as truthful as possible about their experiences. Finally\, Sam will bring these shapes together to create a unified work of art that speaks to common themes and experiences expressed by participants. This collaborative piece will be displayed at the show opening on March 17th. \nSam Wagner is part of the ever-changing programme of artists in residence at Bankside Hotel’s maker’s studio. Bankside provides a permanent creative space and works with curators Contemporary Collective who champion up-and-coming creatives\, covering a wide range of disciplines including design\, painting\, sculpture\, film\, drawing\, printmaking\, installation\, new media and photography. Bankside and ArtYard Bar & Kitchen guests can watch artists practice their creative expertise and take on an informative and artistic journey.

SUMMARY:The Gentle Vibration of Things
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\nPaint Talk Presents\, \n\n\nThe Gentle Vibration of Things\, \n\n\nAn exhibition of paintings by Alice Macdonald\, \n  \n\n\nThe Gentle Vibration of Things\, brings together a series of paintings made over the last year and a selection of watercolours displayed under glass. The paintings are bound by portraits\, representations of friends\, family\, and strangers\, painted from drawings and memory. \n\n\nThe portraits recorded in a sketchbook\, have been pulled into a process of translation and reconfiguration\, from pencil on paper\, to watercolour studies\, onto canvas wherein distemper has been poured. Out of the stains\, the drawn and studied iterations are re-found. Whether waiting\, drinking a glass of wine\, preoccupied reading or cutting pears\, those portrayed are pulled from reality and memory with precision\, but recast in a space where colour\, pattern and physical form become dreamlike. The painted space throughout the collection of works is orchestral in its ability to synthesise translucent pigment\, drawn and collaged elements interwoven and overlapped\, with oil employed in a versatile and tactile manner. \n\n\nDaylight and moonlight are each cast as they are\, much larger than life. Vast beams of light reach from the moon\, their limbs like those of a spider\, reach around a solitary figure. Two hundred and forty thousand miles of light reach into the garden with grace and ease\, penetrating the night. The Ridgeway\, an ancient trackway considered Britain’s oldest road\, is prominent within The Gentle Vibration of Things. A vast landscape with rolling fields and woodlands is splintered and fractured by sunlight\, the rays slicing through the sky and land. Soft light in abundance\, this ancient road is trodden on by the artist and her mother\, walking directly toward the viewer\, out of the painting. They are only partially visible\, the tops of their heads barely present in a sea of light\, clouds and land. \n\n\nWhether intimate moments shared\, snapshots of pleasure in open waters\, the portrayal of loss and grief\, the passing from one world to the next\, the breadth of feeling enclosed in this body of work leads the viewer through the elation of reconnection after two years of frequent isolation\, to moments of wonder and optimism. Light flutters and scurries throughout the show\, reflections kissing swaying tides\, floral porcelain lies upon subdued tablecloths\, flesh is depicted in pigment held in a range of binders. The nuanced treatment of materiality\, drawing\, and feeling conjures a sense of tranquillity\, a place where time slows and cuttings of geraniums flourish. \n\n\nAlice Macdonald is a painter based in London\, she undertook her Undergraduate at Falmouth University and completed the Postgraduate Drawing Year at The Royal Drawing School. Residencies include the Drawing Marathon at Rhode Island School of Design\, Dumfries House and India Institute of Fine Arts in Modinagar. SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:Abstract artist Intisar Alyamani launches her solo exhibition in Connaught Village
DESCRIPTION:Abstract artist Intisar Alyamani is launching her second solo exhibition of this year in Connaught Village on 23rd September.  \nIntisar Alyamani is a Goldsmiths taught artist based in London and her exhibition\, Harmony\,  will be open from 23 September to 17 October 2022 at 12 Connaught Street\, Connaught Village\, London W2. \nHarmony is a series of paintings of what the artist refers to as an extension and a portal into her experience of “bi-cultural harmony”. \nThe paintings are an aligned interplay between dynamism and stillness. Through a range of compelling and aesthetically dynamic artworks\, Alyamani seeks to onboard spectators on her journey of exploration with colour. As the artist describes it\, “dancing with my paintbrush.” Whether it be a contrast or solidarity between two colours or a blend of format  – Alyamani’s dual culturalism shines through in multiple formats. For her\, these works are personal expressions of being at the core of the beating heart of Saudi and British cultures; their music\, art\, heritage and most importantly\, the people—an extension of her everyday life\, friendships and experiences. Alyamani  has received accolades from society for her active contribution to promote Saudi art globally. She is also a Saudi British Society Trustee. \nAlyamani believes Connaught Village is the “perfect location for all who appreciate a rich heritage\, a friendly\, close community and an appreciation of fine art and style.” The exhibition is free to attend.

SUMMARY:Let's talk about you and me - Rebecca Brodskis
DESCRIPTION:Private View: Thursday\, 3rd of November\, 6:30-9 pm(London Bridge). \n \nWide-eyed\, solemn figures stare out at the viewer from brightly coloured backgrounds\, at once bold and spectral\, familiar and strange. While Rebecca Brodskis’ previous paintings were based largely on memories of friends or the lingering images of people she passed on the street\, these latest portraits are drawn entirely from her imagination\, creating a deeper sense of interiority. Let’s talk about you and me; the artist’s fourth solo exhibition with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery contemplates how we modify our behaviour to align with social expectations and connect with others while sometimes repressing parts of ourselves. \n \nBrodskis’ portraits result from the slow\, meditative process of oil painting which requires the artist to wait for one layer of paint to dry before she can apply the next. As such\, her compositions are precise and graphical in style. Each line is carefully delineated so that as you approach the canvas\, the figures are abstracted into shapes\, floating within a decontextualised\, surreal space. Within this space\, social and visual hierarchies are stripped away\, and our perspective is refocused on colour and gesture. However\, this latest body of work is unusual in that it shares a warm colour palette of oranges\, reds\, pinks and yellows\, which evokes the idea of an internal\, bodily or even womb-like space. At times\, this space seems to indicate emotional harmony\, while at others\, it highlights a disconnect between the external and internal self. In the painting Henrietta\, for example\, the female figure cuts a somewhat severe silhouette\, gazing blanking into the distance. At the same time\, the space that surrounds her is filled with a vivid shade of red\, perhaps hinting at some suppressed emotion. The large-scale diptych titled Dinner Party depicts a group of people gathered around a table\, though instead of engaging with one another\, they appear almost as if they are self-consciously posing for the viewer. Meanwhile\, the cool lilac-coloured background adds to the sense of detachment.\n \nOther works play with ideas of mirroring and reflection to explore how we form connections. In the paintings Safran and Yacine\, the figures almost melt into their backdrops while also appearing in dialogue with one another: their clothing\, hair\, and eyes reflect the same golden orange hues. The clothing and body language of the figures in Another Conversation is similarly synchronised. Though the figures here share the same canvas\, they remain contained within their own spaces\, separated by a thin border that cuts down the centre of the image with visibly defined ridges. However\, there is still a sense of tenderness: their eyes meet across the gap\, and their arms cross the border to touch at the fingertips.\n \nIn a series of three paintings titled Secret #1\, Secret #2\, and The Revelation\, Brodskis creates a narrative around self-perception. In both Secret #1 and Secret #2\, a veiled figure is seated on a chair\, with her back to us\, gazing into a mirror. In both reflections\, the figure is lifting a finger to their lips\, gesturing at the idea of something hidden or unspoken: in Secret #1\, the figure’s face is\, and their hand is black; in Secret #2\, it’s the opposite. The Revelation depicts the same setting; however\, there is no woman in the chair\, only the reflection in which the woman appears half white\, half black\, as if the different parts of her have combined. ‘It’s as if she’s left the real world and jumped inside herself\,’ Brodskis says\, ‘which is sort of what painting does for me. It’s a kind of therapy or meditation.’\n \n\n\nSimilarly\, the image’s stillness\, the canvas’s smooth surface\, the balance of shapes and the rich colour tones invite a deep state of contemplation. Though each portrait possesses its own emotional resonance and tension\, they form a crowd of faces that we are invited to step into and create our own conversations.

SUMMARY:Richard Smith: Intersections
DESCRIPTION:Flowers Gallery is delighted to present an exhibition of works by British artist Richard Smith CBE (1931 – 2016). Recognised as one of the most influential painters of his generation\, Smith’s work of five decades evades precise categorisation\, with an expansive abstract painterly style very much his own. \nThe exhibition coincides with the launch of a major new publication Richard Smith: Artworks 1954-2013\, with essays by David Alan Mellor\, Chris Stephens\, Alex Massouras and Martin Harrison. This new study is intended to reignite discourse around this diverse artist\, whose impressive oeuvre is fertile territory for a new reassessment. Also concurrently on view is Richard Smith: Kites at the Edge Art Centre\, University of Bath until 17 December\, 2022. \nThis exhibition presents a survey of works from 1965 to 2009\, focusing on intersections of colour\, form and material construction. Included are a selection of Smith’s critically acclaimed paintings on three dimensional canvases from the 1960s\, including A Whole Year and Half a Day VIII (1966)\, formerly exhibited at his solo exhibition for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1970. During this period Smith created monumental sculptural shaped canvases\, which explored a radical new tension between volume\, colour and surface. In A Whole Year and Half a Day VIII\, the canvas appears to unfurl playfully from the wall\, while in Triptych\, 1965\, three vivid carton-like panels protrude into the space of the gallery\, recalling the bold impact of advertising hoardings. \nOther works take this experimentation with shaped supports in new directions. In works such as Maryland (1972)\, and A Dark Present (1972) horizontal and vertical tapes intersect with the surface of the canvas. Here\, Smith’s interest in the hidden grid-like warp and weft of the canvas is accented by its interwoven construction at an enlarged scale. \nAlso presented are a selection of Smith’s works on paper which provide enriching further insights into the paintings around them. Purple\, Red and Green Intersections (1969) exemplifies the ways in which Smith uses bold colour to delineate forms\, while also employing sculptural strategies such as cuts and folds\, creating a striking sense of depth and structure in their two-dimensional surfaces.
