SUMMARY:Spatial Opera in the Dark CONFESSIONS
DESCRIPTION:Opera “Confessions” was inspired by an interest in spatial electronics\, in particular – the spatial acoustic sound and its impact upon the human imagination. Therefore\, the authors have decided to create a spatial opera in the dark\, focussing on the expansion of possibilities offered by the acoustic surroundings. The Christian idea of the seven deadly sins serves as the basis for the libretto. \nThe seven parts of the “Confessions” are concerned with the seven cardinal sins – lust\, gluttony\, greed\, sloth\, wrath\, envy\, pride. “Confessions” combines diverse ideas of creative experiments cherished by the authors for a long time: performance of music in the dark\, incorporation of other human senses (smell\, touch) along with alleged complete removal of the visual aspect. However\, in the opera\, the latter is in fact the most activated factor in the listener’s imagination – through abstract audio images and concrete pre-recorded sounds that produce strong imagery linked to feelings\, sensations or objects. \nIn 2016\, opera “Confessions” was awarded the Golden Stage Cross for the best music\, along with the Musical Nail of The Year award of the Lithuanian Composer’s Union. The opera was performed in various concert halls and theatres and at different festivals in Lithuania\, Sweden\, Germany and the Netherlands. \nConcept and composition – Spatial Opera Company: Jens Hedman (Sweden)\, Rūta Vitkauskaitė (Lithuania / UK)\, Åsa Nordgren (Sweden)\nPerformers: Åsa Nordgren (soprano\, soundobjects)\, Rūta Vitkauskaitė (violin\, soundobjects)\, Jens Hedman (electronics\, soundobjects)\nProducer OPEROMANIJA

SUMMARY:Falvetti: Il Diluvio Universale (The Great Flood)
DESCRIPTION:Il Diluvio Universale | The Great Flood (Messina\, 1682)\nMichelangelo Falvetti (1642 – 1693) \nElements\, ministers of my ire\,\nArm yourselves and avenge me. \nOn 6th June 1682\, a 36-hour deluge in Tortorici near Messina\, Sicily\, caused a flood so strong it tore down its church and all but a few houses\, killing over 600 people. Falvetti’s oratorio\, in which Divine Justice calls on the elements to punish man for its ruin of the earth\, may never have lost its significance\, but neither has it been more pertinent. \nMusica Antica Rotherhithe give Falvetti’s Diluvio Universale its UK premiere\, and one of only a handful of performances since the 17th Century. With anthropomorphised elements competing over the right to end mankind and a gleeful Grim Reaper eyeing victims\, it’s comedy of the darkest kind. But its pivotal message is of hope and redemption\, presented in gorgeous music\, and through a tale – that of Noah’s Ark – that can be understood by all. \nThanks to the generosity of Mr WeeKuang Tai MNA\, all ticket sales from this concert will support the work of UK-based charity Operation Noah in inspiring action on climate change.

SUMMARY:Joshua Sofaer and Wunderbar present Opera Helps Online
DESCRIPTION:In these troubled times can the power of song help us look at a problem in a new way? \n  \nAre you lovesick or facing divorce? \nHas your partner stopped listening to you? \nDo your children disrespect you? \nAre you isolated\, or alone? \nAre you grieving someone’s death? \nAre you worried about the future? \nHave you lost your motivation? \nAre you desperate for a change? \n  \nOpera Helps. \n  \nOpera Helps began as a site-specific art project in which professional opera singers visited people in the comfort of their own homes to sing to them one to one. It harnessed the redemptive power of opera to help with participant’s personal problems. Unlike therapy\, or a trip to the doctor\, Opera Helps doesn’t aim to cure the problem – but participants found the experience deeply affecting and have felt that their private space feels different afterwards. \n  \nOf course\, due to Covid19 restrictions we cannot currently welcome strangers into our homes. Nevertheless\, Opera Helps creator\, internationally renowned artist and passionate opera enthusiast Joshua Sofaer\, has been inspired to work with Wunderbar to adapt the concept for online delivery. They feel that now\, more than ever\, the power of live opera can be a powerful tool to help people through a time of crisis\, a crisis that is causing great stress and difficulty. So\, for Opera Helps Online\, people with a problem are invited to contact Opera Helps to arrange for an online visit from a professional opera singer. \n  \nAnyone can apply for an Opera Helps slot. The simple process is explained at https://operahelps.com If it’s felt that Opera Helps can meet the applicant’s needs\, an appointment will be made. Taking part is an intimate and personal experience. People who have a problem – it can be anything that they find worrying – apply to book a session and arrangements are made for a singer to meet you online. The singer will listen attentively to the participant’s account of their troubles before selecting a suitable aria to sing. Face to face onscreen\, the power of the voice beaming into a domestic setting creates an intense and moving experience. The participant hears music in an unfamiliar way\, encouraging them to listen attentively\, while focusing and reflecting on their individual problem. \n  \nOpera Helps lasts approximately 30 minutes. It is completely free. Those who wish to take part can apply at https://operahelps.com now (or by calling 07943 939395). The project will run until mid October. \n  \n‘Historically opera was always a popular art form\,’ says Joshua. ‘Even 50 years ago hairdressers in Italy would sing arias as they worked. Yet now it is seen as something highbrow\, for the rich and highly educated\, inaccessible to most people. By relocating opera to the home in an online setting and relating it to personal problems I truly think we can introduce people to the music who wouldn’t otherwise have given it a chance.’ \n  \nAs a passionate opera enthusiast\, Joshua found that listening to opera had a direct emotional impact on him. It reached his heart and core very quickly\, had a very positive effect on his mood and he came away refreshed. Joshua sees Opera Helps as a way of introducing new audiences to his passion as well as demonstrating the transformative power of song. \n  \nA pool of 6 experienced professional singers have been specially trained by Joshua (an accredited Relational Dynamics coach) to listen appropriately\, to empathise and to ask simple\, open questions but not to offer advice or counselling. With little or no live work currently available\, Opera Helps is providing unique work opportunities for them. \n  \n  \n‘We know that Opera Helps affects audiences deeply.’ says Ilana Mitchell\, Wunderbar’s Artistic Director. ‘We strive to make work that meets its audiences in the places where they live and work\, so it is a privilege to be adapting Opera Helps to bring an intimate experience to people who might be stuck at home\, living through these challenging\, isolating times. Working with Joshua again is a pleasure too – he’s an outstanding artist producing work which\, on the surface\, appears deceptively simple\, but is transformative\, carrying extraordinary depth and attention to detail.’ \n  \nOpera Helps Online is open for applications now and continues until mid October. https://operahelps.com or call 07943 939395.

SUMMARY:Making History Festival: Indus: The Sound of the Story
DESCRIPTION:Please go to the website Link to book tickets to this event \nIndus: The Sound of the Story practical workshop with Gestalt Arts \nWhether it’s on film or live\, the visuals are only half the story\, and the sound is vital for people who are blind or visually impaired. In this practical session\, Ruth Mariner of Gestalt Arts and a foley artist present their ongoing work with opera in their production Indus\, and explore how live ‘foley’ sound effects and audio-description can heighten the experience for everyone.Bethan performs in Indus \nAlthough the production has been paused due to Covid-19 restrictions\, Indus is an intimate new work and unique approach to integrated access using electronic music\, foley sound effects\, audio-description and the operatic voice. The production explores the relationship between disability and environment through the unlikely story of whale evolution. When a land-mammal begins first to explore the water\, she finds a place where her differences become strengths\, embarking on a journey of self-discovery towards an extraordinary future. \nInfluenced by the theatre-making of Tim Crouch (Adler and Gib)\, Simon McBurney (The Encounter)\, Bryony Kimmings (Fake it Till you Make it)\, and contemporary composer Meredith Monk\, a team of opera/theatre makers join visually impaired singer Bethan Langford to re-examine the relationship between stage and sound\, text\, drawing and representation. In a cocoon-like sound word of soft electronic textures and song\, staging and foley sound effects interact with storytelling (audio-description)\, leaving space for the imagination and creating a powerful and equal experience for visually impaired and sighted audiences.

SUMMARY:Carmen - Opera in London
DESCRIPTION:Carmen – Opera in London\nOpera Loki cuts right to the soulful heart of Bizet’s famous tale of female seduction\, love and the pursuit of freedom. \n\n‘ I think the roars of approval at the end of the evening said it all. It was a cracking performance.’\n‘ …an absolute enchantment in every way\, beautifully sung and acted.’ \n  \n\nFollowing a tour in France\, Opera Loki brings Bizet’s Carmen to UK venues this autumn\, including ‘Upstairs at the Gatehouse’\, Highgate (21st – 24th October)\nThis production is not to be missed! \nDirector Jane Gray has catapulted the traditional 1800s setting of Seville\, Spain\, to the hot and dangerous Mexican/American border in the 1990s. \nPartying with drug lords is the norm\, and violence is frequent. As a result\, it is difficult for young women to earn enough money to live and find genuine love. \nCarmen passionately and intensely holds her own\, refusing to comply with the men who expect her to give up her ideals and beliefs to be with them. \nThe cast includes Australian mezzo-soprano Shakira Tsindos as the driven and determined Carmen. Shakira has recently been accepted as a young artist by National Opera Studio and has a string of international plaudits for her work. Newcomer Andrew Rawlings amazes the audience as Don Jose with a tenor voice described as ‘thrilling and powerful’ and ‘a star in the making’ by audience members. This production\, however\, is a vital ensemble piece with outstanding performances from artists of the future Erin Alexander (Frasquita)\, Hannah Crerar (Mercedes)\, Tim Bagley (Zuniga/Dancairo) and Lars Fischer (Morales/Remendado) and Alice Usher (Michaela) \nCharitable opera company Opera Loki aims to bring performances in English to regional communities within intimate venues\, making their productions ideal for first-time opera goers and seasoned opera lovers alike. In addition\, the organisation provides a much-needed platform for early-career artists and an exciting opportunity for audience members to see the sizzling new talent up close.

SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Ensemble Pro Victoria
DESCRIPTION:LIFEM 2021: Ensemble Pro Victoria\n“I Was Glad: Music of the English Baroque” \nJoint winners of the 2020 Young Ensemble Competition\, Ensemble Pro Victoria\, return for their winners’ recital. \nENSEMBLE PRO VICTORIA \nEnsemble Pro Victoria is one of the most refined young early music ensembles in Britain. Founded at Cambridge University in 2015 by Toby Ward (artistic director) and Humphrey Thompson (editor\, baritone)\, they focus on music from Tudor England\, the Spanish Golden Age and the early Baroque. Most often\, the group performs one-to-a-part\, bringing music to life through the beauty of solo singing instead of a choral approach. \n \nThe seven core members of the group were thrilled to win a joint-first prize in the London International Festival of Early Music Young Ensemble Competition 2020. With a programme of music from the Spanish Golden Age\, they are delighted to return to the London International Festival in 2021 to perform Baroque music from the English and French chapels royal. \nEPV enjoys a close relationship with Professor Magnus Williamson (Newcastle University) and the Tudor Partbooks project; road-testing reconstructions of fragmented works\, performing research using a replica Tudor choir book lectern and making the first recordings of recovered repertoire. \nRecent highlights have included a pared-down Bach St John Passion as part of the ensemble’s online series ‘Live from St Mary’s\, London’ and Tudor Music Afterlives. A filmed recital of Tudor music which lived on in secret after the reformation and Elizabethan Emblems. A programme tracking the effect of the reformation from Catholic polyphony to the height of the Jacobean verse anthem tradition. All supported and advised by William Hunt of Fretwork. \nEnsemble Pro Victoria’s first professional album\, The Robert Fayrfax Quincentenary on Scotland’s Gramophone award-winning classical label Delphian Records\, will be released in October 2021. It is the first recording made of some of the essential music of the Tudor Era; Henry VIII’s nuptial mass to Catherine of Aragon\, the seven surviving courtly songs featuring beautiful early English poetry\, and further reconstructions from the Eton Choirbook (c.1505)\, with celebrated lutenist Toby Carr.

SUMMARY:The Werewolf + The Last Sorcerer
DESCRIPTION:Gothic Opera returns to the stage this Halloween with their first-ever double bill\, Le Loup-garou (The Werewolf) and Le dernier sorcier (The Last Sorcerer)\, which is taking place at the Round Chapel in Hackney. United by their supernatural\, fairytale-like themes and their subtly sinister but light-hearted character\, this pair of operas will invite the audience into an intricately crafted world full of mysterious magical creatures. The opera is sung in French with English subtitles and newly-written spoken dialogue in English. \n\n\n\nFresh from success in the Opera Production category at the Off-West End Awards (with their 2021 UK premiere of Gounod’s La Nonne sanglante)\, Gothic Opera is continuing its mission to open opera up to new audiences and to inspire people to come and experience rarely-heard operas in atmospheric\, evocative locations. This year’s performance promises to shed new light upon the unjustly neglected work of the nineteenth-century female composers Louise Bertin and Pauline Viardot. \n\n\n\nGothic Opera is working with some of the brightest upcoming singers in London to bring these operas to life in the UK for the very first time. They will be joined by a predominantly female creative team\, including stage directors Eleanor Burke\, part of the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker 2022 intake\, who will direct Le Loup-garou\, and Edwina Strobl\, who will direct Le dernier sorcier. The set and costume designer is award-winning Anna Kelsey. The operas will be conducted by musical director Juliane Gallant\, a member of Tapestry Opera’s inaugural Women in Musical Leadership Fellowship. \n\n\n\nFeaturing newly-written dialogue – which brings the operas up to date while responding to the humour of the original – and with a stellar creative team and cast of brilliant\, passionate musicians\, Gothic Opera’s 2022 Halloween production is set to achieve the highest artistic standards\, opening these neglected works up to a wider public. Challenging audiences to experience something brand new this Halloween.

SUMMARY:Gilbert and Sullivan's Princess Ida
DESCRIPTION:Another unlikely G&S scenario where the son and daughter of 2 rival monarchs are betrothed at birth\, but now the time for their wedding is at hand\, the Princess has renounced mankind and set up a university for women from which all men are banned! \n\n\n\nHowever\, much posing and threats of all-out war between the adjoining nations are settled by a very short skirmish between the sons of the monarchs (conveniently\, they have 3 each). The wedding then takes place\, and all look forward to a happy future. It takes a larger-than-usual cast and 3 acts to come to this satisfactory conclusion! \n\n\n\nPerformed by the Ferrier Operatic Society\, this hilarious operetta is full of great music and fun action.

SUMMARY:What the dog said to the harvest
DESCRIPTION:A groundbreaking call for climate justice drawing on opera\, dance\, spoken word\, immersive sound and film. \n\n\n\nThis isn’t a story about plastic straws or bags for life; this is the tale of how we got here. This is what the dog said to the harvest. \n\n\n\nTracing 400 years across multiple narratives\, we confront the era of human displacement. \n\n\n\nCombining the immediacy of live performance and the intimacy of installation\, what the dog said to the harvest is an invitation to solidarity\, highlighting the ripple effect of Western-centric behaviours on silenced communities and drawing on stories from across the UK\, Lebanon and Syria. \n\n\n\nLisa Minerva Luxx weaves poetry\, fiction and memoir alongside critiques of Europe’s foundational philosophies. The inclusion of verbatim illustrates how the climate crisis has long since arrived for Middle Eastern communities and the Global South and leaves us asking how we can build towards a more progressive future across borders. \n\n\n\nJasmin kent rodgman’s installation and score blend sound art\, contemporary x electronic music featuring field recordings\, vocals\, electric guitar\, synths and percussion\, experienced via live performance and 360° surround sound. \n\n\n\nThe work is an immersive promenade experience. Audience members will be free to move around the space as the work unfolds amongst and around them. \n\n\n\nPost-show Q&A with creators on Sunday\, 25 June\, after the 7 pm show.

His favourite pastime was pulling out teeth with a pair of pliers. \n\n\n\nHe claimed that he shared a cell with Ivor Novello\, who was the equivalent of Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Elton John rolled into one. The gentle\, dreamy Ivor was convinced his theatre career was over and he had nothing to live for. \n\n\n\nYet Frankie had his own secret terror\, a threat that would reduce him to a shell of himself. Appallingly\, this was also a “conversion therapy” forced upon LGBTQ+ people. We were considered mentally ill at the time.

SUMMARY:Gothic Opera presents: Rip Van Winkle
DESCRIPTION:Rip Van Winkle is an English-language operetta by Robert Planquette based on two stories by Washington Irving – Rip van Winkle and the famous Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The piece premiered at the Comedy Theatre in London in 1882\, running for around 300 performances – but although popular at the time\, it has not been seen in its English version since the nineteenth century. \n\n\n\nWith a cast of exceptional singers\, Gothic Opera will approach this charming piece with fresh eyes\, reinvigorating it with a new chamber arrangement and newly-written dialogue. \n\n\n\nAfter their success with their 2021 La Nonne Sanglante (The Bloody Nun)\, which won Best Opera Production at the Off-West End Awards 2022\, Gothic Opera are returning to the atmospheric Hoxton Hall this Halloween. Don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:The Duchess of Padua
DESCRIPTION:Oscar Wilde’s epic tragedy of revenge and passion turned into a compact opera. An earnest young man falls for the browbeaten wife of the cruel and coercive Duke – with dreadful consequences for them all. At times melodramatic\, at times sentimental\, our adaptation of Wilde’s beautiful verse follows the twists and turns of this extraordinary Gothic drama in which the only murder is committed by a woman. With arias\, choruses\, a love-duet and a death scene\, a quartet of fine singers brings to life the first performances of this ‘Italian-style’ opera for intimate spaces.  \nBeatrice\, Duchess of Padua \nEllie Neate (soprano) \nGuido Ferranti \nAnna Elizabeth Cooper (mezzo-soprano) \nThe Duke of Padua \nJames Beddoe (tenor) \nCount Moranzone \nHenry Grant Kerswell (bass) \nDirector: Fleur Snow \nDesigner: Melissa Sofoian \n“Powered along by a dynamic\, pulsating score for piano duet\, with soaring bel canto vocals and dramatic recitatives\, there was never a dull moment to be experienced…” (Planet Hugill on Masque of Vengeance\, November 2023)

SUMMARY:Gustav Holst's Operetta - The Idea
DESCRIPTION:Discover the delight of this little known\, family fun\, theatrical operetta\, which makes a welcome return after it’s UK premier during lockdown. The Prime Minister has had an Idea….\nThis early and tuneful composition by English composer Gustav Holst is an unexpected far throw from his best known orchestral suite The Planets. Holst’s collaboration with his 22 year old contemporary of The Royal College of Music Fritz B Hart fuses a sharp\, witty and satirical libretto\, Holst’s catchy tunes\, inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan\, woven into a joyful fresh new arrangement by Patrick Vincent.\nIn a witty and surreal adapted staging by director Paula Chitty. The Prime Minister of this great and glorious country interrupts the wacky court of a rambling king and clown faced queen to announce his great Idea. \n**** ReviewsGate. It is performed and sung with relish – Valaria Perboni has has a nicely acid touch as HM and John Stivey bumbles to the manner born as the PM – by the entire cast. It is a rare delight stagedwith wit -director Chitty did the Costume and set design – and deserves to pop up all over place on the fringe and around after this short season. And the relevance to today needs no pointing up. \n**** LondonTheatre1 Paula Chitty’s direction of this unexpected piece is taut and witty\, with John Stivey and Valeria Perboni doing that ongoing English dance of P.M. and H.M. with edge and deftness.\nIrrational Theatre specialises in the Best of British opera and plays – librettists\, composers and playwrights.
