SUMMARY:Art Exhibition - Voice Of Women Project - KYK
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition – Notting Hill\nArtist ‘Karis Yves Knight’ is delighted to present an exhibition opening in West London on the 23rd-30th of August on Portobello Road. The exhibition celebrates and recognises women’s voices from a multitude of backgrounds and lifestyles\, represented through abstract\, highly colourful and visual portraiture artworks.\nThe ‘Voice of Women Project’\, which runs from the 23-30th of August\, brings ecstatic vibrancy and colour to the J/M Gallery in Notting Hill – running on the weekend of what would be Notting Hill carnival. With leading female figures in the TV & Film industries depicted and those across a multitude of lifestyles and backgrounds\, the exhibition aims to represent all women from all walks of life. Each portrait sold provides a 25% donation to a chosen charity from the portrayed woman. \nThe ‘Voice of Women Project’ (V.O.W) shares women’s voices while creating a space for reflection and community. Artist Karis stated\, “I wanted to create a space for intimate response and relatability\, opening up discussions about the often-overlooked routine struggles of the 21st-century woman. With tragedies such as the Sarah Everard incident highlighting the importance of solidarity and community\, I want this exhibition to help bring women from all walks of life together.” The paintings aim to capture and represent the idea and depiction of women’s values. This is expressed beyond the focus\, which objectifies physical\, sexual bodies and appearances – with the portraits depicting achievements and struggles in a dreamy\, almost psychedelic\, abstract expression. \nArtist Karis also mentioned\, “I realise how amazing and multifaceted we are as humans. This made me reflect on myself as a woman in this world. I feel compelled to use my voice to assist in empowering others and myself.” Book your tickets today for this one-time event to see the latest pieces and charities involved.

SUMMARY:Against All Odds - Free Arts Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A solo art exhibition of bronze sculpture and graphite drawings by the award-winning international sculptor Teresa Wells MRSS. Teresa’s work is inspired by the question\, “How do Humans Behave?” \n\n\n\nShe takes inspiration from the ability of mankind to survive in the face of adversity (Against All Odds).  Her forms evoke unease and tension as she balances each piece on edge.  \n\n\n\nInfluenced by a moral upbringing\, she challenges a contemporary expectation of perfection to celebrate that our whole selves\, including flaws\, make us incredible.

SUMMARY:Reconstruction of Occupation + Extended introduction by Dr Thomas Lorman
DESCRIPTION:A masterful cinematic adventure of a truly forensic nature that uses newly discovered footage to provide a unique perspective on the 1968 military invasion of Czechoslovakia and its aftermath. \n\n\n\nThe discovery of 3 ½ hours of previously unseen\, professionally shot footage of the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia that had been sitting in a garage for more than 40 years triggered a project reconstructing events that took place 55 years ago. Director Jan Sikl\, known for his meticulous work with private family film archives\, used an open call broadcast on Czech Television to trace the people’s identities and locations depicted in the footage and acquire further authentic film material.  Memories of specific events spring to life\, and what starts out as an investigation gradually becomes a reflection of how a historical moment has imprinted itself on us all.  The resulting film combines found professional and amateur footage with 18 interviews with those both behind and in front of the camera during that time while documenting Sikl‘s investigative work. Using a lip-reading expert to decipher what is being said in the silent footage and travelling to visit people and locations across the whole country\, Sikl provides a new perspective on these historical events\, putting a human face on the invasion and its aftermath while creating a specific form of social memory. \n\n\n\nJan Šikl\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia 2021\, 95’  \n\n\n\nPremiered at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2021  \n\n\n\nThe winner of the Best History Documentary Award at the Beyond Borders International Documentary Festival \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nExtended introduction by Dr Thomas Lorman \n\n\n\nThomas Lorman is a lecturer (teaching) in central European history at UCL’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES)\, where he has been teaching and researching since 2010. His most recent publications are The Making of the Slovak People’s Party. Religion\, Nationalism\, and the Culture War in Early 20th-Century Europe (Bloomsbury\, 2020) and A History of the Hungarian Constitution: Law\, Government and Political Culture in Central Europe (Bloomsbury\, 2020)\, which he co-edited with Ferenc Hörcher.
