SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Stephanie Phillips (Big Joanie): In Conversation & Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:We Were Here: A History of Black People and Alternative Music\n\n\n\nStephanie Phillips joins The Long Play Sessions and discusses We Were Here as she rewrites the story of rock ’n’ roll and alternative music\, placing Black artists at the heart of a history they’ve always helped shape. \n\nFrom pioneering figures such as Sister Rosetta Tharpe\, Little Richard\, Jimi Hendrix\, Tina Turner\, Betty Davis\, Poly Styrene and Bad Brains to today’s trailblazing musicians\, Stephanie Phillips reveals the profound influence of Black creativity on alternative music across nearly a century.\n\n\n\nExploring why Black artists have continued to embrace alternative music despite being marginalised by the mainstream industry\, Phillips makes a compelling case that there is no alternative music without Black innovation. Looking ahead\, she celebrates a new generation of Gen Z musicians redefining the possibilities of punk\, metal\, hardcore and indie\, and shaping the future of the genre.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions | Steve Mason: In Conversation and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Scottish singer-songwriter and Beta Band founder Steve Mason joins The Long Play Sessions to discuss his long-awaited memoir\, Failure Is Always an Option – a candid\, hilarious and deeply personal account of one of British music’s most fascinating and uncompromising careers.\n\n\n\nFrom the Beta Band’s genre-defying rise in the late 1990s to sold-out tours with Radiohead\, critical acclaim and spectacular self-sabotage\, Steve reflects on the highs\, lows and chaos of a life lived entirely on his own terms. Blending sharp wit with remarkable honesty\, he explores youth culture\, creativity\, addiction\, failure\, success and redemption\, setting the record straight—or\, as he puts it\, “straight-ish.”\n\n\n\nCelebrated by contemporaries including Oasis\, Primal Scream\, The Chemical Brothers\, The Verve and Radiohead\, the Beta Band became one of Britain’s most influential cult bands\, renowned for their fearless experimentation and unforgettable live performances. Following their acclaimed reunion and sold-out return to the stage\, Steve now looks back on the extraordinary story behind the music in what promises to be an unforgettable evening.\n\n\n\nThe event includes an in-depth conversation with Steve and acclaimed author and journalist Travis Elborough\, an audience Q&A\, and a book signing\, with copies of Failure Is Always an Option available to purchase on the night. \n\nWhether you’re a lifelong Beta Band fan or simply love great stories from the world of music\, this is a rare opportunity to hear from one of Britain’s most original and enigmatic artists.
