DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical fundraising concert with ten members of the internationally renowned South African Buskaid Ensemble – a performance of live classical music from Handel and Elgar to township Kwela music. \nThis is a poignant venue for Buskaid: Buskaid’s Founder\, Rosemary Nalden\, is the daughter of the late Charles Nalden CBE\, one of Coram’s most distinguished foundlings. The Buskaid musicians are themselves no strangers to hardship: like Coram\, Buskaid offers transformative opportunities for less advantaged young people. \nFor this musical celebration\, Rosemary has chosen music to link both charities\, including the Chaconne from Terpsichore by Handel\, Coram’s most famous benefactor\, and Elgar’s Sospiri\, honouring Rosemary’s father\, an accomplished harpist who loved the music of Edward Elgar. The concert will end with a rousing burst of township ‘Kwela’ music\, arranged by the Buskaid musicians themselves. \nTickets and Timings \nTickets can be booked on Eventbrite. \nAll tickets include a welcome drink\, and private access to the Foundling Museum‘s exhibition\, including the special exhibition display\, 300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season. \n6 pm: Access to the Foundling Museum for all guests. \n7 pm-9 pm: Concert with interval. \nAbout Buskaid \nThe Buskaid Music School was founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the less privileged local community in Diepkloof Soweto. At its inception\, it comprised just 15 children; its current membership stands at 82. To meet this demand\, in 2002 Buskaid initiated a teacher-training course for all its students; all the musicians playing tonight are employed by Buskaid as highly-skilled string teachers. \nThe Buskaid Ensemble is world-renowned for its high-performance standards and its innate grasp of musical style\, and as a result\, has undertaken 28 international tours to Europe and the Americas. It is the only African orchestra to have performed at the BBC Proms. \nThe Ensemble has collaborated with many distinguished artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Melvyn Tan\, Steven Isserlis and Karl Jenkins. DESCRIPTION:What Nature Tells Me\n\n\nAlpine Tour Launch Concert\n\n\n\n\nSaturday 20 June 2026 · 7.30pm \nSt John’s Waterloo\, SE1 8TY \nPublic booking is open. \nPrice – Pay what you can (suggested: £15) \nOrchestra for the Earth launches its 2026 Alpine Tour\, What Nature Tells Me\, with a London concert at St John’s Waterloo on Saturday 20 June\, before travelling by train and coach to Austria for a series of performances and education projects in places closely connected to Gustav Mahler’s life and music. \nNow in its ninth year\, the Alpine Tour has become one of the orchestra’s defining projects: an ongoing exploration of the relationship between music\, landscape and listening\, centred on Mahler and the Alpine environments in which much of his music was conceived.\nThe 2026 programme\, What Nature Tells Me\, traces a single musical arc through Mahler’s life\, from the freshness and folk-like early songs to the profound stillness of ‘Der Abschied’ (‘The Farewell) from Das Lied von der Erde (‘The Song of the Earth’). The London concert features\nrising British baritone Michael Lafferty\, with Mahler’s works arranged for chamber orchestra by conductor John Warner. \nThe programme also includes the world premiere of Eat Your Rage\, a new commission by London-based composer Zhenyan Li\, whose work has been performed by ensembles including the London Symphony Orchestra and Ensemble Modern. The commission is a response to Mahler’s musical evocations of nature and forms part of OE’s ongoing commitment to placing new music alongside established repertoire within the same artistic and environmental context. \nFollowing the London launch\, the orchestra travels to Austria from 22–26 June\, including a performance at the Gustav Mahler Festival in Steinbach am Attersee\, where Mahler spent several summers composing\, and a concert on an open-air stage in Steinach am Brenner\, another\nplace closely associated with his summer retreats. When Bruno Walter visited Mahler in Steinbach in 1896\, he marvelled at the surrounding landscape. Mahler replied simply: “No need to look around — I have already composed it all.” The Alpine Tour returns that idea to its source\, placing the music back into dialogue with the\nenvironments that helped shape it. \nMarina Mahler\, Founding Patron of Orchestra for the Earth\, said: “It is deeply moving to see my grandfather’s music brought back into the landscapes that inspired it\, and to see young people included in that experience. This kind of thoughtful\, living engagement with Mahler’s work is both true to its origins and urgently relevant now.” \nWhat Nature Tells Me takes place at St John’s Waterloo\, London\, on Saturday 20 June 2026 at 7.30pm. \nLondon is the home to several dynamic String Ensembles\, including soloists and String Quartets. Musical Chairs is serious music not meant to be taken too seriously\, a playful act of resistance\, a meditation on the good and bad of this world\, and ultimately a remarkable statement on the continuing growth of Artificial Go. \nhttps://artificialgo.bandcamp.com/ \nNO PEELING was formed in 2025 as a studio project by five friends in the fertile Nottingham DIY underground. September 2025’s self-titled EP was the perfect introduction to the No Peeling universe. Bandcamp Daily picked it as an Essential Release\, calling it “a clanging collection of get-in-get-out egg punk that doesn’t ask for more than 10 minutes of your time and overdelivers on every front”. It managed to cram a lifetime of idea-nuggets into seven songs that rarely exceeded the minute mark. A blast of enthusiasm and hyperactivity\, the EP was the audio equivalent of a barrage firework: exhilarating and energising. Whilst the first EP was completed before the band had played live; the forthcoming EP2 hits a little differently. \nEP2 has the garage punk clatter and sparkly efficiency of their debut but is somehow faster and weirder. The guitar and synth seem to be engaged in a constant (playful) fight\, tumbling further and further away from the song structure being held together (and propelled) by one of the tightest rhythm sections around. The scrawl and skronk might occasionally recall No Wave but those grooves are locked down. This all provides the perfect foundation for the wry\, dry observations of Sophie Diver. Born in Leeds\, he masterfully blends Indian classical music with contemporary influences\, reinventing the horizons of the sitar. Trained under the guidance of Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE\, Jasdeep has mastered the gayaki ang technique\, a lyrical style that imitates the human voice\, giving his playing a unique expressive depth. \nIn recognition of his outstanding contributions\, Degun was awarded the Songlines Best Newcomer Award\, an Asian Achievers Award\, and made history as the first sitar player and British-Asian musician to win the Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist award. \nSigned to Real World Records\, Jasdeep’s latest album Jogkauns was his first purely Indian classical album. Recorded with tabla player Harkiret Bahra\, Jogkauns offers a deeply immersive listening experience\, rooted in the Imdad-Khani gharana — the North Indian classical tradition in which Degun has trained. \nThe album is structured as a traditional Indian classical concert\, presenting the entirety of the music within a single raag — Raag Jogkauns\, a relatively modern evening raag that combines the moods of Raag Jog and Raag Malkauns. DESCRIPTION:Having grown up in the small Latvian town of Dobele\, Kristine and Margarita Balanas moved to the UK in their teens. Since studying together at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, they have performed together at New York’s Carnegie Hall\, the Sydney Opera House\, Berlin Philharmonie\, and London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Barbican\, and Royal Festival Hall. \nThis performance\, their first since signing a record deal with Decca Classics\, is an intimate exploration of duet repertoire for violin and cello. Taking place in Newington Green’s iconic working people’s club The Mildmay Club\, the programme centres around compositions by Maurice Ravel and fellow Latvian Peteris Vasks\, complimented by new arrangements of George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi made specially for The Balanas Sisters. \nRavel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello features at the heart of the evening. Written in memoriam of Claude Debussy\, it finds common aesthetic ground with Vasks’ Castillo Interior\, a meditative and spiritual piece inspired by the writings of St Teresa of Ávila. It’s a journey of discovery that mirrors the sisters’ own path in music\, a theme of personal reflection which links together all the music in the programme at this one-off London show.
