SUMMARY:International Women's Day: Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate International Women’s Day 2026\, the Royal Hospital Chelsea is delighted to partner with photographer Jackie King to display a collection of never-before-seen photographs showing some of the 19 female Chelsea Pensioners who currently call the Royal Hospital their home. \nWomen were first admitted to the Royal Hospital Chelsea as Chelsea Pensioners in 2009\, a full three hundred and seventeen years after the Hospital first opened its doors to Army veterans. Since 2009\, many women have chosen to become part of the Royal Hospital community\, donning their scarlet coats with pride. Yet today – seventeen years later – many people are still surprised when they meet a female Chelsea Pensioner. \nThrough her photos\, Jackie King highlights the character of some of the female Chelsea Pensioners currently resident with us. Showcasing the individualism of each sitter\, she shares their unique stories visually\, while representing how embedded in the Royal Hospital community female Pensioners are today.

SUMMARY:Lancelot Ribeiro: Heads – In and Out of Our Time - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Ben Uri Gallery & Museum\, 108a Boundary Road\, St John’s Wood\, London NW8 ORH – Open: 18 September–29 November\, Wednesdays to Fridays: 10 am – 5.30 pm.   \nThis revealing exhibition is part of Ben Uri’s principal focus on researching\, digitally documenting\, disseminating and celebrating the importance of the Jewish\, Refugee\, and broad Immigrant contribution to British visual culture since 1900 – see buru.org.uk and diasporaartists.net both resources within benuri.org. \nThe Ben Uri Research Unit (BURU) is honoured to partner with the Estate of Lancelot Ribeiro to present Lancelot Ribeiro: Heads—In and Out of Our Time\, borrowing its title from the artist’s long-planned but unrealised concept for an exhibition. Featuring 20 paintings and drawings\, it focuses on Ribeiro’s preoccupation with portraiture and imagined heads from two of the most innovative decades of his practice\, the 1960s and the 1990s. \nBorn into a Catholic Goan family in present-day Mumbai in 1933\, Ribeiro followed his older half-brother F N Souza to Britain in 1950\, after India’s independence and Partition. After returning to India and becoming an artist\, Ribeiro settled permanently in Britain in 1962. Inspired by Indian and Goan architecture and the Christian tradition in which he was raised\, he utilised his heads and portraits to explore concepts of power and evil\, described by one reviewer as: ‘Colonialists\, kings\, tyrants\, Christ (resurrected)\, tycoons\, women and thugs’ (Bombay Artist Aid Centre review\, 1961)\, among them the monumental Crowned King (c. 1963) and powerful King Lear (1964\, Ben Uri Collection). Ribeiro’s experiments with new materials\, among them polyvinyl acetate or PVA (a precursor of acrylic paint)\, sometimes mixed with other nontraditional media\, including string\, resulting in a set of radical\, faceless\, abstracted heads\, known as the Psychedelic Man series. In his later work\, Ribeiro often worked on a large scale\, employing brilliant acrylics mixed with elements of collage while disassembling\, reimagining and reinvigorating the head in works including the vivid blue Madonna\, Rising from the Banks of Main. Yet Ribeiro’s close friend and fellow poet\, Indian translator and critic R. Parthasarathy suggests that Ribeiro’s ‘true subject’ was always his ‘origins – Goan roots\, estrangement from India\, and exile in London’. \nA supporting display in the lower galleries features 20 stylistically diverse and innovative paintings\, sculptures\, and works on paper of heads and portraits from the Ben Uri collection by artists including Frank Auerbach\, David Breuer-Weil\, Dodo\, Alfred Harris\, Sarah Lightman\, Alfred Lomnitz\, Hormazd Narielwalla\, Oscar Nemon\, Mosheh Oved\, Paul Richards\, and Samuel Fyzee-Rahamin. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a series of related talks and events and a fully illustrated online publication with essays by contributors\, including the artist’s daughter\, Marsha Ribeiro\, poet and critic R. Parthasarathy\, and conservator Patricia Smithen.

SUMMARY:Charles I and the Civil Wars: The World Turned Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:At 2 pm\, on Tuesday 30 January 1649\, King Charles I stepped onto a wooden scaffold outside Whitehall’s Banqueting House\, knelt in front of thousands of spectators and was publicly beheaded as a traitor. It was the brutal climax of years of civil war\, which had seen tens of thousands of people lose their lives and livelihoods as the kingdoms of England\, Wales\, Scotland and Ireland were plunged into chaos. \nIn this fascinating collaboration with the Museum of London Docklands and HistFest\, bestselling authors Jessie Childs and Leanda de Lisle\, and critically acclaimed playwright and history teacher Thabo Stuck will explore the complex events that led to the fateful moment of Charles’s execution. From the sweeping history of the civil wars and the human stories of debates\, battles and sieges to the mood within the royal court\, the character of Charles I himself\, the resilience of his wife Henrietta Maria\, and the decade-long republican rule that followed. \nIncluding music from Thabo Stuck’s critically acclaimed play\, #50Days\, a panel discussion and immersive re-enactment from the English Civil War Society\, discover the realities of a world turned upside down. There will be an opportunity to purchase the authors’ books at the end of the talk. \nThere are also digital tickets available to watch a livestream of the event. \n  \nAbout \nThabo Stuck is a history teacher from London and the creator and writer of #50Days. #50Days\, Thabo’s debut writing project\, is a Grime Musical that tells the story of the period that leads up to the outbreak of the 17th Century British Civil Wars. Using Grime music\, this show gives underrepresented Brits a voice in telling the story of one of the most integral but often misunderstood narratives of our nation. Described by The Independent as ‘a hurtling exploration of politics and revolution’. \nJessie Childs is an award-winning author\, historian and broadcaster. Her first book\, Henry VIII’s Last Victim\, won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography\, and her second\, God’s Traitors\, won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History. Her third book\, The Siege of Loyalty House: A Civil War Story\, was published in May and hailed by Simon Schama as ‘almost Tolstoyan in its emotional intelligence and literary power’. Jessie reviews for many papers\, including the Sunday Times\, Guardian and London Review of Books\, and her TV contributions include the BAFTA-nominated Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents (BBC 2 & PBS) and two BBC series on Charles I. \nLeanda de Lisle is the author of the bestselling Tudor and Stuart history praised for meticulous research as well as strong narratives. She has a Masters degree in history from Oxford University. TUDOR\, her biography of the Tudor family 1437-1603\, was a top ten Sunday Times bestseller\, BBC History book of the year\, Daily Telegraph book of the year\, and History Today book of the year. THE SISTERS WHO WOULD BE QUEEN; THE TRAGEDY OF MARY\, KATHERINE AND LADY JANE GREY\, was a New York Times best seller and is the inspiration for Phillippa Gregory’s 2017 novel THE LAST TUDOR as well as Elizabeth Fremantle’s Sisters of Treason. WHITE KING\, a biography of the doomed Charles I\, was the winner of the 2018 Historical Writers Association non-fiction crown. Her latest\, on Henrietta Maria\, is a revisionist biography of a reviled queen and a Times and Sunday Times book of the year. \n  \nHistFest is an innovative history festival and events company\, which produces online and in-person events and courses for global audiences. \nThe English Civil War Society bring history to life through the authentic re-creation of 17th-century military and civil life\, stimulating interest in the turbulent period in British history when the country was torn apart by civil war. \n

SUMMARY:Tour of SOAS Library Exhibition: Narratives of Refugee Memories
DESCRIPTION:Including materials from British Ugandan Asians at 50\, SOAS’s Wolfson Gallery\, located inside the SOAS library is currently hosting an exhibition on ‘Narratives of Refugee Memories’ curated by Dr Sanjukta Ghosh (SOAS South Asia Institute). \n‘Unlocking SOAS Collections’\, the exhibits provide the creative lens to look again at the archives of Partition in 1947 and the post-Partition settlement history of displaced people of South Asia and beyond. Partition transcripts from India: A People Partitioned by the former BBC journalist and historian Andrew L. Whitehead\, papers of NGOs and campaigns such as War on Want\, news reports\, correspondences from local organisations and audio-visual materials held in SOAS Library are displayed. \nThe effects of Partition in this polyphonic narrative are\, however\, far-reaching and follow uncharted routes as family connections appear scattered. South Asia\, in this sense\, is not just restricted by its territories\, as the post-colonial diasporic subject shares a common history of the colonial past. The exhibition is enriched with original prints of diasporic artists such as Amarjeet Nandhra’s Displacement and Kamal Koria’s selection from the Journey series and Calamity. \nThe British Ugandan Asian exodus at 50 years ties with those who have the experience of dual migration and lineages from South Asia\, Africa to the UK. Focusing on photojournalism that ignited social and political campaigns worldwide\, a section is devoted to the photographs of the late Mohamed Amin — frontline cameraman extraordinaire (The Mohamed Amin Foundation\, Kenya). Collections from the British Ugandan Asians at 50 project (The India Overseas Trust)\, newspaper prints from Muktokotha archive at Moulvibazar (Bangladesh)\, sit alongside other personal collections — memorable ‘everyday’ artefacts that people carry as ‘belonging’ while leaving their old lives behind \nNazes Afroz\, the former Executive Editor for the South and Central Asia region of the BBC World Service has curated the West Wall exhibition Uncertain Landscape: refugee memories of Kolkata which features contrasting photographs of the past and transformations in the lives of individuals and families.\nTo book for the tour and talk of this exhibition please use the link below and select the 19th August. The time for this tour is set at 5.30pm.

Collections from the British Ugandan Asians at 50 project (The India Overseas Trust)\, newspaper prints from Muktokotha archive at Moulvibazar (Bangladesh)\, sit alongside other personal collections — memorable ‘everyday’ artefacts that people carry as ‘belonging’ while leaving their old lives behind \nNazes Afroz\, the former Executive Editor for the South and Central Asia region of the BBC World Service has curated the West Wall exhibition Uncertain Landscape: refugee memories of Kolkata which features contrasting photographs of the past and transformations in the lives of individuals and families. \nTo book for the tour and talk of this exhibition please use the link below and select 17 August. The time for this tour is set at 5.30pm.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary.
