Each session opens a window into the stories behind the art – blending conversation\, cultural insight and lived experience. \nIn Even the Good Girls Will Cry\, Auf der Maur offers a clear‑eyed\, fiercely honest account of her unexpected ascent through one of the most iconic\, turbulent periods in modern rock history. Her reflections offer rare female perspectives from within a landscape that was often mythologised but rarely shown through a woman’s eyes. \nWith praise from Shirley Manson\, Walton Goggins\, Natasha Lyonne and Martha Wainwright\, the memoir is a powerful\, poetic and unflinchingly human portrait of a generation that defined modern alternative culture. \nWhat to Expect\n\nA talk from Melissa Auf der Maur on the stories\, themes and revelations behind Even the Good Girls Will Cry\nDeep‑dive discussion on creativity\, identity and navigating fame within 1990s alternative rock\nInsights into authorship\, memory and the process of capturing a cultural moment on the page\nAudience Q&A\, offering a chance to engage directly with Melissa about her life\, art and writing\nBook signing opportunity — bring your copy or purchase one at the event\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a thoughtful\, inspiring and powerfully personal evening with one of alternative rock’s most distinctive and fearless voices. \nLocation\nThe Venue\, ICMP (Queens Park Campus)\, NW6 6PA

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Matt Thorne with FAMOUS: Ego\, Envy and Ambition in Pop\, Rock and Hip-Hop
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening with Matt Thorne\, acclaimed author\, critic and cultural commentator\, as he discusses his thought-provoking book Famous\, an insightful exploration of fame\, creativity and modern celebrity culture. \nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, a curated series hosted by ICMP celebrating writers who shape how we understand music\, media and contemporary culture. Each session goes beyond the page\, offering live conversation\, critical context and creative insight. \nIn Famous\, Thorne examines what it really means to be famous in the modern world — how celebrity is constructed\, consumed and mythologised\, and how it impacts artists\, audiences and society at large. Drawing on music\, film\, literature and pop culture\, the book explores the tension between visibility and identity\, success and selfhood. \nRather than glamourising fame\, Thorne asks deeper questions about ambition\, validation and the cost of being seen. The book is especially resonant in an era shaped by social media\, constant exposure and the pressure to build a public persona\, making it essential reading for anyone pursuing a creative career today. \nSmart\, accessible and deeply reflective\, Famous offers a critical lens on the cultural systems that elevate — and often exploit — creative talent. \nWhat to expect \nA talk from Matt Thorne on the themes and ideas behind Famous \nDiscussion around fame\, identity and creativity in the modern music and media landscape \nInsights into writing\, criticism and cultural analysis \nAudience Q&A \nBook signing opportunity — bring your copy or purchase one on the night \nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a thoughtful and engaging evening with one of the UK’s most perceptive cultural writers.
