SUMMARY:The Burden of Hate: Bridging the divide in unforgiving times
DESCRIPTION:The Forgiveness Project’s eighth Annual Lecture! \nOn the evening of Thursday\, 13 September at the beautiful Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill\, we will be holding our eighth Annual Lecture. \nWe are delighted to welcome the American author\, commentator and community organiser Sally Kohn to the UK. As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN\, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences and learning how to talk respectfully with people whose views she disagrees with passionately. \nSally Kohn will be exploring the epidemic of hate all around us – from internet trolls to school bullies\, from racist chants to homophobia – and what we can do to repair our humanity. \nSally’s recent book\, The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity\, investigates the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She talked with people from all around the world\, including many of The Forgiveness Project’s storytellers – Bassam Aramin\, Pardeep Kaleka\, Tony McAleer and Arno Michaelis – drawing surprising lessons from people who left hate behind. \nIn confronting her own shameful moments\, whether as a child bullying a classmate\, or today when she harbours deep partisan resentment\, Sally discovered\, ‘The opposite of hate is the beautiful and powerful reality of how we are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings. The opposite of hate is connection.’ \nTickets: £22 (£12 concessions – low income)\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 35 Powis Square\, W11 2AY\nTransport: Nearest underground stations: Notting Hill Gate or Westbourne Park \nThe Forgiveness Project is an award-winning charity working with real stories to explore how forgiveness\, empathy and sharing stories can be used to break cycles of harm\, transform relationships and restore hope.

SUMMARY:Book launch talk: 'Why can't you afford a home?' by Josh Ryan-Collins
DESCRIPTION:Join Josh Ryan-Collins\, Head of Research at UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP)\, as he gives a talk on the launch of his latest book ‘Why can’t you afford a home?’. The event will be chaired by Guardian columnist and housing expert Dawn Foster. \nThroughout the western world\, a whole generation is being priced out of the housing market. While wages and incomes continue to stagnate for the majority\, house prices and rents remain staggeringly high. \nRyan-Collins argues that to understand this crisis\, we must examine a crucial paradox at the heart of modern capitalism. For anyone who wants to understand the housing affordability crisis and what we can do about it\, this talk is not to be missed.

SUMMARY:Lost Narratives: A Hidden World of Urbex Photography
DESCRIPTION:Join Atlas Obscura for a talk on urban exploration — Urbex — and what it takes to photograph abandoned buildings all over the world. \nUrban Exploration has always been a popular pastime to rule breakers and renegades\, but with the advent of social media\, especially Instagram\, there has been a new rise in its visibility. Once only available to those who were willing to risk the dangers of entering decaying structures\, modern technology has made it possible for photographers to share what’s inside ruins around the world with the world. Viewing this practice through the eyes of an expert will help us uncover more about the compulsion to go off the beaten track and share these discoveries. \nThe talk will be given by urban explorerer and photographer Claire Alaxandra Powell\, and she’ll discuss how keeping secrets within the urbex community helps preserve these structures for the future\, and the history behind the places she’s photographed all over Europe. Claire herself has been hunting for ruins for the past decade in England\, Germany\, Italy\, Vietnam\, Cambodia\, the United States\, and more\, and will bring this wealth of experience and knowledge to share. \nOur event will be hosted in the Asylum Chapel\, an 1824 chapel whose interior was ruined by an incendiary device during World War II. The interior\, almost entirely destroyed from the explosion\, remains in much the same state today.

SUMMARY:The 24/7 Bed: Privacy and Publicity in the Age of Social Media by Beatriz Colomina
DESCRIPTION:About this Event\nThe city is not what it used to be. What is private and what is public has become completely blurred. We can no longer think of distinct spaces for work\, play\, domesticity\, and rest. We are living in a 24/7 culture. Industrialisation brought with it the eight-hour shift and the radical separation between the home and the office or factory\, between rest and work\, night and day. Post-industrialisation collapses work back into the home and takes it further into the bedroom and into the bed itself. Networked electronic technologies have removed any limit to what can be done in bed. Millions of dispersed beds are taking over from concentrated office buildings. The boudoir is defeating the tower. This lecture explores the new role of the bed as the epicentre of labour\, post-labour and love in the age of social media \nAbout the Speaker\nBeatriz Colomina is the Howard Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture at Princeton University and a 2018–2019 fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. She writes and curates on questions of design\, art\, sexuality and media. Her books include Sexuality and Space (Princeton Architectural Press\, 1992)\, Privacy and Publicity: Modern Architecture as Mass Media (MIT Press\, 1994)\, Domesticity at War (MIT Press\, 2007)\, The Century of the Bed (Verlag fur Moderne Kunst\, 2015)\, Manifesto Architecture: The Ghost of Mies (Sternberg\, 2014)\, Clip/Stamp/Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X–197X (Actar\, 2010)\, Are We Human? Notes on an Archaeology of Design (Lars Muller\, 2016). She has curated a number of exhibitions including Clip/Stamp/Fold (2006)\, Playboy Architecture (2012) and Radical Pedagogies (2014). In 2016 she was co-curator of the third Istanbul Design Biennial. Her latest book is X-Ray Architecture (Lars Muller\, 2019). \nAbout the Lecture Series\nThis series supports outstanding scholarship in the history of architecture and allied fields\, building on the work of Professor Robin Evans (1944-1993). It encourages scholars working on the relationship between the spatial and social domains in architectural drawing\, construction and beyond. Evans’ work interrogated the spaces that existed between drawing and building\, geometry and architecture\, teasing out the points of translation often overlooked. From his early work on prison design and domestic spaces\, through to his later work on architectural geometry\, Evans sought to articulate the multiple points at which the human imagination could influence architectural form. His first book\, The Fabrication of Virtue\, analysed the way that spatial layouts provided opportunities for social reform via their interference with morality\, privacy and class. In The Projective Cast: Architecture and its Three Geometries\, Evans traced the origins of the humanist tradition to understand how human form influenced architectural drawing and construction\, focusing on aesthetic dimensions in the production of architectural space. This series will provide opportunities for the creation and/or dissemination of work by scholars working on similar questions of space\, temporality\, and architecture. In particular\, it supports work that breaks the boundaries of traditional disciplines to think though these complex networks involved in the space between human imagination and architectural production.

SUMMARY:Practical Musicology: researching into how to 'do music better' - Book Launch and Lecture
DESCRIPTION:A new monograph by Professor Simon Zagorski-Thomas of the London College of Music\, University of West London which also launches the Bloomsbury Academic book series on 21st Century Music Practice of which he is the series editor. \nThe book deals with research into how to ‘do music better’ rather analysing how it is done. As such\, it is directly relevant to the practical and vocational slant of contemporary music courses and a large slice of new music research. While of course\, an analysis of how something was done can help in our understanding of how to do it better – Practical Musicology is directly aimed at understanding how we develop our ideas of ‘better’ and the strategies we need to achieve those goals. It is therefore something that goes to the heart of the modern university education. \nThe lecture will be held at the University Ealing site\, St Mary’s Road\, London W5 5RF. Registration 5:45pm. Lecture commences at 6pm followed by a reception.

SUMMARY:SIAPA YANG BAWA MELAYU AKU PERGI ? (WHO TOOK MY MALAY AWAY?)
DESCRIPTION:Siapa Yang Bawa Melayu Aku Pergi? (Who Took My Malay Away?) is a lecture performance that was inspired by the creator’s early experiences of living in London and made with the knowledge of life as a Malay person who was born\, raised and educated in Singapore. This solo performance explores what it means to be Malay and what it then means to be Malay in Singapore. \n\n\n\nWhat begins simply as an attempt to reconnect with his culture – by sharing the disappearing traditional writing and reading system of the Malay Language\, Jawi – then becomes a deeper exploration of lost culture\, customs\, heritage and self.

SUMMARY:Instant Expert: Wonders in Space
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of exploring the mysteries and marvels of the universe with six leading scientists. You will start where everything began\, at the Big Bang. Throughout the day\, you will hear about the formation of galaxies\, the latest research into our nearest star\, the Sun\, the mysterious physics of black holes\, the quest to find life on Mars and the discovery of habitable planets outside our solar system. \n\n\n\nThe day will be hosted by a New Scientist journalist and there will be plenty of time to ask your questions to our galaxy of space experts. \n\n\n\nTickets for our popular Instant Expert one-day masterclasses are strictly limited and usual sell out quickly\, so book now to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\nTopics covered will include: \n\n\n\n\nBig Bang\n\n\n\nBlack Holes\n\n\n\nFormation of Galaxies\n\n\n\nMars Exploration\n\n\n\nExoplanets\n\n\n\nThe Sun\n\n\n\n\nTalks and speakers:\n\n\n\nThe Big Bang and the Atomic Universe\n\n\n\nKatherine Blundell\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\nThe Universe began 13.8 billion years ago with the Big Bang and has been expanding ever since. In this talk\, Katherine Blundell will explain the recent revolutions in our understanding of the ‘Early Universe’\, which refers to the first few seconds after the Big Bang. She will explain: \n\n\n\n+ How have these crucial moments determined our universe today+? What is meant by ‘the horizon problem’ and ‘the flatness problem’+? How can we investigate events that happened so long ago \n\n\n\nBlack Holes: the most fascinating objects in the universe\n\n\n\nChristopher Reynolds\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Cambridge\n\n\n\nBlack holes are some of the strangest and most fascinating objects in the Universe. A place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out sounds like something out of science fiction. But how do black holes form\, how many are in our galaxy and beyond\, and do new and future technologies such as gravitational wave detectors and next-generation X-ray telescopes change how we observe them? \n\n\n\nGalaxies: building blocks of the universe\n\n\n\nClaudia Maraston\, Professor of Astrophysics\, University of Portsmouth\n\n\n\nGalaxies are vast collections of stars\, gas\, and dust\, held together by gravity. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are scattered throughout the universe. They are the building blocks that chart the history of our universe\, but how they form and evolve remains a mysterious process. Join Claudia Maraston as she reveals how her research modelling the galaxies of our universe is expanding our knowledge of cosmology. \n\n\n\nLooking for life on Mars\n\n\n\nAndrew Coates\, Deputy Director (solar system)\, Mullard Space Science Laboratory\, University College London\n\n\n\nAre we alone in the Universe? With missions to Mars and outer planet moons\, we hope to find out. We live in an exciting time for Mars exploration. SUMMARY:The Pioneering Pensioners
DESCRIPTION:Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders are now officially pensioners\, with Saunders in his early 70s and Fowler in his late 60s. Despite being at a point in life when most people are hanging up their boots\, the pair are still as excited as ever for exploratory climbing. \nIn 2024\, the pair travelled to the Pakistani Karakoram where\, over seven days\, they made the first ascent of the spectacular Yawash Sar (6258m)\, a beautiful peak sometimes referred to as “the Matterhorn of the Khunjerab.” \nEven more impressively\, Fowler\, a cancer survivor\, made the climb (which included a night spent hanging from the side of the mountain in their harnesses) while wearing a colostomy bag. \nFor one night only\, they join us at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) to discuss their latest climb\, their enduring partnerhsip and their future plans (because they aren’t stopping yet!)

SUMMARY:Adventures in Arts Based Research: Reimagining Horizons by Professor Kitrina Douglas
DESCRIPTION:In this inaugural lecture\, I journey through a landscape that has shaped and challenged my research over the past twenty years. This is a terrain marked by many peaks and plenty of deep ravines and cliff edges. How do we tell the stories of those who have no power? How do we understand and communicate difficult or impossible experiences to narrate in words? What are the consequences for our society and culture when research omits somatic or pre-linguistic ways of knowing? How may we stand with participants by including our own experiences and vulnerabilities? How can we conduct research with – not on – others? \nAbout the Speaker: \nBefore entering academia\, Kitrina played international amateur golf\, representing England and Great Britain\, before joining the professional ranks\, where she played on the European tour. Among her dozen or so titles are twice winning the European Masters Championships\, the English Open Championships\, and she was a member of the first winning European Solheim Cup team. She spent a decade working in television and radio\, first with the BBC Radio Five Live outside broadcasting team\, and then with Eurosport presenting programs in Paris.
