SUMMARY:Summits\, Science and Survival
DESCRIPTION:The mountains are changing around us. Glacier loss and increasing instability are making the work of exploratory mountaineers ever more hazardous and difficult\, but the challenges are no less acute for those living in the valleys beneath these crumbling giants. \nThis year’s Mount Everest Foundation lecture asks what the future holds for mountaineers and mountain communities\, drawing on the experiences of young alpinists and pioneering mountain scientists. \nGeorge Ponsonby and James Price’s ascent of Aikache Chhok (6673m) in Pakistan was hailed as one of the most impressive mountaineering achievements of 2025\, a daring climb that pushed the pair to the limit over nine days on the mountain. As two climbers at the very start of their careers\, they exemplify how a new generation is choosing to approach high altitude climbing. \nJoining them on stage will be Professor Rachel Carr and Sonam Rinzin who will present their groundbreaking research on glacial lake outburst floods and the growing risks they pose to mountain communities. Drawing on their work in Bhutan\, the pair will explain how remote villages might adapt to this growing threat. \nJoin us for an evening of inspiration and insight\, pulled direct from the frontlines of mountain exploration.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture - The Garvellach Islands\, Scotland: a rare record of Snowball Earth
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the Cryogenian Period\, around 717 million years ago\, ice caps advanced abruptly to cover the entire planet. Global ice cover is thought to have been attained relatively quickly\, over thousands of years\, because of the albedo effect – that is\, the more ice there is\, the more sunlight is reflected back into space\, and vice versa. After reaching the equator\, ice sheets persisted there for up to 58 million years. Understanding how our planet could have plunged into such extreme cold is still the subject of intense debate\, but there is a problem. Sedimentary records of the moment when ice first reached low latitudes are absent everywhere on Earth\, or so we once thought. \nOff the west coast of Scotland lies a chain of tiny islands called the Garvellachs that may hold some of the clues to a time in Earth’s history known evocatively as ‘Snowball Earth’. The islands host the only known demonstrably transitional record from underlying carbonate rocks of the Tonian period into glacial rocks of the Cryogenian. Sedimentary observations of these late Tonian carbonates can be interpreted as deposition in warm tropical seas\, full of bacterial life\, before an observable transition into an increasingly frigid climate and the definitive movement of ice caps over the land; akin to seeing Greenland-scale ice caps descending on the Caribbean today. Elsewhere on Earth\, this pivotal transition into the Cryogenian period appears to have been removed by the erosive power of glaciation\, resulting in a missing time gap in the sedimentary record. However\, on the Garvellach\,s no such gap is found\, making it a truly unique location globally for Snowball Earth science. \nNew geochronological age constraints from the rocks on the Garvellachs show that they were deposited between 717 and 660 million years ago\, marking the first of two Snowball Earth glaciations in the Cryogenian. Armed with these new-age constraints and the unique preservation of the transition into this global glaciation\, these Scottish islands may prove integral for understanding how and why Earth descended into a Snowball Earth climate state\, whilst having ramifications for defining the geological timescale. \n  \nThis event is free to attend.

SUMMARY:Public Lecture - Lost in illustration: the art (and science) of communicating through graphics
DESCRIPTION:Once upon a time\, a hand-drawn sketch of the outlines of South America and Africa was all it took to make a compelling scientific statement: hey\, don’t these two continents look like they broke apart from each other? Plate tectonics was in its infancy\, data were scarce\, and ideas were still forming. Fast forward to today\, and we have decades of research\, complex datasets\, and sophisticated methods—and our science figures are starting to suffer under the weight of everything\, everywhere\, all at once. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Lucía Pérez-Díaz explores how the role of graphics in science is evolving\, and where it may have gone astray. Drawing (pun intended) on her perspective as a geoscientist and author-illustrator\, she examines how our figures may be falling short—failing not just to communicate clearly\, but to spark curiosity. This matters more than ever\, as science increasingly needs to reach beyond specialist circles and into communities that may meet it with indifference—or even distrust. \nWhen designing scientific figures\, accuracy is important – but so is empathy. Our visuals need to offer viewers a way in\, a path to follow\, and a clear destination. We need to think not only about what audiences can understand\, but what they’ll choose to engage with. From nostalgic 19th-century cross-sections to googly-eyed data plots\, this talk invites us to rethink how we draw science—and how we draw people in. Bring a pencil\, no better time to start than now. \nThis lecture is free to attend.

SUMMARY:The Pioneering Pensioners
DESCRIPTION:Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders are now officially pensioners\, with Saunders in his early 70s and Fowler in his late 60s. Despite being at a point in life when most people are hanging up their boots\, the pair are still as excited as ever for exploratory climbing. \nIn 2024\, the pair travelled to the Pakistani Karakoram where\, over seven days\, they made the first ascent of the spectacular Yawash Sar (6258m)\, a beautiful peak sometimes referred to as “the Matterhorn of the Khunjerab.” \nEven more impressively\, Fowler\, a cancer survivor\, made the climb (which included a night spent hanging from the side of the mountain in their harnesses) while wearing a colostomy bag. \nFor one night only\, they join us at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) to discuss their latest climb\, their enduring partnerhsip and their future plans (because they aren’t stopping yet!)

SUMMARY:The Revolution will be published: Rising to future challenges in the book trade\, after four decades of change
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lively evening of insights and discussions on the future of the book industry. \n\n\n\nOver the last forty years\, book publishing has undergone a number of revolutions\, and now AI faces urgent new reasons to evolve rapidly. Reflecting on this journey and challenge\, Stephen Page (Chair of Faber & Faber) will describe the forces that made the industry of today and discuss what must change and what must not if it is to evolve successfully. Speaking as an eyewitness to events over four decades\, he will propose that publishing is intrinsically revolutionary\, amplified by technology shifts\, and must see itself as part of the collective endeavour to make knowledge and stories public to the benefit of society. \n\n\n\nAgenda: \n\n\n\n\nRegistration (5:30 – 6pm)\n\n\n\nTalk with Stephen Page (6 – 7pm)\n\n\n\nNetworking and refreshments (7 – 8pm)

SUMMARY:Dr Amir Khan: Doctor in the House
DESCRIPTION:Dr Amir Khan\, everyone’s favourite family doctor\, has announced his first-ever live dates starting on 18th May at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre. \n\n\n\nThe ‘Doctor In The House’ tour promises a fascinating\, heart-warming and frequently hilarious evening\, where Dr Amir will share stories about growing up in his British Asian family with six sisters\, ruled by Mama Khan. He will also talk about his life as a general practitioner with emotional and downright stories of patient encounters from the heartwarming to the bizarre\, painting a profoundly revealing portrait of healthcare in twenty-first-century Britain.  Years of underfunding and lack of staff have brought the NHS to a crisis point\, and Dr Amir will argue why it should be saved before it’s too late. \n\n\n\nHe will also detail his journey to becoming a doctor\, something he never wanted to do\, preferring to become a vet. But how many Asian vets do you see? None right. And how many Asian doctors do you see? Bloody loads. Influenced by his mother\, Amir applied to study medicine\, and the rest\, as they say\, is history… \n\n\n\nFinally\, Dr Amir will bring the doctor’s surgery to you\, taking questions from the audience and tackling seemingly personal and often challenging subjects in a relaxed and practical manner\, offering advice – from sleeping issues and headaches to joint pain and heart palpitations. This promises to be an entertaining\, informative\, and liberating evening with Dr Amir as he reminds us just how unique the NHS is. \n\n\n\n“I can’t wait to see you on my first U.K. tour. Putting this show together has been so much fun… there are many laughs and passionate support for our beloved NHS\, and you get to put your medical questions to me. But please don’t tell Mama Khan about it….” \n\n\n\n DR AMIR 2023
