Experience unmissable aerial and acrobatic performances above and around you\, dive into fun hands-on circus workshops\, and let your creativity run free with craft activities\, all part of a packed programme across the weekend. \n\n\nDiscover Miss La La\, Degas and Croydon\n \n\n  \nMiss La La was one of the most celebrated circus performers of the 19th century. An Afro-German aerialist whose feats of strength were so extraordinary that Edgar Degas attended her performances four nights running and painted her suspended high above the Cirque Fernando\, held only by her jaw. \nThat painting now hangs at full scale in Croydon as part of the National Gallery’s Art on Your Doorstep programme\, and this July\, Upswing is bringing the street to life in her honour. \n\nPlan your visit\nThe event runs across two days on Croydon High Street. There are performances from roller skating and hula hoop to aerial silks and acrobatics\,\, crafts activities\, workshops and a DJ spinning a mix of afrobeats and classical to set the scene on both days. We want to make The Farm accessible to all by bringing some of our animals for a fun day out in Covent Garden and invite all families\, residents\, local workers and visitors to London to our wonderful Family Farm Day. Everyone is welcome! \nAs part of the event you can enjoy petting our goats\, sheep and alpacas\, have snuggles in the Cuddle Corner with our rabbits and guinea pigs\, learn how to make musical instruments from vegetables hosted by London Vegetable Orchestra\, take part in our super fun educational workshops\, have your face painted\, relax during story time sessions\, cool down with a farm themed cocktail or mocktail\, watch our spinners spin yarn from our farm animals wool\, pick up a treat from The Farm Shop\, make the most of the photo ops… and much more! \nEntry to the event is free with a suggested donation to The Farms £250\,000 Anniversary Appeal; as a small education charity any donation means a great deal to us. DESCRIPTION:DreamState is a pop-up experience that invites visitors of all ages to discover interactive zones exploring themes from nostalgia and relaxation to celebration and creativity. The experience brings to life original work by 112 writers – all of whom are children based in Hackney aged between 6 and 15 who attend Ministry of Stories weekly community writing labs.  \n  \nDreamState features eight separate rooms\, with unique worlds tied to the stories written at the Ministry of Stories community writing labs. The space will include a banqueting hall featuring the written word as the meal; a serene zone to help visitors relax; a nostalgia filled locker room that evokes childhood memories; a celebration room filled with glitter and confetti where visitors can party with a neon leopard; an eerie room complete with a scariness scale so that guests can choose the level of spooky that they are comfortable with; a botanist workshop with strange new plants that people may have never encountered; the control room where the ideas stem from; and finally the ‘dream dream’ room\, which will ask visitors what dream they would most like to have tonight. \n  \nMinistry of Stories was co-founded by author Nick Hornby in 2010 and aims to champion the writer in every child. It helps young people in East London discover their confidence\, imagination and potential through the power of their writing. Working primarily with young children in Tower Hamlets\, Hackney and Islington\, the organisation has supported over 20\,000 young people in the local community since its launch through its free weekly community writing labs.  \n  \nMinistry of Stories is partnering with architecture and design studio make:good to bring to life DreamState. make:good works closely with local communities to shape neighbourhood change and support communities to create lasting social infrastructure. They have also partnered with Shoreditch Town Hall who will be hosting the experience at its basement venue\, The Ditch. \n  \nRob Smith\, Director\, Ministry of Stories said: “Ministry of Stories has been supporting local children and championing their writing for fifteen years and we are honoured to be presenting their work to the world in our most ambitious showcase to date. The children who take part in our community writing labs are imaginative\, fun and playful so there is no better way to show you their work than with DreamState. Little does she know what’s in store when peasant girl Robin promises to lead the rebellion against these terrible tyrants. DESCRIPTION:London’s Favourite Free Festival is back at Greenwich Peninsula\, with a line-up to entice the whole family. \n\n\n\nThe Urban Village Fete returns to Greenwich Peninsula for its 7th year with a cracking line-up of entertainment\, DJs\, workshops\, and talks – all for free! \n\n\n\nAlongside a packed programme of free entertainment throughout the day\, there’s a star-studded line-up of DJs keeping the party going\, with headline sets from Bradley Zero and other special guests taking over Central Park. After dark\, party-goers can head to Canteen for more drinks and dance on a heated indoor terrace. \n\n\n\nKicking off at 11 am\, there will be live performances\, arts and crafts\, food\, markets\, music and more\, with something for everyone to enjoy and get involved with throughout the day. Hosted in the heart of Greenwich Peninsula\, a riverside neighbourhood with art and culture embedded in its fabric\, the event attracts thousands of people from all over London for a free day out like no other in the capital.  \n\n\n\nDesign District will once again host Robert Elms in the Talks Tent to lead insightful conversations and spark debate across a range of topics from Sports to Sustainability. For those wanting to fill their bellies and brains\, Canteen Food Hall offers an eclectic mix of street food from 6 different vendors\, freshly shaken cocktails\, cold beer and plenty of fizzes to quench the thirst. The food quarter at the Fete extends beyond Canteen\, through the Bureau restaurant\, and along the park\, where hungry visitors can feast on homemade and locally sourced goodies from the likes of Cakehole and Pasta e Basta. \n\n\n\nFor those wanting to get their hands dirty\, this year’s programme of interactive workshops will not disappoint. From origami to knitting\, and even a canine circus\, big kids\, little kids and furry friends are all invited to get involved and bring the spirit of the Fete alive through participation and collaboration. \n\n\n\nLaura Flanagan\, Director at Knight Dragon\, says: ‘Hosting the Urban Village Fete is one of the highlights of our year\, with thousands of people enjoying our unique spaces across the Peninsula from Central Park to Design District. Can the animals save the day\,along with Peter’s precious lost jacket? \n\n\n\nThis is our 19th original family show since 2017 and the sixth we have staged in Mayow Park’sbowling green. From the same team that brought you Alice in Wonderland in 2019\, Puss in Boots in2020\, The Gingerbread Man and Around the World in 80 Days in 2021\, our shows are fun\,fast-moving and musical versions of well-known stories\, always with a bit of a twist. The Heart Tribe live off the land and worship the sun\, while the Eye Tribe\, live by the sea\nand worship the power of water. DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. DESCRIPTION:Join London Wildlife Trust at Streatham Common for our Great North Wood Festival to celebrate the Wood’s wildlife and history.  \n\n\n\nThe Great North Wood was once a patchwork of wild woods and common ground that covered the low hills between Deptford and Croydon.  \n\n\n\nThe woods have largely been swallowed up by the growth of south London\, but the Great North Wood lives on in local names (such as Norwood and Honor Oak) and in surviving sections of woodland\, which still stand as havens for wildlife and nature.  \n\n\n\nThe Festival of the Great North Wood will be a celebration of the Wood’s vast history and wildlife with a chance to learn more about why it’s so special. Join a guided walk and find out about local birds\, pond life\, and butterflies. Witness a spectacular falconry display\, a giant interactive bubble show\, or get stuck into the games museum. There will be plenty of activities for all the family including face painting\, crafts\, and music.  \n\n\n\nThe event is free to attend\, and we look forward to seeing you there!
