SUMMARY:Make-A-Wish® UK Valentines Ball
DESCRIPTION:Make-A-Wish® UK invites you to their annual Valentine’s Ball taking place at The Royal Lancaster Hotel\, London on Saturday 15th February. The charity is delighted to announce that popstar Nadine Coyle will be headlining the event performing her long-awaited new music being released later this month along with the much-loved classics. This glorious extravaganza promises an evening of exclusive entertainment\, amazing food\, and fundraising opportunities for a great cause. \n“I am delighted to be part of the Make-A-Wish UK Valentine’s Ball on 15 January. I hope to see you there to celebrate the wonderful things that Make-A-Wish does for children and their families.” Nadine Coyle \nTickets for this incredible event cost £300 each or £3\,000 for a table of 10\, with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish and the wonderful children and families they support. \n  \n\n\n \nThe Valentine’s Ball will welcome over 300 guests\, who will experience a glamorous and truly unique evening. Guests will be treated to a champagne reception\, a three-course dinner and fine wines\, and lively entertainment throughout the evening. \nThe Ball will be hosted by popular presenter and journalist Lauren Layfield\, as well as presenter and magician\, Archie Manners. This sensational evening will be opened with a fun-filled\, energetic performance from West End Kids\, singing hits from the popular show Waitress. \nThere is the much anticipated main and silent auctions\, with bespoke ‘money can’t buy prizes’\, along with a truly powerful moment of the evening\, where children’s One True Wishes can be sponsored. This year’s Auctioneer will be the wonderful BBC Flog It’s Thomas Forrester. \nThe evening will culminate in an amazing performance from Nadine\, followed by an upbeat house band to get guests dancing the night away. \nThe Valentine’s Ball is an important part of the charity’s fundraising efforts and has been running for over 15 years. Last year’s event\, formerly known as the Spring Ball\, raised over £300\,000\, and the charity is hoping to exceed it for 2020. This amount helps Make-A-Wish to grant more than 65 children’s magical wishes. \nBetween September 2018 and August 2019\, the charity granted a record number of magical wishes in one year\, reaching over 1\,100 children. However\, every month\, hundreds more children turn to them and their goal is to reach every child that needs a wish. \nA child’s wish is totally unique and magical for them. Whether it’s starring in their own films\, walking with dinosaurs\, going on their first family holiday\, meeting a celebrity hero\, or having a bedroom makeover; wishes are varied\, personal and life changing. Make-A-Wish aims to always go above and beyond the children’s imagination in to granting their extraordinary wishes to very amazing children. Crucial funds raised at the Ball will go towards granting wishes such as Skye’s\, who wished to go to Milan Fashion Week. \nTickets are now available to purchase\, with full information on how to book on the charity’s website. Make-A-Wish looks forward to welcoming you to the Valentine’s Ball\, and thanks you for your support.

I cannot wait until I attend another one… the musicians were something else. SUMMARY:Festival of the Great North Wood
DESCRIPTION:Join London Wildlife Trust at Streatham Common for our Great North Wood Festival to celebrate the Wood’s wildlife and history.  \n\n\n\nThe Great North Wood was once a patchwork of wild woods and common ground that covered the low hills between Deptford and Croydon.  \n\n\n\nThe woods have largely been swallowed up by the growth of south London\, but the Great North Wood lives on in local names (such as Norwood and Honor Oak) and in surviving sections of woodland\, which still stand as havens for wildlife and nature.  \n\n\n\nThe Festival of the Great North Wood will be a celebration of the Wood’s vast history and wildlife with a chance to learn more about why it’s so special. Join a guided walk and find out about local birds\, pond life\, and butterflies. Witness a spectacular falconry display\, a giant interactive bubble show\, or get stuck into the games museum. There will be plenty of activities for all the family including face painting\, crafts\, and music.  \n\n\n\nThe event is free to attend\, and we look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:END OF! A musical about climate change
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to celebrate Lewisham’s Borough of Culture in 2022 with our most original show to date – a brand new musical about Climate Change. \nIt’s 50 years in the future\, and in a society ravaged by the effects of Climate Change\, two tribes are warring\nover limited resources. The Heart Tribe live off the land and worship the sun\, while the Eye Tribe\, live by the sea\nand worship the power of water. Perhaps they can find a way to work together – build a time machine – and\nwarn their ancestors of the world that awaits them unless Climate Change can be stopped…? \nThis highly entertaining – and thought provoking – show is a fast-moving\, musical extravaganza\, featuring\namazing designs\, original songs\, audience participation and lots of surprises. In these troubled times\, we\nbelieve it will send a message of hope – and change!

Enjoy an afternoon of exploration and playfulness in nature with your whole family. \n\n\n\nWe will gather by the fireside for drinks and snacks before venturing into the woods once more to discover the rare nightingales’ habitat. Once there\, we’ll gather gently close by and listen to their unmistakable courtship song. \n\n\n\nJoin us this May for a rare and thrilling journey in the springtime woodlands of Sussex. \n\n\n\nPlease see the ticketing for price options. Under 2s get free entry. \n\n\n\nPlease note that this event is for parents or guardians and their children. \n\n\n\nThe Nightingale \n\n\n\nIn this modern age\, with biodiversity in decline and habitats being eroded\, the Nightingale has become representative of all that we have to lose. \n\n\n\nThe Nightingale is a small\, brown\, unremarkable-looking bird\, but it possesses one of nature’s finest singing voices. The bird winters in Africa but spends April to July mating and nesting in Europe and the Middle East. Worldwide\, the population is healthy\, but the numbers visiting England have declined so sharply that it is now on the UK’s Red List of species of the greatest conservation concern.

In a community park beside an international landmark\, this event inspires sustainable living and celebrates community action. \n\n\n\nFrom when the sun sits high over Tower Bridge until the last pink rays disappear behind London Bridge\, on grassy fields next to the Thames\, this free festival showcases the juxtaposition of incredible London landmarks alongside cityscape\, nature and one of the world’s great rivers. \n\n\n\nCelebrating everything that Potters Fields Park and the London Bridge neighbourhood have to offer; merging green spaces\, evocative history\, wonderful architecture\, a diverse residential community\, and thriving businesses – this is one of London’s most culturally innovative\, sustainable and exciting districts. In a Field by a Bridge is the first opportunity to showcase what London Bridge has to offer as a leading environmentally-focused business district\, highlighting the transition to a carbon-neutral economy\, low-impact living and healthy lifestyles. The impact of this festival on the local community is aimed to create positive social and economic longevity far beyond this launch weekend. \n\n\n\n“Great festivals have meaning and a purpose  and  a team that means it\, and if you can add an amazing location\, then BINGO!\, In a Field by a Bridge has the aim to be an exemplary sustainable festival and in Team London Bridge\, a festival funder that “means it”.  \n\n\n\nThe location is nothing short of spectacular. Potters Fields is a beautifully maintained public green space overlooking the Thames and with views to the adjacent Tower Bridge\, London Bridge\, and The Tower of London. Across Tooley Street\, the festival’s second green space  St. John’s Churchyard\, is a wonderful community park that will play host to the Beyond Food-led “Feast in a Field“ initiative\, where local “legends in their own kitchen” will allow Londoners and visitors from all around the UK and the world to get a taste of delicacies that thus far only their families have been able to enjoy. \n\n\n\nWe are aiming to make In a Field by a Bridge a  must-attend annual event.  I would ensure you can  say you were there at that first one in July 2023 !” \n\n\n\nWayne Hemingway\, HemingwayDesign \n\n\n\nThis free festival aims to enable and encourage education and action on greener living through creative programming. It’s jam-packed with an incredible showcase of live performances\, interactive workshops\, film screenings\, architectural tours\, activities for all the family\, and more. \n\n\n\nThe full programme coming soon\, but here’s a sneak peek for now…. \n\n\n\n\nKeith Brymer Jones and Clayground mass participatory clay workshop celebrating the history of pottery-making in the area\n\n\n\nSocial Enterprise Beyond Food Community Feast in a Field\n\n\n\nProgramme of workshops\, talks & walks curated by London National Park City and its network of park rangers\n\n\n\nTopical talks programme with headline panellists\n\n\n\nLocal businesses & resident involvement\n\n\n\nFilm screenings\n\n\n\nSuitcase Sale\n\n\n\nDesigners and makers market\n\n\n\nStreet food & drink\n\n\n\nWorkshops\n\n\n\nMusic & Entertainment on a pedal-powered stage.\n\n\n\n\n——————————– \n\n\n\nFor a number of years\, the London Bridge community has been addressing global problems with local commitments. Matching the ambition of Southwark Council and the Mayor of London\, local businesses have committed to a first-of-its-kind route map with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and dramatically decreasing the 130\,000 tonnes of CO2e they produce annually – an output equivalent to powering 25\,295 homes a year. In a Field by a Bridge will highlight ways we can collectively and individually decarbonise and instil new ideas for low-carbon living into our daily routines.  \n\n\n\n“In a Field by a Bridge will mark the start of the summer for many of us. Alongside HemingwayDesign\, we have curated two days of riverside festivities for the curious\, creative and conscientious who just like to have a good time! Everything has been planned with sustainability in mind.  Come along and discover Feast in a Field – our community cookout\, experience making ceramics with Keith Brymer Jones of BBC2’s The Great Pottery Throw Down\, and find a pre-loved bargain at the massive suitcase sale along the Thames. We hope to see In a Field By a Bridge become a regular fixture on London’s cultural calendar for many years.”   \n\n\n\nEllie Beedham\, Director of Arts\, Team London Bridge \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n“Access to green space and nature has never been more important to our busy urban lives. With our award-winning parks\, commitment to sustainability\, passion for our area and pride in our community\, we’re excited to host the first In a Field by a Bridge festival.  We can’t wait to share two days of fun and inspiring activities with visitors from around the world and the corner.” \n\n\n\nSheila Benjamin\, Chief Executive of Potters Fields Park Management Trust \n\n\n\n“I am pleased and excited to be involved in this community event ‘In a Field by a Bridge’. It brings together the history of Potters Field on the banks of the Thames in the heart of London whilst creating an event that is accessible to the local community and beyond. Bringing historic places back to life through creativity is arguably the best way to highlight our past and recognise its significance for future generations.“ \n\n\n\nKeith Brymer Jones\, ceramics and homeware designer.  \n\n\n\n“We’re incredibly excited to be curating the London National Park City Zone at the first ever In A Field By A Bridge festival this summer\, not least because it coincides with the 4th anniversary of London becoming the world’s first National Park City. There will be events and activities galore\, all celebrating urban nature and the outdoors\, and we can’t wait to see you all there.” \n\n\n\nMark Cridge\, Executive Director\, London National Park City \n\n\n\n“Beyond Food Foundation and Brigade Bar+Kitchen have been in The Fire Station on Tooley Street for over a decade. Brigade is a social enterprise restaurant that cooks with live fire and smokes produce on site. Beyond Food is a charity that has helped over 7000 individuals whose lives have unravelled to regain confidence and independence. We have also supported over 2000 people to gain professional skills\, which have taken many to work in the hospitality industry. We are delighted to be involved in the community-focused event ‘In a Field by a Bridge’\, helping us to support and engage in our local community\, placing a spotlight on the work of our charity.” \n\n\n\nJo Littman\, Beyond Food \n\n\n\n“It was an enticing invitation from Wayne Hemingway to work on this inaugural festival on the site of such rich ceramics history. The offer to develop a large-scale participatory installation to animate the space with members of the public\, many of whom have never touched clay before\, goes to the heart of Clayground Collective’s ethos to bring art practice through clay to all.” \n\n\n\nCo-Directors Duncan Hooson\, Claire West & Julia Rowntree\, Clayground Collective \n\n\n\nIn a Field by a Bridge is just a short walk from London Bridge Station and the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers river bus service and is set amid the attractions of the London Bridge area with its cafes\, restaurants and theatres.  \n\n\n\nI: @inafieldbyabridge \n\n\n\nT: @inafieldfest
