SUMMARY:Ophelia in Exile - Art Installation Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Meet the fictional character of Ophelia\, who has been in quarantine for an indefinite period. Ophelia in Exile is a multi-media art installation exploring the importance of all our senses in giving meaning to our human experience. Its concept is inspired by the current pandemic and its impact on how we engage with others. The exhibition is one of the manifestations of an ongoing collaborative project called Tangible Territory journal\, conceived by artist Tereza Stehlíková and her multi-disciplinary team of TT collaborators from the world of arts\, philosophy and science. \n“We are not creatures that see\, hear\, touch\, smell and taste as separate and isolated sensations. Our sensory systems integrate experiences of our existential encounters with the world. Human reality is not visual or auditive. It is essentially multi-sensory\, and this sensory integration provides the integrity of the real\, the truth and the magic of the world.” Professor Juhani Pallasmaa\, architect (from Tangible Territory Journal’s upcoming issue n.3)\nThe exhibition by Czech artist Tereza Stehlíková explores the fictional character of Ophelia\, who has been quarantined in her home for an indefinite period. Ophelia has been exiled from the outside world: from contact with people\, from nature\, from a whole human experience. Instead\, she encounters the world through windows of monitors\, engaged in Zoom calls or simply browsing Instagram\, searching for images of the natural world which she longs to touch\, smell. After many months of her strange\, sterile existence\, Ophelia is starting to feel two dimensional\, like her version inside a computer monitor. \nOphelia is a kind of avatar who stands in for each of us\, as we appear on the other side of the screen when we communicate on video calls or us isolated in our homes\, perhaps deprived of smell by the virus. The Covid pandemic has accelerated the existing move towards virtualisation of our experience and over prioritising the audio-visual senses. The computer/phone screen has become a modern-day shrine\, our most favoured window\, a portal into other realities\, a representation of the world that is out of reach\, as well as a mirror reflecting our image. We are all a bit like Ophelia in this new world\, deprived of touch\, disconnected\, only virtually present. How can this strange state of being be explored creatively and questioned philosophically? Have we examined it scientifically? \nThe exhibition is connected to the Tangible Territory journal\, which Stehlíková conceived during a lockdown in 2020 https://tangibleterritory.art/. This cross-disciplinary journal focuses on “how we make sense with all our senses”\, the role of embodiment and multi-sensory perception in aesthetics\, and the interplay between the “real world” of our proximity senses and the screen world audio-visual re-presentation. (The third issue of TT journal is being launched in connection with the exhibition’s opening.)\nThe exhibition invites visitors to enter Ophelia’s living room to witness some of her everyday reality through all their senses\, including touch and smell. You will find a strange hybrid space\, where the domestic environment\, technology and nature intertwine or even compete for attention. You will catch glimpses of Ophelia on monitors as she moves through strange interiors\, trying to feel and make sense. You will find traces of her presence in the objects she left behind: empty cups\, a mirror\, a necklace\, a letter from a distant friend\, her unique perfume. You may also overhear fragments of Zoom conversations\, voices of scientists and philosophers speculating on how and why Ophelia might be feeling what she does.\nTereza Stehlikova is a Czech-born artist who works across media\, primarily in video and performance. She has just become the visual arts department head at the University of Creative Communication in Prague. Stehlikova holds a PhD from the Royal College of Art\, where she researched tactile language of cinema and is currently engaged in cross-disciplinary research\, investigating how moving images can be used to communicate embodied experience and questioning the role of the senses in aesthetic experience.\nShe is a founder of Sensory Sites\, an international collective based in London\, generating collaborative exhibitions\, installations and research projects that explore multi-sensory perception and bodily experience. Stehlikova’s work has been shown at a variety of film and art festivals around the world.\nMore about Stehlikova’s work at https://cinestheticfeasts.com/ \nExhibition dates: 8 October 2021 – 15 January 2022\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY\nOpening hours:\nTue – Fri 10 am – 5 pm\nPrivate View: Friday 8 October 2021\, 6 – 8 pm. SUMMARY:Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi\, The Four Seasons. Mystery ensemble. Kensington Church concert series
DESCRIPTION:А unique concert on May 27th will take place at 8 pm in an ancient church in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The programme of the evening includes the famous Antonio Vivaldi cycle “The Four Seasons” in the author’s interpretation of the cult contemporary composer Max Richter performed by the extraordinary Mystery ensemble in an intimate & relaxing atmosphere. \n\n\n\n*Important! Max Richter is not taking part in the concert. \n\n\n\nMax Richter is the composer of music for dozens of feature films and documentaries voted the best film composer in 2008 according to the European Film Academy. He changed the music of Antonio Vivaldi in the spirit of minimalism and postmodernism. Recomposed by Max Richter: Vivaldi\, The Four Seasons is one of Richter’s most famous works. After its release in 2012\, the recording topped the iTunes Classical Music charts in over 20 countries. \n\n\n\nMax Richter has recorded 12 solo albums\, performed at the London Barbican\, the Paris Philharmonic\, the Sydney Opera and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, and among his projects are the Sum opera and the Infra ballet (choreographed by Wayne MacGregor) at Covent Garden. Richter’s music is heard in many performances around the world\, as well as in the films “Shutter Island” by Martin Scorsese\, “Last Love on Earth” by David Mackenzie\, “Waltz with Bashir”\, for the soundtrack to which he received the award “Best Composer” from the European Film Academy . \n\n\n\nThe Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi\, is one of the most famous and frequently performed works of classical music. The Italian master wittily and gracefully captured in music the way his contemporaries saw the world and nature. The Vivaldi cycle is both a philosophical reflection\, and a magnificent illustrated “calendar”\, and a “sightseeing tour” of the regions of Italy. \n\n\n\n*All guests will be invited to enjoy a welcome drink before the show. \n\n\n\nPerformersMystery Ensemble \n\n\n\nThis concert can be called mystical\, because the members of the ensemble always perform in masks. SUMMARY:The Most Magical concert. Tribute to John Williams and the famous saga
DESCRIPTION:А unique concert on May 28th will take place at 8 pm in an ancient church in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The evening programme includes the magical music from unforgettable fantasy films of Harry Potter performed by the extraordinary Mystery ensemble in an intimate & relaxing atmosphere. \n\n\n\nThe soundtrack to the film was composed by John Williams. The composer wrote the music at his mansions in Los Angeles and Tanglewood and then recorded at Abbey Road and Air Lyndhurst studios in London in September 2001. The film features many characteristic leitmotifs\, most of which were repeated in the second part of the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets franchise. The main composition\, “Hedwig’s Theme”\, is present in all films in a modified form. The soundtrack was released on October 30\, 2001\, on CD media. \n\n\n\nOn December 14\, 2001\, the soundtrack was certified gold in Canada (50\,000 units) and in January 2002 in Japan (100\,000 units). In 2002\, John Williams was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music for a Film but lost to Howard Shore\, who wrote the compositions for another fantasy film\, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. \n\n\n\nThe album became a success\, peaking at number 48 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top Soundtracks Chart. In the official UK charts\, the album was at number 19. \n\n\n\nProgramme*\nPrologue\nHedwig’s theme\nLetters from Hogwarts\nSunny Hogwarts\nThe Sorcerer’s stone\nNimbus 2000\nDeep high\nBaby Harry\nAutumn Hogwarts\nLeaving Hogwarts\nSpring Hogwarts\nHarry’s wondrous world \n\n\n\n*Concert programme is subject to change \n\n\n\nPerformers\nMystery Ensemble \n\n\n\nThis concert can be called mystical\, because the members of the ensemble always perform in masks. Remaining incognito\, the musicians do not distract the audience with their individuality\, thereby allowing them to completely immerse themselves in her majesty’s music.

SUMMARY:Galapagos Day 2022: PROTECTING SPECIES AND PREVENTING EXTINCTIONS
DESCRIPTION:Galapagos Day 2022\n\n\nJoin us on 20 October 2022 to hear from the experts working in the field to save species from tortoises to birds.   \nBiodiversity loss is one of the biggest environmental threats we face today and constitutes a global crisis that needs to be tackled with the same urgency as climate change. Galapagos is one of the most unique\, scientifically important biodiversity hotspots on Earth\, yet even here\, more than 80 species are now listed as either Critically Endangered or Endangered. Though the Islands may appear pristine\, they are threatened by climate change\, invasive species\, overfishing\, urbanisation and plastic pollution. \nGalapagos Conservation Trust is dedicated to the conservation of the Galapagos Islands. For over 25 years\, we have protected biodiversity\, restored habitats and saved endangered species from extinction by raising funds and awareness and by delivering ground-breaking\, impactful conservation projects. We are supporting partners to investigate wildlife health\, such as that of the iconic Galapagos giant tortoise; undertaking vital research to ensure the effective management of the new Hermandad Marine Reserve; and restoring habitats on islands such as Floreana\, which will be the first inhabited island in Galapagos to have rats and feral cats eradicated. \nOn Galapagos Day 2022\, we will explore the threats to biodiversity in Galapagos. We will hear directly from experts working at the cutting edge of science to save species ranging from giant tortoises to woodpecker finches. \nSpeakers will include:\nMonty Halls (host) \nDr Ainoa Nieto Claudín\, researcher\, a wildlife veterinarian and laboratory manager of the Charles Darwin Research Station. \nPaula Castaño\, wildlife veterinarian at Island Conservation.

SUMMARY:"The Good Women" at Kensington & Chelsea Festival
DESCRIPTION:“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true queer love story. \n\n\n\nIt’s the 1960s\, the world is changing. Protesters take the streets against the Vietnam war\, hippies celebrate free love and a young band called “The Beatles” is rising to fame. But not in Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. \n\n\n\nBette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\nYou’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, you’ll meet two extraordinary women \n\n\n\n“The poignant two-hander depicts burgeoning love against a backdrop of political struggle. Simply staged\, the romcom plot balances witty humour\, social injustice & emancipation.” – Fringe Biscuit \n\n\n\n“This thoughtful glimpse into the difficulties faced by women in the 1960s is gently uplifting\, An encouragement to continue the fight for change.” – The British Theatre Guide

SUMMARY:My Father\, the Prince + Q&A with Lila Schwarzenberg
DESCRIPTION:An intimate portrait of the relationship between Karel Schwarzenberg\, Chancellor to Václav Havel\, a key figure of post-November 1989 Czech politics and the head of one of the oldest and richest noble families\, and his daughter Lila Schwarzenberg. \n\n\n\nThe filmmaker\, who admits being afraid of her reticent and overpowering father when younger\, uses a camera to facilitate a difficult and long overdue father-daughter conversation daringly probing into their shared past and complicated relationship. Her story of a girl\, who resists convention and aristocratic protocols while growing up in a family tradition dominated by men and hereditary princes\, is woven into the story of her famous\, charismatic father whose childhood was marked by dispossession and expulsion\, and who despite all odds became a statesman\, head of Schwarzenberg family and revolutionary. Filmed over the course of five years in family residencies in Prague and Vienna\, and Orlik and Murau castles\, the originally envisaged documentary about Karel Schwarzenberg becomes a highly intimate portrait of two people who are both familiar and yet strangers trying to find a way to each other against the backdrop of a turbulent family history marked by turns of fate. \n\n\n\nLukas Sturm\, Lila Schwarzenberg\, Austria/Czech Republic\, 2022\, 79’\, in German with English subtitle

SUMMARY:The Pioneering Pensioners
DESCRIPTION:Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders are now officially pensioners\, with Saunders in his early 70s and Fowler in his late 60s. Despite being at a point in life when most people are hanging up their boots\, the pair are still as excited as ever for exploratory climbing. \nIn 2024\, the pair travelled to the Pakistani Karakoram where\, over seven days\, they made the first ascent of the spectacular Yawash Sar (6258m)\, a beautiful peak sometimes referred to as “the Matterhorn of the Khunjerab.” \nEven more impressively\, Fowler\, a cancer survivor\, made the climb (which included a night spent hanging from the side of the mountain in their harnesses) while wearing a colostomy bag. \nFor one night only\, they join us at the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) to discuss their latest climb\, their enduring partnerhsip and their future plans (because they aren’t stopping yet!)

SUMMARY:The Friends of Holland Park Art Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:This spring\, The Friends of Holland Park once again turns the Orangery at the heart of the park into an art gallery. \nFor more than forty years\, Friends who are artists and artists who become Friends have come together to show and sell their artwork. The colourful presentation of works by more than 80 predominantly local artists ranges from greeting cards and small prints to large paintings\, as well as jewellery\, ceramics\, and sculpture. \n  \nA jury led by curator and artist Gordon French awards cash prizes for artistic excellence in several categories as well as for work that best expresses the Spirit of Holland Park. Visitors can support The Friends of Holland Park by buying a work from the exhibition or by entering the raffle for one of the tempting prizes donated by local businesses. \nEvery year\, one artist is offered a dedicated feature wall for a more extensive presentation. This year\, The Friends invited Gordon French to provide a mini-retrospective of his own creative practice to thank him and his family for organising the art exhibition for the past 12 years. \n  \nThe concept of holding an art show at the heart of Holland Park was introduced by Christopher Wood and the late Sir Hugh Casson\, renowned architect and former President of the Royal Academy\, during their respective tenures as Chairman and President of the Friends of Holland Park. \n  \nWorking in close liaison with the local borough and park staff\, The Friends of Holland Park is a local community group dedicated to the preservation\, protection and improvement of Holland Park as a place of historic and ecological interest and beauty. \n  \nThe exhibition is sponsored by The Ilchester Estates\, which is fitting as the Ilchester family were the last private owners of Holland House.
