SUMMARY:Tomi Balogh – A Reason To Listen
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome back London-based pianist\, composer\, and producer\, Tomi Balogh\, to the Liszt Institute London for a special pre-release concert of his newest album\, A Reason To Listen. \nA Reason To Listen is his most personal work to date. Inspired by his son Samuel\, who was diagnosed with a rare genetic syndrome shortly after birth\, the album is a meditation on unconditional love\, on finding joy in unexpected places\, and on learning to let go of expectations. It is a story that extends far beyond one family — a reminder that every person deserves to be loved exactly as they are. \nJoining Tomi for this special evening are featured collaborators from the album: Rick Leon James the multi-instrumentalist\, bass player and producer\, Zsofi Bartal flautist\, Selina Albright\, vocalist and Daniel Deej John on drums. Together\, they bring the album to life in an intimate live setting before its release to the world. \nAlongside the music\, Tomi is partnering with charities that support families raising children with additional needs – and this concert is part of that wider conversation. \nAdmission is free. Registration via Eventbrite is required.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Lloyd Bradley – Funk Is Its Own Reward
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening with Lloyd Bradley\, acclaimed music journalist and cultural historian\, as he discusses his seminal book Funk: Is Its Own Reward\, one of the most definitive explorations of funk music and its enduring cultural impact. \nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, a curated series hosted by ICMP celebrating influential writers who have shaped how we understand music\, culture and history. Each session brings books to life through live conversation\, context and deep creative insight. \nIn Funk: It’s Its Own Reward\, Bradley traces the evolution of funk from its roots in soul\, jazz and gospel to its explosive influence on hip hop\, electronic music and contemporary pop. More than a genre study\, the book examines funk as a philosophy — a sound rooted in liberation\, identity\, resistance and collective joy. \nDrawing on interviews\, cultural analysis and lived experience\, Bradley explores artists such as James Brown\, Parliament-Funkadelic\, Prince and Sly Stone\, while also unpacking funk’s political power\, its connection to Black identity\, and its role as a radical\, community-driven form of expression. \nBoth scholarly and deeply human\, the book positions funk not just as music you dance to\, but as a worldview — one that celebrates groove\, individuality and freedom on its own terms. \nTickets available here and currently on a limited 2-4-1 offer – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-lloyd-bradley-funk-is-its-own-reward-tickets-1987743069028?aff=oddtdtcreator \n\n\nWhat to expect \n\nAn in-depth talk with Lloyd Bradley on the ideas and stories behind Funk: It’s Its Own Reward\nDiscussion on funk’s musical\, cultural and political legacy\nInsights into music journalism\, cultural writing and storytelling\nAudience Q&A\nBook signing opportunity — bring your copy or purchase one on the night\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for an enlightening and groove-filled evening with one of the UK’s most respected voices in music writing.
