SUMMARY:Tanikō
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, November 17th the new play by konstantinos avramis will be performed at Theatro Technis in London for one night only as part of Voila! Festival. A social drama about gentrification\, the constantly rising cost of health\, and social asphyxia\, inspired by a fable that comes from the Japanese Noh theatre\, and the œuvre of Bertolt Brecht. \n  \n“Do you consent to being abandoned here\, alone?” \n  \nInside a gentrified wine bar\, three young women try to find the balance between the attacks they face by the locals and their personal lives. Their mother’s health worsens\, their brother is inexplicably missing\, and a mezzo soprano arrives to sing an aria that sounds eerily familiar. \n  \n“Who keeps breaking our glass facade? Why are they attacking us?” \n“Can you really blame them?” \n  \nINFORMATION \nwhen: Monday\, November 17th at 19:00 \nwhere: Theatro Technis\, 26 Crowndale Rd\, Camden \nduration: 61′ \ntickets available here: https://www.voilafestival.co.uk/events/taniko/ \n  \nlanguage: in Greek with English surtitles \na play by konstantinos avramis\nassistant director/dramaturge: Eleni Niotaki\ncomposer\, musician on stage: Despoina Georga\nphotos\, video: Charalampos Ioannopoulos \nperformers: Lina Boti\, Eleni Niotaki\, Marissa Farmaki \nproduction: dispositif. \n  \nfollow us on social media: @taniko_winebar @dispositif.theater \ntrailer: https://youtu.be/0marT15-bV8

SUMMARY:Halloween with Distorted Frame: Pulse (2001) + intro by film critic Jasper Sharp
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday 29 October for our Halloween screening of Pulse (2001) at The Castle Cinema in Hackney. In Cure director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s modern horror classic\, spectres infest an analog world that’s rapidly giving way to a digital one. An apocalyptic\, tech-sceptic ghost story on growing disconnection and isolation in the internet age\, Pulse is routinely ranked amongst the scariest horror movies ever made and features a centrepiece scene of such uncanny terror it has been described by The AV Club’s Scott Tobias as “the signature sequence in all of J-horror”.\n\nPresented in collaboration with SciFrights Podcast\, the film will be introduced by Jasper Sharp\, a critic\, author\, filmmaker and independent scholar specialising in Japanese cinema

SUMMARY:Fireworks
DESCRIPTION:A night of virtuosic fireworks from different musical and cultural traditions. The sounds of the far East in Dai Fujikura’s Shamisen Concerto are tempered by “a cadenza-like solo of dizzying rapidity that evokes prog-rock guitar as much as Paganini” (New York Times)\, while Tania León’s Rítmicas is based on “a rainbow of polyrhythmic inventions emerging from the Son and Guaguancó clave” of Cuba. The micropolyphonic textures of the oldest piece in tonight’s programme\, György Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto\, still sound as new as at its premiere in 1970. \n\n\n\nAugusta Read Thomas  new work (UK Premiere)Dai Fujikura  Shamisen Concerto (UK Premiere)Tania León  RítmicasGyörgy Ligeti  Chamber Concerto \n\n\n\nHidejiro Honjoh  shamisenVimbayi Kaziboni  conductorLondon Sinfonietta

SUMMARY:Access + Ability in the Arts\, Design & Technology- Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Access for all in the arts\nWith Japan hosting the Paralympic Games this year\, the world’s attention has been on disability. This exhibition highlights the people\, programmes and products that change how we think about access for all in the arts and everyday life. \nThe exhibition features British arts organisations Extant\, Graeae Theatre Company and Intoart and their recent interactions with Japan and collaborations with Japanese artists. \nCeramicist IWAMOTO Ikuko and architect YAMANAKA Akira\, both based in the UK\, show the importance of incorporating a broad-minded approach to design by explaining how their work has become more inclusive. \nIn a unique project with the Japanese Gallery Kensington to show the possibilities of reformatted art\, UCL Mechanical Engineering has transformed a woodblock print by artist KANEKO Kunio into 3D art. Visitors to the exhibition will also see how craftsman MIYABO Katsuyuki and inventor MIYAKE Seiichi have helped to improve the lives of disabled people.

SUMMARY:Craft Okinawa Lions & Sip Awamori Cocktails at Pantechnicon – Ceramics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ceramics Workshop\nCreate your own Shisa Guardian Lion statuette while sipping on a unique cocktail in this workshop led by ceramicist Akiko Matsuda.\nShisa are found all over the islands of Okinawa\, Japan’s southernmost prefecture and a beautiful subtropical archipelago. The figures are an iconic part of the islands’ unique history and heritage and can be found on rooftops and roadsides\, in restaurants and workplaces. Believed to ward off bad luck and evil spirits\, in the workshop\, Akiko will guide you through crafting a male (open mouth) or female (closed mouth) Shisa\, telling you more about the symbolism of these island talismans as you make them. To give you a taste of Okinawa\, the host will serve each guest a cocktail made with awamori\, a unique rice-based spirit indigenous to the islands\, as well as some Okinawan snacks sent all the way from the islands by Okinawa Tourism (Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau) which closely worked with Pantechnicon to develop this special experience. \nParticipants can take home their work unfired on the day\, or for an extra fee of £15\, Pantechnicon will arrange for the works to be glazed (transparent glaze) and fired. The firing process will take about one month. \nBook at Pantechnicon.com. \nAbout the artist\nAkiko Matsuda is a ceramic artist born in Kanagawa\, Japan. Since she was a child\, painting\, calligraphy\, music\, and pottery have been an important part of her life. After attending a Shisa making workshop in Okinawa\, Akiko was inspired to pursue a career in ceramics. She majored in ceramics at Tama Art University in Tokyo\, and her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across London and Tokyo. \nTickets cost £40 per person\, including all materials to make your own shisha and an awamori cocktail. This workshop will be held twice\, once at 14:00 and again at 18:00.
