SUMMARY:Phil Lynott - Songs for While I'm Away - Screening
DESCRIPTION:The first screening of a documentary that offers a fresh perspective on the life of legendary Irish rock star Phil Lynott\, showing how a Black working-class Irish lad rose to fame against the odds.\nhttps://youtu.be/d2OcIqwmSaY \nPart of The Irish for Hope series presents Irish stories imbued with hope for new beginnings\, better tomorrows and the goodness that can be found in humanity. \nPhilip Parris Lynott (/ˈlaɪnət/\, LY-nət; 20 August 1949 – 4 January 1986) was an Irish singer\, musician\, and songwriter. His most commercially successful group was Thin Lizzy\, of which he was a founding member\, the principal songwriter\, lead vocalist and bassist. He was known for his imaginative lyrical contributions\, including working-class tales and numerous characters drawn from personal influences and Celtic culture. \nLynott was born in the West Midlands of England but grew up in Dublin with his grandparents. He remained close to his mother\, Philomena\, throughout his life. He fronted several bands as a lead vocalist\, including Skid Row alongside Gary Moore\, before learning the bass guitar and forming Thin Lizzy in 1969. After initial success with “Whiskey in the Jar”\, the band had several hits in the mid-1970s such as “The Boys Are Back in Town”\, “Jailbreak”\, and “Waiting for an Alibi”\, and became a popular live attraction combining Lynott’s vocal and songwriting skills with dual lead guitars. Towards the end of the 1970s\, Lynott embarked upon a solo career\, published two books of poetry\, and after Thin Lizzy disbanded\, he assembled and fronted the band Grand Slam. \nIn the 1980s\, Lynott increasingly suffered drug-related problems\, particularly addiction to heroin. In 1985\, he had final chart success with Moore\, “Out in the Fields”\, followed by the minor hit “Nineteen”\, before his death in 1986. However\, he remains a popular figure in the rock world\, and in 2005\, a statue in his memory was erected in Dublin. \nHire Irish Musicians

SUMMARY:Here Before Film Debut at Kiln Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Stacey Gregg’s debut feature film made waves at global festivals in 2021\, including SXSW and Galway Film Fleadh\, where it picked up the festival’s top prize.\nHere\, Irish Film London presents the film at The Kiln in Kilburn as part of an exclusive advance preview\, ahead of the film’s general release on Feb 18th. \nWhen a new family moves in next door to Laura (played by Andrea Riseborough\, who delivers a breathtaking performance) and her family\, their young daughter\, Megan\, quickly captivates her\, stirring up painful memories of her daughter\, Josie\, who died several years previously. \nSupported by a stellar cast\, including Jonjo O’Neill (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix) and Martin McCann (The Survivalist on Amazon Prime\, Calibre on Netlfix and last year’s Wildfire) Here Before is an assured psychological thriller with a third act reveal which is somehow much more disturbing than the supernatural set up that precedes it.

SUMMARY:The Laughing Boy - A New Play by Jack Harte
DESCRIPTION:Dublin 1963 and Brendan Behan’s song The Laughing Boy has become the inspirational anthem of the political Left in Greece. Alexandra\, a student and political activist\, has travelled here to seek out the writer of the song and invite him to Greece to boost the struggle for Socialism. \n\n\n\nHer search comes to an end in a Dublin pub but what she finds there is strange in the extreme. This is not the Brendan Behan she was expecting. In fact she is totally bewildered when two characters claim to be Brendan Behan\, each with a different take on the legendary writer. \n\n\n\nThe play draws on Jack Harte’s engagement with Greece. In 1974 he was there to witness the fall of the Military Junta\, and 40 years later he was back in Athens and discovered the huge impact of Brendan Behan’s song – The Laughing Boy. Jack had a play produced in one of Greece’s ancient amphitheatres. The Laughing Boy is an imaginative and absorbing tale of theatrical and political history.

SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:It’s the 1960s and from the counterculture to Woodstock\, the world is changing. But not in conservative Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. Bette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\n“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true story about two extraordinary women.

SUMMARY:My Lover Was a Salmon in the Climate Apocalypse
DESCRIPTION:An Irish folk gig goes off the rails when one band member turns into a fish. Come for the trad tunes\, stay for the salmon trivia and existential despair: this gig gets weird. \n\n\n\nEverything Theatre ★★★★ “A masterclass of gig theatre” \n\n\n\nFringebiscuit ★★★★ “Informative\, energetic\, divinely absurd […] the music is sublime throughout” \n\n\n\nHumanity’s ruined the ecosystem\, but humanity’s just a dodgy side branch of fish evolution. The solution’s clear – and that’s where the salmon come in. \n\n\n\nFin’s climate anxiety culminates in his thinking he’s a salmon onstage while his girlfriend and bandmate look on in fishy horror. This could be a climate revolution. \n\n\n\nBut being a salmon would put particular stress on everyone’s personal lives. And actually\, that’s a good question to ask: can our relationships survive this overwhelming timeline we’re in at all? (Features salmon.) \n\n\n\nWith live trad music\, FX pedal soundscapes\, global industrial food production\, colonialism\, fish farming\, and probably inevitable ecological destruction? \n\n\n\nWinner of Staging Change x VAULT Award 2022Winner of Axis Green Arts Award (for previous work)

SUMMARY:Solas – A Feast of Community Film
DESCRIPTION:Portobello Film Festival is delighted to partner with the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith to celebrate 30 years of free films with a special screening of short films with links to the Irish community in West London. \nThe programme is dedicated to the memory of Niall McDevitt\, ICC Poet in Residence and Portobello Road resident. He collaborated with acclaimed Irish documentary filmmaker Sé Merry Doyle on works including W.B. Yeats: The Battle of Blythe Road about the HQ of The Golden Dawn\, and James Joyce – Reluctant Groom recounting Joyce’s marriage in Kensington. Both will be shown alongside the world premiere of William Blake and the River Tyburn. \nThe afternoon delves into the archives of the Portobello Film Festival\, with highlights including last year’s winner\, Jama The Dand\,y about Portobello legend Jama Elmi whose colourful outfits have earned him the moniker “London’s best-dressed man”; 2006 festival winner Rootical tells the story of photographer Charlie Phillips who documented the social implications of Caribbean immigration in Notting Hill in the 1950s and 1960s\, while Irish in Brent places the focus on Irish immigration in the 1980s. \nHousing activists\, including musicians Glan Hansard and Hozier\, join forces with filmmaker Jim Sheridan in Shelter Me\, a film about the homeless crisis in Dublin. Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Dougal from ‘Father Ted’) is confronted with an alien invasion in the 50s sci-fi spoof Flying Saucer Rock and Roll. Jake Auerbach’s documentary Lucian Freud: Portraits looks back at the painter’s life through conversations with his sitters. \nSelected for their links to the Irish and West London communities\, these are just some examples of the breadth of topics\, characters\, and styles of films entered and shown for free since 1996. The partnership with the Irish Cultural Centre forms part of the anniversary celebrations in the run-up to the 30th Portobello Film Festival from 28 August to 14 September 2025.
