SUMMARY:DEAR NORA + TAI HAF HEB DRIGOLYN
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nDEAR NORA (DUO)\nTAI HAF HEB DRIGOLYN\nWednesday 22 April\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/F39394c4d08b \nDEAR NORA is an ever-evolving indie-pop band fronted by songwriter/producer Katy Davidson\, and features a rotating cast of collaborators. Davidson was born in Arizona and has also lived in Oregon and California. The energy\, intensity\, and vastness of the western United States landscape imbue the songwriting and recordings. \nDear Nora has existed in two distinct eras – 1999-2008 and 2017-present – with a roughly decade-long break in the middle (the “Lost Years”)\, during which Davidson fronted various side projects and played session guitar/keyboards in the bands YACHT and Gossip. Dear Nora’s early music leans more toward pop-punk\, DIY\, confessional\, and youthful. The contemporary music leans more poetic\, expansive\, genre-bending\, and wise. The through-lines between Dear Nora’s two eras are: melodic hooks\, vocal harmonies\, and lyrics about time\, space\, capitalism\, the internet\, daily life vérité\, ancient things\, real vs. unreal or surreal\, and all kinds of relationships. \nPartially because Dear Nora’s early years happened before the rise of smartphones and social media (prior to hyper digital documentation)\, and because very little content survives this era aside from the analogue recordings\, the group is often described as “legendary” (as in\, “legend/myth”). Rediscovered via streaming platforms and word of mouth\, Dear Nora’s music has influenced many young songwriters. \nhttps://dearnora.bandcamp.com/ \nTAI HAF HEB DRIGOLYN are a band from Wales. Built atop of a DIY Ethos\, THHD have a fantastic ability to merge their musical brain with real life surroundings\, perfectly represented by “Ein Albwm Cyntaf Ni” recorded straight onto tape directly sampling the sounds that they recorded over. It’s rare for music this genuine and human to arrive with this quality and quantity; this is a special act that has to be seen to be believed. THHD are obsessed with the Elephant 6 collective\, and as such have members spread across the country; they also stumble in the footsteps of R. Pollard and D. R. Edwards. \nhttps://taihafhebdrigolyn.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:LANDE HEKT + THE POPGUNS + MUMBLE TIDE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents….. \nLANDE HEKT\nTHE POPGUNS\nMUMBLE TIDE\nSunday 19 April\nMOTH Club\, Old Trades Hall\, Valette St\, London\, E9 6NU\n7pm | £13.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/f4d01f8d742e \nLANDE HEKT has quietly become one of the UK’s best underground songwriters. On her 2021 debut full-length\, Going To Hell\, and 2022’s House Without a View\, she explored her queer identity\, sobriety\, and childhood trauma through the lens of heartfelt\, conversational indie-pop\, which led to spots opening for the likes of Alvvays\, Throwing Muses\, and The Beths. Her new album\, Lucky Now\, written and recorded with producer Matthew Simms (Wire\, It Hugs Back)\, reflects the most mature and confident version of Lande Hekt yet. “I’m not as concerned about how I’m presenting myself\,” Hekt says. “I’ve tried to think less about how things are coming across\, and just write songs that make me feel connected to myself and what I value.”\nHekt’s musical touchstones – The Wedding Present\, The Sundays\, The Replacements – remain the same\, but at the same time\, she’s delved deeper into other influences. Lucky Now is indebted to 1980s twee-pop and jangle-pop like The Pastels\, Tallulah Gosh and The Bats\, as well as to more modern iterations of the sound\, such as Autocamper and Jeanines\, in its ecstatic\, soaring melodies and gorgeous\, tactile guitars. The sound is fitting for Hekt’s new lyrical outlook\, where\, though despair and anxiety rear their heads\, she digs deep to find the gratitude. During the album’s recording\, Hekt also moved from Bristol back to her hometown of Exeter. In a lot of ways\, Lucky Now is about return – return to joy\, return to places and parts of the self once left behind. Who you once were can seem unreachable\, but sometimes you can build a bridge. \nhttps://landehekt.bandcamp.com \nTHE POPGUNS are an indie pop band formed in Brighton in 1986\, known for their melodic sound\, chiming guitars\, and the vocals of Wendy Morgan (now Pickles). Often associated with the late 80s/early 90s indie scene\, they achieved success with singles like “Landslide” and quintessential albums ‘Eugenie’ and ‘Snog’ before a hiatus. In 2012\, the band resumed live performances with six gigs. A three-track 7″ single\, “Lovejunky”\, was released in late 2014\, followed by a new album\, ‘Pop Fiction’\, on Matinée Recordings. Soundblab ranked the album at Number 2 on their Top 10 Releases of the year. The band have continued to tour and record new material\, and released the single “So Long” in May 2017\, followed quickly by the album ‘Sugar Kisses’.\nhttps://thepopguns.bandcamp.com/ \nMUMBLE TIDE is a Bristol-based DIY indie-pop duo formed by vocalist/lyricist Gina Leonard and multi-instrumentalist/producer Ryan Rogers. Known for their “scrappy” bedroom-pop sound\, the former couple creates music that blends grunge\, folk\, and electronic elements. Inspired by the free-flowing rhythms of 60’s American folk\, the aim was to find a balance between Roger’s vivid arrangements and Leonard’s evocative lyrics\, one that truly captured the bittersweet depths of their songwriting. The group’s debut album\, ‘Might As Well Play Another One’\, was released last year on Breakfast Records. \nhttps://mumbletide.bandcamp.com/music

SUMMARY:CINDY + THE GABYS
DESCRIPTION:CINDY + THE GABYS\n\nFriday 13 February\nChats Palace\, 42-44 Brooksby’s Walk\, London\, E9 6DF\n7.30pm | £14 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/yd196e6fb1a4 \n\nCINDY is a key part of the San Francisco/Bay Area dream pop\, fog pop\, and lo-fi scene. Led by NYC-originating songwriter Karina Gill\, the steady stream of releases has earned sincere support from the international press community\, who have vividly championed the writing and sound. The songs are hazy but with intent – this is nostalgic pop-craft with lyrical backbone that has opened doors for Cindy to tour and appear at festivals in the UK\, Europe and USA\, most recently with DIY recording icon\, Linda Smith. \nThe current Cindy touring band includes members Will Smith of Now\, Staizsh Rodrigues of Children Maybe Later\, and Oli Lipton of Now and Violent Change. Cindy will tour the EU & UK in 2026\, while making progress back home in San Francisco on the eagerly awaited fifth album. Cindy have previous releases available through Tough Love and Paisley Shirt Records. \nhttps://cindytheband.bandcamp.com/ \nTHE GABYS are a duo made up of Matt Wilkinson and Natasha Bikkul. They write mysterious\, eerie bedroom pop from their home in Liverpool. This is Velvet Underground-inspired electric folk music that can roll with 90s New Zealand greats like Dadamah and The Garbage & The Flowers but also has parallels with current San Francisco lo-fi pop moodists like April Magazine and Mister Baby. They have released music with All Gone\, Fruits and Flowers\, and most recently\, A Colourful Storm. \nhttps://fruitsandflowers.bandcamp.com/album/the-gabys

SUMMARY:Upset The Rhythm - Cafe OTO showcase w/ Rattle\, Me Lost Me\, Quinie\, Es\, Dog Chocolate\, Mary Currie
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nRATTLE\nQUINIE\nES\nSHAKE CHAIN (DJ set)\nTuesday 25 November\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/U19e86228aea \nRATTLE released their third album ‘Encircle’ on Upset The Rhythm at the start of the 2025. ‘Encircle’ sees the drumming duo expand their unique experiments in rhythm\, metre and tension. Rattle have honed the four songs that make up ‘Encircle’ by playing them live over the last few years\, adapting and stretching them into endlessly inventive new shapes\, playing with the concept of time and expectation. With ‘Encircle’ Rattle have grown\, writing songs alive with elemental power. They build-up and disintegrate\, existing in two places at once\, embracing the nuance\, tracing the circle’s edge. These are modes of song as pure gesture and eternal imagination\, refined in mirrors after midnight. Rattle have toured the UK with Animal Collective and Thurston Moore and toured Europe with The Julie Ruin and Protomartyr\, and have also performed with Hot Snakes\, Bill Orcutt Quartet and Codeine. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/encircle \nQUINIE released her her third album ‘Forefowk\, Mind Me’ with Upset The Rhythm back in May this year. The record is largely sung in Scots language\, one of Scotland’s three official languages along with Gaelic and English. “Scots gives me a way of expressing myself which is connected directly with the landscapes I love. It brings the songs alive and it is a fascinating language. The name of the record is in Scots – Forefowk means the people who came before\, or ancestors. When we say ‘mind me\,’ we can mean a few things- remind\, remember\, watch over or care for me. The record explores how tradition needs to be constantly reconnected with\, built upon\, looked after\, and shared.” To develop this record\, Quinie travelled across Argyll with her horse. They went on a pilgrimage of sorts through the ancient landscapes of the West of Scotland to explore the interconnected relationships between people\, ancestors\, animals\, and place. \nhttps://www.quinie.co.uk/ \nES released an incredible EP titled ‘Fantasy’ in 2023 (on Upset The Rhythm). Echoing the legendary Pylon or the later\, disco-inspired releases from PIL\, tracks like ‘Emergency’ and ‘Unreal’ blend the band’s established disjunctive style of gothic restlessness with brighter\, poppy\, and danceable tones. These stylistically unwind in transition with the increasingly claustrophobic pieces like ‘Too Late’ and ‘Swallowed Whole’\, syncopating a parallel design of the frantic and the fashionable. Es deconstruct our modern wreckage of personhood and self-deceit\, granting a sense of solidarity inside alienation. This show represents Es’ final show for Upset The Rhythm\, as the musical project winds up this December. \nhttps://esband.bandcamp.com/ \n  \nUpset The Rhythm presents… \nME LOST ME\nMARY CURRIE & THE PGs – FLAMING TUNES set\nDOG CHOCOLATE\nNORMIL HAWAIIANS (DJ set)\nWednesday 26 November\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/S8d66c1f896c \nME LOST ME delights in experimenting with songwriting and storytelling\, creating a beguiling mix of soaring vocals and atmospheric electronics that playfully weave together disparate genres\, drawing influence from folk\, art pop\, noise\, ambient and improvised music. In 2023 Me Lost Me released the critically regarded album ‘RPG’ and toured extensively in support of the release. On Me Lost Me’s fourth full-length\, This Material Moment – released this June through Upset the Rhythm – she has created an “emotionally raw” album\, her most honest and vulnerable yet. Me Lost Me presents sound reaching in opposite directions\, straddling time towards the archaic and timeless traditions of folktales\, and towards the possible and potential futures of pastoral Britain and the world at large. This is an album which uses words as a material\, a playful tool for experimentation\, full of metaphor\, abstraction and analogies. Jayne affirms\, “it has softness and anger\, humour\, hope and despair\, intensity of feeling in all directions expressed as textures\, objects\, places.” \nhttps://www.melostme.com/ \nMARY CURRIE released a collaborative 7” with Robert Sotelo last October on Upset The Rhythm entitled ‘Dream Songs’. Not only did the title capture the hazy\, reflective nature of the music it also expounds on the mysterious origin of the tracks. Mary Currie is best known as half of touchstone DIY experimentalists Flaming Tunes\, alongside Gareth Williams (of This Heat). Currie also performed in Officer! with Mick Hobbs amongst others. For this performance Mary appears alongside her bandmates Alison Craig\, Marcus Holdaway\, Nick Haeffner and William Hayter\, as The PGs performing songs from their Flaming Tunes repertoire. \nhttps://flamingtunes.bandcamp.com/album/flaming-tunes \nDOG CHOCOLATE sound like a crowded room but are actually four individuals. Abandoning notions of elegance\, cred and professionalism they embrace the ramshackle\, instant and fun\, capturing a vivid spontaneity with their music. Their sound is a shabby\, fast\, over-excited ball of wet fur falling down the stairs\, knocking over plant pots along the way and staining the carpet. With an average song time of 2 minutes\, Dog Chocolate are on to the next treat before fully digesting the last. Chewing up bits of punk\, post-punk\, noise and pop\, Matthew and Robert’s guitars race around each other like wasps\, pitch-shifting and phasing all over the place while Jono’s rolled-up-newspaper drums chase them round the room. The band have released a split LP with Ravioli Me Away and two full length albums on Upset The Rhythm. Dog Chocolate’s new album is due out early 2026. \nhttps://dogchocolate.bandcamp.com \n

SUMMARY:TRISTWCH Y FENYWOD + ANNA PEAKER
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nTRISTWCH Y FENYWOD\nANNA PEAKER\nWednesday 12 November\nSt Matthias Church\, Wordsworth Rd\, London\, N16 8DD\, UK\n7.30pm | £15 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Aec543e61aa5 \nTRISTWCH Y FENYWOD is a band of three queer women who play avant-garde gothic music using dual zyther\, bass and electronic drums. Their lyrics are sung entirely in the Welsh language (Cymraeg)\, and flicker in the moonlight. Tristwch y Fenywod (translated as… The Sadness of Women) are Gwretsien Ferch Lisbeth (Guttersnipe\, Petronn Sphene)\, Leila Lygad (Hawthonn) and Sidni Sarffwraig (Slaylor Moon\, The Courtneys). Formed in 2022 in Leeds\, where the band are primarily based\, Tristwch y Fenywod sounds like an early 4AD group dredged from the waters of an Anglesey swamp. Sapphic love and desire\, existential darkness\, political and environmental anguish/celebration\, psychogeographic romance\, pagan mysticism\, imaginal explorations of Celtic history and myth\, psychedelia\, and myriad other variations of reverie are fantasised through their songs. \nIn August 2024\, they released their self-titled debut album through Night School Records to critical acclaim and have since performed at various UK festivals such as Supernormal and Supersonic\, including two memorable nights with Upset The Rhythm at St Pancras Old Church back in January this year. \nhttps://night-school.bandcamp.com/album/tristwch-y-fenywod \nANNA PEAKER is an artist based in Leeds\, West Yorkshire\, who began experimenting with sound in 2016. Her work centers around quiet electronics\, amplified objects\, and processed autoharp. SUMMARY:JOHN MAUS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm & Parallel Lines presents… \nJOHN MAUS\nMonday 3 November\nO2 Forum Kentish Town\, 9-17 Highgate Rd\, London NW5 1JY\n7pm | £25 | Tickets: https://www.parallellinespromotions.com/all-events/john-maus-tickets-ae1479106 \nJOHN MAUS is a truly enigmatic musician. Broadly cut from the synth pop cloth\, he’s fashioned the frosty minimalism of its fabric into a cloak of infinite meaning\, genuine grace and absurdist humor over the course of four defining albums since 2006. His music is a highly mutable affair\, whilst often described as retro-futurist on behalf of the 80’s drum machines and synth sounds employed\, John’s music is more personal than the nostalgic re-tread implied. There’s a cinematic quality to his songs\, with pathos conjured through propelling bass-lines\, trailing arpeggios and of course his deeply resonant vocal. Moroder helped map out the territory but Maus is more interested in seeking cadence through his love of Renaissance polyphony and the experimentation behind post punk. It’s an amalgamation of musical ideas as radical as its intent. \nMaus is a ‘man out of time’ trying to make sense of the inhumanity of our world through his mobilisation of the language of punk rock. His aim is true as he reaches for the seemingly impossible. It’s a want to emerge as part of greater multiplicity\, to appear\, to become\, to connect that powers his songs and the man himself. It’s now been 14 years since the widely lauded album We Must Become The Pitiless Censors Of Ourselves (2011) appeared like a thunderbolt of maniacal energy and turned everyone’s heads. Now regarded as an experimental pop classic\, Pitiless Censors was a huge breakthrough for Maus as a recognised artist and led to a vast reappraisal of his past work. \nTwo decades and seven albums into his career\, Sept 26th saw John Maus release his most transcendent album yet: Later Than You Think. Arriving via his new label YOUNG\, the album explores themes of grief\, justice\, rebirth\, transformation\, and spiritual warfare – coalescing into a work of confession and confrontation: an aural metaphysics where affect\, intellect\, and spirit converge in search of the beautiful\, the truth and the real. \nhttps://johnma.us/

SUMMARY:100 FLOWERS + THE YUMMY FUR
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n100 FLOWERS\nTHE YUMMY FUR\nFriday 31 October\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/teff2cfdc2f2 \n100 FLOWERS are a post-punk band from Los Angeles\, California\, active primarily in the early 1980s. The group evolved from the politically charged punk outfit The Urinals\, who were known for their raw\, minimalist sound and radical brevity\, many of their songs clocked in under a minute. As their musical interests expanded and matured\, the trio mutated into 100 Flowers in 1981\, taking their name from Mao Zedong’s “Hundred Flowers Campaign\,” a brief period in Chinese history encouraging open expression. The new moniker reflected their increasingly sophisticated and experimental approach to music\, while maintaining a subversive\, critical edge. \nThe band consisted of the same core lineup from the Urinals: John Talley-Jones (vocals\, bass)\, Kjehl Johansen (guitar\, vocals)\, and Kevin Barrett (drums). Under the 100 Flowers name\, they moved beyond the stark minimalism of their previous incarnation\, embracing more complex song structures\, abstract lyrics\, and an eclectic mix of influences ranging from Wire and Gang of Four to Captain Beefheart and Pere Ubu. Their sound retained punk’s urgency and DIY ethos but integrated funk\, avant-garde noise\, and jarring time signatures\, all hallmarks of the emerging post-punk genre. In 1983\, 100 Flowers released their self-titled LP on the independent label Happy Squid Records\, which they co-founded. The album was critically well-regarded within underground circles\, praised for its angular guitar work\, sharp lyrical content\, and inventive rhythms. Songs like “Sensible Virgins” and “Motorboat to Hell” showcased their unique fusion of intelligence\, irony\, and punk rebellion. The group disbanded in 1983\, but their influence endured. Both 100 Flowers and the Urinals became cult favorites\, especially among later generations of punk\, indie rock\, and lo-fi musicians. Their music was rediscovered and reissued over the years\, including a retrospective compilation\, 100 Years of Pulchritude\, which brought renewed attention to their groundbreaking work. \nhttps://100flowers.bandcamp.com/album/100-flowers \nTHE YUMMY FUR are Glaswegian DIY pop legends with their energetic mix of angular riffs\, super-short songs and biting social commentary. Consisting of lead singer and guitarist John McKeown and an interesting line-up of other musicians\, the band were favourites of John Peel and recorded two Peel Sessions\, as well three totemic albums: ‘Night Club’ (Slampt / Guided Missile\, 1996)\, ‘Male Shadow at Three O’Clock’ (Vesuvius\, 1998) and ‘Sexy World’ (Guided Missile\, 1998). All three are essential. The group disbanded in 1999\, and ten years later ‘Rock Action’ released ‘Piggy Wings’\, a compilation of their best 7” and album tracks. The band have since reformed to play with a line up featuring original members John McKeown\, Paul Thomson and Brian McDougall. \nhttps://theyummyfur.bandcamp.com/album/piggy-wings

SUMMARY:LUNG LEG + UNMARRY ME + THE PLAN - Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nLUNG LEG\nUNMARRY ME\nTHE PLAN\nSaturday 25 October\nMOTH Club\, Old Trades Hall\, Valette St\, London\, E9 6NU\n7pm-10pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Uf5bde2d3be1 \nLUNG LEG formed in Glasgow in 1994 and were part of the city’s vibrant DIY underground scene. They blended elements of post-punk\, C86\, and riot grrrl\, creating a sound described as indie rock\, pop-punk\, and garage rock.  The original lineup included Jane McKeown (“Jane Egypt”)\, Annie Spandex\, Amanda “Jade Green” Doorbar\, and Maureen “MoMo” Quinn. They released two EPs in the mid-1990s: ‘The Negative Delinquent Autopsy’ and ‘Shagg the Tiger’. The band’s debut album\, “Maid to Minx\,” was released in 1997. Lung Leg’s songs are soaked in hedonistic tales of Glasgow nights out\, living life on the central Scottish edge between the dole and the pub\, the music pumped full of adrenaline. Seriously\, if you tune your mind into just the guitars\, you’ll be doing mental somersaults. But you’d also be missing the vocal interplay\, call-and-response work\,and  lyrics that read like surrealist\, grimy narratives. At the turn of the century\, Lung Leg imploded\, scattering its component members to different parts of the country or to other groups\, after a reissue of the singular ‘Maid To Minx’ album in 2022\, the band reformed with new members Paul Thompson\, Simone Antigone and Hando Morice\, playing a reunion gig in Glasgow that December. They have since featured in the documentary ‘Since Yesterday: The Untold Story’. Lung Leg will be releasing their first new record in October. A limited edition split 7″ with Unmarry Me! is also coming out soon on Second City Static.\nhttps://lungleg.bandcamp.com \nUNMARRY ME! is a triangular-shaped group\, comprising Lise Frances\, Jon Slade and Chris Rowley. London to Brighton and back again. Unmarry Me! is a group that has been together for about 6 months in a world at war and in trouble. Unmarry me! are therefore a group trying to carve out some joy and light as a form of resistance\, no small feat\, and maybe grandiose but worth stating. Unmarry me! It is comprised of personnel who have all had time or continue to have time in other groups that did not take easy routes or money and didn’t make many friends\, so it goes. These groups respectively or chronologically were and are Huggy Bear\, Comet Gain\, I’m Being Good\, Help She Can’t Swim\, Snoozers and Adulkt Life. Bands that time will record as being on the right sides of history and her story. Unmarry Me! are of a completely different stripe or ilk but comprise the antagonist and peculiar DNA that honour this. Unmarry Me! play and record and create and make do in a DIY syncretism that’s useful to themselves\, distinct and not worth talking about. Unmarry Me! is about bending\, queering\, breaking and resetting rules\, smudging boundaries and in the main having a lot of excellent fun!! \nTHE PLAN breeze in from Southend\, keeping the flame burning for the kind of askew provincial pop captured on all those Messthetics compilations. Featuring folks formerly of Wetdog\, The Ghosts and Vic Godard & The Subway Sect\, the group plays a combination of clattering beats\, clanging guitars and conversational tunes. Their songs often move in unexpected directions and are pinned together by Rebecca Gillieron’s sometimes defiant/sometimes soft vocal melodies. New album\, ‘Mountain View’\, to be released on Divine Schism in September.\nhttps://theplan1.bandcamp.com/ \nParty Bands London

SUMMARY:LANDE HEKT
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nLANDE HEKT\nWednesday 15 October\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £12.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/fbcab145bcce \nLANDE HEKT’s music is born out of self-reflection\, social and political awareness\, and her capacity for evocative storytelling. Having explored this personal song-writing approach with her former band\, Muncie Girls\, with their punchy yet tender punk-flecked songs\, Lande released her debut solo record Going To Hell in 2021 via queer and trans run independent label Get Better Records. Going To Hell presents its raw honesty amongst understatedly luminous melodies and candid\, unpretentious lyrics which contemplate\, among other things\, her experience coming out as gay. Lande’s music sits beautifully alongside such essential artists as The Wedding Present\, The Sundays\, The Replacements\, Sleeper and Sharon Van Etten. \nWith her debut album barely a year old\, 2022 saw Lande armed with a whole new collection of song-form vignettes and musings on her life and experiences with her second album\, House Without a View (partnering again with Get Better Records and Prize Sunflower Records in the UK). Kicking off where the last record left off\, House Without a View continues to explore ideas of queer identity\, as well as her changing relationship with gender\, dealing with childhood trauma\, and confronting the isolation and period of adjustment brought by the pandemic. Lead single ‘Gay Space Cadets’ daydreams about a life of excitement and adventure instead of being “forced to buy into capitalism and become a pathetic\, losing player in a game that you hate.” Although there’s darkness and sadness within the record\, there’s also some shining beacons of positivity and a lighthearted side\, albeit with a side of frustration. \nLande has toured in the UK\, Europe\, Canada and Australia supporting the likes of Alvvays\, Laura Jane Grace\, The Beths\, Throwing Muses and the legend that is Tricky. She has also played at Glastonbury festival\, as well as events for The Big Issue and Corbyn’s Labour Party. \nhttps://landehekt.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:L.A. Salami meets Stage Door Guy
DESCRIPTION:L.A. SALAMI: \nAs much a philosopher as a popsmith\, articulate and versatile. One of the premier lyricists of his generation\, he remains curious\, still distinguishing the illusory from the eternal\, the true from the beguiling; keeping the faith\, in his own cynical yet impassioned way. \nL.A. Salami (Lookman Adekunle Salami) is a singer/songwriter from London\, known for crafting magnetic blues-rock songs with a postmodern twist. His love for music began when he first heard Bob Dylan on the radio\, subsequently leading him to explore more blues and folk music and inspiring him to write his own songs; unfortunately\, however\, he could not afford his own instrument and wasn’t introduced to one until he was given a guitar for his 21st birthday. After three months of soul-searching\, tapping into different creative avenues\, and sleeping rough\, Salami eventually had his first few songs written and set out to land some gigs. Success soon came knocking after relentless gigging\, starting with a tour support slot for Lianne La Havas in 2012. The rest is history. \nSTAGE DOOR GUY: \nA Mancunian walks into a bar in New Orleans. He staggers past a guy downing his 5th neat whiskey. They form a band. Stage Door Guy is a post-punk blues duo mash up of Professor Longhair\, The Dead Kennedys and Dr John Cooper Clarke. With three acclaimed albums under their belt\, they were described by Louder Than War’s John Robb’s as: “… a quirky off-kilter slice of snarky swing with a rocking core” \nTheir latest album is the critically acclaimed ‘Stage Door Guy Beach Party’

SUMMARY:WALT McCLEMENTS + JACKEN ELSWYTH
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nWALT McCLEMENTS\nJACKEN ELSWYTH\nWednesday 27 August\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Q090a15c33bd \nWALT McCLEMENTS is an accordionist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer based in Los Angeles. His solo compositions focus on processed accordion\, creating patient and emotional meditations that nod to drone and ambient music. His debut record\, “A Hole in the Fence” was released in 2021 on American Dreams\, and utilized a minimal palette of accordions treated through guitar pedals to create glacial soundscapes and odes to hidden worlds. On his latest record and first for Western Vinyl\, “On a Painted Ocean”\, he expands his sonic tools to include lush synths\, droning pipe organs\, and spirited horns\, creating a vibrant journey from solitary stillness to community exuberance. The record also follows last year’s “Rain on the Road”\, a collaborative album with harpist Mary Lattimore\, released on Thrill Jockey. \nPrior to releasing music under his own name\, McClements has been a touring member of Weyes Blood\, Hurray for the Riff Raff\, and Dark Dark Dark\, as well as leading New Orleans art-punk brass ensemble Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship? and one man band Lonesome Leash.\nhttps://www.waltmcclements.com/ \nJACKEN ELSWYTH is a London-based folk musician\, banjo player\, and instrument builder. In her music making she is focused on exploring traditional tunes\, developing extrapolations on folk styles and techniques\, and investigating drone\, ambience\, and improvisation within and beyond folk music. Her debut album At Fargrounds (Wrong speed Records\, 2024) was described as a ‘folk-thesis for our times’ by The Quietus. Jacken also organises the Betwixt & Between split tape series\, and plays in Shovel Dance Collective too.\nhttps://jackenelswyth.bandcamp.com/ \n

SUMMARY:MICHAEL BEACH + EXPIRY + CAROLINE NO
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nMICHAEL BEACH\nEXPIRY\nCAROLINE NO\nFriday 1 August\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7pm – 10.30pm | £9 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/uc37b4f150b4 \nMICHAEL BEACH is a Melbourne-based and Californian-born musician. On his fifth LP\, Big Black Plume\, Beach reveals the vitalizing power of connection in an often hostile world. Equally informed by the songwriting of Bill Fay and Peter Laughner\, the minimalism of Tony Conrad and Terry Riley\, and the rock and roll heart of the Goner Records roster\, Big Black Plume provides deliberate compositions adorned with genuine madness. The songs on this album range from spare\, textural ballads\, to spiraling psychedelic overtures connected to a propulsive cosmic pulse. \nThe songs here aren’t stick-and-poke songs that will dry and fade on the skin\, aimless prayers for jams; Beach has been making deliberate things for decades. Big Black Plume is a record about connections\, mercurially curated\, transforming individual contributions into something strikingly communal. For years\, Beach has been carefully fostering musical connections – for Big Black Plume is out July 25th\, 2025\, on vital independent labels Poison City (Australia) and Goner Records (US / Rest of World). Beach will support Big Black Plume with headlining tour dates and festival appearances in Australia\, the United States\, and Europe\, including Gonerfest in Memphis\, TN\, Rising in Melbourne\, Dark Mofo in Tasmania\, and Binic Folks Blues Fest in France. \nhttps://michaelbeach.org/ \nEXPIRY are a 5 piece band based in London. Centred around the songwriting of Australian expat Louis Forster (formerly of The Goon Sax) the band began as a two piece with Sonny Barrett (Adulkt Life) in 2022. From early shows that featured primitive drum beats played off phones the band has evolved slowly into a roaring five piece complete with duelling guitars\, piano and brothers. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/expiry__/ \nCAROLINE NO is a psychedelic-folk project based in London and built around the songwriting of Caroline Kennedy. Recordings of the group have been described as commanding in their nonchalance\, allowing the listener to feel like they are living within the open boundaries of the song. A “unique\, beguiling sound sits somewhere between archetypal Dunedin pop and languorous\, textural improvisation” (Students of Decay) and “no-fi\, anti-folk ditties that channel an anarchic spirit” (Chris Cobcroft 4ZZZ). Caroline No have released three albums No Language (World News / Students of Decay)\, Swimmers (King Crab) and Caroline No (Grapefruit Record Club). \nhttps://carolinenohello.bandcamp.com/album/no-language \n

SUMMARY:DEERHOOF - Live Music
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nDEERHOOF\nMonday 28 July\nTuesday 29 July\nBush Hall\, 310 Uxbridge Rd\, Shepherds Bush\, London W12 7LJ\n7.30pm | £18 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/u14f27627efa  / https://link.dice.fm/I74bac87ba3a \nDEERHOOF long ago established themselves as one of the greatest rock groups ever to stride the earth\, the furiously inventive quartet releases new albums on the schedule of a young band still hungry for its first break. Their latest album ‘Noble and Godlike in Ruin’ (their 19th studio album) is either a portrait of a world descending into monstrous hate\, dehumanization\, and dollar signs\, or a haunting self-portrait of band-as-monster\, singing tirelessly of love\, increasingly alienated from that world. Songs crash and break apart\, then reassemble in surprising and delightful new fashion. \nThe music is joyful and foreboding\, cybernetic and deeply human\, all at once. Strings that evoke avant-garde chamber music and classic horror-film soundtracks bounce off guitar and bass lines that chug on impervious to the creeping dread. The drums are sometimes filtered to sound almost electronic\, but no computer could come up with rhythms so funky and dynamic\, with each minute variation from one snare hit to the next conveying worlds of possibility. The world may be going down\, but Deerhoof is going down swinging. \nFor this pair of shows in London\, Deerhoof will be performing different sets each night\, featuring material from ‘Noble and Godlike in Ruin’ alongside epic tracks from their extensive back catalogue!\nhttps://deerhoof.bandcamp.com/ \n

SUMMARY:Wasted Youth MOTH Club
DESCRIPTION:Wasted Youth play music that is “energetic\, psychedelic\, prone to semi-improvised and chaotic detours…combined with a selection of melodic and memorable tunes” (Billboard\, 2024). “The original Wasted Youth\, were probably one of the best bands to come out of post punk East London” (Louder Than War\, 2022). \nThey were hugely popular as the Eighties dawned with punks looking for something more sexy and sophisticated and looked set to become much more than the cult band they became. They pre-dated Post Punk and Goth and are still remembered as quietly-influential and a superb live band by fans. Their 1981 album ‘Wild and Wandering’ is widely considered to be an overlooked classic which has sold in excess of 25\,000 copies in its lifetime. \nWasted Youth return to The Moth Club having played a sell-out show there in June 2024. They will be promoting their new album ‘Neo Noir”.\nSpecially invited support act for the evening is Jamie Perrett\, a good friend and amazing singer/musician/performer\, who you really need to see! The DJ for the night is the wonderful Jeffrey Munday\, who will be playing a selection of toe-tapping favourites and some obscure gems. \nThis is Wasted Youth’s only London appearance this year so make sure you get your fix at The Moth Club on Thursday\, July 24. This promises to be a night to remember\, so don’t miss it!

SUMMARY:DAILY TOLL + GUY BLACKMAN + THE SPATULAS
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nDAILY TOLL\nGUY BLACKMAN\nTHE SPATULAS\nMonday 21 July\nAvalon Cafe\, Juno Way\, London\, SE14 5RZ\n7.15pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/h3d18b073edc \nDAILY TOLL are nestled between the sonic worlds of folk song story telling and off kilter\, angular rock. They are a Sydney-based band born from a curious seed\, the self taught project of artist Kata Szász-Komlós alongside Jasper Craig-Adams and Tom Stephens. Seemingly coming with an unmistakable charm and yearning. Mapping the band’s existence through their recorded output is to bear witness to the flux of three people learning to respond to one another and gently ossify into a collective vision. Early recordings reflect a band imagining themselves into being whilst new release\, A Profound Non-Event (Tough Love)\, observes a clear shift in conviction.\nhttps://dailytoll.bandcamp.com/ \nGUY BLACKMAN is a songwriter’s songwriter. His deftly constructed songs deal frankly with issues of love\, sexuality and commitment. If Serge Gainsbourg\, Tim Hardin or Kevin Ayers wrote songs set in gay go-go bars or on adult camming websites\, you might get close to an idea of Guy’s approach. ‘Out Of Sight’ is Guy’s first solo album in nearly 20 years (out June 13th)\, a belated follow-up to his well-loved 2008 album Adult Baby. Guy is also the co-founder of the very excellent label Chapter Music.\nhttps://guyblackman.bandcamp.com \nTHE SPATULAS share a percussive\, unshadowed presence\, a steady\, clear-voiced clop. Every note on their debut record ‘Beehive Mind’ (out now on PPM) is a little bit sad on its own but then they’re organized in a way that you don’t actually notice. The songs breathe in warmth and patience\, they are immediate and sweet. And then they start to meander. To address the weight of the world without speaking of weariness. To march the song to breathlessness but loosen your grip when the band wanders. To tell all your secrets but shield your loved ones from vulnerability. To dress up in the charm and temptation of the pop song but maintain a core of peculiarity\, of a single voice trying to navigate this world. This is the project of the Spatulas. Think of the few songwriters who know they’re the only ones in the world who could write their songs. The ones who sing in the confidence that the song couldn’t exist without them: Peter Jefferies\, Jenny Mae\, Ron House\, Heather Lewis. Jonathan Richman? Put Miranda Soileau-Pratt of The Spatulas on this list. Miranda will be performing solo at this show.\nhttps://mirandaspatula.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:QUINIE - 'Forefowk\, Mind Me' album launch + SOUND OF YELL + HARRY GORSKI BROWN
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nQUINIE – ‘Forefowk\, Mind Me’ album launch\nSOUND OF YELL\nHARRY GORSKI BROWN\nFriday 30 May\nSt Pancras Old Church\, Pancras Road\, King’s Cross\, NW1 1UL\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/hf599383b2db \nQUINIE will release her her third album ‘Forefowk\, Mind Me’ with Upset The Rhythm on May 24th 2025. This show is the album launch. The record explores how tradition needs to be constantly reconnected with\, built upon\, looked after\, and shared.” \nQuinie sings with a style inspired by Scottish Traveller singers. “I began singing unaccompanied Scots Song in 2015 after hearing Scots Traveller singer Sheila Stewart on the radio. Over the years I have met Traveller friends who taught me that settled people sharing these songs could contribute to raising awareness. Scottish Travellers are marginalised and discriminated against in modern Scotland\, despite being custodians of so many of our important traditions. So I started to perform them and tell this story. From there I built on my repertoire and started writing my own songs”. \nTo develop this record\, Quinie travelled across Argyll with her Horse. They went on a pilgrimage of sorts through the ancient landscapes of the West of Scotland to explore the interconnected relationships between people\, ancestors\, animals\, and place. The album’s vinyl release is accompanied by a book and film\, documenting this unusual research process.  ‘Forefowk\, Mind Me’ was recorded in August 2024 at The Big Shed in Highland Perthshire with support from Creative Scotland. Quinie is accompanied by an ensemble of musicians: Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh (viola)\, Oliver Pitt (duduk\, bouzouki\, percussion)\, Harry Górski-Brown (small pipes\, violin)\, and Stevie Jones (double bass\, recording\, and mixing). Each of these artists brings their own distinctive voice\, bridging contemporary experimental practice with worlds of traditional and early music. \nhttps://www.quinie.co.uk/ \nSOUND OF YELL is the solo project of Glasgow based musician\, sound designer and producer\, Stevie Jones. At times fronting an all acoustic collective of exploratory string and woodwind arrangements\, in this instance Stevie will play solo fingerstyle steel string guitar\, accompanied by tapes and synth. A serial collaborator\, Stevie also plays with the New String Collective\, Alasdair Roberts and Arab Strap (and of course\, Quinie) and co-directs radio-art festival Radiophrenia. \nhome \n \nHARRY GORSKI BROWN is a Glasgow-based multi-instrumentalist known for his innovative blend of electroacoustic and small pipes. In 2024\, he released a tape with Glasgow label GLARC\, Durt Dronemaker After Dreamboats\, featuring settings of traditional Gàidhlig songs for voice\, small pipes\, and electronics. \nhttps://www.harrygorskibrown.com \n

SUMMARY:NAP EYES + ELIZA NIEMI
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nNAP EYES\nELIZA NIEMI\nWednesday 7 May\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £13 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/p590cef01f9d \nNAP EYES still bring to mind the bucolic ennui of the Silver Jews and Daniel Johnston’s jittery naïveté\, but the sheen and maturity they boast lend a wide-angle appeal. Nap Eyes’ metamorphic fifth long-player collects a cache of nine fascinating songs recorded over the four years since their last album. ‘The Neon Gate’ reveals classic touchstones (the uneasy interplay of physics and philosophy\, perambulatory meditations\, self-interrogating soliloquies\, apertures of surreality\, and video games) but also evidence of divergent impulses toward nonlinear abstraction and long-form improvisational composition (resulting in their most discursive\, deconstructed\, and deliquescent songs to date) and narrative and lyric formality\, imparting the sense that Nap Eyes have transmuted\, as has their understanding of what a song is\, what it can do\, where it might go.\nhttps://napeyes.bandcamp.com/ \n  \nELIZA NIEMI is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter currently based in Toronto. On her new album Progress Bakery (out now on Tin Angel)\, Eliza knows to leave some questions alone—to let juxtaposition and tension be the proof. She playfully slip-slides through words\, sounds\, and images\, delighting in surprise\, skimming ideas like stones cast across clear water\, touching down briefly with uncommon grace. \nhttps://elizaniemi.bandcamp.com/album/progress-bakery

SUMMARY:RICHARD DAWSON + GOOD SAD HAPPY BAD - Live Band Gigs & Concerts
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nRICHARD DAWSON\nGOOD SAD\, HAPPY BAD\nWednesday 30 April\nThe Clapham Grand\, 21-25 St John’s Hill\, Clapham\, London\, SW11 1TT\n7pm | £30 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/ed6edd247a05 \nRICHARD DAWSON has drawn so many long drafts from the whirlpools of Elemental North Eastern Archetypes that he may be one himself. Fearless in his research and willing to follow his inspiration\, Dawson has created an impressive music and storytelling catalogue steeped in ancient myths and contemporary dread. A fog of sickness\, trauma\, and mute inevitability inhabits his records. It is often expressed in the havoc with which Dawson’s hands produce sounds from his long-suffering guitar\, an instrument as bruised\, individual\, and indefatigable as its owner. \nDawson’s forthcoming new album ‘End of the Middle’ (out Feb 14th through Weird World) is intricate\, evocative\, stripped-back\, tactile and almost has the transportive ability to put you in the places and scenarios it describes. The album focuses on a family unit. “It zooms in quite close-up to try and explore a typical middle-class English family home\,” Dawson says. “We’re listening to the stories of people from three or four generations of perhaps the same family. But really\, it’s about how we break certain cycles. The family is a useful metaphor for examining how things are passed on generationally.” \nThe title of the new album\, End of the Middle\, is a suitably slippery contradiction that invites multiple interpretations: Middle-aging? Middle-class? The middle point of Dawson’s career? The centre of a record? Centrism in general? Polarisation? The possibility of having a balanced discussion about anything? Stuck in the middle with you? Middle England? Decide for yourself at this concert in the intimate\, beautiful setting of The Clapham Grand. \nGOOD SAD HAPPY BAD is a band composed of CJ Calderwood\, Marc Pell\, Mica Levi\, and Raisa Khan. Their whimsical kraut punk and art rock experiments\, brimming with mantras\, cycles\, and nervous lullabies\, bring the listener into wobbly landscapes and toward spiralling epiphanies. \nTheir second album\, All Kinds of Days (2024)\, a follow-up to their 2020 debut\, Shades\, deepens the band’s collaborative approach. It builds on instrumental improvisations that each member reworks with vocal contributions\, creating a dynamic\, shared storytelling experience. Throughout the album\, the four musicians frequently unite in lush\, layered choruses and meandering guitars that add a communal resonance. \nAll Kinds of Days delves into themes of loss\, grief\, recovery\, healing\, keeping a house together\, and the challenges of parenthood\, all set against a moody\, intricate soundscape. Listeners are pulled through eerie guitar lines\, spoken word\, ghostly woodwinds\, and gritty electronic textures\, all disguised within an unconventional “band” sound framework. Beneath these atmospheric layers lies a rhythmic foundation of drums and nuanced melodies that lend drive and an unsettling beauty to the album’s sound. \nhttps://good-sad-happy-bad.bandcamp.com/ \nBook Live Bands \n

SUMMARY:BUFFET LUNCH - ‘Perfect Hit!’ album launch + LERRYN + SASSYHIYA
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nBUFFET LUNCH – ‘Perfect Hit!’ album launch\nLERRYN\nSASSYHIYA\nFriday 11 April\nThe George Tavern\, 373 Commercial Rd\, Stepney Green\, London E1 0LA\n7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/ld7ea96b139b \nBUFFET LUNCH has been writing pleasingly imperfect pop songs since 2017. It is comprised of musicians based in Glasgow\, Edinburgh\, and (sometimes) Newcastle\, and the group crafts ramshackle odysseys of observational charm. Always catchy\, often profound. Buffet Lunch has been previously described as a band that creates ‘a hodgepodge of noises’ and who are ‘lyrically ridiculous’. The group vehemently denies both claims. \nBuffet Lunch has released 3 EPs & 2 LPs to date\, and just six months after self-releasing\, the album ‘For Display Purposes Only’ returns this spring to Upset the Rhythm for their stunning third album\, ‘Perfect Hit!’ A meandering masterpiece of low-fidelity musing\, ‘Perfect Hit!’ presents the group in an upbeat mood\, as ever casually melodic\, only now with some more weighty subject matter to draw upon. ‘Perfect Hit!’ is built from ideas and plots\, melodies and hooks\, each stacked upon the other. It’s a puzzle\, much like life; you keep adding to what went before\, hoping for order and shelter. Buffet Lunch has grown into this attitude; you must wait until the end and then stand back to see what they’ve built. Now knock on the door and come on in. This event at The George Tavern is the official album launch for ‘Perfect Hit!’. \nhttps://buffetlunchband.bandcamp.com/ \nLERRYN has been a stalwart of the South East London creative scene for over a decade. The founder of cult creative space Lerryn’s Cafe and later frontwoman of post-punk band Dead Arm\, her impact on a DIY scene that has defined a corner of London has been significant. The recent EP ‘As A Mother’ (Redundant Span) is the first offering from the next chapter of Lerryn’s own life and the debut release under her name. It is a record written during her experience of pregnancy\, motherhood and a period of profound creative reckoning. This collection of songs is intimate\, sweet and moving. For this show\, Lerryn will be performing as a stripped-back duo. \nhttps://redundantspan.bandcamp.com/album/as-a-mother \nSASSYHIYA want to take you somewhere. The journey starts in Kathy and Helen’s flat in South London. Sit down\, close your eyes\, and immerse yourself… You are on your way to a musical rainforest far from Camberwell. Explore your new surroundings\, and you will find beautiful pop blooms like Let’s See What We Can Find\, as bright and vibrant as The Sundays\, thrusting their colourful faces up from the forest floor. You’ll find tangles of sharp-edged guitar as if Swiss she-punks Kleenex had been left to evolve here in the rich fertile soil (I Had A Thought). You’ll find dark pools full of lyrical complexity\, deceptively deep and immersive\, with shimmering reflections of The Go-Betweens (Perennial). Sassyhiya’s debut album ‘Take You Somewhere’ is now on Skep Wax! \nhttps://sassyhiya.bandcamp.com

SUMMARY:WENDY EISENBERG & RYAN SAWYER + KIRAN LEONARD
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nWENDY EISENBERG & RYAN SAWYER\nKIRAN LEONARD\nWednesday 9 April\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/G8802b91cafe \nWENDY EISENBERG & RYAN SAWYER came together seemingly by fate. The duo originally came together in a dream Eisenberg had\, and not long after\, were brought together in reality as substitutes for a show at Union Pool\, where they instantly fell in step. Both artists’ work traverses genres from jazz to noise\, all sorts of avant substrata and delicate songs\, each placing a special emphasis on vast dynamics\, textures\, and moods. Their performances ebb and flow between long\, improvisational pieces and composed songs from each of the artists’ repertoires\, setting the sonic intersection between Blaze Foley and the New York Art Quartet. The duo has previously opened for caroline at National Sawdust. \nRyan also plays on Wendy’s new single ‘I Don’t Miss You’ (Joyful Noise Recordings). Wendy has previously played for us solo\, and as a member of Editrix and Bill Orcutts’s guitar quartet\, and their recent album ‘Viewfinder’ was described by The Guardian as “unexpected shifts in pace mix with Americana and jazz\, with the singer-songwriter’s distinctive guitar sound driving a song cycle like no other”. Ryan Sawyer has played drums / percussion for Tv On The Radio\, Marshall Allen\, Susan Alcorn\, Gang Gang Dance\, At The Drive-In and collaborates frequently with John Dwyer. \nhttps://www.wendyeisenberg.com/\nhttps://ryansawyer.bandcamp.com/music \n  \nKIRAN LEONARD’s unique and ambitious body of work spans more than a decade of releases on labels such as Moshi Moshi and Hand of Glory\, limited-run noisy DIY fare\, and everything in between. The adolescent guitar/chamber prog of early records such as ‘Bowler Hat Soup’ (2013) and ‘Grapefruit’ (2016) earned praise from Pitchfork\, the Guardian and the Quietus\, and produced several BBC 6Music-playlisted singles. More recent work has seen Kiran attempt to synthesise interests in situated/home recording\, collage\, his live practice\, and a combination of songcraft with graphic scores\, as documented on the monumental (i.e. two-hour-long) and abstract ‘Trespass on Foot’ (2021) and ‘River Holds Peace\, Some Live’ (2023)\, a collection of new and old material arranged for an ensemble of multiple electric guitars\, cittern and double bass. Last year\, After half a decade of songs without choruses\, Kiran released ‘Real Home’ on Memorials of Distinction\, which was named by the Guardian that summer among the best albums of 2024 so far. \nhttps://kleonard.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:MYRIAM GENDRON + THE MEMORY BAND
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nMYRIAM GENDRON\nTHE MEMORY BAND\nMonday 7 April\nGrand Junction\, Rowington Cl\, London W2 5TF\n7.30pm | £18 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/B9332cba32bb \nMYRIAM GENDRON is a Montreal-based songwriter\, guitarist and singer. Mayday is the third LP by Gendron; it follows her earlier critically acclaimed albums\, Not So Deep As A Well (2014) and Ma délire – Songs of Love\, lost & found (2021). Before her debut album\, Myriam’s primary musical focus was busking in Paris Metro stations\, performing the songs of Leonard Cohen and others\, accompanying herself on guitar. Through her day job\, working at a Montreal bookstore\, Myriam discovered the poems of American writer Dorothy Parker\, who was better known for her cutting wit than her verse. Inspired by Parker’s words\, Myriam wrote music to accompany a suite of them\, then recorded the results in her bedroom. These recordings were issued as her debut LP and continue to delight listeners who discover them with their freshness\, clarity and humour. After a brief hiatus\, Myriam began exploring the complex folk traditions of Quebec (and beyond)\, recording the 2LP\, Ma délire\, which combines traditional and original songs (mainly in French) with arrangements that make space for avant-garde musical interludes by such folks as guitarist Bill Nace (Body/Head) and renowned jazz percussionist Chris Corsano. Mayday is an even more syncretic fusion of these elements. Most of the songs are original\, in English and French\, blending traditional and avant elements with abandon. Additional players this time include drummer Jim White (Dirty Three)\, guitarist Marisa Anderson\, Montreal bassist Cédric Dind-Lavoie (a fellow fan of trad/avant dynamism)\, Bill Nace and saxophonist Zoh Amba (whose horn gets the final “word”). Mayday is a thoroughly thrilling effort that creates new vistas of sound while maintaining an intimate and familiar feel. Beautiful work. \nhttps://myriamgendron.bandcamp.com/ \nTHE MEMORY BAND has been navigating its path through the folk music landscape of the digital age since 2003. Led by producer Stephen Cracknell and with a fluid cast of collaborators\, the Memory Band blends songs and instrumentals\, the traditional with the modern and the sacred with the profane. \nTheir two-decade adventure has produced six studio albums and side projects such as The Balearic Folk Orchestra and The Accidental. They have a long history of performing music from Paul Giovanni’s soundtrack to The Wicker Man and other film and archive-related projects. In 2024\, The Memory Band released ‘Never The Same Way Twice and ‘A Common Treasury’\, two volumes of unreleased archive recordings on their own Hungry Hill label\, and in 2025\, they returned to live performance. \nhttps://thememoryband.com/

DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nEVIL SWORD\nSHAKE CHAIN\nSPLIT APEX\nSaturday 5 April\nNew River Studios\, 199 Eade Rd\, Harringay\, London\, N4 1DN\n7.30pm | £8 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/B1970de44fb0 \nEVIL SWORD are Kate Ferencz and Ben Furgal from Philadelphia\, USA. Their chaotic live shows combine elements of noise\, cryptic metal overtones\, performance art\, and gallows humor and feature macabre props\, flashing lights\, stage sets and costumes. There are hardly any instruments in this group\, but they make such a racket you’d never know it. The bass and the percussion sound like they’re having a great time\, telling each other jokes. Then the words come in and it all locks together in these strange\, hypnotic rhythms. I just listen to the stories and laugh and cry and get scared and wonder what they were ever thinking.\nRecent album ‘Basket Fever’ (Magic Pictures\, 2023) features electrocuted bells\, backwards parts\, rusty horns; I’m pretty sure I even heard a clarinet in there somewhere. There’s this one part where it all seems to come back around\, where they took some gang vocals from the very first demo they ever recorded and slowed it way down. When they first started; I thought they were some goofy kids making music about the end of the world\, back when that seemed a little further away\, like it was going to be fun. They were all laughing and making these funny ghost sounds\, but now everyone’s older and the ghosts are real\, a great whoosh of bygone spirits and cold air. It’s bone chilling. There’s plenty to be upset about\, but it’s not really an Evil Sword song until that grimace has been twisted up into a smile. \nhttps://evilsword.bandcamp.com/album/basket-fever \nSHAKE CHAIN have been busy demolishing audiences and expectations for the best part of the last five years. Vocalist Kate Mahony sets that standard by anything from crawling through the audience’s legs in a bright yellow raincoat to crying and washing her hands in a nearby toilet\, as the rest of the band start the set. The four-piece from London are completed by Robert Eyres (Synth/Guitar)\, Chris Hopkins (Bass/Synth/Samples) and Joe Fergey (Drums). Shake Chain are built of nervy bass lines\, twitchy guitars that jolt and jerk and tack sharp drums\, overridden by screeching vocal slurs and sampled television. Kate’s singing is a unique embrace of flights of atonal fancy\, head-first repetition and ecstatic frenzy. Opinion-dividing arguably\, but singular in making Shake Chain dauntingly brilliant. The band’s debut album ’Snake Chain’ was released by Upset The Rhythm. \nhttps://upsettherhythm.bandcamp.com/album/snake-chain \nSPLIT APEX are Jussi Palmusaari (guitar\, electronics and percussion) and Peter Blundell (voice and bass). On their self-titled cassette (out now) release they combine restless sonic textures\, oddball phrasing within barely-contained song structures held together by moth-woven threads. Seemingly governed by an unknowable gravitational pull that tugs hither and yon\, the duo lays out their statement of intent through a brief suite of intimate nocturnes. The release marks the first work for Palmusaari since leaving his native Finland where he played with the band\, Preesens\, in the late-90s/early-00s. For Blundell\, this new project exists adjacent to his current work with Dominic Goodman as Komare and previous endeavours in the band\, Mosquitoes. \nhttps://tinyurl.com/n8cf2jhf \n

SUMMARY:Six Organs of Admittance + Bill Mackay - Concert
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… a Drag City showcase with: \nSIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE\nBILL MACKAY\nThursday 27 March\nMetronome London\, 41 Commercial Road\, London\, E1 1LA\n7.30pm | £18 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Gb5ecad0f987 \nSIX ORGANS OF ADMITTANCE have built a prolific and diverse body of work over the last 20+ years. Ben Chasny’s project is an experimental amalgam of new folk\, drone music\, percussion and strange textures\, with Chasny delivering an outpouring of eclectic releases in the early 2000s for various small labels before finding a longstanding home on Drag City. In 2003\, Chasny began an association with Comets on Fire\, which led to him becoming a full-time touring and recording band member. After recording and touring extensively with Comets on Fire in 2004\, Chasny returned to the studio and issued the moving and beautiful School of the Flower on Drag City in January 2005. Sun Awakens and Shelter from the Ash arrived in 2006 and 2007. After touring and a break in 2008\, Six Organs began what would become a prolific return to force\, releasing 18 astonishing records up to the current time. First was the release of the sonically expansive – and very electric – Luminous Night\, followed by the double-disc retrospective RTZ\, both of which appeared on Drag City. Chasny also plays in 200 Years alongside Elisa Ambrogio (of Magik Markers)\, with Donovan Quinn (Skygreen Leopards) in the project New Bums\, and is also a member of tightly-wound improv unit Rangda\, accompanied by Sir Richard Bishop and Chris Corsano. \nChasny more recently developed a card-based creative system called Hexadic for making music. He released several related albums before resuming his primary project with new work like 2021’s The Veiled Sea and the 2024 Shackleton collaboration Jinxed by Being. This year\, Six Organs also released a solo album\, Time Is Glass\, consisting of haunted\, unsettled rural folk sounds. With Time is Glass\, Six Organs of Admittance is captured once again in the intricate tangle of the fretboards\, soaring in open skies above. Like lens flare cutting through the speakers\, spiderwebs cracking the windshield that holds back all the onrushing reality. Blowing the dust away\, cutting a new path for cognition.\nhttps://sixorgansofadmittance.bandcamp.com/ \nBILL MACKAY is a Chicago guitarist\, improviser\, composer\, and singer. An accomplished collaborator with projects that include Katinka Kleijn (Stir\, 2019)\, Nathan Bowles (Keys\, 2021)\, and Ryley Walker (SpiderBeetleBee\, 2017)\, MacKay is also a solo artist creating multi-dimensional works such as Esker (2017)\, Fountain Fire (2019) Scarf (2020)\, and Locust Land (2024)\, all released on Drag City Records. Bill’s music is a visceral crackling where it meets the air\, and Locust Land can’t help but reflect its era more than any other in his discography. A restless energy and urgency are repeatedly felt — in the driving momentum of “Keeping in Time\,” “Glow Drift\,” and “When I Was Here” — while a dogged persistence radiates from the tone colours and percussion of “Oh\, Pearl.” The sense of searching\, displacement and longing in vocal tracks “Keeping in Time\,” “Half of You\,” and “When I Was Here” speak literally to the tumult of current vibrations. Within the arrangements\, there’s also a departure from previous norms — in addition to the brilliant guitar work for which he is known\, Bill plays a variety of keyboards\, from piano to organ to synth\, extending his music with the available voicings\, while enriching the sound field without abandoning his signature brevity. For fans of his singing\, following in the recent tradition of Fountain Fire and his collaboration with Nathan Bowles\, Keys\, Locust Land expresses an increased vocal presence — and heightened engagement\, with Bill’s words and melodies drawing us closer.\nhttps://billmackay.com/

SUMMARY:JAKE XERXES FUSSELL + JENNIFER CASTLE
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nJAKE XERXES FUSSELL\nJENNIFER CASTLE\nSaturday 15 February\nEartH Theatre\, 11-17 Stoke Newington Rd\, London\, N16 8BH\n6pm-10.30pm | £17.50 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Ob348d4f5135 \nJAKE XERXES FUSSELL is a singer\, guitarist and folk music interpreter who has distinguished himself as one of his generation’s preeminent interpreters of traditional (and not so traditional) “folk” songs\, a practice which he approaches with a refreshingly unfussy lack of nostalgia. By recontextualizing ancient vernacular songs and sources of the American South\, he allows them to breathe and speak for themselves and for himself; he alternately inhabits them and allows them to inhabit him. In all his work\, Fussell humanises his material with his own curatorial and interpretive gifts\, unmooring stories and melodies from their specific eras and origins and setting them adrift in our own waterways. \nOn his latest album\, When I’m Called—his first LP for Fat Possum\, and his first as a parent – Fussell returns to a well of music that holds lifelong sentimental meaning\, loosely contemplating the passage of time and the procession of life’s unexpected offerings. The album was produced by James Elkington and mixed by Tucker Martine. In addition to Elkington\, it features the playing of Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station) and Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver\, Califone). Blake Mills contributes guitars on several tracks. Joan Shelley and Robin Holcomb provide backing vocals. \nhttps://www.jakexerxesfussell.com/ \nJENNIFER CASTLE is a Canadian songwriter\, musician\, and poet. ‘Camelot’ (Paradise of Bachelors)\, Jennifer Castle’s extraordinary\, moving 2024 chronicle of the artist in early middle age\, charts a realer\, more rooted\, and more metaphorical place than the fabled Camelot of the Early Middle Ages (or its myriad depictions)\, but it too is a space more psychic than physical. In Castle’s Camelot\, the fantastic interpenetrates the mundane\, and the Grail\, if there is one\, distills everyday experience into art and art into faith\, subliming terrestrial concerns into sublime celestial prayers to Mother Nature\, and to the unfolding process of perfecting imperfection in one’s own nature. Co-produced by Jennifer and longtime collaborator Jeff McMurrich\, her seventh record is at once her most monumental and unguarded to date\, demonstrating a mastery of rendering her verse and melodies alike with crisply poignant economy. For all their pointedly plainspoken lyrical detail and exhilarating full-band musical flourishes\, these songs sound inevitable\, eternal as morning devotions. \nhttps://www.jennifercastlemusic.com/music

SUMMARY:NIGHTSHIFT + MARY CURRIE & ROBERT SOTELO + ANNELIES MONSERÉ
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nNIGHTSHIFT\nMARY CURRIE & ROBERT SOTELO\nANNELIES MONSERÉ\nSunday 8 December\nThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB\n7.30pm | £10 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/pcd6fe8e5f9b \nNIGHTSHIFT are a Glasgow music collective whose new album ‘Homosapien’ just came out on Chicago’s Trouble In Mind Records. Notably\, the band has lost some members\, gained a new member & shuffled some roles; former drummer Chris White (Spinning Coin) is now on guitar. His distinctive playing delivers a countrified energy that is central to the album\, leading the song structures into more succinct and colorful places\, matching the upbeat and playful nature the band has always drawn strength from\, only more so now under his stylish approach. Primary vocalist & keyboardist Eothen Stearn’s lyrical gifts illuminate the group’s output with an optimistic urgency that is unmatched. On ‘Homosapien’ she wears her heart on her sleeve\, but even in the song’s darkest moments\, the words create a sense of hope and potential.\nhttps://nightshiftgroup.bandcamp.com \nMARY CURRIE & ROBERT SOTELO have a forthcoming 7” EP coming out on Upset The Rhythm this October entitled ‘Dream Songs’. Introduced via a mutual friend\, Robert Sotelo approached Mary Currie (Flaming Tunes/Officer!) about collaborating on four songs he was constructing with Glasgow based producer/sound guru Joe Howe. Performing live with a set-up that will reconfigure these four compositions into a minimalist bass\, drum machine and keys dynamic the duo (and band) will also look at recreating some cuts from the Flaming Tunes era also\, focusing quite heavily on a anything could happen approach.\nhttps://robertsotelo.bandcamp.com/ \nANNELIES MONSERÉ has been playing music solo since 2000. Initially the music was piano-based and mostly instrumental. Once she ‘discovered’ her voice\, vocals became a main focus. The early songs had very simple structures and melodies\, and the words were sparse and introvert. Her debut album ‘Helder’ (released by BlueSanct) was described as “a delicate album\, complete with beautiful cracks and loads of tape-hiss.” Recorded at home in Gent between 2016 and 2023\, Annelies new album ‘I Sigh\, I Resign’ (Horn of Plenty) retains the intimacy of previous LP ‘Mares’ with it’s close-mic’d keyboards and vocals that capture every breath. Folk and early music are at the core of her sound but the palette of piano\, organ\, bass guitar\, cello\, synth and drum machine make it very much a document of the here and now.\nhttps://anneliesmonsere.bandcamp.com/
