SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:It’s the 1960s and from the counterculture to Woodstock\, the world is changing. But not in conservative Switzerland\, where women did not get the vote until the 1970s and were legally confined to the kitchen and household. Bette\, the star of a popular TV cooking show\, and Trudy\, a housewife\, are about to change that. \n\n\n\n“The Good Women” is a brand-new funny\, bold and romantic piece of theatre inspired by a true story about two extraordinary women.

SUMMARY:The Good Women
DESCRIPTION:After its successful run at VAULT Festival\, “The Good Women” comes to Greenwich Theatre. \n\n\n\nWelcome to 1960s Zürich. While elsewhere\, hippies are celebrating free love and The Beatles and Janis Joplin are rising to fame\, Swiss women still don’t even have the vote. \n\n\n\nBette – the host of a regional TV cooking show – and Trudy – a housewife with a mild alcohol problem – are about to change that – and question their life choices\, their politics\, their sexualities\, and what it means to be a “good woman” in the process. \n\n\n\nYou’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, and you’ll meet two extraordinary women. \n\n\n\nPRAISE FOR “THE GOOD WOMEN”: \n\n\n\n“The poignant two-hander depicts burgeoning love against a backdrop of political struggle. Simply staged\, the romcom plot balances witty humour\, social injustice & emancipation.” – Fringe Biscuit \n\n\n\n“This thoughtful glimpse into the difficulties faced by women in the 1960s is gently uplifting” – The British Theatre Guide.

SUMMARY:Supporting LGBTQIA+ refugees at Pride and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:LGBTQIA+ people and their rights are not safe around the world. Sixty-seven countries still criminalise same-sex partnerships and LGBTQIA+ people. Eleven countries can or do impose the death penalty for same-sex intimacy.* \n\n\n\nLGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers are one of the most vulnerable refugee communities. They face higher risks of homo- and trans-phobic violence from both their host country and other displaced people\, isolation from traditional support networks and challenges in receiving suitable housing\, healthcare and other support services. \n\n\n\nWithin the UK\, the hostile environment and xenophobic attitudes exacerbate the issues queer refugees and asylum seekers face – with reports of individuals having to “prove” their sexuality within a hostile legal system and facing violence and abuse within immigration detention. And this is without considering the recent impacts of the new Nationality and Borders Bill passed in 2022. \n\n\n\nWe believe everyone has the right to safety and to love freely. That’s why this Pride Month and Refugee Week\, TEDxLondon and The Conduit are coming together to shine a light on the challenges queer refugees face\, why we must support LGBTQIA+ refugees and asylum seekers better and how we can do this. \n\n\n\nWith our expert speakers\, you’ll learn more about this pressing issue and how you can take part in supporting queer refugees everywhere. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\n\nNancy Kelley\, CEO of Stonewall\n\n\n\nMoud Goba\, Manager at Micro Rainbow and Chair of Trustees at Black Pride UK\n\n\n\n\nChair: \n\n\n\n\nReeta Loi\, they are a poet\, singer and music artist and also the CEO of Gaysians.\n\n\n\n\n*Source: Human Dignity Trust \n\n\n\nA cash bar will be available. SUMMARY:Exclusive Opportunity: Race2Dinner Deconstructing Karen Screening in London
DESCRIPTION:Join us on for a transformative evening of uncompromising truth-telling\, dialogue\, and relationship-building that aims to open up challenging yet hopeful conversations around racism\, systems of oppression\, and white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing a screening and interactive discussion with documentary producers\, authors\, and founders of the Race2Dinner\, Regina Jackson and Saira Rao\, this will be an evening unlike others – direct\, at times difficult\, and not for the faint of heart.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will begin with a screening of their film Deconstructing Karen\, where we see the harmful and often dangerous effects of white women’s complicity in upholding white supremacy.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis screening is an opportunity to reflect on our own behaviours and biases\, and to challenge ourselves to actively work towards dismantling the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm marginalised communities.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegina and Saira will also discuss their powerful and thought-provoking book White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better. This bestseller challenges white women to confront their own complicity in the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm communities of colour. A copy of the book will be included at this event.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe evening will culminate with providing participants with the opportunity to connect with one another and process what they experienced during the screening and conversation.\n\n\n\n\n\nWe invite everyone to come with an open mind and willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. We hope that this event will be the foundation for forming meaningful community relationships\, continued reflection and action towards creating a more just and equitable society for all.

SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. SUMMARY:The Right to Protest: A Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation about our right to protest\, and its evolving role in shaping a better future. Protest is recognised not only as a human right\, but also as a powerful catalyst for change. Young people\, historically at the forefront of activism\, continue to engage in protests on issues such as the climate crisis\, social inequalities\, and international conflicts. \nHowever\, recent government legislation\, including the Policing Act 2022 and the Public Order Act 2023\, new forms of technology and surveillance\, and increasingly dispersed centres of power\, are changing how we think about dissent\, and what is possible to achieve. \nThe 2024 Cumberland Lodge London Dialogue will explore this evolving landscape of protest in the 21st century\, deciphering what these changes may mean for all of us. A panel of research\, student\, and activist voices\, chaired by The Rt Hon the Baroness Usha Prashar\, will debate the new dynamics of protest\, and the impact of new government legislation. \nOur speakers will include Dr Daniella Lock (University of Oxford) and Jodie Beck (Liberty)\, with further details to be announced. \n  \n14 May 2024 from 6:30-8:30pm at Goodenough College\, London \n  \nTickets: £10 (£5 concessions) including light refreshments \n  \nVisit cumberlandlodge.ac.uk/events to book
