SUMMARY:DAM - Live in London
DESCRIPTION:Heralded as “the spokesman of a new generation”\, DAM began working together in the late 1990s as the first Palestinian hip-hop crew and among the first to rap in Arabic. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood of Lyd\, they were inspired to tell their stories through this new medium. \nBringing together a unique combination of Arabic percussion rhythms\, Middle Eastern melodies and hip hop\, DAM Palestine has grown to become one of the most influential acts of the Middle East’s urban music scene. \nIn 2016 Maisa Daw officially joined the group with the release of their first single ‘#Who_You_R’ an incendiary critique of gender roles and social hypocrisy. Captivating and cunning\, the group has been featured in Rolling Stone\, Vibe\, Q\, Reuters\, and The New York Times\, and has appeared on MTV\, CNN\, BBC\, and Al Jazeera. \nRecently signing with UK label Cooking Vinyl (Goldie\, Groove Armada\, Trio Joubran\, 47Soul) they are gearing to release their new album Between Hannah and Mannah and will be playing at the Jazz Cafe as part of their highly-anticipated England tour.

SUMMARY:WARA X Kallemi [Palestina-Latina Takeover]
DESCRIPTION:War on Want\, MARSM UK and Movimientos Present: Wara & Kallemi \nA dynamic double bill showcasing some of the most powerful Latin American and Palestinian acts on the scene. From piercing Cuban timba to unapologetic Arabic hip-hop\, dembow and folklore\, this electrifying lineup celebrates the revolutionary power of music from Latin America to the Middle East. \nWARA\nPlaying deep into the rhythms of urban Latin America\, Wara is an award-winning musical outfit that fuels its signature sound with bass-heavy dembow\, biting synths and hip-hop. \nLed by producer and composer Eliane Correa\, the band formed in 2010\, and has since become known for powering a Latin American narrative that celebrates regional music cultures such as mambo and cumbia. With backgrounds spanning from Cuba to Congo\, Venezuela and Chile\, Wara’s performances are a musical homage to their heritage; provocative and potent\, a Pan-Latin powerhouse that’s paving a way of its own. \nKallemi (كلّمي)\nBorn on the path between Basel and Ramallah\, Kallemi emerged from a collaborative musical project between Swiss\, Dominican and Palestinian musicians. Blending deep buttery beats with world influenced percussions\, dipped in distorted unapologetic guitars – soulful\, delicate yet fierce singing added with Arabic\, English and Latino hip-hop. \nStarting as an exchange project initiated by Kaserne Basel in 2018\, the group first met in Ramallah and worked intensely focusing on a one-time show. Yet as soon as they finished their performance in Basel\, it was clear to everyone that the project would not stop here. \n______________________________________________________\nThis event is 16+. Under 18s to be accompanied by a guardian.\nULU is wheelchair accessible. \nThis evening is sponsored by War on Want & Alaraby TV.\nWar on Want will be showcasing their work fighting the root causes of global poverty\, inequality and injustice. Join the fight today.

SUMMARY:20 Years of Palestinian Hip Hop – In conversation with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere [MARSM Digital]
DESCRIPTION:MARSM UK and SOAS Concert Series present: 20 Years of Palestinian Hip Hop – In Conversation with Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere. \n*This event is in conjunction with #MASRMDigital’s Music Film of the Month\, ‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ is streaming for free from April 05-19.* \nJoin us as we look back at the fascinating trajectory of hip hop in Palestine\, the beginnings of the alternative music scene\, and the changes that accompanied the music in the last two decades. We will be exploring the spaces of performance\, creative tools available for artists\, the role of social media\, and the evolution of the music scene through a lively discussion and insights from two of the most established Palestinian artists\, Tamer Nafar and Mahmood Jrere. \nWorking together since the late 1990s\, Tamer and Mahmood were two of the founding members of the iconic rap trio DAM\, the first Palestinian hip hop crew and among the first to shape rap in Arabic. Struck by the uncanny resemblance of the reality of the streets in a Tupac video to the streets in their own neighborhood in Lyd\, the trio were inspired to tell their stories through hip hop. In 2015\, the band was officially joined by Palestinian musician\, composer and artist Maysa Daw. \nMahmood Jrere \nAs well as his involvement in DAM\, Mahmood Jrere is also an independent artist\, music entrepreneur\, and the co-founder of the Palestine Music Expo. Mahmood released his debut album Rhythm of the Tribe in 2016\, and the past year saw him release four singles. \nTamer Nafar \nThe leader and founding member of DAM\, Tamer Nafar is also an independent artist\, actor\, screenwriter and social activist. He released a stream of DIY and collaborative productions in 2020\, including the tongue-in-cheek ‘Ba’do Fi Roh (Still Got Soul)’. \nBrief description of film: \n‘Slingshot Hip Hop’ is an award-winning documentary that portrays the Palestinian hip hop scene in the early 2000s\, and sheds light on the lives of its main protagonists. \nBraiding together the stories of young Palestinians living in Gaza\, the West Bank and Palestine 48\, the film spotlights the power of hip hop as a tool to surmount divisions imposed by occupation and social injustice. From internal checkpoints and segregation walls to gender norms and generational differences\, this is the story of young artists breaking through the borders that separate them and fighting the constructs that alienate them. \nStream the film from April 05-19 via http://www.marsm.co.uk

SUMMARY:Live Theatre in London - The Sunday Art Club: Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Live Theatre in London – The Sunday Art Club: Sessions – Funk\, Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned Jazz Musicians.\n \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions launches at Arboretum in London’s West End\, offering an evening of intimate performance that provides a platform for multidisciplinary artists. The September Sessions offers Caribbean cuisine\, live theatre\, Funk & Hip Hop beats\, visual art\, poetry readings and a headline gig from highly renowned jazz musicians Tony Kofi and The Organisation. \nHeadliners Tony Kofi and The Organisation are a Hammond/guitar/drums/baritone saxophone quartet playing a combination of high energy modern jazz\, Latin blues and funk\, including many rarely played classics by George Russell\, Woody Shaw\, Duke Pearson\, Pepper Adams\, George Benson and others. Regulars on the jazz circuit have performed throughout London and the UK\, including at the Southbank Centre as part of the Pull Out the Stops festival of organ music. \nCelebrating The Sunday Art Club’s Season of Love\, director James Scotland-Barnes (Assistant Director\, She Ventures and He Wins\, Young Vic) presents a pivotal scene from Cyrano de Bergerac that explores not only the wonders of poetry but the importance of men learning how to love and lose themselves in the art of romance. Cyrano’s insecurity is one of citizenship and his Jamaican tongue in a world of wealth\, wit\, and words. Jamaican performer Akil Young will play the titular role with Afia Abusham (Nevergreen\, Arcola Theatre) as Roxane. Christian will be performed by Tom Swale\, who is currently busy creating a theatre school in his homeland of Papua New Guinea. \nThe evening will also feature Funk & Hip Hop beats by DJ Darsi alongside a display of atmospheric landscapes by visual artist Miriam Jane Camancho. Known primarily as a digital artist\, during the last year\, Camancho has worked to develop her creativity in physical art; running away from the endless possibilities that pixels provide\, she has let the imperfections of the brush and the texture of the paint texture expand her spontaneity and freedom. Plus\, there will be poetry readings from Yasmin Beck\, Charlotte Gosling and Marina Stoimenova. \nThe Sunday Art Club: Sessions are organised by Khaos\, a London-based\, internationally-minded theatre company\, with a mission to create theatre that is accessible to all. Khaos use the arts to galvanise communities to take social action. They see theatre as a movement\, a truth and a study of our existence. \nJames Scotland-Barnes comments\, “I’m very excited to get The Sunday Art Club open again and present a series of eclectic performances unique to our platform. Our September to December season starts strong with jazz great Tony Kofi. It builds on the marvellous work of newcomer Akil Young(Actor)\, who led the Guerrilla Shakespeare production of ‘Coriolanus’! Emerging from a tough 18 months\, I really hope that our ‘Season of Love’ re-engages our audiences old and new\, and with a host of new poets and actors\, we’ll be celebrating love in all its wonderful and complicated forms.” \nFollowing a successful debut in July 2020\, this unique series of not-for-profit events is a vehicle for the arts industry to reconnect at a grassroots level. It looks to build a network of multi-disciplinary artists and audiences from diverse backgrounds. \nKhaos\, formerly known as Outer Gaea Company\, is a 2021/22 New Vic Kiln Associate Company. \nLive Theatre in London

SUMMARY:MODEL HOME - Two day residency w/ HORACIO POLLARD + GAUTE GRANLI (June 10) w/ ROBIN STEWART + DEE BYRNE (June 11)
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nMODEL HOME – Two day residency\nw/ HORACIO POLLARD + GAUTE GRANLI (June 10)\nw/ ROBIN STEWART + DEE BYRNE (June 11)\nFriday 10 & Saturday 11 June\nCafe OTO\, 18-22 Ashwin St\, Dalston\, London\, E8 3DL\n7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/D89677f3b3be \nMODEL HOME is a hyperprolific experimental hip-hop formation from Washington D.C.\, instigated by rapper NappyNappa and producer Pat Cain. The duo recruits an ever-changing cast of collaborators to give each record a new feel: Model Home can sound like post-modern take on old school hip-hop\, glitchy noise or even improvised exploration. The gist of Model Home is that the music pours out like from a faucet\, faithfully channeling the chaos of the everyday thought. Model Home’s music would blend right in with a dystopia. The deteriorating sounds of Patrick Cain’s electronics would be impossible to distinguish from the constant construction that is the score of any contemporary city; NappyNappa’s enigmatic missives would be lost in the roar of public service announcements\, personalized advertisements\, and omnipresent sirens. Built on the edifice of dub sound systems and DIY basement clatter\, their sound is made up of slabs of textured noise and decayed vocals. Releases on Disciples\, Don Giovanni Records and Future Times.\nhttps://modelhomedc.bandcamp.com/ \nHORACIO POLLARD as ever manages to be absurd\, entertaining and challenging all at the same time – it’s frequently hard to position yourself as a listener in the face of this much great / ridiculous music\, and you won’t know whether to guffaw or groan. Who can resist the fun-charged pull of these primitive patterns and primitive\, near-ugly sounds? Pollard is one of the few creative people on the globe (Romain Perrot is another) who understands that “good taste” is the very death of art\, and as such he needs to be cherished like a Siberian Tiger\, albeit one whose pelt is made from artificial dayglo blue fur.\nhttps://bandcamp.com/tag/horacio-pollard \nGAUTE GRANLI channels the churning and grating of unknown presences in a field of indeterminacy into the bulk of his disorienting one-man choir\, where moans distorted by their own reverberation are sustained by the trickling and pounding of unseen forces. A new state of presence\, welcoming heightened sensory lashings that leave a strange\, indelible mark.\nhttps://soundcloud.com/verletzte-kreature \nROBIN STEWART is one half of energetic techno-noise duo Giant Swan with Harry Wright. Recent solo EPs ‘Time Travel’ (Trilogy Tapes)\, ‘Marsupial’ (No Corner) and ‘Albatross’ (ipaadai) showcase Stewart stepping out on his own with bursts of mutated techno\, cavernous dub\, industrial pulses and echoed vocals.\nhttps://soundcloud.com/djmag/premiere-robin-stewart-triffid \nDEE BYRNE is a London-based saxophonist\, composer and improviser. Dee collaborates with artists from the UK and Europe who occupy the area of contemporary jazz\, avant-garde and free improvisation. Fuelled by a love of improvisation and a growing obsession for effects pedals\, Dee’s solo project blends acoustic sounds with interweaving electronic textures and moody soundscapes. WIRE magazine described Byrne’s music as a collection of  “smudged\, sultry alto lines that conjure a Fourth World ambience.”\nhttps://deebyrnemusic.com/ \n

SUMMARY:CURRENT AFFAIRS + ES
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRSESWednesday 19 OctoberMascara Bar\, 72 Stamford Hill\, London\, N16 6XS\, UK7.30pm | £8.00 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Qafa677add88 \n\n\n\nCURRENT AFFAIRS are a band from Glasgow marrying 80s pop sensibilities with ferocious post-punk\, neatly navigating the line between new wave and goth. Singer and keyboardist Joan Sweeney (Aggi Doom\, the Royal We) tempts you with catchy melodies and powerful lyricism.  Drummer Andrew Milk (Shopping\, Pink Pound) provides nonchalant backing vocals and a solid rhythm section with driving bass from newest band member Gemma Fleet (The Wharves\, Order of the Toad). Sebastian Yami (Comidllo Tapes\, Pissy) completes the ensemble with an intricate chorus-laden guitar that will lift you off your feet. The band’s recent LP Object & Subject’ (on Tough Love) is the accumulation of the band’s output over three years\, now gathered and synthesised into one convenient disc. A debut LP proper is being readied currently!https://currentaffairs.bandcamp.com/ \n\n\n\nES is Maria Cecilia Tedemalm (vocals)\, Katy Cotterell (bass)\, Tamsin M. Leach (drums) and Flora Watters (keyboards). Their 2016 debut EP\, Object Relations\, released on influential London punk label La Vida Es Un Mus\, was described as “mutant synth-punk for our dystopian present” (Jess Skolnik\, Bandcamp\, Pitchfork). The band has since become a vital presence in London’s underground DIY music scene\, and has toured the UK with the Thurston Moore Group in 2017. ‘Less of Everything. The title of Es’ first full-length LP (on Upset The Rhythm) could be interpreted as a manifesto pledge\, an outright demand or a purely literal sonic descriptor of the London quartet’s glacial form of punk rock music. This tension between intent and interpretation has been a fundamental element of the group’s output from their formation. The dynamic between Cotterell’s bass and Watters’ keyboard is at the heart of Es’ sound: intertwining sub-zero melodies\, gothic anarcho-punk influences and some kind of entirely unlocatable aquatic component. Combined with Leach’s precise drumming\, the outcome is original and immediately recognisable. This provides the perfect backdrop for Tedemalm’s relentless\, pointed vocal style. While comparable ‘cold’ sounding groups might affect an impersonal\, safer mode of lyrical or vocal detachment\, Tedemalm’s strategy is to “push the lyrics as far as I can thematically until they become absurd … overly dramatic … while still being sincere in the feeling they’re trying to invoke. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://esband.bandcamp.com/
