SUMMARY:Black Tudors on Board: The Untold Stories of the Africans who sailed with Francis Drake
DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Miranda Kaufmann for a voyage into Black British History aboard The Golden Hinde. \nDr. Miranda Kaufmann\, the author of Black Tudors: The Untold Story\, will first whisk you away to Panama\, where an African man named Diego first met Francis Drake in 1572. \nThen you will follow in Diego’s footsteps as he pursues adventure in the Caribbean and then\, four years later\, around the world. But Diego was not the only African to sail with Drake. You will hear of at least six other African men who joined the Golden Hinde as she sailed up the western coast of South America. \nThe voyage into Black British History ends when the Golden Hinde arrives at Crab Island\, Indonesia\, where a heavily pregnant African woman named Maria\, was scandalously abandoned. \nDr. Miranda’s Kaufmann’s book will be available for purchase after the talk\, please bring cash as card payments will not be possible. \nDoors open at 19:00\, talk is from 19:30 – 20:30 and there will be time for Q&A. \nVisit http://www.mirandakaufmann.com for more information on her work.

SUMMARY:Tudor Sights & Sounds. FREE event at Bow church on 14 Sept 2019
DESCRIPTION:Courtier\, or commoner\, whoever you were in Tudor London daily life was an assault on the senses. Courtesy of ‘A Merrie Noyse’ http://www.merrienoyse.com/ and some of our very own singers we’ll bring some of the nicer experiences to life for you. \nPop into the church between 1pm and 5pm to hear music of the period – and have a chance to join in. There’ll be other fun activities too\, all of which we hope will give a glimpse of the lives of our predecessors back when Bow was a quiet hamlet by the bridge over the River Lea (long before it was the setting for Adèle’s heartbreak). Meet some minstrels\, quiz them about the music\, their instruments\, what they’re wearing – and why – and enjoy a beverage while you’re here.

SUMMARY:13th Native Spirit Indigenous Film Festival – North Americas
DESCRIPTION:WHO OWNS THE CONTENT?\nDir. Subhashish Panigrahi | 2019 | English\, Spanish\, India\, Sri Lanka | 1′\nThe real story of a young Colombian man orphaned at an early age. While he was away from home studying in a city\, he found out about a a box of cassette tapes containing his late father’s interview which were recorded by a researcher in Europe. The tapes contained folk songs and stories from the father’s childhood. The young man thought it would be interesting to digitize the tapes and share them online\, and he did that. Soon after his siblings saw the recordings online and they did not like the recordings going online. The question—who owns the content—is complicated. The narrator leaves the audience to wonder who it could be—the researcher who recorded them in the first place\, the late father\, the children\, or the community themselves whose songs and stories are recorded. \nDIZHSA NABANI\nDir. Sabea K. Evans\, Kathryn Goldberg\, Marcelo Jauregui-Volpe\, Edward Ogborn\, Catherine Rodgers\, Moisés García Guzmán | 2018 | Mexico | 45’\nA documentary project on Zapotec language and identity in San Jerónimo Tlacochahuaya\, Oaxaca\, Mexico. \nUMONHON IYE THE OMAHA SPEAKING\nDir. Brigitte Timmerman | 2018 | Omaha\, United States | 67’\n“Our Language is Sacred\, no one can take it from us.”–Omaha Elder. Only a handful of Native American fluent speakers remain of the Omaha Tribe. Fluent speaking elders reflect on growing up speaking their native language\, the efforts that was taken from the government to phase it out and why it is so important to preserve it. Hopefulness is expressed by the elders and a dedicated group of educators attempts to keep their language alive. \nVOICES OF OUR ANCESTORS\nJoe Yates | 2018 | Yup’ik & Haida\, United States | 13’\nYup’ik\, Inupiat\, Tlingit\, Alutiiq\, Koyukon\, Aleut\, Tsimshian\, Gwich’in\, Haida… Alaska is home to more than 20 Native languages. From the fjords in the Southeast to the northern tundra where it meets the Arctic Ocean\, Alaskan languages have been spoken and sung for tens of thousands of years. See first-hand how important your Native language is and the effect on the way you live – a bi-cultural marriage begins to teach their daughter the heartbeat of their culture by revitalizing their language. \nBIMAADIZIWIN (THE LANGUAGE) – WAPIKONI MOBILE\nMary-Agnes Shawana | 2018 | Anishnabe\, Canada | 4’\nFilmed during the Sheguiandah Annual Jiingtamok\, this film explores what the Anishinaabemowin language means to its speakers\, and why it is so important to promote and preserve it\, as it is an integral part of Wiikwemkoong’s culture\, history\, and identity. \nLEARNING DENE AND THE TALE OF THE RAVEN – WAPIKONI MOBILE\nThe Wapikoni team | 2017 | Innu\, Canada | 5’\nLearning Dene can be quite difficult\, but thankfully the children can rely on their elders for storytelling in their native language.

SUMMARY:
Brutal Beauty: A Video Tour of the Czech and Slovak Embassies in London + live Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of one of the prime examples of Brutalist architecture in London\, discover what’s hiding behind the facade of the Czech and Slovak Embassies. \nOwen Hatherley\, architecture critic and author of Landscapes of Communism: A History through Buildings\, will guide you through the recently refurbished London Czech Embassy from its spectacular roof terrace with iconic water towers to the original cinema in the basement\, exploring also the original interior of the Slovak Embassy where raw concrete is juxtaposed with artistic and decorative elements. \nDesigned by the leading Czech architects Jan Šrámek\, Jan Bočan and Karel Štěpánský\, in collaboration with the architect of the Royal Festival Hall\, Robert Mathew\, it marked a significant redevelopment in the Notting Hill Gate area in the late ‘60s. \nLooking back to pre-war Czech Modernism and post-war architecture\, Owen Hatherley will discuss its influence in Britain while exploring the obtuse angles and concrete details of the building designed in accordance with the prevailing architectural trends and representing the best of Brutalist architecture. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with the Czech and Slovak Embassies in London and the London Festival of Architecture. \nTo receive a reminder and ZOOM link for the discussion\, book via Eventbrite:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brutal-beauty-a-video-tour-of-the-czech-and-slovak-embassies-in-london-tickets-151604780981

SUMMARY:Mendoza Mania -Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Come and join our exciting Immersive Exhibition Day on September 18th to celebrate the life of local boxing legend Daniel Mendoza. \n\n\n\nThe immersive event in Paradise Gardens is a community-focused celebration of the life and times of Portuguese Jewish bare-knuckle boxer Daniel Mendoza (1764-1836)\, who helped make the sport what it is today and was the first true sporting celebrity in Britain. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is a way to engage the wider community in the histories of boxing and the Jewish connection to the East End dating back to Mendoza’s time and to explore how community members from a wide range of backgrounds are today “fighting back” against racism\, discrimination and other challenges they encounter. \n\n\n\nQR codes placed on trees in Paradise Gardens will connect to a site where visitors can listen to extracts from Mendoza’s memoirs and oral histories of local people whose experiences relate closely to Mendoza’s. \n\n\n\nThere will also be workshops happening between 12 pm-4 pm which will be family-friendly\, celebrate Daniel Mendoza and include poetry\, readings\, art and craft! \n\n\n\nAll these events are accessible\, family-friendly\, and open to all. You’ll be sent a fill programme closer to the day when you sign up. \n\n\n\nYou can come along for as long or as little time as you like. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about the event or access\, email stuart@stmargaretshouse.org.uk \n\n\n\nMendoza Mania is a project supported by the National Heritage Lottery Fund.

SUMMARY:Charles I and the Civil Wars: The World Turned Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:At 2 pm\, on Tuesday 30 January 1649\, King Charles I stepped onto a wooden scaffold outside Whitehall’s Banqueting House\, knelt in front of thousands of spectators and was publicly beheaded as a traitor. It was the brutal climax of years of civil war\, which had seen tens of thousands of people lose their lives and livelihoods as the kingdoms of England\, Wales\, Scotland and Ireland were plunged into chaos. \nIn this fascinating collaboration with the Museum of London Docklands and HistFest\, bestselling authors Jessie Childs and Leanda de Lisle\, and critically acclaimed playwright and history teacher Thabo Stuck will explore the complex events that led to the fateful moment of Charles’s execution. From the sweeping history of the civil wars and the human stories of debates\, battles and sieges to the mood within the royal court\, the character of Charles I himself\, the resilience of his wife Henrietta Maria\, and the decade-long republican rule that followed. \nIncluding music from Thabo Stuck’s critically acclaimed play\, #50Days\, a panel discussion and immersive re-enactment from the English Civil War Society\, discover the realities of a world turned upside down. There will be an opportunity to purchase the authors’ books at the end of the talk. \nThere are also digital tickets available to watch a livestream of the event. \n  \nAbout \nThabo Stuck is a history teacher from London and the creator and writer of #50Days. #50Days\, Thabo’s debut writing project\, is a Grime Musical that tells the story of the period that leads up to the outbreak of the 17th Century British Civil Wars. Using Grime music\, this show gives underrepresented Brits a voice in telling the story of one of the most integral but often misunderstood narratives of our nation. Described by The Independent as ‘a hurtling exploration of politics and revolution’. \nJessie Childs is an award-winning author\, historian and broadcaster. Her first book\, Henry VIII’s Last Victim\, won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography\, and her second\, God’s Traitors\, won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History. Her third book\, The Siege of Loyalty House: A Civil War Story\, was published in May and hailed by Simon Schama as ‘almost Tolstoyan in its emotional intelligence and literary power’. Jessie reviews for many papers\, including the Sunday Times\, Guardian and London Review of Books\, and her TV contributions include the BAFTA-nominated Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents (BBC 2 & PBS) and two BBC series on Charles I. \nLeanda de Lisle is the author of the bestselling Tudor and Stuart history praised for meticulous research as well as strong narratives. She has a Masters degree in history from Oxford University. TUDOR\, her biography of the Tudor family 1437-1603\, was a top ten Sunday Times bestseller\, BBC History book of the year\, Daily Telegraph book of the year\, and History Today book of the year. THE SISTERS WHO WOULD BE QUEEN; THE TRAGEDY OF MARY\, KATHERINE AND LADY JANE GREY\, was a New York Times best seller and is the inspiration for Phillippa Gregory’s 2017 novel THE LAST TUDOR as well as Elizabeth Fremantle’s Sisters of Treason. WHITE KING\, a biography of the doomed Charles I\, was the winner of the 2018 Historical Writers Association non-fiction crown. Her latest\, on Henrietta Maria\, is a revisionist biography of a reviled queen and a Times and Sunday Times book of the year. \n  \nHistFest is an innovative history festival and events company\, which produces online and in-person events and courses for global audiences. \nThe English Civil War Society bring history to life through the authentic re-creation of 17th-century military and civil life\, stimulating interest in the turbulent period in British history when the country was torn apart by civil war. \n

SUMMARY:Compositor E
DESCRIPTION:It is 1623\, and 17-year old John has come to London to work as an apprentice typesetter\, under the mentorship of printer Isaac Jaggard. But while he’s desperate to develop his craft\, it’s becoming apparent that John is suffering from some kind of trauma. And with a potentially game-changing new commission on his hands\, Isaac does not have time for emotions. \nHaving persuaded Isaac to let him progress to setting from a confusing manuscript of ‘Macbeth’\, John’s trauma begins to spill out onto the print shop floor. Why were those men so scared of his mother? And why are these children scurrying around with sheets of drying ink called… ‘devils’? \nA play about the hidden fingerprints of history – produced in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the publication of the First Folio – that asks who the storytellers really are.

SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. Advertised end times may be subject to change.\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack History Month 2023 #SalutingOurSisters
