SUMMARY:Active Involvement in Research (AIRD) 2024: in person and online health conference
DESCRIPTION:Our annual Active Involvement in Research events bring together patients\, service users\, carers\, local people\, researchers\, health and care professionals\, and organisations in south London and beyond. \nThis year’s theme is ‘Improving health and care in south London\, shaping future research.’ \nFor several years\, Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London has researched how various types of health and social care might be improved and inequalities tackled. \nStaff\, public contributors\, the community\, and other partners have worked hard to successfully understand and achieve change for local people who experience a range of issues. This includes those with multiple conditions and those facing disadvantage and discrimination that affects their well-being. But many south Londoners are still at risk and face barriers to getting the treatment and support they need. \nThis year\, Active Involvement in Research will look at: \n\nWhat the focus of future work should be from April 2026 to March 2031\, if funding is available\nHow can we\, our community and other partners build on local strengths and direct limited resources to address current challenges in useful ways? This includes not duplicating what other research teams and organisations have done.\nHow can we further develop active involvement and recognise the value of lived experience in future research?\n\nThis is the second of two events. It will be held online on 18 November 2024\, following the in-person event on 13 November. \nYou are welcome to join us at either or both events to hear about thinking to date and share your views\, which will help to shape future research. Further information will follow\, but places are limited\, so booking early is advisable. \nAttendance is free\, and all are welcome. \nFind out more \n\nTo find out more about the event\, please email involvement coordinator savitri.hensman@kcl.ac.uk. You can also visit www.arc-sl.nihr.ac.uk\nPlease note: Payments will be made to public members who have agreed on a role.

SUMMARY:Active Involvement in Research (AIRD) 2024: in person event
DESCRIPTION:The annual Active Involvement in Research event brings together patients\, service users\, carers and local people\, researchers\, health and care professionals and organisations\, in south London and beyond. \nThe theme this year is: ‘Improving health and care in south London\, shaping future research.’ \nFor several years\, Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) South London has carried out research on how various types of health and social care might be improved and inequalities tackled. \nStaff\, public contributors\, community and other partners have worked hard to successfully understand and achieve change for local people who experience a range of issues. This includes those with multiple conditions and those facing disadvantage and discrimination which affects their wellbeing. This includes not duplicating what other research teams and organisations are doing or have done\nHow can we further develop active involvement\, and recognise the value of lived experience\, in future research?\n\nThis is the first of two events. It will be held in person on 13 November 2024. The Active Involvement in Research: online event will follow on 18 November 2024. \nYou are welcome to join us at either or both events to hear about thinking to date and share your own views\, which will help to shape future research. Further information will follow\, but places are limited so it is advisable to book early. \nAttendance is free and all are welcome. \nFind out more \n\nTo find out more about the event\, please email involvement coordinator savitri.hensman@kcl.ac.uk. You can also visit www.arc-sl.nihr.ac.uk\nPlease note: payments will be made to public members who have an agreed role.

DESCRIPTION:Plant-filled paradise offers natural respite for busy city-goers  \n\n\n\nA new experiential pop-up\, promising a plant-packed\, nature-filled detox experience\, is set to open in Potters Fields Park\, Southwark\, on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 November. \n\n\n\nThe Serene House\, which is free to the general public\, offers a glorious celebration of all things green and gives guests the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and enjoy a moment of relaxation in nature. Visitors are invited to try out two of the hottest natural wellbeing trends: earthing and forest bathing – both promising a 10-minute escape from the city – in the very heart of it. \n\n\n\nDeveloped in partnership with The Joy of Plants and Funny How Flowers Do That\, the two-day pop-up\, open from 10.00am to 6.00pm\, 2-3 November\, provides a natural respite for busy urban dwellers and visitors to the city. \n\n\n\nThe specially adapted greenhouse has been designed by Chelsea Flower Show winner Ian Drummond\, who has selected a range of houseplants and fresh-cut flowers renowned for their wellbeing and mood-boosting properties. Giving guests a welcome boost as we move into the darker days of winter. \n\n\n\nInside\, the Serene House is a cornucopia of different flora with several varieties on show. What’s more\, the experiential is part of a “nature takeover” of London – a project that is being mirrored in several European cities – which aims to address new research revealing that the average Brit spends just 32 minutes in nature per day\, despite 63 per cent stating they think it is important to spend time in nature to boost your mental health. \n\n\n\nFor those interested in attending\, simply head on down to Potters Fields Park on Thursday 2 or Friday\, where The Joy of Plants and Funny How Flowers Do That teams will be on hand to guide you through the experience. \n\n\n\nTo learn more about the pop-up\, as well as the wider initiative\, visit https://www.thejoyofplants.co.uk/serene-house. \n\n\n\nWhat: The Serene House: an immersive indoor jungle\, with earthing and forest bathing experiences \n\n\n\nWhere: Potters Fields Park\, Southwark \n\n\n\nWhen: 2-3 November\, 10.00am to 6.00pm \n\n\n\nPrice: FREE

DESCRIPTION:Join us at our brand-new masterclasses and learn what science has to say about health and well-being. Join us for one session or the whole day and start your journey towards a healthier you. \n\n\n\nTopics covered will include: \n\n\n\nMorning session: diet and exercise \n\n\n\n\nPersonalised nutrition\n\n\n\nExercise and diet\n\n\n\nWeight loss medicine\n\n\n\n\nAfternoon session: wellbeing \n\n\n\n\nOptimising sleep\n\n\n\nYour immune system\n\n\n\nHow to be happy\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nMorning session: Diet and exercise\, talks and speakers: \n\n\n\nPersonalised nutrition\n\n\n\nKate Bermingham\, Research Associate\, King’s College London \n\n\n\nWhat role does our individual microbiome play in shaping our unique responses to food relative to ‘what’ we eat\, ‘who’ we are and ‘how’ we eat? \n\n\n\nCan you outrun a bad diet?\n\n\n\nDylan Thompson\, Professor of Human Physiology\, University of Bath \n\n\n\nWhat is the role of exercise in keeping us healthy? Is it possible to eat a ‘poor’ diet\, with excess calories but offset it by increasing your physical exercise? \n\n\n\nNew obesity drugs- what’s the evidence?\n\n\n\nSimon Cork\, Senior Lecturer in Physiology\, Anglia Ruskin University \n\n\n\nSemaglutide (also known by brand names such as Wegovy and Ozempic) is a medication for type 2 diabetes that has recently been approved to treat obesity. Results have been dramatic\, showing a 15 per cent reduction in body weight over a year when combined with exercise and eating healthily. In this talk\, we’ll explore how this medication works\, what side effects it has and if it is really the solution to the obesity epidemic. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAfternoon session: Wellbeing\, talks and speakers: \n\n\n\nOptimising Sleep: Unravelling the Neuroscience and enhancing sleep habits\n\n\n\nNicola Barclay\, Lecturer in Sleep Medicine\, the Sleep and Circadian Neuroscience Institute\, University of Oxford \n\n\n\nNicola Barclay will delve into the fascinating world of sleep\, exploring its intricate neuroscience\, the importance of sufficient sleep\, common sleep problems\, and evidence-based strategies to improve sleep quality. By combining research-based findings with therapeutic techniques\, she will provide practical insights for optimising sleep and its impact on overall well-being. \n\n\n\nYour immune system – Can it be “boosted”?
