DESCRIPTION:Portobello Film Festival is delighted to partner with the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith to celebrate 30 years of free films with a special screening of short films with links to the Irish community in West London. \nThe programme is dedicated to the memory of Niall McDevitt\, ICC Poet in Residence and Portobello Road resident. He collaborated with acclaimed Irish documentary filmmaker Sé Merry Doyle on works including W.B. Yeats: The Battle of Blythe Road about the HQ of The Golden Dawn\, and James Joyce – Reluctant Groom recounting Joyce’s marriage in Kensington. Both will be shown alongside the world premiere of William Blake and the River Tyburn. \nThe afternoon delves into the archives of the Portobello Film Festival\, with highlights including last year’s winner\, Jama The Dand\,y about Portobello legend Jama Elmi whose colourful outfits have earned him the moniker “London’s best-dressed man”; 2006 festival winner Rootical tells the story of photographer Charlie Phillips who documented the social implications of Caribbean immigration in Notting Hill in the 1950s and 1960s\, while Irish in Brent places the focus on Irish immigration in the 1980s. \nHousing activists\, including musicians Glan Hansard and Hozier\, join forces with filmmaker Jim Sheridan in Shelter Me\, a film about the homeless crisis in Dublin. Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Dougal from ‘Father Ted’) is confronted with an alien invasion in the 50s sci-fi spoof Flying Saucer Rock and Roll. Jake Auerbach’s documentary Lucian Freud: Portraits looks back at the painter’s life through conversations with his sitters. \nSelected for their links to the Irish and West London communities\, these are just some examples of the breadth of topics\, characters\, and styles of films entered and shown for free since 1996. The partnership with the Irish Cultural Centre forms part of the anniversary celebrations in the run-up to the 30th Portobello Film Festival from 28 August to 14 September 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday 15th May for a day of fun and food at our Activity Centre on Greyhound Road! \nThe event is open to people of all ages\, and we would love to see you and your family there. You can pop in for a short visit or stay for the whole thing\, and it is free to attend. However\, we ask that you please register online to let us know you’ll be stopping by. You can also call 020 7386 9085 to tell us you would like to attend. \nStalls will include:\nTombola\nLucky Dip\nBeat the Goalie\nName the Teddy and much more. \nThere will also be plenty of food\, including a delicious BBQ and a selection of tasty cakes. \nWe are currently looking for donations for prizes and people to bake cakes. If you can donate a prize or would like to bake for us\, please get in touch with Sarah at sarah@ageukhf.org.uk. \nThank you for being so supportive in ensuring older people can access everything they need to enjoy later in life. We look forward to welcoming you to our Spring BBQ on 15th May!

The Grove bar and restaurant is an award-winning restaurant\, which is often visited by celebrities\, such as: Alan Sugar\, Adrian Charles\, Bill Bailey and Olly Murs. \nComedy night starts at 8 and finishes at 9pm. Show features up and coming comedians on the London scene. If you are wondering what a night of Instant laughs is like\, well\, take a peek:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acmgKSaAQow. \nTo ensure a safe and fun evening\, could you please ensure the following: \n– You visit our venue only if you or anyone you have been in contact with are not showing symptoms of COVID-19. \n– You use our sanitiser stations that are provided on arrival and around the venue for your safety and convenience. \n-Respect one another’s personal space\, and keep your distance where indicated. \n– We will be using digital thermometers to check comedians and audiences temperature as they come into the gig. \n– You arrive on time at 8pm\, we don’t start when you arrive. Be punctual. \n– You understand the venue reserve the right to refuse admission / service. \n– Drink responsibly. \n– We will be taking down your name and phone number. This is so we can keep track of who has come in and out each show.

SUMMARY:Arts & Crafts jewellery’s unique place in British history
DESCRIPTION:Live\, interactive online talk at Emery Walker’s House will set the scene with a snapshot of the jewellery industry in the run up to the Arts & Crafts movement\, giving context to the protagonists’ work which was responding to the social\, economic and political issues of the day. It will go on to cover the foremost features of Arts & Crafts jewellery and where it stands in the current market. \n“The Arts & Crafts movement was hugely reactionary against the trends which had been permeating the British jewellery market for decades\,” Sarah explains\, “ The resulting jewels have a unique place in the history of British jewellery with their craftsmanship taking centre stage. This talk will aim to examine the overall state of the jewellery market in the late 19th / early 20th century and the place Arts & Crafts jewellers and jewels have within it.” \nSarah is kindly supporting this series of online talks at Emery Walker’s House as she says\, “I’ve visited the Emery Walker house more than once now and every time I find it breath-taking.” \n“As a local resident\, it is such a treat to have this treasure on our doorsteps. The role the Walkers played\, along with other local residents\, in defining the Arts & Crafts movement is truly unique. For so much of their home to have been preserved unaltered for nearly a century gives us a unique gifted insight into the lives of these innovators.” as she is an admirer of by its Arts & Crafts interiors.” \n“ I love Arts and Crafts furniture and jewellery as its all about the craftsmanship. The jewellery does not come up often at auction\, but what sets it aside is it offers both an aesthetic and physical appeal\, the pieces are very tactile.” \nThe talk will cover a range of designers and makers including May Morris\, who lived at 8 Hammersmith Terrace and was good friends of the Walkers who resided next door at number 7. “I like to think she is a neighbour”\, says Sarah\, who originally hails from Florida\, but was drawn to West London by its rich artistic heritage and moved from Hammersmith to Chiswick six years ago. \nWith the new normal meaning most of us are currently communicating via the internet and visible from the neck up\, maybe this is the time to invest in a new necklace or earrings.
