SUMMARY:Gathering Wands: Walk and Carving Workshop with Harri Harrison
DESCRIPTION:Centred on Harri Harrison’s sculptural Wands series in the group exhibition The House at IMT Gallery\, this workshop invites a shared evening of wandering\, foraging and making. \nThe workshop begins with a twilight walk through Victoria Park\, led by multimedia artist Harri Harrison. Moving along desire paths\, the group will allow themselves to wander off the obvious routes\, gathering found natural materials along the way. These paths offer a subtle\, gentle form of resistance\, a space for slower attention and observation. \nReturning to IMT Gallery\, we will gather our foraged materials and create our own wands using a combination of carving and binding techniques. The session concludes with a guided meditation and meditative drawing exercise. Together we will explore what it means to hold found natural materials\, noticing how our focus shifts between objects\, ourselves\, and the connections they hold.  \nNo previous experience needed\, and natural materials and tools will be provided. Feel free to bring your preferred drawing materials and any found items you would like to work with\, such as stones\, sticks\, shells\, dried flowers\, wood\, or string for binding. Please wear suitable footwear and clothing for walking\, as paths may be slightly muddy. If you have any questions or specific access needs\, please feel free to get in touch. \nAbout Harri Harrison: \nHarri Harrison is a multimedia artist whose practice integrates performance\, text-based projections\, plant-based work\, and alternative photography processes\, engaging directly with urban environments. Harri explores notions of place\, community\, grief\, gratitude\, and belonging\, inviting us to reconsider our relationship to nature and future communities.  \nHarri has over 13 years of experience leading creative workshops\, collaborating with institutions such as Cubitt Gallery\, PEER Gallery\, and Phytology at Bethnal Green Nature Reserve. \nGathering Wands is open to all — wanderers\, makers\, quiet explorers\, and anyone curious to slow down\, attend to the everyday\, hold attention\, and reflect through making.  \nSpaces are limited. Reserve your place for an evening of quiet attention.

DESCRIPTION:This September Kingston Society will be encouraging residents to shape where they live and work as they explore the week-long What If? installation in central Kingston. Organised as part of both the London Design Festival’s annual series of city-wide events and Kingston 2025 celebrations\, What If? invites those most affected by change to join the creative conversation and feel empowered to influence their community.\nOver a thought-provoking programme that includes talks and walks\, visitors will be able to journey through Kingston’s past\, reflect on present development challenges\, and discover their potential to influence the borough’s future.\nInspired by the concept of an Urban Room\, the week-long installation (13-20 September) will be organised into five creative zones that explore place and possibilities – all in collaboration with local designers\, artists\, architects\, students and innovators.\nThe programme also includes a series of free walks and talks that explore the link between good design and local pride. SUMMARY:Brick Lane Bookshop presents ‘Sunday Strolls: So you want to go to Columbia Road?’
DESCRIPTION:Brick Lane Bookshop presents ‘Sunday Strolls: So you want to go to Columbia Road?’\, an alternative guided tour of one of the East End’s most popular destinations. \n\n\n\nSo\, you want to go to Columbia Road?  And who can blame you? That nice young couple with a baby struggling to push a fully grown palm tree onto a number eight bus tells you you’re not far from Britain’s biggest flower and plant market\, which only trades on Sunday mornings. But we’re not going to take the direct route. We’re going to follow some diverting diversions which show how much secret history can be found down some seemingly nondescript side streets any day of the week. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a ninety-minute walk of paths\, turnings\, and tales less told. You’ll visit a graffiti gallery most visitors miss\, see a sad\, inspirational statue\, and meet two extraordinary characters\, one nasty and one nice! \n\n\n\nFOR TWO WEEKENDS ONLY – SUNDAY THE 6th AND 13th OF AUGUST AT NOON.  \n\n\n\nTours start at Brick Lane Bookshop and are limited to small groups\, so please book early to avoid disappointment. \n\n\n\nPlease note although not a long walk\, the route includes two sets of stairs.

SUMMARY:The Thin Veil of London
DESCRIPTION:An unusual walk around the lesser-known corners of Holborn and Bloomsbury\, interwoven with mysteries from the stories of Arthur Machen. \n\n\n\n‘The best-guided walk I’ve ever been on.’ – Matt Brown\, Londonist \n\n\n\nThe stories of Arthur Machen (1863-1947) teem with sinister ancient pre-Christian horrors – troglodyte races and malevolent fauns – that lurk just beneath the surface of modern life. Yet for Machen\, these folklore evils were the flip side of a positive theology that invited the visionary to step through the veil of illusion into another world; a magical world. Sometimes the veil is lifted on ancient tumuli in the Welsh countryside of his childhood; often\, it can be found in a back street in London. \n\n\n\nThe Thin Veil of London takes up this theme. Much more than an ordinary tour\, it is a journey into the silent corners of Holborn and Bloomsbury. It is a journey into the worlds of Faery and science\, madness and ecstasy\, and what Machen called ‘the eternal beauty hidden beneath the crust of common and commonplace things; hidden and yet burning and glowing continually if you care to look with purged eyes’. \n\n\n\nThe walk begins in The Queen’s Larder pub in Bloomsbury and ends at another in the same area. See the Minimum Labyrinth website for more details.

DESCRIPTION:A guided walk larded with street theatre\, songs and pub stops\, exploring the rich history of one of London’s most colourful quarters. \nDrury Lane is a guided walking tour from Minimum Labyrinth. \nRobert Kingham (presenter of Pagan London) explores the rich cultural history of one of London’s most colourful\, creative and dangerous quarters. SUMMARY:Gypsy\, Roma\, Traveller Heritage in Wandsworth: Guided Walk and Plaque Unveiling
DESCRIPTION:This walk will take place in the Wandle Valley area between Earlsfield andWandsworth\, a stretch of SW London where nomadic people came to settle in the late 19th century. They evolved into a substantial community of costermongers in Wardley Street\, Garratt Lane\, men and women who sold flowers or traded from horse-pulled carts were documented in an illustrated magazine and recorded by the\nBBC in 1948. Wardley Street is a ‘spiritual home’ for people of Traveller heritage\, woven into the family history of so many people\, not just in Wandsworth or London\, but all over the world. \nThe Walk will conclude with a unique blue plaque unveiling ceremony in Wardley Street starting at 2pm and the launch of a full ‘People of Wardley Street’ research project. \nAs part of London Unseen this walk is free to the public thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Celebrating Romany\, Gypsy and Traveller Heritage
DESCRIPTION:This Guided Walk is the perfect warm-up to ‘The People of Wardley Street’ project\, unveiling a plaque to celebrate Romany Gypsy and Traveller heritage in Wandsworth a few weeks later. \nIt explores locations relevant to this history in the neighbouring Battersea area\, next door to Clapham Junction. Amongst a tangle of railway lines\, we will see how Victorian industrialisation attracted nomadic people to the edges of the city and visit the locations of some of the yards where they settled in the last decades of the 19th century. The Walk also takes in two remarkable housing estates\, Latchmere and Shaftesbury and features many of the extraordinary personalities who made there mark in this fascinating area; Charlotte Despard\, John Burns and Shapurji Saklatvala. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of London Unseen and will be free to attend thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:Self-Guided Augmented Reality Chinatown Walk
DESCRIPTION:Augmented Chinatown 2.0 is an app from the UK’s leading platform for British Chinese artists\, Chinese Arts Now (CAN)\, producers and creators of art telling Chinese stories in contemporary and innovative ways. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLondon’s Chinatown\, and the area it sits in\, has been the stage for a multitude of stories over its constantly evolving history. Augmented Chinatown 2.0 brings some of those stories to life in an immersive augmented reality experience which mixes striking visuals\, miniature audio dramas\, atmospheric music and a guided tour through the area’s past and present and how it became the centre of the Chinese community in London. \nUsers start the tour in Newport Place and walk the streets guided by writer and narrator\, Joel Tan. Over the course of an hour\, Tan’s narration looks at Chinatown’s history\, architecture and culture\, as well as ideas about belonging\, identity and migration. He evokes the sensory impact of the streets\, the ornate decorations\, the tempting smells and tastes\, and distinctive sounds. He takes us to the four gates\, only the last of which was created by Chinese artists\, and tells how the iconic pagoda was demolished in 2015 without consultation. \nThe app is available on Google Play and the App Store. \nThis event is part of London Unseen and will be free to attend thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:The Fight For Women’s Rights in Summerstown: Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:‘The Corruganza Boxmakers’ were a group of 44 courageous young women\, largely uneducated who in the face of a savage pay cut went on strike at a cardboard box factory in south west London in 1908. \nThey were supported and encouraged by trade union pioneer Mary Macarthur. Their action paved the way for much higher profile events like the Cradley Heath Chainmakers and the Bermondsey Uprising\, all in the frontline of the struggle for women’s rights in the workplace. Its an inspirational story that deserves a wider audience and for that reason we will be acknowledging it next year with the placing of a blue plaque. \nThe Walk which covers the site of the box factory in a fascinating part of Earlsfield between Wimbledon Stadium and the River Wandle takes in key locations relating to industries which employed women and passes some of the homes where they lived. \nThis walk is provided free to the public as part of London Unseen\, thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Tooting’s Migrant Heritage
DESCRIPTION:The Tooting-Wandsworth area of south-west London is rich in history and the contribution of migrants dates back centuries to the arrival of French Huguenots. As its expanding population saw it turn from a village to a suburb\, a wave of Jewish tailoring businesses saw Tooting High Street flourish. Over the last seventy years the arrival of a migrant population helped rebuild a shattered post-war country\, whether\nthrough constructing homes\, staffing London Transport and the newly-formed NHS or introducing their music and cuisine. \nThis walk is provided free to the public as part of London Unseen\, thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:Black Abolitionist Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Black freedom fighters travelled to the British Isles during the c19th to educate audiences about the brutalities of slavery\, to write and publish their narratives\, raise money to legally purchase themselves or family members\, or to settle and work here. \nIn their radical and politicised journeys of freedom\, they travelled thousands of miles to give lectures in large cities like London and Edinburgh\, to small villages like Bakewell\, Keswick and Pembroke. Whilst some of the buildings visited by these individuals do not remain\, it is impossible to deny that we walk past important Black history sites on a daily basis\, without realising the impact these men and women had on British society. \nIn this in-person tour\, Dr. Hannah-Rose Murray will take you to several sites related to Black activism and share stories of powerful oratory\, literary work\, and the relentless campaigns against slavery made by both Black women and men. \nAs part of London Unseen\, this tour is free to the public thanks for funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm

SUMMARY:Clapham's Hidden Links to Sierra Leone: Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:A Heritage Trail Exploring Clapham’s hidden links to Sierra Leone\, its ‘Province of Freedom’ and Freetown. \nThis walk through Clapham Common\, facilitated by historian Steve Martin and historical researcher Iyamide Thomas will provide the often untold story of how Britain\, through involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its abolition is uniquely linked to Sierra Leone and its ‘Krio’ people. The Krio are mainly the descendants of previously enslaved African\, African-American and Caribbean people. \nIyamide and Steve will explore the founding of a ‘Province of Freedom’ and ‘Free Town’ by abolitionists Granville Sharp and others known as the ‘Clapham Sect’ – mainly prominent\, wealthy evangelical Anglicans who worshipped at Holy Trinity Church on Clapham Common at the end of the 18th Century. William Wilberforce and Henry Thornton\, two of the group’s most influential leaders\, resided in Clapham and many of the meetings were held in their houses. In 1799 the Sect founded the African Academy\, a school to educate mainly boys from Africa\, a few of whom are buried in Clapham. \nAll the above and much more fascinating history awaits you on this interesting heritage trail! \nAs part of London Unseen\, this walk is free to the public thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:Tour of SOAS Library Exhibition: Narratives of Refugee Memories
DESCRIPTION:Including materials from British Ugandan Asians at 50\, SOAS’s Wolfson Gallery\, located inside the SOAS library is currently hosting an exhibition on ‘Narratives of Refugee Memories’ curated by Dr Sanjukta Ghosh (SOAS South Asia Institute). \n‘Unlocking SOAS Collections’\, the exhibits provide the creative lens to look again at the archives of Partition in 1947 and the post-Partition settlement history of displaced people of South Asia and beyond. Partition transcripts from India: A People Partitioned by the former BBC journalist and historian Andrew L. Whitehead\, papers of NGOs and campaigns such as War on Want\, news reports\, correspondences from local organisations and audio-visual materials held in SOAS Library are displayed. \nThe effects of Partition in this polyphonic narrative are\, however\, far-reaching and follow uncharted routes as family connections appear scattered. South Asia\, in this sense\, is not just restricted by its territories\, as the post-colonial diasporic subject shares a common history of the colonial past. The exhibition is enriched with original prints of diasporic artists such as Amarjeet Nandhra’s Displacement and Kamal Koria’s selection from the Journey series and Calamity. \nThe British Ugandan Asian exodus at 50 years ties with those who have the experience of dual migration and lineages from South Asia\, Africa to the UK. Focusing on photojournalism that ignited social and political campaigns worldwide\, a section is devoted to the photographs of the late Mohamed Amin — frontline cameraman extraordinaire (The Mohamed Amin Foundation\, Kenya). Collections from the British Ugandan Asians at 50 project (The India Overseas Trust)\, newspaper prints from Muktokotha archive at Moulvibazar (Bangladesh)\, sit alongside other personal collections — memorable ‘everyday’ artefacts that people carry as ‘belonging’ while leaving their old lives behind \nNazes Afroz\, the former Executive Editor for the South and Central Asia region of the BBC World Service has curated the West Wall exhibition Uncertain Landscape: refugee memories of Kolkata which features contrasting photographs of the past and transformations in the lives of individuals and families.\nTo book for the tour and talk of this exhibition please use the link below and select the 19th August. The time for this tour is set at 5.30pm.

Collections from the British Ugandan Asians at 50 project (The India Overseas Trust)\, newspaper prints from Muktokotha archive at Moulvibazar (Bangladesh)\, sit alongside other personal collections — memorable ‘everyday’ artefacts that people carry as ‘belonging’ while leaving their old lives behind \nNazes Afroz\, the former Executive Editor for the South and Central Asia region of the BBC World Service has curated the West Wall exhibition Uncertain Landscape: refugee memories of Kolkata which features contrasting photographs of the past and transformations in the lives of individuals and families. \nTo book for the tour and talk of this exhibition please use the link below and select 17 August. The time for this tour is set at 5.30pm.
