SUMMARY:Life Drawing Creative Social - Automatism of Ithell Colquhoun (from £5)
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the first major exhibition of visionary artist Ithell Colquhoun that is currently on show at Tate Modern\, this is part 1 of our Ithell Colquhoun inspired series – and the theme is ‘Automatic Drawing and the Psychic Trace’. \n  \nAs a surrealist\, Colquhoun used automatism to bypass the conscious mind. Some prompts of purely automatic drawing techniques—eyes closed\, non-dominant hand\, continuous line and beyond —will be prepared to get everyone out of their logical brain to explore this creative process together. \n  \nThe goal isn’t an accurate drawing but a raw\, honest response to the moment\, capturing primal energy and subconscious impressions. The overarching focus would be The Magical Body: Drawing the Unseen; let’s approach the model not just as a physical form\, but as a vessel of psychic\, natural\, and magical energy. Let’s draw what is felt and intuited\, not just what is seen. \n  \nI hope you will be “freed” from your current drawing styles and success formula after this session\, just like how I felt after visiting the exhibition. \n  \nImage Credit: Ithell Colquhoun\, Gorgon (1946). SUMMARY:An Evening with Mr Fish

SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. Advertised end times may be subject to change.\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack History Month 2023 #SalutingOurSisters

Our phones alert us to groundbreaking news events daily as we open Instagram to consume others’ lives and are sold the world of excess. \n\n\n\nWe eagerly divulge into celebrity gossip\, following the conspiracies of every supermodel-turned-influencer. We have been born into the spectacle and have watched its demise. \n\n\n\nWe are no longer shocked\, bemused\, or excited. \n\n\n\nThe spectacle is dead. \n\n\n\nLong live the spectacle. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an exhibition featuring London-based artists and their response to the concept of the death of the Spectacle. \n\n\n\nThe opening night for the exhibition is Thursday\, 27 July\, from 18:00-21:00. SUMMARY:Against All Odds - Free Arts Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A solo art exhibition of bronze sculpture and graphite drawings by the award-winning international sculptor Teresa Wells MRSS. Teresa’s work is inspired by the question\, “How do Humans Behave?” \n\n\n\nShe takes inspiration from the ability of mankind to survive in the face of adversity (Against All Odds).  Her forms evoke unease and tension as she balances each piece on edge.  \n\n\n\nInfluenced by a moral upbringing\, she challenges a contemporary expectation of perfection to celebrate that our whole selves\, including flaws\, make us incredible.

SUMMARY:The Knight Divided with Richard Stone
DESCRIPTION:Fluid\, sculptural forms evoke the wild\, tumultuous movement of the sea or else\, the uncanny stillness of a dense forest\, both creating veil-like surfaces which alternately obscure and reveal the figures caught between. These latest works by Richard Stone reflect on the artist’s spontaneous sculptural process in relation to the physical materiality of clay\, marble and bronze to explore wider perceived dichotomies between artistic conceit and authenticity\, strength and vulnerability\, resistance and surrender. Through deconstructed figures and sensual\, curvaceous shapes\, the knight divided\, the artist’s third solo exhibition with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, considers art’s ability to not just challenge convention but to also present bold\, new visions for the future. \nFor Stone\, the creative process begins and ends with the material. He works with his hands\, allowing his thoughts and feelings to organically filter through his gestures until a shape or form begins to emerge. The works possess a compelling sense of rawness and intimacy that unsettles the historic monumentality of sculpture and invites the viewer to form a more embodied\, emotional connection to the work. The title of this latest exhibition refers to this process by personifying the notion of conflict. The knight – conventionally a masculine\, heroic figure – is deconstructed in Stone’s work\, appearing in brief glimpses of limbs that are then engulfed by swathes of coloured clay or marble. Still\, we can also understand the tumultuous scenes as visual representations of psychological states or rather\, transformation. \nThe show begins with the statue in the sea\, depicting a figure and horse descending or ascending from the depths. The piece is a continuation of Stone’s recent works in which he wrapped abstracted fabric rendered from clay around the body of found horse statues to subvert ideas of power and masculinity. Still\, here\, both figure and animal have been absorbed back into the material. Whether or not this is perceived as a process of destruction or renewal is left for the viewer to decide. At the same time\, however\, it’s hard not to view the work through the lens of ongoing contemporary debates around the value or purpose of public art. ‘It seems to have become a very binary discussion\, but what’s exciting is that we are now in a transitional space where we can actually talk about what we might want rather than what we do not like\,’ says Stone\, but inevitably\, it is also a space of uncertainty\, especially for a male sculptor. Stone plays with this idea by moving away from the elevated structure of a plinth to present\, instead\, a series of deeply framed tableaux\, which invite the viewer to perceive the work as image or painting as well as an object. The fluid and richly coloured forms appear to warp and dissipate before the eye\, disrupting our ability to ascertain\, and more crucially\, label what we see. \nThe piece entitled the bather\, after Duncan Grant’s 1911 painting Bathing\, plays further with our sense of perception as amorphous watery shapes\, create an impression of an undulating motion. As the surface seems to shift\, the viewer experiences an almost dizzying sensation that both confounds and liberates the gaze. Not all of the works are as abstract\, however. A smaller-scale piece entitled lo! lonely horse\, for example\, comprises a tiny porcelain horse – a found object – set adrift in ceramic waves. ‘I made this work deliberately small to negate the idea of monument and especially the traditional\, inflated masculine monument of the plinth and heroic ideal\, represented by increasingly questionable heroes\,’ comments Stone. ‘The biblical horses of the apocalypse\, traditionally associated with dominant masculinity\, are reduced to one\, the lone horse lost in a sea of unknowing.’ \nSimilarly\, where the knight appears in the works\, it is as a solitary figure\, lost between waves or amongst the intertwined branches of trees. For Stone\, like the ocean\, the forest represents a transitional space rather than a specific geographical location or environment. The trees are abstracted to thick\, muscular forms\, creating a stunning impression of density that contrasts the softer\, curvaceousness of the waves in the water-based works. Stone notes that he ‘wanted to draw on the idea of masculine and feminine energies but without setting them up as oppositional.’ Indeed\, although the works convey distinct atmospheres\, there is a strong visual relationship between the forms that create an impression of wholeness. This is perhaps most clearly expressed in a new bronze work entitled the ancient principle\, which reimagines the traditional sculptural figure of mother and child in the more ambiguous form of a trinity of birds. Once again\, the knight appears in glimpses as a softer\, more fluid presence that has an almost omniscient quality as ‘a universal protector rather than a symbol of archaic masculinity.’ \nIn the exhibition’s closing piece\, Icarus and the sea\, Stone draws on the Greek myth that Icarus flies too close to the sun\, paying no heed to his father’s warnings. As a result\, the wax of his makeshift wings melts\, and he plummets to his death. However\, in Stone’s sculptural retelling\, Icarus\, rather than drowning in the waves\, is reclaimed by the sea (traditionally a female energy)\, relating to the notion of wholeness and circularity while also turning the original narrative on its head by offering an alternative\, more uplifting perspective. \nAmidst the continued tumult and uncertainty of contemporary existence\, the knight divided invites us to seek solace in the creative potential of transitional periods – as a time of renewal and transformation.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:The Kraken ‘Espreso Artini’ Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The master of the dark arts (and darker rum)\, The Kraken\, is celebrating the launch of its first flavoured rum\, The Kraken Roast Coffee\, with the creation of the UK’s first-ever pop-up gallery that invites guests to drink the artworks on the show! \nOpening in London’s Greek Street\, Soho on 28th May with daytime viewing open to all (Midday – 6 pm) and ticketed opening party (7 pm-11 pm); the pop-up gallery will showcase bespoke Kraken artworks created in collaboration with the world-renowned comic artist Brian Williamson. Strictly limited to 100 hands numbered and signed ‘drinkable prints’\, the detailed illustrations will be brought to life on Espresso Rumtini cocktails\, thus transforming them into ‘Espresso Artinis’\, as well as being hung as more traditional forms of artwork in the gallery itself.\nUpon arrival\, guests will be given a gold coin which they can exchange for an Espresso Artini with an illustration of their choice atop the piece of printed edible art. Those who want to try out drawing their cocktail artworks will also have the chance to book in for a masterclass during the daytime with renowned coffee artist Ben Lewis in a designated ‘art room’ at the London gallery\, with each daring artist rewarded with a delicious drink at the end of their endeavours. \nSubverting the norms of a usual exhibition\, The Kraken’s Espresso Artini pop-up will [of course] play host to a full Kraken bar\, stocked with a range of cocktails created with The Kraken Roast Coffee and its signature cocktail – The Perfect Storm\, crafted with The Kraken Black Spiced Rum\, ginger beer and lime. The Kraken Roast Coffee (70cl\, 40% ABV) is a rich fusion of Spiced Caribbean Rum and fine Arabica Bean coffee. As a result\, it tastes as devilishly intense as one might suspect – craftily balancing the rich\, dark\, smooth taste of coffee with the original Kraken Black Spiced Rum spices. \nThe story goes that in an attempt to ward off an imminent Kraken attack\, those who occupy the shores of the High Seas and beyond have persisted with ancient and unavailing methods of hindering The Beast\, one being to harness the dark aroma of roast coffee in a futile attempt to deter him. As you’d expect\, even the most menacingly potent of Arabica Beans cannot stop one as mighty as The Kraken\, but at least it has resulted in this new and rich dark rum. One which is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.\nThe Kraken Espresso Artini Exhibition will be popping up at 59 Greek Street in London on 28th May. A limited number of tickets are available\, which can be booked here: https://the-kraken-artini.myshopify.com/. Each ticket costs £5 per person and will include entry\, an Espresso Artini and a taste of The Kraken Roast Coffee in two other cocktail forms.\nThe pop-up will then travel to Head of Steam in Birmingham on 8th June and Call Lane Social in Leeds on 9th June. Entry is free\, and guests can exchange a gold coin given upon arrival for an Espresso Artini featuring apiece of printed edible art on top. \nFor those unable to attend one of the pop-ups\, rum fans can also enter a competition to be in with the chance of winning a bespoke Kraken Roast Coffee Espresso Artini kit that includes everything one needs to re-create cocktail artworks at home. A few kits are available to win via The Beast’s online portal\, The League of Darkness; Brits can enter to win via this link. If chosen\, the equipment will be delivered to their home nationwide in June: https://www.theleagueofdarkness.co.uk/competitions/45.

SUMMARY:Anna Hulačová and Pavla Malinová: Alien Pollinators - Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Anna Hulačová & Pavla Malinova’s exhibition Alien Pollinators at No 9 Cork Street\, a hub for leading international galleries launched by Frieze in October 2021\, introduces the figurative work of two young Czech artists\, Anna Hulačová and Pavla Malinová\, finalists of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award. Sculptures by Hulačová\, who mixes themes\, concepts and materials to create works with “a deep social commentary\,” are exhibited alongside figurative paintings by Pavla Malinová\, who employs current and archetypal symbolism in her career\, to create a dialogue between sculpture and paintings. \n \nHulačová and Malinová’s methods are similarly characterized by schematizations formally inspired by classical\, medieval\, and folk prototypes. In their recent work\, one can see a shared reproduction or mirror of figures and natural organisms that come together to form one fused\, hybrid whole. In a dialogue between sculpture and painting\, predominant motifs arise\, evolving from the interconnection of figures with natural or organic matter. From muted paintings to black and white monochrome drawings of Malinová\, through delicately coloured accents of HulHulačová’sncrete sculptures\, the composition of exhibited works gradually reveal their similarities and mirror or complement each other without losing their uniqueness. In a way\, we can understand the exhibition of the results of these two young artists in London at Cork Street as a symbolic expression of the principle of coexistence\, which is not only the motif of the works themselves but is also reflected in an overall gesture of cooperation and sharing. \n \n  \nThe exhibition is presented by hunt Kastner gallery.\nPartners: Czech Centre London\, litost gallery\, Czech Ministry of Culture\, Prague City Magistrate \nPreview: March 10th\, 6-8 pm\, in cooperation with Berg Contemporary\, Reykjavik and Friends Indeed\, San Francisco\nOpening Times: Monday – Saturday\, 10am – 6pm.

SUMMARY:Míla Fürstová: All the Rivers That Flow Through Me - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:A mid-career retrospective of the Czech-born artist Míla Fürstová best known in the UK for creating artwork for Coldplay’s best-selling album Ghost Stories.\n\n\n\nMíla’s works are an intimate portrayal of the human soul explored through the medium of etching\, expressed in a distinctly female voice. The content of her work is inspired by universal and personal mythologies\, poetic and often narrative. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMíla’s mid-career retrospective at the Czech Centre’s Vitrínka Gallery charts the course from Míla’s graduation from the Royal College of Art\, to her becoming the youngest ever elected Academician at the Royal West of Academy in Bristol\, being collected by the V&A and Her Majesty the Queen\, to her commission by Coldplay and finally the creation of “All the Rivers That Flow Through Me”\, selected from ten thousand artworks to represent the Summer Exhibition online by the Royal Academy of Arts.Private view: Thursday 17 March 2022\, 6 – 9 pm \n\n\n\nABOUT MÍLA FÜRSTOVÁMíla Fürstová is an award-winning internationally exhibited artist who has shown in 20 solo shows in many countries\, including Britain\, the USA\, France and the Czech Republic over the last decade. During this time\, she has won 14 prestigious awards. Her work has become part of critical private and public collections\, including Queen Elizabeth II and the V&A Museum in London and has featured in numerous publications.Born in Czechoslovakia\, Míla gained an MA degree in Art\, English Language and Psychology at Charles University in Prague\, whilst simultaneously studying for her BA degree in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Gloucestershire. In 2001\, Míla Fürstová received her Master’s degree at the Royal College of Art and had subsequently lectured at Coventry University and The University of Gloucestershire. In 2003\, Míla was appointed the first Artist in Residence at the Cheltenham Ladies College\, where she founded and ran an Etching studio till 2010.In 2009\, Míla Fürstová became the youngest ever elected Academician at the Royal West of Academy in Bristol. In 2014\, Míla’s work reached over 400 million people when she was commissioned to make the artwork for the Coldplay Ghost Stories album and four singles. In 2015\, the sale of Míla’s Coldplay artwork raised over £100 000 in aid children’s charities. \n\n\n\nFree event but registration required: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/mila-furstova-all-the-rivers-that-flow-through-me-private-view-tickets-270894220907 \n\n\n\nNew Gold Coldplay Etching Demonstration:12 May 2022\, 6.30pmFollowed by a film screening at 7 pm \n\n\n\nExhibition opening hours:18 March – 10 June 2022Tuesday – Friday10 am – 5 pm or other times by appointment at info@czechcentre.org.uk \n\n\n\nA new golden version of the two wings in the shape of a broken heart\, Míla’s art for Coldplay’s worldwide number one album Ghost Stories\, will be presented at a charity event at the Czech Centre in May as well as a digital screen featuring the forty-minute animation that Coldplay made of Míla’s art. Also included in the exhibition are works from Míla’s graduation at the Royal College of Art\, work also in the collection of the V&A\, Her Majesty the Queen\, the Czech Republic’s first democratic President\, Václav Havel and selected results from Míla’s commissions by Coldplay and for the British covers of the New York Times Best Selling series Mortal Instruments. In the Czech Centre window\, looking out onto Notting Hill’s busiest road by Kensington Palace Gardens will be Míla’s “All the Rivers That Flow Through Me”\, a six-panel etching which Grayson Perry handpicked for central display at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition\, and then selected as the one image from over ten thousand entries\, to represent the show online. \n\n\n\nAnother relevant series to be exhibited in Míla’s Czech Centre retrospective is “Motherhood”\, a series which playfully deals with the joys and difficulties of being a parent as well as a professional artist. In one of these series\, the artist depicts herself contorted into a yoga pose to protect and cradle her son whilst following her calling. Míla produced this series after the birth of her second child\, Viola\, who was delivered just hours after Míla made the finishing touches to Coldplay’s final single\, “True Love”\, a work which also will be on display and a term that sums up her dedication to her craft. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is organised by the Czech Centre and Míla’s long time art dealer\, Fraser Scott of A Gallery.

SUMMARY:We Gather – Craft Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Gather – Craft Exhibition featuring five female makers of Black and Asian Heritage\nNew Crafts Council exhibition We Gather features five female makers of Black and Asian heritage whose work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value\, 17 November 2021 – 5 February 2022 \nWe Gather exhibition opens at the Crafts Council Gallery on 17 November and features five female Black and Asian heritage artists. Whilst their chosen materials and disciplines vary\, their work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value. The makers are Shaheen Ahmed\, Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings\, Francisca Onumah and Onome Otite. \nThe title We Gather refers to the gathering of ideas\, skills and emotions embedded within these five craft practices and the meeting of perspectives that have been underrepresented in the industry. It is also a symbol of gratitude towards the communities who gathered their courage\, bodies\, and voices to support justice for Black lives\, which instigated deeper conversations between the UK’s Black makers and the Crafts Council. \n“This exhibition has offered us a unique opportunity to curate in honour of women who share similar experiences and frames of reference to our own\, but also within a mainstream cultural organisation that we haven’t traditionally seen ourselves reflected in. We are excited to bring together their collection of works\, which offer audiences fresh visibility to crafts that has emotional depth\, space and social resonance.” Curators of We Gather\, Rosie Ross & Griffi. \nThe We Gather exhibition came out of Craft Expertise\, the AHRC-funded UKRI/RCUK Innovation Fellowship led by Dr Karen Patel of Birmingham City University\, collaborating with Crafts Council. The research aimed to raise awareness of inequalities in the current craft economy in the UK and highlight the various challenges women of colour face in the sector. \nCommissioned by Dr Karen Patel as part of her research\, each artist in the exhibition will present new and existing work. \nBirmingham-based artist Shaheen Ahmed uses maps to reflect narratives of statelessness and disparagement. Her work is layered with a multitude of craft processes and motifs\, including calligraphy and Islamic geometry. She wore a blindfold while making them connect with the emotions and experiences of oppressed societies. \nEast Sussex-based artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, known for her provocative textile works that challenge preconceptions of knitting and crochet\, has created a knitted magazine cover – ‘We Mek Magazine’- full of symbolism with a central figure inspired by political activist Angela Davis and with her watch set to 9.25\, the time that George Floyd lost his life to police brutality. \nBritish-Sudanese textile artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings will present a new light installation. The work incorporates dyeing\, screen-printing\, and Devoré techniques to explore themes of identity\, communication\, heritage\, and womanhood. The artist is influenced by her Sudanese heritage\, which is reflected in her use of Arabic geometry\, colour\, and form. \nGhanaian-born silversmith Francisca Onumah has created three emotive and figurative vessels in her new work ‘In our sKin’ (2021) that reflect family\, relationships and historical images of Ghanaian people in everyday life. Their abstracted patterns are deconstructed from traditional Ghanaian motifs\, fabrics\, and crafted objects. Instead\, marks and textures are repeatedly hammered into sheet metal to mirror and resemble the patterns found in textiles and fabrics. \nLondon-based artist Onome Otite has created a new textile work inspired by the support network between women\, the group of figures in her piece are based on close friends of hers that have inspired her. She has also intentionally chosen five figures to mirror the relevance of the five women taking part in the We Gather exhibition. She has hand-stitched loose-folded fabrics across her hand-drawn statistics\, which each of her subjects has donated. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a gathering space. Material from the commissioning artists will be displayed alongside other pioneering female makers whose work celebrates craft within everyday contexts. Among these will be works by artists Jasleen Kaur and Magdalene Odundo DBE from the Crafts Council Collection. We Gather is a site for learning and reflection\, with books\, reports and images encouraging visitors to discuss visibility\, cultural traditions\, and the value of women’s contribution to craft within everyday contexts. \nThe exhibition also features a selection of objects and portraits of female artisans from The Black Artisans\, a photographic project by Jo Sealy that celebrates Black artisans in traditional sectors of UK heritage crafts and gives visibility to doing practices derived from African and Caribbean cultural heritage\, including steel pan making and calabash art. \nThe exhibition graphic design is by Rose Nordin\, co-founder of OOMK (One of My Kind).

SUMMARY:MAPA Fine Art presents: ‘Still @live’ Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:MAPA Fine Art is a Nomadic art gallery with our next exhibition (Still @live) opening in London.\nAbout this event\nMAPA FINE ART IS PLEASED TO PRESENT STILL @LIVE\, A GROUP EXHIBITION FEATURING SIX EMERGING INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS WORKING WITHIN THE MEDIUM OF FIGURATIVE PAINTING. THEIR WORK SPEAKS TO THE HUMAN CONDITION IN THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES\, BUT ALSO COMMENTS ON OUR PRIVATE (AND TIMELESS) DESIRES\, SECRETS AND ANXIETIES. DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS\, THE EXHIBITION MIRRORS THE PRESENT STATE OF THE WORLD BY TAKING PLACE ONLINE AT FIRST\, CONNECTING US THROUGH TECHNOLOGY\, AND EMERGING IN A PHYSICAL SPACE IN LONDON IN THE SPRING OF 2021. \nThe year 2021 might seem like the promise of a new beginning\, but will the mere addition of a number make our lives any better? The emotions we experienced last year and our collective yearning for change throughout the pandemic have become integral parts of who we are. It seems that what has emerged from multiple lockdowns and widespread isolation\, is a globally shared experience of solitude. \nThis unexpected commonality\, a collective cluster of emotions\, is resonating even in the virtual space. Though physically separated\, we are still here\, and art remains one of the fundamental ways we can investigate our inner states and relate to each other. The expressive language of the works in this exhibition can serve as a guide on an introspective journey\, to a higher sense of unity which can be fully experienced once we can finally meet again in physical places. \nCurators: Jindra Bucan & Marc Prats

SUMMARY:"The Desperate Journey II"\, Tewodros Hagos
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery is pleased to present the solo show ‘The Desperate Journey II’ by Tewodros Hagos. \nExhausted faces\, framed by bright orange life jackets\, gaze out at the viewer\, their eyes filled with emotion. At the same time\, other figures are huddled together in groups\, their bodies wrapped in shimmering golden blankets as they watch distant boats on stormy seas. These poignant paintings are a continuation of Ethiopian artist Tewodros Hagos’series The Desperate Journey\, aiming to raise awareness of the global migrant crisis and address the dehumanising effect of journalistic imagery and footage. For his solo exhibition entitled The Desperate Journey II at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London Bridge\, Hagos presents exquisite new works that elevate the tragedy of the situation and the emotional experience of each of his subjects. \nThe series initially began to respond to the artist’s increasing realisation of the ineffectiveness of news stories and imagery to convey lived experience or complex truths. While many media feed images may provoke an immediate emotional response\, they are often deliberately sensationalised to shock the viewer. Over time\, the bombardment of such imagery risks normalisation of what ‘remains one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time.’ ‘People don’t realise that the migrant crisis is ongoing. The media focus switches from one direction to another. Currently\, it’s on coronavirus\, while here in Ethiopia and Africa more generally\, millions of people continue to be displaced as a result of conflict\,’ says Hagos. Through the classical\, static medium of painting\, the artist invites a slower\, deeper kind of contemplation that counters the fast-paced consumption of digital media. \nSignificantly\, the works\, especially the close-up portraits\, convey a sense of strength and tragedy\, loss and grief. The painting entitled Journey (40)\, for example\, depicts a young boy staring directly at the viewer. Instead of pleading\, his expression is solemn and dignified. In many works\, Hagos also transforms the foil blanket\, which is traditionally used in emergencies to keep people warm\, into a thing of beauty. It is gold and silver surface is luminous in the darkness. \nAt the same time\, the stark contrast of light and dark creates an unsettling atmosphere and almost surreal effect. This is perhaps most notable in the work entitled Journey (42)\, in which a man appears enrobed in a golden blanket\, his presence huge and looming against the inky blue background of the sky and ocean. The composition recalls traditional portrait paintings and the portrayal of grandeur. Still\, instead of a lavish\, homely domestic setting\, the vast\, empty sky conveys an aching sense of isolation and loneliness mirrored in the man’s expression and watery\, red eyes. In this way\, Hagos creates a more complex\, layered narrative that demands a deeper level of engagement while questioning which individuals and events are traditionally recorded by history. \nAmongst the most devastating paintings take a wider perspective\, focusing on the perilous sea journey that hundreds of migrants make every day in search of better living conditions. In one work\, a dangerously overcrowded boat floats towards the front of the canvas\, while in the background\, a second boat is enveloped in flames\, smoke billowing into the sky in huge plumes. Another painting depicts life jackets floating emptily on the waves\, once again underlining the potentially fatal risk that such a journey presents. As with all of the works in the series\, the paintings possess a haunting sense of stillness that reflects the historical impact of the crisis and appeals to our shared sense of humanity.

SUMMARY:Turner and the Thames
DESCRIPTION:Sir David Attenborough opened this exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s original work in January this year\, which attracted widespread publicity and resulted in the exhibition selling out until the end of April\, its original end date. But\, thanks to Tate generously extending its loan\, the exhibition of five oil sketches of the Thames can now be seen until October 31st. \nRigorous precautions have been taken to protect staff and visitors\, including limiting the number of visitors in the house to just eight at any one time which provides an enhanced\, more intimate experience. \n“Turner’s House Trust are incredibly grateful to our volunteers for working these extra hours and to the Tate for this extension of their loan\, the first Turner works to be shown in his house since 1826.” Says Ricky Pound\, House Director\, “We’ve had great feedback since reopening\, as limiting numbers has meant more space in the house for visitors to explore and this has been welcomed with enthusiasm!”\nDue to the current Covid-19 situation\, advance booking is essential. Visitors will receive a short introduction to the house in the garden and then enjoy a self-guided visit from Wednesday-Saturday: 12pm-1pm-2pm-3pm (last entrance). Exclusive guided tours for small family groups and close friends can also be arranged. Please contact housedirector@turnershouse.org for further details.
