SUMMARY:Halloween with Distorted Frame: Pulse (2001) + intro by film critic Jasper Sharp
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday 29 October for our Halloween screening of Pulse (2001) at The Castle Cinema in Hackney. In Cure director Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s modern horror classic\, spectres infest an analog world that’s rapidly giving way to a digital one. An apocalyptic\, tech-sceptic ghost story on growing disconnection and isolation in the internet age\, Pulse is routinely ranked amongst the scariest horror movies ever made and features a centrepiece scene of such uncanny terror it has been described by The AV Club’s Scott Tobias as “the signature sequence in all of J-horror”.\n\nPresented in collaboration with SciFrights Podcast\, the film will be introduced by Jasper Sharp\, a critic\, author\, filmmaker and independent scholar specialising in Japanese cinema

The set comes complete with a slew of special features\, including new director’s commentary\, a never-before-seen short film by Paul Hills\, a film poster\, postcards and more. Please see the full list below. The film will also be available on digital from 27 October and standard DVD and Blu-ray on 17 November. \nIn the ‘80s\, Phil’s father upped and moved the family from an inner-city slum to Stevenage\, in the hope of a brighter future. Now it’s the early ‘90s and that dream has crumbled. Phil (Simm) and his friends have left school and find themselves falling into a bewildering world of unemployment\, violence and drug abuse. \nThen\, Ted (Andrew Lincoln) disappears\, Steve (Richard Hanson) is trying to live up to his parents’ expectations with a proper job and loved-up Matt (Nathan Valente) gets engaged\, leaving Phil out on a limb. \nAlienated from his friends and unhappy with his life\, Phil gets involved with Steve’s wrongun’ brother Robert (Marc Warren)\, a dangerously incompetent villain who is forever planning his one ‘big job’ that’ll change his fortunes. \nNow he’s trapped between two worlds – the criminal and the banal. When his cousin Shona (Emer McCourt) turns up\, it gives Phil the kick up the butt he needs. It’s time to make big changes\, but on the horizon\, there are momentous decisions to make… \nIt’s Boston Kickout or bust in this bangin’ British thriller that takes you back to the ‘90s for a rite of passage thrill ride.

SUMMARY:Violet Hour x Distorted Frame present Surveillance Seance: Paranormal Activity + short film
DESCRIPTION:Violet Hour x Distorted Frame present \nSurveillance Séance: Paranormal Activity + My House Walk-Through (short film) \nParanormal Activity \n2007\, 86 min \nParanormal Activity places the haunted house at the centre of an act of self-surveillance. When Katie reveals to her boyfriend Micah that she has been haunted by an evil presence since childhood\, Micah employs an array of digital devices to try and record any strange events that might happen around their home. But when doors start slamming on their own\, a Ouija board spontaneously combusts and Katie appears to become possessed (caught in chilling time lapse)\, the couple may have got more than they bargained for. The capturing of these events gives the film a documentary feel\, but one wonders if the ghost is not just on screen but also in the machine. Oren Peli’s low budget chiller conducts a séance for the YouTube generation\, a conjuring of spirits in high definition\, offering proof that our collective fear of the unknown\, despite our technological progress\, is even more potent than ever. \nDirector: Oren Peli \nLanguage: English \n  \nThe film will be accompanied by: \nMy House Walk-Through \n2016\, 12 min \nDirected by visual artist and filmmaker PiroPito\, this atmospheric short film claims to be “not a horror video” but instead a simple visual tour of their own home. But what quickly emerges is an increasingly disturbing parade of grotesque images presented as a single\, unbroken take. As the camera tracks through an impossibly unending hallway\, this repetition of phantasmagorias builds to a haunting and ultimately tragic conclusion. A chilling example of “creepypasta” (scary stories presented online as real-life happenings)\, My House Walk-Through is an astonishing work of low-budget digital horror and a perfect companion piece to Paranormal Activity. \nDirector: PiroPito \nLanguage: Japanese (with English subtitles)

SUMMARY:Solas – A Feast of Community Film
DESCRIPTION:Portobello Film Festival is delighted to partner with the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith to celebrate 30 years of free films with a special screening of short films with links to the Irish community in West London. \nThe programme is dedicated to the memory of Niall McDevitt\, ICC Poet in Residence and Portobello Road resident. He collaborated with acclaimed Irish documentary filmmaker Sé Merry Doyle on works including W.B. Yeats: The Battle of Blythe Road about the HQ of The Golden Dawn\, and James Joyce – Reluctant Groom recounting Joyce’s marriage in Kensington. Both will be shown alongside the world premiere of William Blake and the River Tyburn. \nThe afternoon delves into the archives of the Portobello Film Festival\, with highlights including last year’s winner\, Jama The Dand\,y about Portobello legend Jama Elmi whose colourful outfits have earned him the moniker “London’s best-dressed man”; 2006 festival winner Rootical tells the story of photographer Charlie Phillips who documented the social implications of Caribbean immigration in Notting Hill in the 1950s and 1960s\, while Irish in Brent places the focus on Irish immigration in the 1980s. \nHousing activists\, including musicians Glan Hansard and Hozier\, join forces with filmmaker Jim Sheridan in Shelter Me\, a film about the homeless crisis in Dublin. Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Dougal from ‘Father Ted’) is confronted with an alien invasion in the 50s sci-fi spoof Flying Saucer Rock and Roll. Jake Auerbach’s documentary Lucian Freud: Portraits looks back at the painter’s life through conversations with his sitters. \nSelected for their links to the Irish and West London communities\, these are just some examples of the breadth of topics\, characters\, and styles of films entered and shown for free since 1996. The partnership with the Irish Cultural Centre forms part of the anniversary celebrations in the run-up to the 30th Portobello Film Festival from 28 August to 14 September 2025.

SUMMARY:Our Lovely Pig Slaughter + Q&A with Adam Martinec
DESCRIPTION:The 28th Made in Prague Festival presents the UK premiere of Adam Martinec’s ‘A Rowdily Tragicomic Ode to Family Feuds and Disappearing Traditions‘\, inspired by Miloš Forman’s films and Bohumil Hrabal’s poetics. The film received the Jury’s Special Mention at the 2024 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. \nThe women cry over onions in the kitchen\, united in exasperation with their men. The men\, led by recent widower Karel\, drink plum brandy outside\, preparing for a pig killing. This annual gathering is when the family reconnects to enjoy great food. However\, family tensions are high this year\, and things are not going as planned. Karel’s daughter Romana misses her mother\, her sister’s marriage is on the rocks\, and Grandpa doesn’t want to do more pig killings. At the same time\, the butcher hides the fact that the ammunition is damp and a nosy neighbour plans to report the illegal slaughter. Amidst the chaos\, six-year-old Dusik goes missing. Inspired by Miloš Forman’s film and Bohumil Hrabal’s poetics\, the director unveils the Czech temperament\, creating a poignant comedy full of slapstick moments\, searing humour and great empathy amidst gender and generational divides. With strong visuals\, an atmospheric soundtrack\, and a fantastic array of non-actors\, this remarkable debut blends tragic and comic undertones. \nAdam Martinec\, Czech Republic 2024\, 84´\, English subtitles\nCast: Karel Martinec\, Miloslav Čížek\, Pavlina Balner\, Aleš Bílík\, Karin Bilíková \nKarlovy Vary International Film Festival 2024\nA Special Award Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2024\nOur Lovely Pig Slaughter + Q&A with Adam Martinec / Czech Centre London (czechcentres.cz)

SUMMARY:Threads That Tie Us: An Oshwal Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:Threads That Tie Us: An Oshwal Odyssey is a documentary that traces the 2\,500 year long journey of the Halari Oshwals\, a small community from India who have since dispersed around the world. In this film\, driven by a deep connection to her roots\, Bindu Shah navigates the scattered diaspora throughout Canada\, India\, Kenya\, and the United Kingdom. Each emigrant of the community becomes a storyteller\, creating microcosms of Halari Oshwal life. Ideas of faith\, spirituality\, and business-centric lifestyles intersect in this global story. Yet\, against the backdrop of globalization\, the film delicately raises questions that resonate with universal themes of dying languages and cultural heritage. This documentary asks whether this community can persevere amid geographical distances and age-old rules. As an exploration of identity\, communal history\, and sacred pacts\, this documentary seeks to find out at what lengths this community can go to sustain their unity.

SUMMARY:DAISIES
DESCRIPTION:Věra Chytilová’s classic of surrealist cinema is the most adventurous and anarchic Czech movie of the 1960s. Two young women\, both named Marie\, revolt against a degenerate\, decayed and oppressive society\, attacking symbols of wealth and bourgeois culture. A riotous\, punk-poem of a film that is both hilarious and mind-warpingly innovative\, it has influenced generations of filmmakers. \n  \nScreening times: \nSunday 16 June 2024\, 7.30 pm\nThursday 20 June 2024\, 4 pm \nShown by The Garden Cinema as part of their Women Aren’t Funny season. In partnership with the Czech Centre. \nThe screening on Sunday 16 June\, will be introduced by filmmaker and lecturer Pavel Prokopic. \n  \nDefiant feminist statement? Nihilistic\, avant-garde comedy? Daisies remains a fascinating cinematic rollercoaster. Remarkable and refreshingly uncompromising\, it continues to provoke\, stimulate and entertain. \n  \nPavel Prokopic is a Czech filmmaker\, and lecturer at the University of Salford. His current work focuses on advancing cinema as a unique form of art and storytelling by combining creative experimentation\, philosophical concepts\, and cutting-edge technologies. His work has been widely published\, exhibited and presented\, including FACT in Liverpool and V&A museum in London. SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: The Great Nothing
DESCRIPTION:evA feature-length documentary tragicomedy delving into the Czech response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The result is an absurdly humorous portrayal of society\, tinged with serious undertones\, yet unexpectedly lighthearted\, leaving viewers questioning the surreal reality of it all. \nVít Klusák\, Marika Pecháčková\, Czech Republic 2023\, 103´\nThe Czech Lion nomination for the Best Czech Documentary \n“It’s not about Covid\, it’s about us\,”  – Viewer \nIn the spring of 2020\, Vít Klusák (known for “Caught in the Net” and “Czech Dream”) and Marika Pecháčková embarked on a journey through the deserted streets of Prague\, documenting the nation’s two-year struggle with the global crisis and government mandates. Through poignant human narratives\, poetic reflections on the times\, surreal imagery\, and pivotal societal moments\, the filmmakers ventured into hospitals alongside doctors\, captured the fervour of anti-vaxx protesters\, witnessed athletes adapting to home training\, and followed a mezzo-soprano forced to find employment in a supermarket. With striking black-and-white cinematography\, the film refrains from imposing judgment\, allowing the raw footage to speak for itself.\nScreened as part of the Czech Centre’s Czech Documentary Now series. \nAbout the directors and the producer\nVít Klusák is a well known Czech director who with Filip Remunda shot the prize-winning film Czech Dream about a fictional supermarket in 2003. Since than he has directed many movies including Caught in the Net (2020)\, White World according to Daliborek (2017) and One Second Forever (2021) \nMarika Pecháčková studied photography and journalism before she finally realised that documentary film was the place from which she wanted to watch and understand the world. Her fundamental structures of thinking come from psychology and her personal experience with psychotherapy. Filmography: Rest Now \nPavla Klimešová is a producer based in the Czech Republic who studied film production at FAMU. She produced Caught in the Net\, an award-winning documentary by the directing duo Vít Klusák & Barbora Chalupová about child abuse online and Barbora’s next film The Law of Love about same sex marriages in Czechia. She is now developing Marika Pecháčková’s debut Runaway.

SUMMARY:Kapr Code
DESCRIPTION:A documentary opera featuring the contradictory life of the ‘Czech John Cage‘\, progressive composer and prominent communist Jan Kapr (1914-88)\, a Stalin award laureate\, later banned in socialist Czechoslovakia. The film explores the nature of memory and narration\, using Kapr’s personal\, never-before-seen amateur films illustrating his humour\, inner struggles and desire to leave traces for eternity while Kapr’s music with libretto provided by Jiří Adámek illustrates the pivotal moments of his life as it moves inexorably towards his fate. Combining deep research into Kapr’s archive with a humorous libretto and playful editing this is an unusual celebration of creativity that shakes up our idea of biography. \n\n\n\nLucie Králová\, Czech Republic / Slovakia 2022\, 91′\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nWorld premiere Visions du Réel 2022The Best Czech Film at the 2022 Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival\, The Best Documentary Czech Film Critics‘  Awards 2022\n\n\n\n\nBOOK NOW\n\n\n\n\nPart of the 27th Made In Prague Festival (3rd November – 10th December 2023) organized by the Czech Centre London.
