SUMMARY:Restless // A one hour punk theatre gig
DESCRIPTION:‘Appropriately furious…a howl against abuse that somehow everyone can sing along to‘ – audience member \nAre you angry? This band is angry. Come as you are\, and bring anyone with you who needs an outlet to shout at the sky. Restless might be the most necessary hour in your week. \nRestless brings together the loose ends of a rage that we feel but don’t quite know what to do with and weaves it into a collective chord of F*** YOU\, DO SOMETHING. \nKind of like a guided meditation\, except if it had been made by The Sex Pistols and shouted through loudhailers. \nThe music pulls no punches; it’s raw and visceral and urgent\, but crafted too – both in the lyrics (simultaneously catchy and rich) and the skill of the performers including the co-composers Quinta (Collectress\, Bat For Lashes) and the inimitable Thomas Johnson. \nAll the staples of classic 70s punk are here – thumping drums\, driving riffs\, sweary vocals smashed through fuzzing amps – along with some folkier finesse from fiddles and intricate solos. \nBut the real power comes from where the music takes the room. The set list leads the audience through a building narrative from abuse\, to anger and\, ultimately\, action – all informed by the direct experiences of frontwoman and lyricist Viv Gordon. \n‘I didn’t know how much I needed that. It was as angry as I am but then joyous and beautiful all at the same time. I’m crying. It’s gonna take me a while to come down’ – audience member \n–things to know– \n\nRestless is created\, convened and performed by Viv Gordon\, a campaigner & survivor-activist grounded in her lived experience of Child Sexual Abuse\nThis is a safer space for anyone aged 18 + with considerate lighting\, relaxed environment and wellbeing support available\nThis is a Work in Progress Sharing. It is a supportive event about testing new work.\nIt’s f***ing brilliant\n\n\nEVENT DETAILS \nThursday 11th July\nMorley College\, Westminster Bridge Road\, London SE1 7HT\nTimings: Doors 7pm. SUMMARY:Jude Kelly: Shakespeare’s Women
DESCRIPTION:Following on from recently directing the sold out world premiere play reading of ‘Shakespeare’s Women’ at The Globe\, Jude Kelly takes us on a journey of exploration of some of the great female characters in The Bard’s works. \nWho were the real-life inspirations behind these characters\, what do they teach us about gender politics in 16th Century society\, and how contemporary are the themes and challenges that these women faced? From Juliet to Desdemona\, Portia to Ophelia\, Lady M to Kate Shrew \, Jude will demonstrate the huge emotional power and complexity these of these famous female roles. \nThis fascinating evening is more than just a presentation\, it’s a conversation – indeed a provocation – by the founder of WOW Global to discuss how we can best shape the future of gender-equality by learning from the past.

SUMMARY:Silent Scores: Celebrating Female Composers
DESCRIPTION:The Bosmans ensemble will provide a feast of unjustly neglected string quartets by female composers of the 19th and 20th century. Forgotten enchanting compositions played by leading London musicians with animated introduction by Marina Solarek will path the way into the music and lives of Ethel Smyth – an active member of the suffragettes\, Fanny Mendelssohn – more than just the sister of Felix Mendelssohn\, Henriette Bosmans – composer of jewish heritage who lived through the nazi invasion in Amsterdam\, Rebecca Clarke – one of the first female member of the Queens hall Orchestra\, the romantic german composer Emily Mayer and Germaine Tailleferre – the only female member of  the famous group of french composers named “les six”. \nIs another generation growing up not finding out about the musical magic these women? There are so many female composers who have written not only huge amounts of chamber music but also mountains of symphonic works. It was immensely difficult for women to get their works published during their lifetimes. The Bosmans Ensemble has dedicated itself to uncover the unjustly forgotten music by so many outstanding female composers from 18th – 20th Centuries. \nBosmans Ensemble: \nViolins: Marina Solarek/Clare Hoffmann \nViola: Catarina Silva\, \nCello: Miriam Lowbury

SUMMARY:Ethical Matters: Bitch – Sex\, Evolution & the Female Animal
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be female? Mother\, carer\, the weaker sex? Think again. \n\n\n\nIn the last few decades\, a revolution has been brewing in zoology and evolutionary biology. Lucy Cooke introduces us to a riotous cast of animals\, and the scientists studying them\, that are redefining the female of the species. \n\n\n\nMeet the female lemurs of Madagascar\, our ancient primate cousins that dominate the males of their species physically and politically. \n\n\n\nOr female albatross couples hooking up together to raise their chicks in Hawaii. \n\n\n\nOr the meerkat mothers of the Kalahari Desert—the most murderous mammals on the planet. \n\n\n\nThe bitches in Lucy’s book Bitch overturn outdated binary expectations of bodies\, brains\, biology and behaviour. Bitch will change how you think—about sex\, sexual identity\, and sexuality in animals and also the very forces that shape evolution. \n\n\n\nLucy Cooke has a Master’s in Zoology from the University of Oxford\, where she was tutored by Richard Dawkins. She is the author of two previous books\, A Little Book of Sloth\, which was a New York Times bestseller\, and The Unexpected Truth about Animals\, which was shortlisted for the Royal Society Insight Investment Science Book Prize and has been translated into seventeen languages. She has also written for The Sunday Times\, Telegraph\, Mail on Sunday\, New York Times and Wall Street Journal. \n\n\n\nLucy is also an award-winning broadcaster and documentary filmmaker. Initially working behind the scenes in television comedy\, she is now a regular on Radio 4 and has presented prime-time series for BBC\, ITV and National Geographic. \n\n\n\nHer book Bitch: A Revolutionary Guide to Sex\, Evolution and the Female Animal will be available on the day.

While elsewhere\, hippies are celebrating free love and The Beatles and Janis Joplin are rising to fame\, Swiss women still don’t even have the vote. \n\n\n\nBette – the host of a regional TV cooking show – and Trudy – a housewife with a mild alcohol problem – are about to change that – and question their life choices\, their politics\, their sexualities\, and what it means to be a “good woman” in the process. \n\n\n\nYou’ll laugh\, you’ll cry\, and you’ll meet two extraordinary women. \n\n\n\nPRAISE FOR “THE GOOD WOMEN”: \n\n\n\n“The poignant two-hander depicts burgeoning love against a backdrop of political struggle. Simply staged\, the romcom plot balances witty humour\, social injustice & emancipation.” – Fringe Biscuit \n\n\n\n“This thoughtful glimpse into the difficulties faced by women in the 1960s is gently uplifting” – The British Theatre Guide.

SUMMARY:Instructions on How to Cry
DESCRIPTION:“A woman who can’t cry. I assure you\, there is nothing to fear.” \n\n\n\nInstructions on How to Cry is a new devised comedy play exploring the science and mystery of emotional tears which appear to be solely present in Homo Sapiens. Mixing clowning\, physical comedy and atmospheric live music\, the show invites audiences to have fun and celebrate theatre. At the heart of the performance lies a simple question: why do humans cry? \n\n\n\nA show filled with fun clowning and music. Devised and loosely inspired by Argentine Julio Cortázar’s surrealist work as well as scientific research on crying. \n\n\n\n“So funny and silly and beautiful and utterly un-British. Full of genius. Three splendid performers”. David Greig.

SUMMARY:HEXENHAMMER at VAULT Festival
DESCRIPTION:HEXENHAMMER was shortlisted for the Untapped Award 2022 and is directed by Complicité Associate Catherine Alexander. It’s a darkly comedic and totally devised piece about violent misogyny and the online ‘Manosphere’\, from the early witch hunts to Reddit chatrooms. \n\n\n\nHEXENHAMMER is loosely based on The Hammer of Witches\, the 15th-century guide towitch hunting. Written by two Dominican monks\, it kick-started the European witch craze andwas partly responsible for the murder of tens of thousands of women over the next fewhundred years. \n\n\n\nIncorporating text taken directly from Die Hexenhammer and verbatim text found onlineincel forums\, HEXENHAMMER explores how men end up killing women as a way to solvetheir own problems\, and why that hasn’t changed in the past 500 years. \n\n\n\n“Sometimes a piece of theatre really nails it. Hexenhammer is a wittywild ride on the misogyny train\, from the 15th c monks who sparkedthe witch hunts to today’s incel culture (via Jordan Peterson’slobster). Can’t wait to see what’s next.”– Gabriel Gatehouse\, creator and host of the BBC podcast “TheComing Storm” \n\n\n\nSecretariat is a writing and performance duo consisting of Suzy Kohane (The Secret Life OfHumans\, NDT) and Sidsel Rostrup (Close To Me\, Channel 4).We use comedy to open up political issues and get to the people beneath them. We arefocused on how technology impacts intimate relationships\, how outsiders become insiders\,and use clowning as a way of interrogating interpersonal dynamics. \n\n\n\nShows: Friday\, February 10th @ 10:40pm and Saturday\, February 11th @ 4:10pm and 10:10pm\n\n\n\n\nVenue: The Studio\, The Vaults\, Leake Street\, London\, SE1 7NN\nhttps://vaultfestival.com/performances/hexenhammer/\nTwitter: @Secretariat_Lndn

SUMMARY:Post Sex Spagbol @ VAULT
DESCRIPTION:What happens when you mix Krissy\, an irresponsible ball of anxiety\, with a classroom full of gullible teen girls? \n\n\n\nAfter being handed a job as a counsellor and sex-ed teacher\, Krissy purposely leads a classroom full of goggle-eyed girls down a motorway of mistakes. Fuelled by her own flaws at a religious all-girls boarding school\, she shaves away any expectation of a perfect role model. With a desire for destruction\, Krissy intentionally feeds bad advice to the hormone-riddled girls\, from questionable kinks to the swimming pool’s secret sex shack\, while being forced to face the femininity that the world around her has trained her to hate. \n\n\n\nTold by a three-women ensemble\, this comedic story of sex\, love and spag bol explores self-love\, womanhood and growing up … as well as vibrators\, funerals\, the twelve disciples\, piss play and THAT mint shower gel. \n\n\n\n“Funnier than Fleabag! I predict this show will be a major hit on TV one day. See it now\, in a small room\, while you have the chance.” – Christopher Brett Bailey.
