SUMMARY:WHAT IF? A London Design Festival installation exploring place and possibilities
DESCRIPTION:This September Kingston Society will be encouraging residents to shape where they live and work as they explore the week-long What If? installation in central Kingston. Organised as part of both the London Design Festival’s annual series of city-wide events and Kingston 2025 celebrations\, What If? invites those most affected by change to join the creative conversation and feel empowered to influence their community.\nOver a thought-provoking programme that includes talks and walks\, visitors will be able to journey through Kingston’s past\, reflect on present development challenges\, and discover their potential to influence the borough’s future.\nInspired by the concept of an Urban Room\, the week-long installation (13-20 September) will be organised into five creative zones that explore place and possibilities – all in collaboration with local designers\, artists\, architects\, students and innovators.\nThe programme also includes a series of free walks and talks that explore the link between good design and local pride. From the role of public art to royals and rogues in Kingston’s colourful past\, these themed events encourage people to connect with their surroundings whilst reflecting on Kingston’s past\, present challenges and residents’ potential to influence the borough’s future.

SUMMARY:Design and Transformations: An Outdoor Photographic Exhibition by Vojtech Veskrna
DESCRIPTION:This outdoor exhibition by photographer Vojtěch Veškrna complements Design and Transformation. Stories of Czech Design 1990–2020\, on view at the Czech Centre’s Bouda Gallery. Installed in the public space outside the Czech Embassy\, the series offers a visually rich\, behind-the-scenes look into twelve Czech companies where design plays a central role in shaping both products and identity. \n\nVeškrna’s photographs move beyond polished final outcomes to focus on the environments\, materials\, and people that define contemporary Czech design. His lens captures the quiet rhythms of daily production\, the tactile beauty of traditional techniques\, and the innovation driving forward-thinking industries—from porcelain workshops and textile printers to medical technology and game development studios. This body of work reveals design as a living process—deeply rooted in craft\, constantly evolving\, and inseparable from the cultural and industrial landscape it inhabits. \nCoorganised by the Czech Centre London and the Academy of Arts\, Architecture and Design in Prague UMPRUM. Supported by the Moravian Gallery Brno. \nFoto Vojtěch Veškrna\, Mmcité \nOutdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy\n26 – 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY\nFree access 24/7

SUMMARY:Making the West End a fashion destination
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about how Jewish designers innovated\, defied expectations and transformed the West End. \n\n\n\nJoin us and learn more about the stories of Jewish designers\, makers and retailers who made London’s West End a fashion destination. SUMMARY:Innovations for a Sustainable Future - Private Viewing
DESCRIPTION:PRIVATE VIEWING: Thursday 13 July\, 6:30-8:30pm \n\n\n\nFree entry\, registration necessary (more info on website\, see below) \n\n\n\nA brand new interactive exhibition touching on the fast-evolving digital revolution as well as the pressing challenges faced by our generation. With both Europe and the world undergoing a major technological transformation\, new phenomena such as artificial intelligence are slowly making their way into all aspects of our lives\, from communication to health\, from culture to sustainability. What are the innovations and scientific discoveries shaping our future? \n\n\n\nThe Innovations for a Sustainable Future exhibition seeks to create a dialogue between science\, society\, culture\, and art. Its main aim is to address current global issues and the inevitable role science and new technologies will play in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for a better\, more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs were adopted by all UN member states agreeing to work on\, among other things\, a plan to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger\, achieve gender equality and avert climate threats by 2030.This interactive augmented reality exhibition was artistically rendered by the renowned Czech graphic designer Pavel Fuksa\, drawing from the concept of the successful Czech Innovation Expo which travelled the world presenting Czech scientific discoveries and innovations. The new London exhibition highlights innovations and issues on a European level\, reflecting the higher purpose of science with special emphasis on the means needed to implement the ambitious SGDs. \n\n\n\nHow the Exhibition Works \n\n\n\nVisitors will see seemingly static outdoor panels with abstract symbols on the walls. After downloading the exhibition app (available free for Android and iOS)\, they will see the space around them come to life on their devices\, allowing them to explore in a fun and unique way a variety of scientific stories and fascinating information about technological innovations contributing to our sustainable future. \n\n\n\nRegistration necessary: \n\n\nRegister on Eventbrite\n\n\nExhibition Website: \n\n\n\n\nExhibition dates: 14 July – 30 September\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition was created by the Czech Centres in collaboration with the Czech Technology Agency. Organised by the Czech Centre London in association with the Czech Embassy.

SUMMARY:Innovations for a Sustainable Future (AR Interactive Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:PRIVATE VIEW: Thursday 6 October 2022\, 6 – 8 pm \nExhibition: 06 Oct 2022 – 02 Dec 2022\, Mon-Fri 10 am – 6pm \nFree entry\, registration necessary (more info on website\, see below) \nA brand new interactive exhibition touching on the fast-evolving digital revolution as well as the pressing challenges faced by our generation. \nBoth Europe and the world are undergoing a major technological transformation. New phenomena such as artificial intelligence are slowly making their way into all aspects of our lives\, from communication to health\, from culture to sustainability. What are the innovations and scientific discoveries shaping our future? \nThe Innovations for a Sustainable Future exhibition seeks to create a dialogue between science\, society\, culture and art. Its main aim is to address current global issues and the inevitable role science and new technologies will play in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for a better\, more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs were adopted by all UN member states agreeing to work on\, among other things\, a plan to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger\, achieve gender equality and avert climate threats by 2030. \nThis interactive augmented reality exhibition was artistically rendered by the renowned Czech graphic designer Pavel Fuksa\, drawing from the concept of the successful Czech Innovation Expo which travelled the world presenting Czech scientific discoveries and innovations. The new London exhibition highlights innovations and issues on a European level\, reflecting the higher purpose of science with special emphasis on the means needed to implement the ambitious SGDs. \nHow the Exhibition Works \nVisitors will enter a seemingly empty room with only abstract symbols on the walls. After downloading the exhibition app (available free for Android and iOS)\, they will see the space around them come to life on their devices\, allowing them to explore in a fun and unique way a variety of scientific stories and fascinating information about technological innovations likely to shape our future. \nThe exhibition was created as a joint project of the Czech Centres and the Czech Technology Agency. It is part of the 2022 Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU Programme. \nThe London exhibition is organised  by the Czech Centre London and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the United Kingdom.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:ART OF CHINESE LIVING
DESCRIPTION:“ART OF CHINESE LIVING” EXHIBITION OPENS IN COVENT GARDEN\, LONDON \nGlobal lifestyle collaboration to boost Chinese trade with UK \nNext month will see the UK debut of a global collaboration to showcase the best of Chinese creativity and design\, in the form of a pop-up shop introducing the UK to 32 leading Eastern brands that fuse Chinese aesthetic with contemporary design. \nThe exhibition\, in Covent Garden from 16th – 26th November\, aims to force a reappraisal of the stereotypical ‘Made in China’ perception\, replacing Chinese production with Chinese creativity.
