SUMMARY:SAMA’ PRESENTS: JASON KAAKOUSH (AND MORE!)
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the capital after her summer debut\, renowned DJ and techno instigator SAMA’ has teamed up with Marsm to curate a late-night takeover at Electowerkz. For this event\, SAMA’ will be featuring and playing with her top picks from the Middle Eastern and international electronic music scenes. \nSAMA’ \nSama’ (aka. Skywalker) is the DJ and electronic music producer from Palestine playing techno\, house\, and other deeper sub-genres with a unique twist of her own. Her Boiler Room debut in 2018 has racked up over 1.5MIL views as she continues to solidify her imprint on the European and Middle Eastern electronic music scene. \nJASON KAAKOUSH \nIn Sama’s own words\, “There’s only one man in my life who never disappoints me\, and I believe he’s done better than most big names: Jason Kaakoush” (Mixmag Turkey). His unique global sound and unparalleled selection has led to him being Sama’s favourite DJ. Jason is currently cementing his name in the global scene by releasing chart topping music including his latest release on Moan Recordings. \nANAHITA SHAMSAEI \nBudding DJ Anahita Shamsaei\, grew out of Tehran’s underground electronic scene and fine tuned her sound across the UK\, Turkey and Germany. In a special guest appearance\, the unstoppable self-taught techno aficionado will be joining her transcontinental peers for a bass-heavy selection. \nRISE 1969 \nBorn in the UK and raised in Beirut\, William Mahfoud (a.k.a. Rise 1969) is considered a staple in the Lebanese rave scene\, drawing influences from the punk\, techno\, drum and bass\, ambient and experimental communities. After winning this year’s Beirut Berlin Express competition organised by The Grand Factory\, he’ll be spending the summer at the BlackHead Studios in Berlin under the mentorship of Moodmusic Records boss Sasse.

SUMMARY:Speed Caravan / Ghoula / Gnawa London (Stances Festival- مواقف)
DESCRIPTION:Now in it’s 2nd edition\, Stances- مواقف: North African Multimedia & Performance Festival explores and celebrates the daring visions of contemporary artists from North Africa and the diaspora. With more than a dozen events over a 3 week period\, this triple-bill is an all star line up showcasing some of North Africa’s most moving acts and the closing performance of STANCES مواقف festival. \nRaï | Gnawa | African | Electronics | Chaabi | Rock | Trance \nThis is a ticketed event. Tickets available through Rich Mix. \nSPEED CARAVAN\nFuelled by the creative fire Mehdi Haddab\, Speed Caravan is the Paris-based quartet charged towards a psychedelic horizon. Taking traditional Algerian influences and the unique appeal of Raï genre\, the band rips through unstoppable electronic beats\, grooves and raw rock energy. Haddab\, a virtuoso oud player\, has turned it’s classical role on its head\, instead turning the oud into unapologetic rock and roll instrument. With their first album\, Kalashnik Love\, Mehdi and his Speed Caravan have created a ‘contemporary music caravan’; as Songlines writes: “Haddab has fused history and technical brilliance with rage and energy\, and created something quite phenomenal.” \nGHOULA (A/V set)\nIn Tunisia\, music has been a generational vehicle for popular symbols\, images and myths. Despite its small size\, Ghoula sees his native country as a north African crossroad where legacies came to settle. As a producer and multi-instrumentalist posing his sounds on a backdrop of captivating images\, Ghoula creates genre-defying sets through both acoustics and samples. Obsessed with North African multimedia heritage\, Ghoula has been digging up vinyls from flea markets and old Tunisian medinas\, bringing back vestiges of forgotten music and kiKitsch visuals\, all cooked on top of contemporary upbeat dance rhythms. \nGNAWA LONDON\nLed by Moroccan Gnawa artist and award-winning ambassador for Gnawa music Simo Lagnawi\, the band pays its own unique tribute to North Africa’s most prolific musical tradition and sacred trance music. His solo debut album ‘Gnawa London’ released on Waulk records was featured in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World Albums’ as he’s also been nominated in their ‘Best Newcomer’ and ‘Best Artist’ categories. Whether you’re a newcomer or veteran to the genre\, Gnawa London is a force to be reckoned with. \nThis event is 16+.\nRich Mix is wheelchair accessible. \nThis event has been made possible by the generous support of Al Araby TV and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:I Have Two Names
DESCRIPTION:Salim has lived a happy existence in London for over 10 years. Suddenly\, his friends start to take an interest in his homeland Palestine and his seemingly easy life in the UK is altered. He is faced with a bittersweet feeling; the pleasure that those close to him want to discover his country mixed with the frustration that they can journey there with the ease of holidaymakers\, travelling a route that is totally off limits to him. \nThrough Al Zaytouna Dance Theatre’s artful mix of dabke\, contemporary dance and theatre performed to a ground shaking mix of modern electronic and traditional beats\, the play questions the nature of solidarity movements and explores the complex experience of exile\, identity and homesickness. \nThe performance will be followed by Q&A with Director and cast. \nWritten and directed by Ahmed Najar. \nSupported by Amal – a Saïd Foundation programme and Arts Council England.

SUMMARY:Cairokee: ‘The Ugly Ducklings’ UK Album Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Marsm & El Wekala present: Cairokee \nAfter selling out two nights at the Jazz Cafe in 2018\, Cairo’s trailblazing rock pioneers return to London to premiere their anticipated 6th album\, ‘Ugly Ducklings’. \nArticulating the many elements of contemporary Egyptian society that drive their generation\, Cairokee’s anthemic calls for freedom and societal changes have become the soundtrack to a generation and an innate reflection of their unparalleled fan base. \nTheir latest and sixth album “Ugly Duckling” was launched in March 2019 and builds upon Cairokee’s “Parallel Universe” established in their song “No2ta Beida” (White Dot). It is a space through which they invite all the ‘outcasts’ to break free from patriarchal and societal shackles\, traditions and restrictions. All that cannot be discussed is put on display through the ugly – the ugly duckling. Musically\, the album builds on the band’s iconic indie\, pop and chaabi rock traditions while dancing its way through electronic influences and cutting vocals. \nSpecial support guest TBA.\n_____________________________________________________________\n14+ but all under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and may be asked to show\nphoto ID. \nFor wheelchair access please email admin@electricballroom.co.uk. SUMMARY:Shkoon / Rima Album Tour / London
DESCRIPTION:MARSM UK & The Jazz Cafe are proud to announce all-conquering electronic trio Shkoon’s biggest London show to date at The Jazz Cafe. \nLaunching their anticipated new album ‘Rima – ريما’\, the renowned Syrian/German electronic trio returns to London for a headline show. \nCombining Arabic scales and folklore with classical harmonic structures and electronica\, their new album further develops the band’s celebrated sound to include deep house\, downbeat\, dub and hip-hop. Powerful melodies and rhythms from Syria and the Middle East meet the pulse of North German electronica\, while piano\, violin\, synthesizers and percussion take the audiences into a trance-like state that is as captivating as it is danceable. \n‘Rima’\, the title song of the debut album is inspired by a story from Arabic folklore\, in which a mother tells peaceful tales to her child as the world sinks into chaos. \nEl Jehaz الجهاز join on support. Reshaping the boundaries between traditional Arabic music and electronica\, producer El Jehaz has become a key player in the digitalised rebirth of Mijwiz and electronic Dabke\, an unstoppable folkloric music phenomenon from Jordan and Palestine.

SUMMARY:ASTRID SONNE + NEXCYIA
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents…\nASTRID SONNE + NEXCYIA\nTuesday 16 November | 8:30pm (7:30pm doors)\nTickets: £11 https://link.dice.fm/VcvM72ssNib\nIKLECTIK\, Old Paradise Yard\, 20 Carlisle Lane\, London\, SE1 7LG \nASTRID SONNE is a Copenhagen-based composer and viola player\, using playing and listening as the foundation of her compositional practice. Her third album “outside of your lifetime” (September 2021) is a precisely created record that Sonne arrived at via improvisation\, trimming and reassembly. It is made with keys\, strings\, voice and buttons. Many of the instruments and inputs on the record are carefully processed to efface their personality\, so their origins are never exactly clear. One may follow seamless transitions between pure generated oscillating waves and true ten-finger choral organ work. Other tracks present fierce waveforms through a shimmery rotary pulse\, heated and perfectly suited for live experience of the music. Hands-on and hands-off effects bleed into each other\, and one often can’t tell the difference.\nThe compositions appear like sculptures. With “outside of your lifetime”\, Astrid Sonne presents physical music\, further developing an expression formed through previous releases. Melodies and deliveries that conjures a clear image of movement\, like a sound that has and is humanity. A computer can coat that sound\, beautifully\, but it cannot make it. And physical music sounds different. It doesn’t sound like music built from yesterday’s ghosts and memories in the machine; it doesn’t sound like a forecasting of the future as we worship the tomorrow that technology will bring us. It sounds like today\, in the space around us.\nhttps://astridsonne.bandcamp.com/ \nNEXCYIA is an African-American/French sound artist and experimental ambient musician based in London and Paris. Working with found sound\, Nexcyia weaves together harsh sound design and swooping soundscapes into works that bridge many moods\, emotions and places through noise\, granular synthesis\, textures and rhythms.\nhttps://linktr.ee/nexcyia

SUMMARY:MAX TUNDRA + BAS JAN + GUS BONITO (DJ Set)
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nMAX TUNDRABAS JANGUS BONITO (DJ Set)Friday 2 SeptemberThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/Ka0f9869d209 \n\n\n\nMAX TUNDRA\, aka Ben Jacobs\, is a master of delightfully inscrutable\, slyly tuneful electronic pop. His three albums recorded for Domino Records between 2000-2008 echo throughout much of contemporary pop music. The first of the trilogy\, Some Best Friend You Turned Out To Be\, is more or less the most experimental; the second\, Mastered By Guy At The Exchange\, perhaps the most joyful; and the third\, Parallax Error Beheads You\, the most riotous. All three albums remain essential\, and three are being reissued by Domino this summer! A remix mixtape entitled Remixtape featuring the likes of Julia Holter and Kero Kero Bonito will also arrive alongside the reissues on August 12th. The hyper pop pioneer has collaborated with the likes of Arca\, Daphne & Celeste and A. G. Cook. The natural musical predecessor to the likes of PC Music\, Max Tundra also boasts a remix roster which includes Pet Shop Boys\, The Strokes and Franz Ferdinand. Join us for a very special concert from Max Tundra to celebrate these reissues on September 2nd\, to the very day the exact 20th anniversary of landmark album release ‘Mastered By Guy At The Exchange’.https://www.maxtundra.com/ \n\n\n\nBAS JAN is a London-based ensemble; this year\, they returned with an expanded line-up and a much-anticipated second album ‘Baby U Know’ (Lost Map). It is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 2018 debut album Yes I Jan\, which was hailed for its “messy majesty” (Uncut) and “beautifully fractured art-pop” (Mojo). Bas Jan was co-founded in 2015 by songwriter\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Serafina Steer. The band features Emma Smith (Jarv Is\, Meilyr Jones\, Seamus Fogarty and founder member of the Elysian Quartet) on violin\, bass and electronics\, Rachel Horwood (Trash Kit\, Bamboo\, Jenny Moore’s Mystic Business) on drums and Charlie Stock on electric violin.https://basjan.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:THE UN/POSSESSED
DESCRIPTION:You are warmly invited to join the87press for the launch of five new books\, three collections of poetry\, one translated collection of poetry\, and a novel. \nFeaturing poets and writers: Fran Lock\, Gareth Farmer\, Danny Hayward\, Jessica Widner\, and Laura Doyle Péan (who will join us via a virtual reading)\, the event will be blended together with the warm Latinx sounds of Manuka Honey. \nThe five new titles launched on this evening of festivity will bring together topics such as struggles with mental health\, break-up love songs\, autism and woodwork\, Gypsy-Roma Traveller rights\, reflections on work during the Covid-19 Pandemic and post-pandemic recession\, alongside a novel in which a poet dies and haunts two protagonists\, a ballet dancer and a mortician. Expect sauciness\, sassiness\, and sincerity. Two of these titles are Poetry Book Society recommendations for Winter 2022. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the last four years\, the87press’ bold and daring challenge to the failure of diversity and inclusion initiatives has been well received by a growing international grassroots readership. the87press focuses attention across spectrums of underrepresentation\, featuring regular work from racialised\, LGBTQ+\, Neurodiverse\, and working-class writers across genres\, forms\, and contexts. This event marks the beginning of the fifth year of operations against an increasingly hostile climate for the arts and humanities; your support for the growing partnership between Café Oto and the87press is much appreciated! \nFor more about the87press\, please visit www.the87press.co.uk \nThis event is brought to you in partnership with The Sonic Agent.

SUMMARY:PHEW + MODEL HOME
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nPHEWMODEL HOMESunday 16 OctoberThe Lexington\, 96-98 Pentonville Rd\, Angel\, London\, N1 9JB7.30pm | £12 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/jd390b33780a \n\n\n\nPHEW was a founding member of the legendary Japanese punk band Aunt Sally. After the band’s breakup in 1979\, she continued her career as a solo artist\, releasing a collaborative single with Ryuichi Sakamoto in 1980 and her first solo album\, ‘Phew’\, with Conny Plank\, Holger Czukay of CAN\, and Jaki Liebezeit in 1981. In 1992\, her third album\, OurLikeness\, was released on MUTE\, again at Conny’s studio\, with Jaki Liebezeit of CAN\, Alexander Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten\, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. This is THE best way to meet confident\, gorgeous\, like-minded single femme lesbian and bisexual women just like you… and this is the perfect opportunity for you to grab a date for those Halloween parties coming soon. She has also released collaborative works with Ana da Silva (Raincoats)\, Seiichi Yamamoto (Boredoms) and others. Phew’s expansive album ‘Vertical Jamming’ is being released on vinyl for the first time via Disciples on 28 October\, a special run on clear vinyl housed in a Studio Tape-Echo sleeve. A small number of advance copies will be on sale at this London show.https://phewjapan.bandcamp.com/music \n\n\n\nMODEL HOME is a hyper prolific experimental hip-hop formation from Washington D.C.\, instigated by rapper NappyNappa and producer Pat Cain. The duo recruits an ever-changing cast of collaborators to give each record a new feel: Model Home can sound like a post-modern take on old-school hip-hop\, glitchy noise or even improvised exploration. The gist of Model Home is that the music pours out like a faucet\, faithfully channelling the chaos of everyday thought. Model Home’s music would blend right in with a dystopia. The deteriorating sounds of Patrick Cain’s electronics would be impossible to distinguish from the constant construction that is the score of any contemporary city; NappyNappa’s enigmatic missives would be lost in the roar of public service announcements\, personalized advertisements\, and omnipresent sirens. Built on the edifice of dub sound systems and DIY basement clatter\, their sound comprises slabs of textured noise and decayed vocals. Disciples just released the duo’s sensational new album ‘Saturn In The Basement’ and its companion cassette; go seek!https://modelhomedc.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:The Coveryard presents Caught Beneath the Landslide
DESCRIPTION:The Coveryard’s eight-piece ensemble of composer-performers is bringing their trademark genre-smashing antics to a brand-new live show\, ransacking the ruins of the end of history to reassemble a multi-layered musical portrait of the golden years of Britpop. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an intensely relaxed evening of live music as we deep dive into the ‘official’ Britpop era of 1993–97 — from Modern Life is Rubbish and Maybe\, to OK Computer and Spiceworld — and reanimate a musical movement that vowed to live forever. \n\n\n\nExpect megahits from Britpop’s so-called ‘Big Four’ and cult classics from their guitar-wielding fellow travellers. Expect a few provocative picks from some of the pioneering UK artists and styles that evaded the ‘Britpop’ label\, whether trip hop\, big beat or acid jazz. Most of all\, expect the unexpected as we pull apart\, reinvent and mash together some of the most iconic music of the ‘90s\, casting a sideways glance at the decade’s wry mix of hedonism and mundanity\, back when things could only get better. \n\n\n\nAbout the Coveryard \n\n\n\nThe Coveryard is a UK-based collective of composers and musicians working across musical styles and genres. Since 2012\, they have programmed and produced live music shows across London that explore the concept of the cover version: most recently\, in a series of gigs at St John’s Hoxton celebrating the music of the Smiths\, Fleetwood Mac and Paul Simon. Freely mixing traditions from folk and jazz\, rock and electronic\, chamber and early music\, the Coveryard is committed to rearrangement\, reinterpretation and reinvention. \n\n\n\nwww.thecoveryard.com

SUMMARY:MARY LATTIMORE + LAILA SAKINI
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nMARY LATTIMORE\nLAILA SAKINI\nMonday 31 October\n229\, 229 Great Portland St\, London\, W1W 5PN\, UK\n7pm | £12 (16+ show) | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/d570d6dcc32e \n\n\n\nMARY LATTIMORE is a harpist and composer living in Los Angeles. She experiments with her Lyon and Healy Concert Grand harp and effects. Her solo debut\, The Withdrawing Room\, was released in 2013 on Desire Path Recordings. Lattimore also writes harp parts for songs and recordings\, performing and recording with such great artists as Meg Baird\, Thurston Moore\, Sharon Van Etten\, Jarvis Cocker\, Kurt Vile\, Steve Gunn\, Ed Askew and Fursaxa. Her debut solo record for Ghostly International\, ‘At The Dam’\, was recorded during stops along a road trip across America and released in March 2016. The next year\, she compiled sounds from her past life in Philadelphia for a cassette tape titled ‘Collected Pieces’. Released in May 2018 to acclaim from the likes of NPR\, Pitchfork\, and The New Yorker Lattimore’s next album ‘Hundreds of Days’ presented an expression of mystified gratitude for the natural world. She capped off the banner year — which included international tours with Iceage and Kurt Vile\, a performance with Harold Budd at Big Ears Festival\, and an appearance on Billboard’s New Age charts — with two collaborative albums released on Three Lobed Recordings\, one with Meg Baird and the other with Mac McCaughan. \n\n\n\nLattimore’s most recent album ‘Silver Ladders’ (out 2020 on Ghostly)\, saw her arriving at her most confident work to date\, expanding her style of instrumental storytelling with the help of producer and guitarist Neil Halstead (Slowdive\, Mojave 3). Recorded in Halstead’s studio near an old English surftown\, the songs on ‘Silver Ladders’ reflect Lattimore’s vivid memories against the gloom and glimmer of the ocean. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://marylattimoreharpist.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nLAILA SAKINI works with piano\, voice\, guitar\, found sound\, electronics and silence to create dynamic and textured environments that provide the listener with space to develop their own meanings and responses. Her major works include Like A Gun (EP)\, Vivienne (LP)\, Strada (EP)\, Into The Traffic\, Under The Moonlight (LP)\, Princess Diana of Wales (LP) and her 2017 collaboration with poet Lucy Van\, Figures (EP). Laila has performed at Cafe Oto\, Galeria Zé dos Bois\, Berlin Atonal\, Listen! festival\, The White Hotel\, Meakusma x Arkaoda\, Kings Place\, Wunkderkammer Festival\, Ponto d’Orvalho among others. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://lailasakini.bandcamp.com/
