SUMMARY:13 Native Spirit Festival 12-20 Oct - 24 SNOW / 24 СНЕГА
DESCRIPTION:Director Mikhail Barynin\, 2016\, Yakut language with English subtitles\, Russian Federation\, 1h 30min \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rB4-DnDpoq \nThe unbearable climate of the Arctic region of Yakutia. Permafrost. For most of the year\, the temperature is below zero and the ground is always cold. \nIn winter\, the temperature drops to minus 65 degrees. There is no telecommunication or electricity\, and the lack of roads hinders transport. Life in this condition means a daily battle with the elements and with yourself. Hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest settlement\, a person can rely only on himself. This severe land attracts people who are looking for freedom and independence. \n24 SNOW tells the story of Sergey\, a horse-breeder who lives most of the year in the tundra looking after the herd. With each year\, Sergey spends more and more time away from the village\, meeting his family just a few times a year for the horse-breeders’ feast and to bring the meat home. Feeling like a stranger in his own home\, Sergey is losing his connection with his family and missing the chance to see how his children to grow up. \nThe exhausting nature of life for the Northern man presents him with the hardest of dilemmas – who he really is.

SUMMARY:Athanor – The Alchemical Furnace
DESCRIPTION:On Czech Centre London’s Vimeo (UK only):\n10am on 27 November – 10am 30 November 2020\n£4.99; pre-order available now:\nhttps://vimeo.com/ondemand/thealchemicalfurnace \nA playful\, poetic and candid insight into Jan Švankmajer’s artistic workshop in which a grand master of puppetry and animation conjures his sharp and merciless exploration of human nature \nDir. Adam Olha\, Jan Daňhel\, Czech Republic / Slovakia 2020\, 117´\nCast: Jan Švankmajer\, Jaromír Kallista \nThe world is divided into two unequal camps. Those who have never heard of Jan Svankmajer and know that they have come face to face with genius.\nAntony Lane\, New Yorker \nThe legendary artist\, filmmaker and surrealist\, Jan Švankmajer\, whose work has inspired artists such as Terry Gilliam and the Quay Brothers\, bid farewell to feature filmmaking in 2018 with his swan song\, Insects. While shooting the making of Insects\, directors Adam Olha\, Jan Daňhel and producer Jaromír Kallista decided to preserve Švankmajer’s unique creative process revealing the behind-the-scenes details of his artistic practice. Over three years they followed his life and work at home and abroad (including the UK premiere of Insects at the Tate Modern) creating a complex portrait\, a collage\, in which serious discussions about his artistic principles are interlaced with footage of him at work and at home including everyday and comic moments such as crashing his four-wheeler\, posing awkwardly with fans or getting irritated by organisers at an art exhibition. Kateřina Turečková\, 2018\, Czech Republic\, 52min\, En. subt.\nMore info: https://london.czechcentres.cz/en/program/docu-mondays-iluze \nIn her original concept of a film as a computer game\, the author presents her personal report from Budapest where she spent a year as a student. The viewers take part in a game\, going through several levels that put them into everyday situations related to the issues of the contemporary Hungarian society: they see the capital with the eyes of tourists\, but they are mostly forced to use the subjective perspective of the Hungarians to think about the freedom of art\, the right to education\, medical care\, and the questionable Hungarian political situation in general where the name of the Hungarian Prime Minister\, Viktor Orban\, is often heard again and again.

\nABOUT THE DIRECTOR\nKateřina Turečková originally studied the Theory and history of dramatic arts at Palacký University in Olomouc; later\, she went to study at the Documentary Film Department at the FAMU in Prague where she made her personal documentary miniatures such as Strip (2015)\, The Invertebrates (2015)\, Lenka (2016) and Tradition (2017)\n
Interview with director Kateřina Turečková will be available on the Czech Centre website and YouTube.
\nPart of DOCU-MONDAYS: Powerful Voices series celebrating a bold female perspective on controversial and compelling issues within contemporary society by leading Czech women directors.

SUMMARY:DOCU-MONDAYS: Mallory
DESCRIPTION:Monday 19 April 2021\nOnline screening via provided link: https://dafilms.com/film/9796-mallory\nThe film will be available for free after registration from 00:00 till 23:59 CET on Monday 19th of April 2021.\nDir. Helena Třeštíková\, 2015\, Czech Republic\, 102’\, English subtitles  \nMore info: https://london.czechcentres.cz/en/program/docu-mondays-mallory \nMallory made a promise to herself to quit drugs and live a better life for the sake of her new-born son. But a drug-free existence proves harder than she thought. For 13 years Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková followed this large\, strong\, caring woman as she battled through toxic relationships\, endless knock-backs from the Kafkaesque bureaucracy of social services and having her son committed to a psychiatric facility. Despite living in her car and being rejected from all angles\, Mallory keeps pushing to get off the street and help others around her. A mesmerizing portrait of a woman’s life on the fringes of society and a true testament to human resilience. \nABOUT THE DIRECTOR \nImpressive film career of the first lady of time-lapse documentaries\, Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková\, spans over 40 years and features more than 50 documentaries including the 2008 European Film Academy the Prix Arte winner\, René.  \nFollowing people’s stories over the course of several years\, even decades\, Trestikova builds up with openness and intimacy full character studies of her protagonists whether these are married couples (A Marriage Story)\, young delinquents (René) or women (Mallory). Finding the universal in her subjects and their life dramas\, an unsensational excitement in their everyday adventures\, Trestikova bears witness to the human condition as lives evolve before our eyes recalling of Richard Linklater´s film Boyhood.    \nInterview with director Helena Třeštíková will be available on the Czech Centre website and YouTube. \nPart of DOCU-MONDAYS: Powerful Voices series celebrating a bold female perspective on controversial and compelling issues within contemporary society by leading Czech women directors.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:Powerlands Screening + Driector Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Powerlands is an award-winning documentary about global Indigenous resistance to mining. Director Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso and producer Jordan Flaherty are touring the UK with London Mining Network\, screening the film and talking to audiences. \nIn the film\, Ivey Camille Manybeads Tso\, a young Navajo filmmaker\, investigates the displacement of Indigenous people and the devastation of the environment caused by the same chemical companies that have exploited the land where she was born. She travels to the La Guajira region in rural Colombia\, the Tampakan region of the Philippines\, the Tehuantepec Isthmus of Mexico\, and the protests at Standing Rock. In each case\, she meets Indigenous women leading the struggle against the same corporations that are causing displacement and environmental catastrophe in her own home. Inspired by these women\, Ivey Camille brings home the lessons from these struggles to the Navajo Nation.

SUMMARY:Good Old Czechs + Q&A with director Tomáš Bojar
DESCRIPTION:A unique\, poetic documentary combining never-before-seen archive footage with the memories of fighter pilot Frantisek Fajtl and gunner Filip Jansky\, both serving in the RAF during the war. Taken from their published work Fajtl’s and Jansky‘s precise observations and poignant reflections are voiced by two actors retelling their experiences from escaping their occupied homeland\, travelling across Europe to Britain and to the East serving in the Soviet Union\, Poland and Slovakia; the euphoria of their return at the end of the war\, and their betrayal and persecution once the communists took power in 1948. Their unassuming inner discourse is juxtaposed with rich period footage and specially composed music by Stroon. A heartfelt project by director and screenwriter Tomas Bojar\, the winner of the Proxima competition at the 2022 Karlovy Vary International festival\, whose grandfather served in the RAF as a meteorologist.

SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: Putin's Witnesses
DESCRIPTION:With Putin becoming one of the world’s most powerful leaders\, and the man responsible for the Ukrainian war\, Vitaly Mansky’s fly-on-the-wall documentary provides a vital witness account of Putin’s rise to power throwing considerable light on his personality and ideas. \n\n\n\nUkrainian-born Vitaly Mansky gained unprecedented access to Putin and his inner circle in the Kremlin in 1999 – 2000 when filming a documentary that would boost Putin’s electoral success for Russian TV. Following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and war in the Donbas region\, Mansky revisited that footage to trace Putin’s motivations and thirst for power. In his rare\, up-close portrait of Putin\, featuring\, amongst others\, a heartwarming meeting with his teacher\, we get early glimpses of Putin’s casual ruthlessness\, emphasis on Soviet-style nationalism\, reluctance to account for political decisions\, and behind-the-scenes revelations. Mansky’s act of bearing witness allows us a better understanding of the machinations that enabled Putin to consolidate power in this pivotal period while questioning his role in Putin´s bid for power. A genuinely chilling time capsule with a strong relevance today. \n\n\n\nVitaly Mansky\, Latvia\, Switzerland\, Czech Republic 2018\, 102 mins\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nAdmission: £5 \n\n\n\nBOOK NOW

SUMMARY:The Trial: Prague 1952 + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In Prague in 2018\, workers find in an abandoned warehouse film reels that had been hidden there since the fall of the Berlin Wall. These are the images of the Slánský Trial\, which in 1952 was a summit of Stalinist terror and anti-Semitism: a macabre production in which 14 top leaders of the Communist regime\, most of them Jews\, were accused of imaginary crimes and forced\, through torture and threats\, to make a public confession of their guilt\, which was also imaginary. 11 of them were sentenced to death and hanged. \n\n\n\nWith the help of these recently restored exceptional archives and a dive into the archives of the secret police\, Ruth Zylberman went to meet these broken families in order to retrace the complex trajectory of three of these men\, Rudolf Slánský\, Artur London and Rudolf Margolius. Three communists\, three men destroyed by a world they had helped to build and where the lie that became the law managed to subvert\, beyond the political field\, the most elementary bonds of human society right down to its most intimate entrenchments. \n\n\n\nRuth Zylberman is a filmmaker and author. Amongst her latest films are Le dernier été (France Télévisions\, Zadig Productions\, 2019\, 60’)\, Les Enfants du 209 rue Saint-Maur\, Paris Xe (2017\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 110’)\, Maurice Nadeau. Le chemin de la vie (2011\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 52’)\, Dissidents\, les Artisans de la Liberté (2009\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 100’). She is also the author of La direction de l’Absent\, (Christian Bourgois\, 2015) and the narrative 209 rue Saint-Maur\, Paris Xe\, Autobiography d’un immeuble (Le Seuil/Arte Editions\, 2020). \n\n\n\nIvan Margolius\, son of Rudolf Margolius who was sentenced to death during the political trials in 1952\, is an author whose work includes memoirs and a number of books and articles on art\, architecture\, engineering\, design and automobile history. He was born in Prague\, Czechoslovakia and studied architecture both there and in London following his arrival in the UK in 1966. He has worked for Foster and Partners\, Skidmore\, Owings and Merrill and Yorke Rosenberg Mardall.

SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: Brotherhood

They grew up in the shadow of their father\, Ibrahim\, a strict\, radical Islamist preacher. When Ibrahim gets sentenced to two years in prison for war participation and terrorism\, the three brothers are suddenly left on their own. SUMMARY:My Father\, the Prince + Q&A with Lila Schwarzenberg
DESCRIPTION:An intimate portrait of the relationship between Karel Schwarzenberg\, Chancellor to Václav Havel\, a key figure of post-November 1989 Czech politics and the head of one of the oldest and richest noble families\, and his daughter Lila Schwarzenberg. \n\n\n\nThe filmmaker\, who admits being afraid of her reticent and overpowering father when younger\, uses a camera to facilitate a difficult and long overdue father-daughter conversation daringly probing into their shared past and complicated relationship. Her story of a girl\, who resists convention and aristocratic protocols while growing up in a family tradition dominated by men and hereditary princes\, is woven into the story of her famous\, charismatic father whose childhood was marked by dispossession and expulsion\, and who despite all odds became a statesman\, head of Schwarzenberg family and revolutionary. Filmed over the course of five years in family residencies in Prague and Vienna\, and Orlik and Murau castles\, the originally envisaged documentary about Karel Schwarzenberg becomes a highly intimate portrait of two people who are both familiar and yet strangers trying to find a way to each other against the backdrop of a turbulent family history marked by turns of fate. \n\n\n\nLukas Sturm\, Lila Schwarzenberg\, Austria/Czech Republic\, 2022\, 79’\, in German with English subtitle

SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: The Great Nothing
DESCRIPTION:evA feature-length documentary tragicomedy delving into the Czech response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The result is an absurdly humorous portrayal of society\, tinged with serious undertones\, yet unexpectedly lighthearted\, leaving viewers questioning the surreal reality of it all. \nVít Klusák\, Marika Pecháčková\, Czech Republic 2023\, 103´\nThe Czech Lion nomination for the Best Czech Documentary \n“It’s not about Covid\, it’s about us\,”  – Viewer \nIn the spring of 2020\, Vít Klusák (known for “Caught in the Net” and “Czech Dream”) and Marika Pecháčková embarked on a journey through the deserted streets of Prague\, documenting the nation’s two-year struggle with the global crisis and government mandates. Through poignant human narratives\, poetic reflections on the times\, surreal imagery\, and pivotal societal moments\, the filmmakers ventured into hospitals alongside doctors\, captured the fervour of anti-vaxx protesters\, witnessed athletes adapting to home training\, and followed a mezzo-soprano forced to find employment in a supermarket. With striking black-and-white cinematography\, the film refrains from imposing judgment\, allowing the raw footage to speak for itself.\nScreened as part of the Czech Centre’s Czech Documentary Now series. \nAbout the directors and the producer\nVít Klusák is a well known Czech director who with Filip Remunda shot the prize-winning film Czech Dream about a fictional supermarket in 2003. Since than he has directed many movies including Caught in the Net (2020)\, White World according to Daliborek (2017) and One Second Forever (2021) \nMarika Pecháčková studied photography and journalism before she finally realised that documentary film was the place from which she wanted to watch and understand the world. Her fundamental structures of thinking come from psychology and her personal experience with psychotherapy. Filmography: Rest Now \nPavla Klimešová is a producer based in the Czech Republic who studied film production at FAMU. She produced Caught in the Net\, an award-winning documentary by the directing duo Vít Klusák & Barbora Chalupová about child abuse online and Barbora’s next film The Law of Love about same sex marriages in Czechia. She is now developing Marika Pecháčková’s debut Runaway.

SUMMARY:Threads That Tie Us: An Oshwal Odyssey – UK Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Threads That Tie Us: An Oshwal Odyssey is a documentary that traces the 2\,500 year long journey of the Halari Oshwals\, a small community from India who have since dispersed around the world. In this film\, driven by a deep connection to her roots\, Bindu Shah navigates the scattered diaspora throughout Canada\, India\, Kenya\, and the United Kingdom. Each emigrant of the community becomes a storyteller\, creating microcosms of Halari Oshwal life. Ideas of faith\, spirituality\, and business-centric lifestyles intersect in this global story. Yet\, against the backdrop of globalization\, the film delicately raises questions that resonate with universal themes of dying languages and cultural heritage. This documentary asks whether this community can persevere amid geographical distances and age-old rules. As an exploration of identity\, communal history\, and sacred pacts\, this documentary seeks to find out at what lengths this community can go to sustain their unity.
