SUMMARY:Rescue Mission: Transforming Architectural Heritage for the Modern Age
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion on the rescue of neglected places through adaptive reuse and transformation\, organised as part of this year’s London Festival of Architecture. \nIt’s time to take demolition off the table\, for the good of the climate and our communities. In this session\, we’ll explore how 20th-century architecture is being rescued from neglect through the power of adaptive reuse and placemaking. \nOur expert panel will discuss how contemporary approaches to reuse and meanwhile use\, can embrace a building’s character\, transform spaces for the modern age\, save structures and revitalise communities. We’ll delve into the innovative design work of CHYBIK + KRISTOF\, a leading Czech studio\, as well as those breathing new life into forgotten buildings across the UK and Europe. \nJoin us for a lively conversation about the future of architectural heritage and be inspired to reimagine a more sustainable and characterful built environment. With Catherine Croft\, Director of the Twentieth Century Society\, Ondřej Chybik\, co-founder of CHYBIK+KRISTOF\, and Petra Marko\, placemaking expert and the Chief Executive at the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava. Chaired by Will Hurst\, Managing Editor of The Architects‘ Journal. \nFREE event but online registrations is required via https://bit.ly/LFA2024_RescueMission \n  \nThe event is organised by the Czech Centre in partnership with CHYBIK + KRISTOF ARCHITECTS Ltd and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic. SUMMARY:Women in Focus: Míla Fürstová
DESCRIPTION:Czech Centre’s Women in Focus series continues before the summer with a talk by the internationally acclaimed Czech-British artist Míla Fürstová. \nDuring her talk\, Míla will share her journey from communist Czechoslovakia to the United Kingdom\, and her professional transition to art. She will discuss the challenges she encountered during her studies and early stages of her professional artistic career\, her collaboration with Coldplay’s Chris Martin and the influence motherhood has had on her artistic work. Last but not least\, Míla will talk about her most recent exhibition projects in Czechia and her work in public spaces in London. \n  \nARTIST’S STATEMENT: \n‚My work is an intimate portrayal of the human soul explored through the medium of etching\, expressed in a distinctly female voice. \nThe content is inspired by universal and personal mythologies. The work is poetic and often narrative in its nature and reads as both contemporary and timeless. I cut\, fold and overlay my works\, often printing on glass or other transparent surfaces thus creating imagery that is multidimensional in terms of both form and meaning. \nThe feminine voice of my work is tactile and urgent\, fragile yet strong\, gentle yet enquiring. At times it floats weightlessly above the labyrinth of being a woman at other times it delves into the darkest corners of the female psyche. \nThe technique of etching uniquely reflects and informs the spirit of my work. I draw with a needle onto a plate\, allowing the image to quietly grow\, whilst a fragile silver line emerges from a dark background as if a distant memory was traced from the unconscious. The initial image undergoes metamorphosis as the alchemical process of etching progresses through each of its stages.‘\n–  Míla Fürstová \n  \nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee) \n  \nABOUT MÍLA FÜRSTOVÁ \nOver the past decade Míla Fürstová has exhibited in over 20 solo shows in many countries including Britain\, the USA\, France and the Czech Republic. During this time she has won numerous awards and her work has featured in many international publications. Prestigious private and public collections including the Royal Collection\, the V&A and The Museum of London have acquired her work. \nBorn in Czechoslovakia\, Fürstová gained an MA degree in Art\, English Language and Psychology at the Charles University in Prague whilst simultaneously studying for her BA degree in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Gloucestershire. In 2001\, Fürstová received her Masters degree at the Royal College of Art and has subsequently lectured at Coventry University and The University of Gloucestershire \nIn 2014 Fürstová’s work reached over 400 million people when she was commissioned to make the artwork for Coldplay’s Ghost Stories album and four singles. In 2015 the sale of her Coldplay artwork raised over £100\,000 in aid of children’s charities. \nThe largest retrospective of Míla Fürstová’s work to date is currently on show at The Museum of Easter Bohemia in Hradec Králové\, a city Míla grew up in. The Secret of Subtleties or Homecomings (Taj jemnosti aneb Návraty domů) remains open till 27 October 2024. \nMíla’s large-scale installation ‚Motherhood‘ can be found in London’s Marylebone Road\, commemorating the old Queen Charlotte’s Lying-In Hospital\, one of the first hospitals to provide medical care to unmarried women. Míla won Westminster City Council’s competition for the commission of the work. \nMíla Fürstová currently lives and works in Cheltenham. \nThe event is part of the Women in Focus series introducing inspiring female personalities and their accomplished professional journeys. Organised by Czech Centre London.

SUMMARY:The Art of Living & Dying Well – Art and the Afterlife
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, art and music have allowed cultures to explore the question of what happens after death. Join us for an evening discovering how art has enabled us to grapple with one of life’s most fundamental questions: what lies beyond. \nThe format will be a discussion led by a panel of distinguished guests\, followed by an audience led Q&A.  Shelagh Fogarty\, the popular TV and radio presenter and journalist will host the proceedings. Through discussion\, different understandings and representations of ‘the afterlife’ in art will be explored\, as will differing cultural perspectives. \n  \nOur Host \nShelagh Fogarty is the award-winning radio presenter of the weekday afternoon show on LBC radio.  Her career spans the worlds of presenting\, journalism and writing.  She has a knack for making hard-hitting news stories accessible to the widest possible audience\, having worked for various BBC Radio and TV regions and for many ITV shows.  She is a regular contributor to the Daily Telegraph\, Total Politics and The Tablet.  Shelagh is an accomplished and engaging corporate event host with years of live broadcasting experience\, which make her the perfect host for this event. \nOur Panellists \nFr Patrick van der Vorst was a former Director of Sotheby’s Europe and worked for over 25 years in the art world.  As an auctioneer he sold the collections of the Duke & Duchess of Windsor and Elton John. He secured investment from the BBC’s Dragon’s Den and set up his own online art valuation company which he subsequently sold. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2023. On his hugely successful website\, www.Christian.Art he combines his knowledge of the arts with the Gospel\, offering a daily Gospel Reading paired with a related work of art and a short reflection. \n  \nBaroness Hollins was created a crossbench life peer in the House of Lords in 2010\, and is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry of Learning Disability at St George’s University of London. She one of the UK’s foremost authorities on learning disability and mental health and is founder of the charity Books Beyond Words\, which produces word free books for people with learning disabilities.  She is former president of the Royal College of Occupational Therapists; former president of the British Medical Association; former president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and a former member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. \n  \nLynne Hanley is an art historian who combines expert knowledge with a love of making art accessible\, compelling and enjoyable.  She runs a successful business which specialises in Gallery tours and talks.  She combines a deep knowledge of art history\, with engaging and often surprising narrative. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Talk: The Invention of British Art - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:You have to try really hard\, it seems\, to like British art. Even its admirers concede it has contributed little to world art history. Tate\, the closest thing we have to a gallery of British art\, assigns less than a quarter of its display space to works made before 1900. Outside Britain\, only one gallery in the whole world is dedicated to British art\, in Yale. Few people visit it. \nWhy is British art so overlooked? Is it because Britain itself has never been enthusiastic about art\, and indeed remains ill at ease with it today? Is it\, quite simply\, bad? Or has British art suffered an injustice\, its impact on the world unfairly disregarded? \nNone of these questions can be answered without a frank reassessment of the history of British art\, those who made it\, and those it was made for. Now\, leading art historian Bendor Grosvenor is taking on that challenge. Looking at key moments\, objects and individuals from every era\, he explores how they were shaped by their environment\, and why – above all – it took so long for the art from theses isles to actually become ‘British’. \nFrom folk art to the role of female artists\, from the influences of invaders to the territories of the British Empire\, the story of British art is just as much a story of Britain’s place in the world\, and its impact upon it\, as the art and artists themselves. \nBendor Grosvenor is an art historian specialising in Old Masters and British art. Best known from the BBC series ‘Britain’s Lost Masterpieces’ and ‘Fake or Fortune?’\, he has discovered a number of important paintings by prominent artists including Van Dyck\, Rubens\, Titian\, Gainsborough\, Beale and Lawrence.

SUMMARY:Guest House: Sewing a Palm Tree Workshop with Elle Reynolds
DESCRIPTION:All are invited into the Guest House\, a shared\, temporary workspace formed through collective contribution and the relaxed palava of conversation. You don’t need to sew a palm tree if you don’t want to! \nParticipants are invited to sit together\, sew by hand\, talk\, listen\, share stories\, or simply observe. Some may choose to sew palm trees\, while others may work on repairs\, small tests\, or nothing at all. Conversation\, silence\, and informal knowledge-sharing are all part of the process\, as the work develops slowly and collectively over the session. \nThe workshop is led by artist Elle Reynolds\, whose practice works through collaborative processes\, storytelling\, and material experimentation. Her work explores making as a way of thinking together\, with a particular interest in shared authorship\, provisional forms\, and the social life of materials. \nParticipants will experience sewing as a social and conversational practice\, build confidence working with their hands in a low-pressure environment\, and contribute to a shared\, provisional body of work. The session offers space to reflect on ideas of elsewhere\, slowness\, care\, and collective making\, rather than producing a defined outcome. \nThe Guest House takes place within IMT Gallery’s group exhibition\, The House\, featuring works that all\, often through degrees of autobiography\, speak to some of the discordances of being at home: perhaps the anticipation of order amidst the everyday; or an expectation of comfort\, often amidst insecurity or tension. The exhibition includes Elle Reynolds’ film Morass and sculptural sound piece Black Sun Loungers: The Caribbean Gaze. \nAbout Elle Reynolds: \nArtist/scholarresearcherquiet disrupter\, Elle Reynolds has a background in organising practice. She continually challenges traditional institutional structures\, reimagining the use of time and space. Her art-making under the pseudonym Guest-Host-Guest includes object installation\, collaborative events\, performative storytelling\, and interventions that unsettle the notion of the archive through spatial exploration\, participation\, and the disruption of academic language. She holds a PhD investigating alternative art school spaces and serves as a Non-Executive Director and Board member of TOMA (The Other MA)\, an alternative art school in Southend-on-Sea\, Essex. Recent projects include workshops for New Contemporaries and Creative Break Time. She is currently Programme Leader of the Graduate Diploma in Art at Goldsmiths. \nAll materials including fabric\, threads\, embroidery rings and needles will be provided\, and herbal tea served. No experience is necessary\, just bring your curiosity\, a willingness to get hands-on\, and an open mind. \nTo keep this workshop intimate\, spaces are limited; reserve your spot now for an evening of creativity\, conversation\, and connection.

SUMMARY:Erev Yom HaShoah: ‘People Without History Are Dust’: An In Conversation with Dr Anna Hájková and Rabbi Kamila Kopřivová
DESCRIPTION:Where are the stories of great queer love in the Shoah? There are almost none. Dr Anna Hájková examines why the history of same-sex desire during the Shoah – queerness among Jews persecuted by the Nazis for their race – is largely absent from history books\, and how restoring these narratives can contribute to a more inclusive understanding of the Holocaust. \nBased on extensive archival research and oral histories\, her book\, recently awarded the 75th National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category\, offers concise\, accessible insight into the queer history of the Holocaust for both general readers and specialists. On Monday\, 13th April\, Anna will discuss her research in conversation with Rabbi Kamila Kopřivová on the occasion of Yom HaShoah\, the annual day of Holocaust remembrance in the Jewish calendar. \n\n6.30 pm – Erev Yom HaShoah Service\n7 pm – In Conversation\, followed by Q&A and refreshments\nEarly Bird Tickets: £15 members / £20 non-members\nEarly bird ends Monday\, 6 April\nBOOK NOW\n\nDr Anna Hájková is a Reader of modern European continental history at the University of Warwick. She is the author of\, among others\, The Last Ghetto: An Everyday History of Theresienstadt (2020) and People Without History Are Dust: Queer Desire in the Holocaust (2025)\, which won the 75th National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category in February. Hájková is the pioneer of queer Holocaust history.
