SUMMARY:Delicate
DESCRIPTION:Four different bodies collide. A show about how things need to fall apart before they can fall into place.Their lives are different\, but one thing unites them: they’re frustrated with their bodies changing\, ageing\, breaking\, and no longer obeying. They climb\, hang\, balance\, slide\, collapse\, hold and hug. They examine marks life has left on their bodies. Film and audio fragments mirror these marks in the wounds inflicted on our planet. These characters are fighting the grind of what’s expected. And you might feel inspired to do the same. \nAll performances of Delicate are chilled\, BSL interpreted\, audio described and captioned. \nDelicate is presented by Extraordinary Bodies. Co-produced with Figurteatret i Nordland (Nordland Visual Theatre) and Theatre Royal Plymouth.

SUMMARY:This Is The Land
DESCRIPTION:What exists in the ‘thin places’ where the distance between the living and the non-living is blurred? \n\n\n\nA symphony of stories resound from the land… \n\n\n\nTranscending narrative\, stories seep from the earth’s sediments\, affirming the unsettling feeling of a presence existing where logically it should not. Five shapeshifting figures navigate their arrival. Evoking a compelling cycle of the Seasons. Spring/Beginning: rebirth and resilience. Summer/Freedom: memory and desire. Autumn/Resistance: trespass and dispossession. Winter/Survival: journeying and hope. This Is The Land could not be more relevant to the issues of our times – ecological crisis\, social inequality\, and political repression of dissenting voices – whilst raising these in a highly original way. \n\n\n\nThis Is The Land’s stripped-back abstract-expressionist style is highly visual\, visceral\, and physical. The performance resists narrative through its ‘mash-up’ style of fragmentary images\, compelling movement and dance\, atmospheric soundtrack and live-vocal looping.

SUMMARY:Losing It
DESCRIPTION:An electric solo dance performance exploring the trauma of war through movement and sound. \nCan you still hear the bombs? I can hear them. \nGrowing up in a war zone means living and breathing politics. The Palestinian choreographer and performer Samaa Wakim asks herself how these experiences impact her identity and how generational trauma manifests in her body. In a journey towards the moment she began to fear for her freedom\, Losing It dives into memories of growing up under occupation\, exploring the various lived realities\, and the fantasies created out of fear and hope in order to survive. As fear overtakes Samaa\, her world begins to disintegrate: the floor becomes unstable\, and the sounds begin to warp\, creating a world where reality and fantasy blur. \nCreated in conversation with a live score by Samar Haddad King\, the soundscape features field recordings taken throughout Palestine since 2010. Accompanied by Wakim’s vocals\, the sounds of fear and safety come together to the point where past and present cloud the future. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGenerously supported by A. M. Qattan\, British Council Palestine.

SUMMARY:Harp & Tap
DESCRIPTION:The Celtic harp and tap dance join forces in this sparkling performance\, drawing inspiration from the world of concerts\, theatre and musical experimentation. \n\n\n\n“Harp & Tap” consists of a series of musical tableaus that express a colourful combination of sounds and rhythms: from a grotesque mask of the Italian “commedia dell’arte” to the pulsating beat of ragtime from the 1930s. Swing and groove dialogue with the multiple sounds of the harp outline the characters of the two protagonists on stage. \n\n\n\nGet ready for a unique crescendo of artistic fusion where strings and steps intertwine. \n\n\n\nIn 2018 Adriano and Ilaria met at a tap dance class\, he as a student and she as a teacher. Fascinated by innovation in their professional fields\, the two artists try to blend the sounds of the Celtic harp with the rhythmic phrasing of tap dance\, and the result is beyond the lines. \n\n\n\nAfter several performances in Italian theatres\, Harp & Tap comes to the Camden Fringe 2023.

SUMMARY:Lewys Holt: Phrases
DESCRIPTION:Phrases is a one-man dance\, multimedia and spoken word performance. It is a minimal\, reflective piece that continually shape-shifts between PowerPoint presentation\, dance performance\, stand-up set\, private conversation\, and storytelling recital. \n\n\n\nPhrases exists in a kind of ethereal space. Projections of stream-of-consciousness writing are paired with often improvised movement and discussions of communication to create a subtly humorous yet unnerving piece. Generally\, the piece expresses some solidarity with the anxious\, the confused and those who overthink. It doesn’t even really tell anyone that it’s going to be okay – it just sort of says\, “I know…” and strokes your head\, at the same time as having its own little freakout. \n\n\n\n“Phrases is fun\, eccentric and clever.”(Voice Magazine ★★★★) \n\n\n\nUnpretentious\, honest and thought-provoking\, Holt offers a wonderful study in overthinking.”(Broadway Baby ★★★★)

SUMMARY:Lay Down Your Burdens by Rhiannon Faith Company
DESCRIPTION:Choreographer and theatremaker Rhiannon Faith would like to invite you to step into an evening at the local pub\, but a night at the local like no other. Here you can explore the beauty of humanity and the eternal need for community and compassion\, take the weight off and help each other lighten the load and restore our weary souls. \n\n\n\nCo-commissioned by the Barbican\, London and Harlow Playhouse\, Lay Down Your Burdens is a radically tender dance theatre show that invites you into the pub to explore the beauty of humanity… \n\n\n\nTitled Lay Down Your Burdens\, the 120-minute (inc interval) show is set in a rundown but friendly and welcoming British pub\, hosted by charismatic landlady Sara who welcomes the same regulars each night\, listening to their stories and woes and serving them the same drinks. Until\, one day\, a stranger with an excess of baggage gets blown in from the cold… \n\n\n\nThe show is set on a thrust stage with the audience on three sides as guests in the pub. We meet the regulars and hear their stories as they come in and take their usual seats. In this friendly setting\, the guests (audience) are encouraged to join the conversations that go around the bar. With radical tenderness\, humour and intoxicating behaviour we can ultimately restore our weary souls\, rediscover what has been lost and lay down our collective weariness\, however tuneful that may be. \n\n\n\nInspired by the Bob Dylan song Lay Down Your Weary Tune\, music is a key element of the work. The pub setting features an original score by John Victor (of London band Ghengahr) played by live string section\, and the voices of the audience are recorded\, through unstructured and structured tasks and supported testimonials. The result is a collective weary tune\, edited live\, bespoke to each performance and place and played as the final moment of the show. \n\n\n\nWith extraordinary physical performance\, live music\, dubious karaoke and riotous pub games\, this visceral dance theatre world draws together those who have been estranged or never even dreamed they were connected. \n\n\n\nThe world premiere performances of this exciting and vital new work will be at The Pit\, Barbican 21 to 25 November 2023. \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith explained ‘With Lay Down Your Burdens we’re seeking to create a vital sense of community for audiences and participants and to build a platform for compassion and connection. Ultimately inviting all members of the community to a place where they belong\, where they feel seen\, and where they can experience joy and togetherness\, forging happier and healthier communities by providing a catalyst for positive social change.’ \n\n\n\nIn The Guardian\, Lyndsey Winship described Rhiannon as ‘one of the few UK artists making dance theatre that is pointedly socially conscious’ . \n\n\n\nLay Down Your Burdens was grown out of conversations with communities and developed from real-life experiences of the company\, who works with psychologist Joy Griffiths to develop responses to burdens that are caring\, creative and therapeutic. The show shines a light on individual suffering and discusses personal grief and serious illness. Suitable for over 16s\, it contains strong language and scenes that some may find upsetting. \n\n\n\nIt is performed and devised by a cast of six intergenerational performers (Shelley Eva Haden\, Donald Hutera\, Dominic Coffey\, Sam Ford\, Sara Turner\, Finetta Sidgwick) and two musicians\, (India Merrett\, Anna Clock). \n\n\n\nThe company have recently become the first UK company to be invited to perform at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival in China. They will take their previous show DROWNTOWN to the annual event\, considered one of the premier festivals in China and Asia\, for three performances 23 – 25 October. \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith Company makes radically tender dance theatre\, working nationally on big stages and locally with communities on the margins\, always with social change and care at its heart. Based in Harlow\, Essex\, with nationwide impact\, they are making bold\, ambitious moves to secure a future as global leaders in original dance theatre with a social purpose\, to champion community transformation and authentic belonging for all. The company returns to the Barbican following its poignant and critically acclaimed live and digital productions Smack That (a conversation) (2018) and Drowntown Lockdown (2020). \n\n\n\nRhiannon Faith Company has been nominated for five National Dance Awards; ‘Best Independent Company’ 2021\, 2022\, 2023\, ‘Best Digital Choreography’ 2021 (DROWNTOWN LOCKDOWN)\, ‘Best Dance Film’ 2022 (DROWNTOWN live film). In addition\, Rhiannon Faith was nominated for an AWA Women In Dance Leadership Award 2022. The company is an Associate Artist at Harlow Playhouse and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. https://www.rhiannonfaith.com/
