SUMMARY:Occupation + Q&A with director Michal Nohejl
DESCRIPTION:The movie is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London. The popular multi-genre festival is back again for its 26th edition. Representing one of the oldest national celebrations of European culture in the UK\, the festival presents an exciting programme covering film\, music\, science\, visual art and literature in various venues across London and beyond. Take your pick and immerse yourself in Czech culture this fall. \nVoted the Best Czech Film 2021 by critics\, this black comedy thriller fuelled by vodka\, cigarettes\, and cowardice hilariously investigates Czech-Soviet relations. After a premiere\, the theatre group is celebrating in a bar when an uninvited guest crashes the party. A drunken Russian officer has come to sell a can of petrol\, but soon the business transaction turns into a vodka-drinking race. The Russian\, interested in beautiful Milada and entertained by the comedic cowardice of the men\, simply won‘t leave… Spinning out of control\, the game becomes a trap\, heroes become cowards\, and cowards become heroes. Influenced by Milos Forman’s The Firemen’s Ball with a touch of Tarantino and The Good Soldier Schweik\, this allegorical\, pitch-black comedy delivers a highly original contribution to the topic of the invasion and is extremely relevant in today´s climate.

SUMMARY:Somewhere Over the Chemtrails
DESCRIPTION:The screening is part of the Made in Prague festival organized by the Czech Centre. \nThe friendship of two volunteer firefighters who more often quench their thirst than put out fires\, is put to the test when\, during Easter celebrations\, a van crashes into the village fountain and the driver is nowhere to be found. Convinced of a terrorist attack\, lonely widower Brona grabs the opportunity to prove his worth and protect his community. Turning the fire brigade into a militia he is hell bent on capturing the terrorist refusing the voice of reason provided by his friend Standa and his pregnant wife. Full of irony but also empathy and understanding the director gently mocks the fear of the unknown and conspiracy theories\, such as the clandestine dispersal of chemical substances which can only be eliminated by vinegar\, while providing an affectionate and humorous look at human weaknesses. A brilliantly acted\, compelling comedy that pays homage to Forman’s The Firemen’s Ball.

SUMMARY:The Last Race
DESCRIPTION:A gripping drama telling the true story of Czech skiing pioneers Hanc and Vrbata\, German athlete Emmerich Rath and one fateful race that took place in the Krkonose mountains in 1913. Although Hanc promised his pregnant wife never to race again\, he can’t resist the opportunity to beat the Germans in the first-ever Czech-German cross-country race and joins the competition. When the sun is replaced by a blizzard\, the race turns into a battle for survival\, and true friendship is tested. Using historical records to reconstruct the race\, the film sets straight events that have been reinterpreted by the political ideologies of the past\, creating a captivating thriller set against a backdrop of beautiful mountain panoramas where national rivalries are set aside in a race to save a fellow human life. \nFollowed by Q&A with director TOMÁŠ HODAN \nThe movie is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London. SUMMARY:Ear – the book behind a Czech film legend
DESCRIPTION:A book launch & film screening of the Czech film classic Ear.\n \nTo mark the publishing of a first English translation of Jan Procházka’s masterpiece Ear\, David Vaughan and Peter Hames discuss both the book and the film\, followed by a screening of the 1970 classic\, considered one of the greatest of all Czech films. \nThe Ear – Ucho in Czech – was the culmination of ten years of fruitful cooperation between the director Karel Kachyňa and screenwriter Jan Procházka. It is set in the period of the Stalinist purges in 1950s Czechoslovakia. A senior government official Ludvík and his wife Anna come back from a drunken party at the ministry to find that their house has been bugged. A gripping psychological drama follows\, as they await a knock on the door. \nThe novella Ear is perhaps Jan Procházka’s greatest work. He was one of the most popular and prolific Czech writers of the 1960s\, closely identified with the reforms and growing artistic freedoms of the time. It combines the economy of Hemingway with the tension of Hitchcock\, set in a stifling totalitarian environment. \nFor the first time Ear has been published in English – by Karolinum Press in a translation by Mark Corner. \nDavid Vaughan\, who wrote the afterword to the new edition\, is a writer\, broadcaster\, journalist and university lecturer. \nPeter Hames is a film historian and Visiting Professor in Film Studies at Staffordshire University.

SUMMARY:Poetry meets visual arts: Book launch with Pavla Melková and Antony Gormley
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the bilingual publication of The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Czech poet and architect Pavla Melková and leading British sculptor Antony Gormley meet on stage to continue an artistic dialogue that started six years ago in Prague when they first met\, and the idea of a joint book was born. In The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible Pavla\, Melková’s poetry meets Antony Gormley’s drawings\, circling the same centre and unfolding from the same horizon in their search for the essence of life\, to emerge in a common language. \n\n\n\nAntony Gormley’s images and a staged reading of Pavla Melková’s poems by translator and poet Joshua Mensch will accompany the launch of this bilingual edition. \n\n\n\nFollowed by audience Q&A and a book signing. \n\n\n\nPAVLA MELKOVÁ is a practising architect\, visual artist\, poet and writer who regularly lectures on art and architecture. Her widely-recognized architecture is visible throughout the Czech Republic\, where she has won numerous awards\, including Architect of the Year (2014)\, the Prague Mayor’s Prize (2012)\, and the National Prize for Architecture (2012). She has published seven books on architecture\, including most recently\, The Humanistic Role of Architecture (2016) and The Architecture of Reciprocity (2020). She is a regular contributor to professional architecture journals\, anthologies\, and collaborative works. Her two volumes of poetry include The Edges of the Day (2017) and Inner Time (2019). In 2012\, she founded the Office for Public Space at the Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR)\, which she headed until 2017. She is a member and vice-chair of the Gremial Council of IPR and is a partner at the architecture firm MCA atelier\, which she co-founded. In 2015\, she founded the course Concept and Interpretation at the Faculty of Architecture\, where she teaches. \n\n\n\nANTONY GORMLEY is widely acclaimed for his sculptures\, installations and public artworks investigating the human body’s relationship to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands about nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours\, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. A major solo exhibition of his work was presented at the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, in September 2019. Permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead\, England)\, Another Place (Crosby Beach\, England)\, Inside Australia (Lake Ballard\, Western Australia)\, Exposure (Lelystad\, The Netherlands) and Chord (MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA\, USA). \n\n\n\nGormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994\, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999\, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007\, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and a knight in the New Year’s Honours list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects\, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges\, Cambridge. Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003. \n\n\n\nJOSHUA MENSCH is a poet and translator based in the Czech Republic. He is the author of Because. A Lyric Memoir (W. W. Norton\, 20218). He has served as an editor of B O D Y since 2012. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible is a discourse between the languages of poetry and the visual arts. The book captures a dialogue between leading British sculptor Anthony Gormley and Czech poet Pavla Melková. The lines made by the words in the poems and lines of the drawings are traces that bring closer the shape of the essence – the essence of the world\, our lives\, relationships\, and situations. The strokes of the words of the poetry and the strokes of the lines of the drawings circle the same centre and unfold from the same horizon. When the marks cross paths\, the shape becomes more and more evident. Absorbed in the strokes and with developing awareness\, one mutual language emerges. This establishes the meaning of their encounter. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Pavla Melková and Antony Gormley\, Prague: Kant\, 2022\, English and Czech\, Hardback; 136 pages\, 245 × 165 mm\, ISBN 978-80-7437-376-3 \n\n\n\nCover image: The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible (book cover); Pavla Melková; Antony Gormley (photo: Lars Gundersen)

SUMMARY:The Trial: Prague 1952 + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In Prague in 2018\, workers find in an abandoned warehouse film reels that had been hidden there since the fall of the Berlin Wall. These are the images of the Slánský Trial\, which in 1952 was a summit of Stalinist terror and anti-Semitism: a macabre production in which 14 top leaders of the Communist regime\, most of them Jews\, were accused of imaginary crimes and forced\, through torture and threats\, to make a public confession of their guilt\, which was also imaginary. 11 of them were sentenced to death and hanged. \n\n\n\nWith the help of these recently restored exceptional archives and a dive into the archives of the secret police\, Ruth Zylberman went to meet these broken families in order to retrace the complex trajectory of three of these men\, Rudolf Slánský\, Artur London and Rudolf Margolius. Three communists\, three men destroyed by a world they had helped to build and where the lie that became the law managed to subvert\, beyond the political field\, the most elementary bonds of human society right down to its most intimate entrenchments. \n\n\n\nRuth Zylberman is a filmmaker and author. Amongst her latest films are Le dernier été (France Télévisions\, Zadig Productions\, 2019\, 60’)\, Les Enfants du 209 rue Saint-Maur\, Paris Xe (2017\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 110’)\, Maurice Nadeau. Le chemin de la vie (2011\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 52’)\, Dissidents\, les Artisans de la Liberté (2009\, Arte-Zadig Productions\, 100’). She is also the author of La direction de l’Absent\, (Christian Bourgois\, 2015) and the narrative 209 rue Saint-Maur\, Paris Xe\, Autobiography d’un immeuble (Le Seuil/Arte Editions\, 2020). \n\n\n\nIvan Margolius\, son of Rudolf Margolius who was sentenced to death during the political trials in 1952\, is an author whose work includes memoirs and a number of books and articles on art\, architecture\, engineering\, design and automobile history. He was born in Prague\, Czechoslovakia and studied architecture both there and in London following his arrival in the UK in 1966. He has worked for Foster and Partners\, Skidmore\, Owings and Merrill and Yorke Rosenberg Mardall.

With both Europe and the world undergoing a major technological transformation\, new phenomena such as artificial intelligence are slowly making their way into all aspects of our lives\, from communication to health\, from culture to sustainability. What are the innovations and scientific discoveries shaping our future? \n\n\n\nThe Innovations for a Sustainable Future exhibition seeks to create a dialogue between science\, society\, culture\, and art. Its main aim is to address current global issues and the inevitable role science and new technologies will play in reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set up by the United Nations in 2015 as a blueprint for a better\, more sustainable future for all. The 17 SDGs were adopted by all UN member states agreeing to work on\, among other things\, a plan to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger\, achieve gender equality and avert climate threats by 2030.This interactive augmented reality exhibition was artistically rendered by the renowned Czech graphic designer Pavel Fuksa\, drawing from the concept of the successful Czech Innovation Expo which travelled the world presenting Czech scientific discoveries and innovations. The new London exhibition highlights innovations and issues on a European level\, reflecting the higher purpose of science with special emphasis on the means needed to implement the ambitious SGDs. \n\n\n\nHow the Exhibition Works \n\n\n\nVisitors will see seemingly static outdoor panels with abstract symbols on the walls. SUMMARY:Czech Documentary Now: The Great Nothing
DESCRIPTION:evA feature-length documentary tragicomedy delving into the Czech response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The result is an absurdly humorous portrayal of society\, tinged with serious undertones\, yet unexpectedly lighthearted\, leaving viewers questioning the surreal reality of it all. \nVít Klusák\, Marika Pecháčková\, Czech Republic 2023\, 103´\nThe Czech Lion nomination for the Best Czech Documentary \n“It’s not about Covid\, it’s about us\,”  – Viewer \nIn the spring of 2020\, Vít Klusák (known for “Caught in the Net” and “Czech Dream”) and Marika Pecháčková embarked on a journey through the deserted streets of Prague\, documenting the nation’s two-year struggle with the global crisis and government mandates. Through poignant human narratives\, poetic reflections on the times\, surreal imagery\, and pivotal societal moments\, the filmmakers ventured into hospitals alongside doctors\, captured the fervour of anti-vaxx protesters\, witnessed athletes adapting to home training\, and followed a mezzo-soprano forced to find employment in a supermarket. With striking black-and-white cinematography\, the film refrains from imposing judgment\, allowing the raw footage to speak for itself.\nScreened as part of the Czech Centre’s Czech Documentary Now series. \nAbout the directors and the producer\nVít Klusák is a well known Czech director who with Filip Remunda shot the prize-winning film Czech Dream about a fictional supermarket in 2003. Since than he has directed many movies including Caught in the Net (2020)\, White World according to Daliborek (2017) and One Second Forever (2021) \nMarika Pecháčková studied photography and journalism before she finally realised that documentary film was the place from which she wanted to watch and understand the world. Her fundamental structures of thinking come from psychology and her personal experience with psychotherapy. Filmography: Rest Now \nPavla Klimešová is a producer based in the Czech Republic who studied film production at FAMU. She produced Caught in the Net\, an award-winning documentary by the directing duo Vít Klusák & Barbora Chalupová about child abuse online and Barbora’s next film The Law of Love about same sex marriages in Czechia. She is now developing Marika Pecháčková’s debut Runaway.

SUMMARY:Jaromír 99: The Castle - Exhibition in London
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Franz Kafka’s The Castle through an open-air exhibition showcasing the expressive black & white prints of renowned Czech illustrator and musician Jaromír 99 created for David Zane Mairowitz’s comics adaptation. The exhibition\, curated by Lukáš Horký\, offers a non-linear exploration of Kafka’s enigmatic narrative. Each image is a visual portal into Kafka’s text\, inviting viewers to interpret and engage with its suggestive and elusive nature. The exhibition captures the essence of Kafka’s surreal universe from the solitary figure of K. with his pilgrim’s stick to the ethereal presence of the chateau looming in the clouds. \n\n  \nAbout Franz Kafka\nFranz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague\, and his name is a symbol of Prague’s German-language literature\, which artistically reflects the unique cultural and social atmosphere of centuries of coexistence among Czechs\, Germans\, and Jews in the Central European region. Kafka’s work resonates globally with its timelessness. His books mirror not only the uncertainty and variability of his time but\, above all\, his inner conflict\, giving his work a very specific character. \nKafka’s perception of societal changes at the turn of the twentieth century and his sensitivity as a person and writer make his creations timeless. We constantly return to his texts\, which warn us against falling into lethargy and urge us not to accept the absurdities of the era passively. However\, much more is to be found in his work\, which often depends on how the reader interprets and understands the text. \nFranz Kafka wrote several short stories and three novels—America\, The Trial\, and The Castle\, which remains unfinished. The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his death\, when he was just 41. \nAbout Jaromír 99\nJaromír 99\, whose real name is Jaromír Švejdík\, was born in 1963 in Czechoslovakia and moves between the worlds of comics and music. He is a composer\, singer\, guitarist\, the frontman of the Kafka Band\, and an artist. The series of prints created by Jaromír 99 in 2013 for a comic adaptation of the novel „The Castle“ are expressive black and white prints\, first exhibited in 2020 as part of the Franz Kafka Festival in Frýdlantsko. The exhibition in the castle brewery metaphorically illustrated the futile journey of the land surveyor K. to the castle\, which stands on a hill within sight of the installation location. \nOutdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy\n26 – 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY\nFree access 24/7

SUMMARY:Our Lovely Pig Slaughter + Q&A with Adam Martinec
DESCRIPTION:The 28th Made in Prague Festival presents the UK premiere of Adam Martinec’s ‘A Rowdily Tragicomic Ode to Family Feuds and Disappearing Traditions‘\, inspired by Miloš Forman’s films and Bohumil Hrabal’s poetics. The film received the Jury’s Special Mention at the 2024 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. \nThe women cry over onions in the kitchen\, united in exasperation with their men. The men\, led by recent widower Karel\, drink plum brandy outside\, preparing for a pig killing. This annual gathering is when the family reconnects to enjoy great food. However\, family tensions are high this year\, and things are not going as planned. Karel’s daughter Romana misses her mother\, her sister’s marriage is on the rocks\, and Grandpa doesn’t want to do more pig killings. At the same time\, the butcher hides the fact that the ammunition is damp and a nosy neighbour plans to report the illegal slaughter. Amidst the chaos\, six-year-old Dusik goes missing. Inspired by Miloš Forman’s film and Bohumil Hrabal’s poetics\, the director unveils the Czech temperament\, creating a poignant comedy full of slapstick moments\, searing humour and great empathy amidst gender and generational divides. With strong visuals\, an atmospheric soundtrack\, and a fantastic array of non-actors\, this remarkable debut blends tragic and comic undertones. \nAdam Martinec\, Czech Republic 2024\, 84´\, English subtitles\nCast: Karel Martinec\, Miloslav Čížek\, Pavlina Balner\, Aleš Bílík\, Karin Bilíková \nKarlovy Vary International Film Festival 2024\nA Special Award Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2024\nOur Lovely Pig Slaughter + Q&A with Adam Martinec / Czech Centre London (czechcentres.cz)

SUMMARY:Identity: A Czech Graphic Design Love Story
DESCRIPTION:From New York to Prague: Nicholas Lowry’s Journey Through Czech Identity \n\nRenowned NY-based auctioneer and passionate collector Nicholas Lowry embarks on a captivating journey across the Czech Republic\, uncovering the visual and cultural threads that define Czech national identity. Swapping the auction house for adventure\, Czech-American Lowry—instantly recognizable in his signature tartan suit—travels from the vibrant streets of Prague to the design-rich cities of Zlín\, Litomyšl\, Brno\, and Pilsen. Along the way\, he delves into the legacies of visionary figures like Tomáš Baťa\, Josef Váchal\, Alfons Mucha\, and Ladislav Sutnar\, while also indulging in one of the country’s greatest exports—Pilsner beer. \nHis exploration takes unexpected turns\, from South Moravia’s vineyards\, where he examines the artistry of wine labels\, to the scenic hiking trails marked by the Czech Tourist Club’s innovative wayfinding system. Lowry also connects with today’s leading graphic designers\, including Petr Babák\, Martin Pecina\, and Aleš Najbrt\, bridging past and present in Czech visual culture. \nBut this journey is more than just an exploration—it’s personal. As he traces the evolution of Czech design\, Lowry uncovers a piece of his own history: his great-uncle founded the Primeros factory in Prague\, a story intertwined with the nation’s graphic identity. Through humor\, curiosity\, and a collector’s keen eye\, he offers a fresh perspective on what shapes a country’s visual soul. \nKateřina Mikulcová\, Petr Smělík\, Czech Republic 2024\, 85 mins \nUK Premiere\n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBook here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/identity-a-czech-graphic-design-love-story-tickets-1248206973659?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Jiří Bartoška In Memoriam: Shadows of a Hot Summer
DESCRIPTION:To honour the late Jiří Bartoška (1947–2025)\, iconic Czech actor and longtime president of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival\, and to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War\, the Czech Centre presents a special screening of the digitally restored Shadows of a Hot Summer (Stíny horkého léta)\, a haunting post-war drama from legendary Czech filmmaker František Vláčil. \n\nSet in the Beskydy Mountains two years after the end of WWII\, the film follows shepherd Ondřej Baran (Juraj Kukura)\, who lives peacefully with his wife (Marta Vančurová) and two children on an isolated farmstead. Their quiet existence is shattered when a retreating band of Ukrainian nationalist paramilitaries—part of a guerrilla force fighting Soviet control—invades their home\, seeking refuge and medical help for a wounded comrade on their flight to the West. As the family is taken hostage—along with the local doctor—Ondřej is thrust into a moral and physical battle\, forced to protect his loved ones in the face of escalating violence and psychological torment. \n\n\n\n\n\nFeaturing a chillingly memorable performance by Jiří Bartoška in one of his darkest roles\, Shadows of a Hot Summer is a masterclass in suspense and visual storytelling. Vláčil applies the classical unities of time\, place\, and action to build mounting tension through muted performances\, stark camerawork\, and an unforgettable score by Zdeněk Liška—his final collaboration with Vláčil. \n\n\n\n\n\nWinner of the Crystal Globe at the 1978 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival andrecently restored for its 2024 KVIFF premiere\, this powerful ballad of moral resistance and quiet heroism remains as urgent and resonant today as ever. A psychological thriller wrapped in poetic austerity\, it stands as a lasting testament to the artistic legacy of both Jiří Bartoška and František Vláčil. \nFrantišek Vláčil\, Czechoslovakia 1977\, 100’\, English subtitles\nCast: Juraj Kukura\, Marta Vančurová\, Jiří Bartoška\, Gustáv Valach\, Robert Lischke \n\nAdmission: £7 (+ Eventbrite fee)

SUMMARY:Klára Hosnedlová: Echo
DESCRIPTION:11 Feb 2026 – 29 Mar 2026 \nWhite Cube Bermondsey will open a solo exhibition of work by Klára Hosnedlová\, marking the artist’s debut with the gallery. Klára Hosnedlová’s corporeal\, immersive installations address utopian visions and imagine our future\, post-nature selves. Conceived as part-stage\, part-laboratory\, ‘Echo’ combines her signature photo-realist embroideries with architectural elements\, large-scale sculpture and textile works and living mycelium fungus. Incorporating performance elements and accompanied by a soundscape\, the artist choreographs a fictional narrative around themes of flux and transformation. \n\nKlára Hosnedlová (b. 1990\, Uherské Hradiště) is a Czech artist based in Berlin whose practice examines historical perception through utopian design and architecture. Responding to specific sites\, she researches experimental projects and past futurisms\, exploring how nostalgia shapes contemporary culture. Drawing on science fiction\, technology and ecological systems\, Hosnedlová creates immersive installations with a tactile\, “futuristic archaeological” atmosphere. Part of the first post-Communist Czech generation\, she is inspired by modernist and Brutalist architecture in Central and Eastern Europe and its intersections with politics\, history and mythology. Her work combines sculpture\, performance\, photography and embroidered panels and has been exhibited internationally\, including at Kunsthalle Basel\, Kestner Gesellschaft and the Lyon Biennale. \nFor more information about the exhibition please visit White Cube Bermondsey website \nOrgansied by White Cube Berdmonsey.

DESCRIPTION:BATAstories is a sweeping documentary driven by the voices of ‘Batamen‘ worldwide\, stories from Baťa-built towns\, and reflections from Baťa’s descendants. It traces the extraordinary rise of Czech entrepreneur Tomáš Baťa – the visionary cobbler’s son who transformed a small-town workshop into a global industrial shoe empire. \nDirected by the master documentarist Peter Kerekes\, the film weaves together three strands: Baťa’s memoir (narrated by Bolek Polívka)\, a reflection on the birth of modern global capitalism\, and a mosaic of personal stories. \nSpanning Europe\, South America\, Africa\, and Asia\, BATAstories moves between past and present\, blending archival and contemporary footage. From the industrial city of Zlín to purpose-built communities across the world\, it reveals a bold social experiment where factories became towns and employees became stakeholders. \nAt once intimate and expansive\, BATAstories is a vivid exploration of ambition\, ideology\, and the human stories behind a global empire. \nDir. Peter Kerekes\, France\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia\, 2018\, 78 min\, English subtitles / With Bolek Polívka and Zuzana Stivínová
