SUMMARY:Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess screening + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:We’re partnering with The New Black Film Collective for a screening at the Museum of London Docklands that unearths the story of Jamaica’s only female National Hero.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe documentary Queen Nanny: Legendary Maroon Chieftainess – by award-winning Jamaican-born American filmmaker Roy T. Anderson and Dr Harecourt Fuller – explores one of the most revered heroines in the history of the ‘New World’: Nanny of the Maroons. Her victory is celebrated in the present with her image appearing on the Jamaican $500 note and a posthumous award of Order of National Hero. Her resistance is an inspirational example of the many ways in which women have undermined slavery throughout history. Join us and learn more about this African warrior queen whose military prowess led her people to victory over the British army.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with special guest speakers. Advertised end times may be subject to change.\n\n\n\n\n\nBlack History Month 2023 #SalutingOurSisters

SUMMARY:RAW: Uncensored Storytelling\, Art & Music
DESCRIPTION:Described as “one of the best nights out in London”\, RAW is not your typical night out – and is a status quo-shifting event format that is the first of its kind. Conceived by a woman with a penchant for collecting stories and speaking to strangers\, RAW is produced by a female-led group of badass\, good-hearts and tribe of tribes called What Does Not. \n\n\n\nIt combines vibes for miles in the coolest venues\, the serendipitous connection with incredible humans from all backgrounds\, thought-provoking art and great music. All of this is bound together by everyday people’s highs\, lows and diversity of true stories – through the lens of a theme. To top it off\, the RAW has a noble vision underpinning its sass: to move the dial on the status quo of division and disconnection. \n\n\n\nThe theme for Feb 16th is CONFESSIONS. \n\n\n\nJoin us at Shoreditch Arts Club as we explore everything from secrets and things that happen behind closed doors and sealed lips. To insights and tales never told before in a public forum\, we’ll explore sauciness and shame\, the facade before the vulnerability\, and the reconciliation that comes with disclosure. Whether CONFESSIONS means lifting a burden or the power of acknowledgement\, we’ll explore the true stories that bring the theme to life.

Each image is a visual portal into Kafka’s text\, inviting viewers to interpret and engage with its suggestive and elusive nature. The exhibition captures the essence of Kafka’s surreal universe from the solitary figure of K. with his pilgrim’s stick to the ethereal presence of the chateau looming in the clouds. \n\n  \nAbout Franz Kafka\nFranz Kafka was born in 1883 in Prague\, and his name is a symbol of Prague’s German-language literature\, which artistically reflects the unique cultural and social atmosphere of centuries of coexistence among Czechs\, Germans\, and Jews in the Central European region. Kafka’s work resonates globally with its timelessness. His books mirror not only the uncertainty and variability of his time but\, above all\, his inner conflict\, giving his work a very specific character. \nKafka’s perception of societal changes at the turn of the twentieth century and his sensitivity as a person and writer make his creations timeless. We constantly return to his texts\, which warn us against falling into lethargy and urge us not to accept the absurdities of the era passively. However\, much more is to be found in his work\, which often depends on how the reader interprets and understands the text. \nFranz Kafka wrote several short stories and three novels—America\, The Trial\, and The Castle\, which remains unfinished. The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his death\, when he was just 41. \nAbout Jaromír 99\nJaromír 99\, whose real name is Jaromír Švejdík\, was born in 1963 in Czechoslovakia and moves between the worlds of comics and music. He is a composer\, singer\, guitarist\, the frontman of the Kafka Band\, and an artist. The series of prints created by Jaromír 99 in 2013 for a comic adaptation of the novel „The Castle“ are expressive black and white prints\, first exhibited in 2020 as part of the Franz Kafka Festival in Frýdlantsko. The exhibition in the castle brewery metaphorically illustrated the futile journey of the land surveyor K. to the castle\, which stands on a hill within sight of the installation location. \nOutdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy\n26 – 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY\nFree access 24/7

SUMMARY:Our Lovely Pig Slaughter + Q&A with Adam Martinec
DESCRIPTION:The 28th Made in Prague Festival presents the UK premiere of Adam Martinec’s ‘A Rowdily Tragicomic Ode to Family Feuds and Disappearing Traditions‘\, inspired by Miloš Forman’s films and Bohumil Hrabal’s poetics. The film received the Jury’s Special Mention at the 2024 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. \nThe women cry over onions in the kitchen\, united in exasperation with their men. The men\, led by recent widower Karel\, drink plum brandy outside\, preparing for a pig killing. This annual gathering is when the family reconnects to enjoy great food. However\, family tensions are high this year\, and things are not going as planned. Karel’s daughter Romana misses her mother\, her sister’s marriage is on the rocks\, and Grandpa doesn’t want to do more pig killings. At the same time\, the butcher hides the fact that the ammunition is damp and a nosy neighbour plans to report the illegal slaughter. Amidst the chaos\, six-year-old Dusik goes missing. Inspired by Miloš Forman’s film and Bohumil Hrabal’s poetics\, the director unveils the Czech temperament\, creating a poignant comedy full of slapstick moments\, searing humour and great empathy amidst gender and generational divides. With strong visuals\, an atmospheric soundtrack\, and a fantastic array of non-actors\, this remarkable debut blends tragic and comic undertones. \nAdam Martinec\, Czech Republic 2024\, 84´\, English subtitles\nCast: Karel Martinec\, Miloslav Čížek\, Pavlina Balner\, Aleš Bílík\, Karin Bilíková \nKarlovy Vary International Film Festival 2024\nA Special Award Karlovy Vary International Film Festival 2024\nOur Lovely Pig Slaughter + Q&A with Adam Martinec / Czech Centre London (czechcentres.cz)

SUMMARY:Waltzing Matilda + Q&A with Karel Roden\, Petr Slavík and Nataša Slavíková
DESCRIPTION:The orderly world of Karel\, a successful lawyer\, is irrevocably turned upside down when his extrovert\, bohemian mother\, Matilda—a former bar singer—loses her apartment and moves in with him. Driven by a sense of duty rather than love\, Karel offers Matilda a safe harbour and care\, with the help of his irresponsible\, happy-go-lucky son\, when it becomes clear that Matilda suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. Inspired by actual events and named after the famous Tom Waits song about dancing in the face of life’s obstacles\, this tragicomedy blends hilarious humour arising from the coexistence of three different generations and temperaments with touching moments as illness brings a fractured family closer together. Supported by a stellar cast\, including Karel Roden and Regina Rázlová\, this is not to be missed. \nPetr Slavík\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia\, 2023\, 113 mins\, English subtitles\nCast: Karel Roden\, Regina Rázlová\, Antoni Šoposki\, Zuzana Kánocz \nBest Actor\, Czech Film Critics’ Awards\nBest Music\, Czech Lion Award 2023\nAdmission: \nStudent Peak £15.00 \nAdult Peak £17.00 \nSenior Peak £15.00 \nWheelchair Bay Peak £10.00
